Well, the title says it all. Can we please, pretty please, with sugar on top ALSO have it as an OFFICIAL torrent download ? You know, when it comes out.
The full client too
I'd really hate to TRY to download 2+ GB and keep failing or getting a corrupted download. I know I had big issues a long time ago even with the <700 MB client installer (I only ever downloaded it succesfully ONCE, more than a year ago, never again), I shudder to think of the 2+ GB one. _

Besides, somebody WILL be uploading it as a torrent anyway. I'd just hate to download it from thepiratebay and later find out it's spyware/keylogger/trojan/whatever "loaded". That's why I'm saying "official" torrent _

Well, the decision to use a torrent as a distribution method AT ALL is an issue CCP will have to discuss, rediscuss and mull over repeatedly. I guess it would help if we "lobby" them into even considering it in the first place. They didn't even hint at the possibility that they might be thinking about it.
So nope, 1-2 months in advance isn't "too early", not with this issue _

Really, I'd pay some money to get myself a hard copy of EVE. Even if it's just for the heck of having one! (24/7 download rig running at home, 2 gig will be easy in one night.

To be fair, it was the "Trinity II" upgrade that's clocking 2+ GB, which might (or might not) be merged into the Rev 3.0 "patch", or be released separately. It probably WILL be released separately, since CCP claims they will maintain compatibility with the old Trinity I engine in Rev 3.0 too. Source ? Some video interview from a month ago.

I too remember this - think it was sometime around Exodus. It was only done for a couple of patches, and only then because the patch downloads were saturating their bandwidth and rendering TQ nearly unplayable for a few days after each patch. IIRC the torrent struggled nearly as much as CCP's server. It was back when CCP still hosted the patch files on their own server alongside TQ, rather than using the distributed hosting service they use now. As I understand it, they can scale that distributed hosting service to whatever they require, so if they know a 2Gb patch is coming, they will have already planned to have the distribution set up to get it out. ------- There is no magic Wand of Fixing, and it is not powered by forum whines. |

That's a big "if", and no, it would be "about the same" as a torrent, not faster... especially since you don't have much of an incremental patch size, but rather a massive addition.

Lol, then try to install it. If you have downloaded it from the less legal circuits, you need to extract the ISO first. After that, the installer extracts to a temp folder (2x18 gig), and after that you need to install it, taking yet another 18 gig (3x18gig). That's a whooping 54 gig for one game! (edit, lol calculation error)

One source of download = 100+k users trying to download the new Trinity 2 upgrade = Jita-like levels of lag.
We dont want a Jita blocking our entry into Trinity II now, do we?
download managers are the same thing, one source = slow for all as it gets hammered even more by download managers.

Hows about rewarding you loyal customers with a free disk mailed out in time for release? Then all we'll need is a small patch of the tweaks between now and then.
But seriously so long as I get the patch on release day I'm a happy bunny.

...Why are you talking about the filesize and torrents already? When does RIII get released and does this mean I cant play EVE anymore on my 1.7GHz Processor/256MB ATI GFX card? [crappy laptop]
I heard that I will need a PCI-E GFX card, a 2Ghz+ Processor and Vista [dx10 support] in order to play EVE RIII...this will affect the Linux users big time!
Please comfort me because I just got this game and I'm completely hooked, would be a shame if I couldn't play it anymore without spending over a thousand pounds to get a new computer JUST to play EVE.
Thanks

The main problem I can see with a torrent is that it will let people harvest the IP addresses of other Eve players and that gives a nice juicy target for hackers etc. to probe.

No. That system is not to run EVE, it's to run Vista. Rev 3 will bring a new graphics engine (Trinity 2) that will use DX10. If you have Vista you will be able to see the new nice graphics. However you will also have the choice to use the actual graphics engine so you have nothing to worry about. If you can play EVE now, you will be able to play Rev 3 too.
I for one don't plan to get Vista any time soon, simply because the performance under Vista is really bad. I have decent hardware and I don't plan to use most of my PC's power just to run the OS.

I wouldn't get too excited about this topic. Hosting a torrent costs CCP exactly the same as hosting a normal file, but takes off some load from their servers and gives their customers better transfers. There is no way in hell a serious company wouldn't make use of this technology that is available for virtually no cost ----- Arbitrator - Life & Death |

I'm not against the idea of a torrent, but technology has evolved such that the bottle neck now is at the users end, not the server end.
I have a 20mb cable connection and I have seen sites transfering to me at upwards of 1700 KB/s.. whilst the same file on torrent struggles to hit 200 KB/s (which is due to the windows restriction of 50 connections, which you can change, but rarly helps)
Really, even if 50'000 players were to starting downloading a 1.5gig file their servers shouldnt even be breaking a sweat.
well time will tell.. or CCP will correct me ;) but Torrent is quickly becoming old hat and only for those tight fisted companies who cant afford decent servers, and for those wanting to illegally file-share.

But I do agree with you. I've got a 15mb connection, and sometimes things are there before I click on it. I'll just make sure to download it through my browser and not the client.

How did you come to this conclusion when a torrent may be a few kilobytes and a client 1.2gb?
200,000+ people downloading 1.2gbs has got to cost a little bit in bandwidth
Very simple:
Hosting a torrent means that CCP would provide one 'seed' that has the whole patch/new client. Its speed (seeds) would be limited to bandwidth available to host the file normally.

I heard that I will need a PCI-E GFX card, a 2Ghz+ Processor and Vista [dx10 support] in order to play EVE RIII...this will affect the Linux users big time!
Welcome to EVE and fly safe.
Not exactly, the graphics update in the November expansion is DX9, there will be a DX10 version at some point in the future as well though, but this isn't it.

Sorry, as far as I know, this is NOT true. Rev3 (Trinity 2) will NOT use DX10, but DX9. At least this was the last thing, which I heard from CCP.
About the patch-size: I would also like to see a DVD with the new client. Interesting will be testing the client on Sisi, when we might have to DL it several times...

Yeah, but wouldn't CCP just need to seed to a fraction of the userbase before everyone could download it quickly?
To the guy that says torrents are slower than sites: Imagine 200,000 people downloading the same file from 1 site - your transfer rate will be crap. The benefit of torrents is that the more users that download it, the faster the speed you get it at. I've downloaded torrents (like Linux torrents) that have exceeded 1.3mb/s, never had more than half that from a normal http download.

A lot of UK based ISPs treat 1GB a day as the limit under their 'fair usage' policies, but hide it in their small print. Even unlimited ISPs are known to throttle transfer rates if you kick the pants out of it.

Hmm, they could put it a few days earlier on some high-speed servers, offer an offical torrent download also and when it goes life, they just offer a patch towards that version with the latest changes.
Then things should go quite smooth.
Well, if they release a dvd version right in time, they are probably doing it that way anyway.

I forget how much eve costs at the beginning? 15 bucks? Having hard copyies in stores will encourage people to just pickup that 15 dollar game and try it out.
Or even giving out free DVD's of the trial version. And if they likey they can setup an account. Which would spur growth in eve like never before. The amount of people online, the amount of people to shoot and game with would double.

Not meaning to bring WOW into this, but when Blizz released the $3 buck trial version DVD in the states their player base grew 15% in 6 months, with a slightly higher than was normal growth rate after that.
Now, I think the free client download CCP offers online is much better. I also know a lot of WOW players who bought the 3 buck DVD because it was a single disc that kept relatively up to date with patches. It might be worthwhile for EVE to consider a DVD release for the graphics upgrade.
If it came out aloung with the patch I'd buy the DVD at my local store. If it came out a week later, I'd just download the updated client again and burn it to a DVD. Much like how I have the Rev II client on CD.

Well i wuld recomend, if its not too much of a problem that the bulk of the data is released a weak or a cuple days before the acual server pach, later we can download another partial smaller if posibile to make the file be "whole" so we can pach, (for the people that have the first file).
That way people with slower internet connections can be sure to have a smooth transition.

It probably WILL be released separately, since CCP claims they will maintain compatibility with the old Trinity I engine in Rev 3.0 too. Source ? Some video interview from a month ago.

EVE is lucky to have a relatively "small" playerbase (yes, even with 200,000 and not counting trials). It's still feasible to run a centralized patch distribution even for large files, by using networked local servers. I have never had problems retrieving patches before - granted, the neraby limelight server is, oh, around 20 km away from my house
Blizzard is progressively using BitTorrent because of their ridiculously high playerbase. If you take a few million people, you can overload *any* centralized system, because you exceed the physical capablities of the network backbone's hardware (such as switches, routers and even the cables). This is what forces a decentralized approach.
That said, BitTorrent is cool stuff, and certainly does save the releasing party serious bandwidth, albeit at the cost of being less elegant than an auto-downloading auto-patcher... all in all, if CCP decided to get into torrent distribution, I wouldn't have a problem with it.

I think a good balance can be gained through having both basic download and torrent options.
CCP noted their rather great distribution system and more power to them for doing it! However if it is one thing that is still expensive on the internet's it is bandwidth rates.
Also one needs to note the amount of people willing to share bandwith or just wanting to use torrents. That ought to shave off a nice TB or 2.
I think CCP ought to go for it.

You would think CCP would release a production version of the client sometime before it goes live.
Many companies have to send production versions of the game to manufactires several weeks before release due to production and distribution schedules.
Any bugs found inbetween production and going live can be dealt with by a small patch.
But CCP do things there own way.

No you're wrong too. lol
The Trinity II engine is DX9. Devs have stated it will run on (almost) any PC that will currently run EVE, although you may have to turn the detail and effects down. It will replace the current graphics engine.
The DX10 and Vista only graphics engine is not coming till next year. It will not run unless you have Vista. It will be available side by side with the Trinity II engine.

I have a CD with the Eve klient. The version is Gemini I think. Its not even over version 1000. I will install it just for fun. See what it does.

I find all this whining amsuing. I have been playing LOTRO a little and when they update, it is horrendous. One recent patch I downloaded while their servers will still down, patched and when the servers came up it STILL took over 20 minutes for the client to update completely.

How did you get eve then its like 700mbs....
Been here since 2003, I have one of the original dvd boxes complete with the manual (that was out of date at launch).
I've suffered through all the patches up to now on dial up. I think the longest I have had to wait for a patch downloading was a week (via a download manager).

ok no flames please, but rather then a torrent or other idea's how about follow the system SOE uses when a large patch comes out, start seeding the files a week ahead of time ( or two) in small easy to download patches, say do 100 or 200 meg a day, so we dont have long delays, can snap the files up every day when we log in, and on patch day get the last tweaks and final polished files.makes it easier for those on dial up, or capped connections, and gets us back into the game faster.
hey its just an idea

... the Limelight CDN permitting of course. I'm on a 9 Mbps connection at home (approx. 19 minutes for 1.3 GB) but I get about 1 Mbps from Limelight. Each connection might be capped; I'll be looking into our arrangement with Limelight and will keep this in mind.
We're currently not planning to provide a torrent stream but will rather rely on the CDN (and beef it up if necessary) when we deploy our November expansion.
We're currently not planning to provide DVD media. It's not agile enough. The lead time for making the DVDs is a few weeks and significant logistics involved but we will be working down to the last few hours before the server opens. For Revelations II we rebuilt the client and server software a couple of times on the deployment day.
We're currently not planning to provide the download in multiple files, you would get the same effect by using a decent download manager.
The initial projections for the new client were 8 to 12 GB. With various clever trickery we believe we're now down to 1.3 GB. The internet is always getting better and we believe that a 1.3 GB download is within reason, it's only twice as big as the current client.

Wow, thanks CCP Explorer for an *AWESOME* reply. A few questions though.
When you say "various clever trickery", I assume you mean lossy and/or insanely slow-encryption lossless compression (especially for textures, I suppose), or maybe procedural texture generation, or other things I probably didn't even think about. But... I also assume you're talking "1.3 GB installer", and a much larger "installed" client, say 5, maybe even 8 GB ? So, how big will the new client be after installation ?
Also, how much space will it require on the C: drive to decompress ? The C: drive question is a "reminder" of the good old days of my first (and only) succesfull EVE client install from the "full client" download... I always just copied the installed client afterwards each and every time. Back then, I had to uninstall a lot of stuff and move the swap file to D just to be able to install EVE, because, like (probably many) other people, I keep my drive partitioned, with a relatively small first partition.
Finally, I "get" the concept that you like to rely on Limelight, but what harm would a single "official CCP seed" do, on top of the CDN alternative... at least for the first few days/weeks after launch ? You wouldn't even have to use your own tracker, any public one would do fine, as long as you confirm the hash to be "genuine" and you confirm you are the original .torrent seeders. I mean, even if you use one of your office PCs to seed at only 1 Mbps, I am pretty sure a lot of people would gladly keep seeding after they download the client.
if i see the word procedural on the eve board one more time....

I'd just like to say that seeing patch sizes and installed client sizes weeks before the update is available, as well as any sort of serious technical discussion of the technology side of things, from the mouth of an employee reminds me yet again why I play this game.
There are about 5-7 computers I have access to that get regluarly updated with EVE, so this next patch is gonna be a proper ****. Here's hoping the client upgrades are worth the ~9 gigs of download. ^_^

I don't know if this has been said before, but: just make your own torrent. No need to wait for CCP to do it for you. Download the client, make a torrent, and seed it using these forums and/or IRC (I doubt CCP would have any major objections to you making it easier to download their stuffs for free).
Same goes for the full client. Why wait for them to do it? Thus is the beauty of torrenting. ------

That's a big file, might take more than 13mins to download if you guys have the bandwidth when there are like a thousand people downloading too, well I guess it shouldn't be too much trouble if it's coming directly of level3's backbone ^^ On a side note if this installer of 1.3gb unpacks to nearly 8gb I'll be shocked, frightened and amazed all at the same time.

The install and all executable files in the install will be signed with CCP's code signing key. The security features introduced in Revelation 2.2 will also be in the November expansion. Finally, if we publish MD5 and SHA-1 checksums for the install then it adds an extra layer of security if players choose to get the install from 3rd party sources. Could you then consider to make the auto-patching of the test server client a bit more "feasible"? Because when you miss to patch it one day you have to again copy the whole TQ client and with 8 GB this could be very slow on some people's machines.

That process is going to stay mostly the same. We're making changes to support the more flexible client patching mechanism, which includes server-locking the client builds, but the process of going from a TQ build to SiSi/Multi builds is going stay pretty much the same.

And most of those 200,000 will have connections like 8M/512, where said 512 uppload is barely sufficient for sending out all ACK request for stuff he is downloading. Large scale BT doesn't work unless there are dedicated uploading machines (100mb+) in the swarm and even then, it can be easily choked if enough leechers are involved. So basically BT is poor man CND, but it still require buying and setting up extra servers to work as tracker and upload sources. Moreover, many ISP already throttle or even block BT, so for vast majority of people BT os greatly inferior to direct http download.
Also, pleeease get the download accelerator. I can suggest freeware Orbit Downloader, or paid Reget, both are awesome and will solve all your downloading problems.
To CCP: You are doing the most awesome job with patching process and it's delivery. Keeping full client size at 638MB after 4 years of constant updates, fixes and flurry of large content expansions is most impressive job. The fact that you have alws kept full client as direct http download, is also something to be praised for! compared to competition that forces their customer to pay to ransom to fileplanet and wait for hours in "queues", or doesn't provide digital download at all and condemns their clients to running to shop and waiting *for days* to finish patching every time they want to reinstall. Patching system itself - you probably broke few laws of physics and mathemathics making it, because in comparsion with everyone else, it's just stellar! Rev1 to REv2.3 (that's 3 full content patches, check patchnotes to see how bloody much was added inbetween!) weights a mere 36MB. Compare to POTBS which forces you to download 1.3-4GB on every single minor patch, or SOE convulsed crc-based-check patching process which takes 10 minutes just to start actual patch process!
In short: CCP's patching system is the most awesome thing and one of few fields where even biggest hater have to admit, that CCP CONSTANTLY DELIVERED

Never really had a problem with huge downloads. I just use:
wget -c -t 0 --read-timeout=5 --limit-rate=128k URL >/dev/null &
It takes a while, but it will keep reconnecting and resuming until it gets the whole thing, even if my connection goes down.
I'm sure you can find a windows equivalent (winget comes to mind).

Perhaps you can also find a game-magazine with included DVD, which will add the client to one of the next issues.

I just want to ask, could this whole big shibang be implemented on...say...4th-7th of november?
Maybe V for VEndetta style, "Remember, remember the 5th of november!!"
Reason i ask is that 8th of november is my b-day, 9th of nov is a friday etc. So i can easily skip three days and download all the stuff then, or wait until all the other peeps have downloaded it so the bandwith is ALL MINE!! *cough*
Anyhoo. Just wondering if that would be nice and possible.

blizzard, world of warcraft, 8.5mill. users worldwide. their downloader uses bittorrent by default, with option to get it through http. if a company like that, with that ammount of users, uses that method... they can't be much wrong. OH BTW: you can actually get chunks of the bigger patches 1-2 weeks before patch deployement, having the downloader running in background if you decide so.
sometimes i think ccp lives under a rock, and never ever look at any other company that might have a better system than they have (in any aspect)

Has CCP considered the idea of releasing Rev 3 in a set of smaller patches over the course of a month or so? Basicly have a patch twice a week so as to reduce the over all strain of the sum population trying to download a 1.3-3 gig patch all at once? I mean the current plan seems to have an outcome of a good junk of the population having to wait a few days before they can get a stable copy of the patch.

Well if you'd have read the dev posts, you'd notice the patch isn't finalised until an hour or so before the servers are onlined. So putting it 1-2 weeks before wouldn't help as a lot may have changed. * * * *

Moreover, many ISP already throttle or even block BT, so for vast majority of people BT os greatly inferior to direct http download.
Also, pleeease get the download accelerator. I can suggest freeware Orbit Downloader, or paid Reget, both are awesome and will solve all your downloading problems.

Lets say there are 30k users as someone mentioned at my speed (at max transfer) would be 3600 GB/s (Global transfer) if there are 100k it would be 12TB/s... How much would be the CDN network global transfer speed ?

The install and all executable files in the install will be signed with CCP's code signing key. The security features introduced in Revelation 2.2 will also be in the November expansion. Finally, if we publish MD5 and SHA-1 checksums for the install then it adds an extra layer of security if players choose to get the install from 3rd party sources. I would however recommend this site.

I might be getting confused here but I think the 18 gig size is probably the updated graphics for the game(confusion part meaning I am not sure if this is the Direct X10 upgrade etc)-. There is something like 200 shiptypes in the game and if you have all new high res skins/textures for them I am sure that will take up a fair amount of space. And they might also include new things like music, videos, graphics and other elements to bring it inline with the ambulation project, whenever that day may come.
Also you have to remember that 18 gig quote is probably what the files would be uncompressed. I am pretty sure they will be using compression to get them smaller as well. TBH, a executable can sometimes have a compression program inside it. For instance you might download a demo, and its 1.2 gigs, but when you run it and install it you end up with say a 3 gig folder. A way to see what I am talking about is to open up a executable (last time I did was back with Doom 3 I think) with WinRAR and you will see all the files and folders in them.
But OT: 1.2 gigs is really nothing in this day and age. I feel for the dialups I really do, but thats what friends are for. I remember when I was last on dialup and one of the games I played had a 2 gig update. I asked a clan buddy to send me the patch on a dvd or cds. Saved me a crap load of time lol. But tbh, a hard copy of the new EVE would be sweet.

How would you consider the testing on sisi?
At this moment it is merely making a copy of tranq and patch it with a little patch of let's say 5 to 10mb
Like a former poster said, missing 1 patch at a day makes you re-install the complete TQ version.
Will we have a "Standard" sisi set to patch on during testing time?
Because downloading 1.3gb, extracting it to a full blown 5-8GB within every 'missed' patch is not really appreciated I guess.

At this moment it is merely making a copy of tranq and patch it with a little patch of let's say 5 to 10mb Like a former poster said, missing 1 patch at a day makes you re-install the complete TQ version. Will we have a "Standard" sisi set to patch on during testing time? Because downloading 1.3gb, extracting it to a full blown 5-8GB within every 'missed' patch is not really appreciated I guess.

Torrents are one of the best form of file transfer. However with n00b users and n00b ISPs that's not always the case. Regardless I would be in full support of a torrent file distribution for EVE.

To give you more information on how we're planning to deliver the November expansion:
There will be two client installs available. Both will contain the new Trinity graphics engine and the exact same code. The difference will be in the art content. The smaller client, codenamed "Classic", will only contain the DX8 content (installer size about 650 MB) while the larger client will contain both the DX8 and the new DX9 SM3 content (installer size around 1.3 GB).
When we release the expansion then all Revelations II clients will be patched to the new "Classic" client, using the regular autopatcher. The patch will be about 15-30 MB since the art content is mostly the same (about 20 new ships). On the first startup the client will check the capabilities of the hardware and if DX9 SM3 capable offer to download the new art content. This download will be done in the background (using BITS) and you can immediately start playing if you want while it downloads. The download will continue even if the client is not running. Once the download is complete the client will offer you to patch to the full client.
We're looking at offering a torrent download of the installers and the content upgrade but no news yet on that front.

As implied here and stated in other threads, you will have the option to continue using the current DX8 graphics, so the minimum requirements won't change. The shiny new graphics will require a DirectX 9.0c card (Shader Model 3.0 support). I'm not sure if the other requirements will be affected, or just the graphics card. ---------------------------

We will increase the minimum operating systems specifications from Windows 2000 SP2 to SP3. Otherwise the minimum specifications (for DX8 support) will not change, as far as we know at this point. To support the new graphics then a video card supporting DX9 SM3 will be required.

Man I cant wait for this patch, even if it is 1.3Gig, but it might be worth CCP making a pre-launch version of the patch like they do with Half-Life. And the patch only comes active when the server tells the client thats the patch its using. That way we can all have it ready before the offical date...

Edited by: Korov Dutor on 10/10/2007 14:06:26 I currently play Eve on a cellular broadband connection, which so far has been working great, but a GB+ download just isn't going to happen.
Any chances of a CD being made available either by mail order or local retailers? I have to believe there are others in similar or worse situations.

Can't I just say that I want to download the file immediately without using BITS? I don't have much problem with 1.3 GB really. It's a nice feature though, for people with slower connections.

Both installs and all patches will be available for direct download... possibly even torrents as well (although I'm not making any promises at this time).

I looked it up and this means that my Ati X800 won't be able to run the new graphics engine....bummer, I thought I owned at least a half-decent card.

Thanks for the info / responses CCP. Can't wait for the new graphics!
I would like a torrent download as well, but by the sounds of what CDN is, a download manager and a few hours wont be that bad either.
May I suggest you reiterate to the community the important points of this thread in a sticky or a client news item? There seems to be allot of people who do not realize that there will be two clients, how big the new client will be, how the patch will proceed, etc. Disseminating this information to the non-forum junkies would be a good idea IMHO.

The option to play as we do today after a max 30mb download while the 1gb + of data downloads in the background is great! it isnt the torrent solution, but its better then having to wait through that whole download before we can play.
Personally, I think that is a great compromise and sounds like a winner to me. I remember when sony did the graphics updates to eq and you had to wait for hundreds of mb of data going at barely dialup speeds while everyone dl'ed the patch before you could even play was *aweful*. I am glad that CCP made a way for us to enjoy the game while we get the big files for later use. --------------------------

I support a torrent of this.
And even if you guys don't manage to do it, the community likely will (as long as a standalone patch does get put out anyway).

I support a torrent, but even if an 'official' torrent is not supplied, I strongly /sign posting any / all of the following so that 3rd parties can host a torrent, and 4th parties can be sure they received an unmodified download, in order of preference:
* md5sum hash (See here for Checking md5sum in Windows) * PGP (or the free equivalent GPG) generated hashes (ie MD5, SHA1, RIPEMD160, SHA256, SHA384, SHA512, SHA224) * OpenSSL-based hashes (ie RMD160, MD5, SHA1) * PGP / GPG detached signature
