I think a good balance can be gained through having both basic download and torrent options.
CCP noted their rather great distribution system and more power to them for doing it! However if it is one thing that is still expensive on the internet's it is bandwidth rates.
Also one needs to note the amount of people willing to share bandwith or just wanting to use torrents. That ought to shave off a nice TB or 2.
I think CCP ought to go for it.

Edited by: Rilder on 27/09/2007 23:52:21 My 30 KB/s max speed will make 1.1-1.3 gig take around 24-30 hours to DL. Not to bad, I've dled worse.
Just fyi, its impossible to get faster here and even if I could I wouldn't be able to afford. --

It wouldnt be the first time.
The Exodus client when it first hit all them years ago was released as an official torrent because there was no patch from the previous version ( Castor ).
So if they've done it once no reason why they shouldnt do it again.

It wans not postponed. They did say they would do a DX9 first (for improving game performance and the UI) and then later a DX10 version.

You would think CCP would release a production version of the client sometime before it goes live.
Many companies have to send production versions of the game to manufactires several weeks before release due to production and distribution schedules.
Any bugs found inbetween production and going live can be dealt with by a small patch.
But CCP do things there own way.

Besides if CCP launches a massive marketing campaign (which they have to do with their current goal to get more customers) and people cannot download the new client they prolly tick off a lot of the not to be newbies.

But for some of my corpmates... ouch. I have one that's on dial-up in Italy. I sometimes send him EVE patches in an E-MAIL attachment, because he can't get them otherwise. _

No. That system is not to run EVE, it's to run Vista. Rev 3 will bring a new graphics engine (Trinity 2) that will use DX10. If you have Vista you will be able to see the new nice graphics. However you will also have the choice to use the actual graphics engine so you have nothing to worry about. If you can play EVE now, you will be able to play Rev 3 too.
No you're wrong too. lol
The Trinity II engine is DX9. Devs have stated it will run on (almost) any PC that will currently run EVE, although you may have to turn the detail and effects down. It will replace the current graphics engine.
The DX10 and Vista only graphics engine is not coming till next year. It will not run unless you have Vista. It will be available side by side with the Trinity II engine.

Really, I'd pay some money to get myself a hard copy of EVE. Even if it's just for the heck of having one! (24/7 download rig running at home, 2 gig will be easy in one night.
Also, i support the torrent idea. Heck, i'd even setup a temporary tracker myself if needed! (tough i think people like Chribba would be more up to the job...)
I have a CD with the Eve klient. The version is Gemini I think. Its not even over version 1000. I will install it just for fun. See what it does.
On topic: I love the idea of Torrent. I would seed just for the fun of it. ------------------------------------------------ If there is doubt, there is no doubt.

I find all this whining amsuing. I have been playing LOTRO a little and when they update, it is horrendous. One recent patch I downloaded while their servers will still down, patched and when the servers came up it STILL took over 20 minutes for the client to update completely.

Been here since 2003, I have one of the original dvd boxes complete with the manual (that was out of date at launch).
I've suffered through all the patches up to now on dial up. I think the longest I have had to wait for a patch downloading was a week (via a download manager).

ok no flames please, but rather then a torrent or other idea's how about follow the system SOE uses when a large patch comes out, start seeding the files a week ahead of time ( or two) in small easy to download patches, say do 100 or 200 meg a day, so we dont have long delays, can snap the files up every day when we log in, and on patch day get the last tweaks and final polished files.makes it easier for those on dial up, or capped connections, and gets us back into the game faster.
hey its just an idea

... the Limelight CDN permitting of course. I'm on a 9 Mbps connection at home (approx. 19 minutes for 1.3 GB) but I get about 1 Mbps from Limelight. Each connection might be capped; I'll be looking into our arrangement with Limelight and will keep this in mind.
We're currently not planning to provide a torrent stream but will rather rely on the CDN (and beef it up if necessary) when we deploy our November expansion.
We're currently not planning to provide DVD media. It's not agile enough. The lead time for making the DVDs is a few weeks and significant logistics involved but we will be working down to the last few hours before the server opens. For Revelations II we rebuilt the client and server software a couple of times on the deployment day.
We're currently not planning to provide the download in multiple files, you would get the same effect by using a decent download manager.
The initial projections for the new client were 8 to 12 GB. With various clever trickery we believe we're now down to 1.3 GB. The internet is always getting better and we believe that a 1.3 GB download is within reason, it's only twice as big as the current client.
