Well the ships have been remodelled, so they WILL look different, however surely not radically different. Just look at the differences on the screenshots that are floating around.

Well CCP..
My GFX card handles Shader 3, BUT the major question is, Do your upgraded server weasels support Shader 3?
Also another question, will memory requirements be increased? Would be nice if you could post an upgraded system requirements (along with recommended)

How does the new stuff behave on SM2 cards, compared to SM3? I've never cared much about graphics...I just want the game to be responsive enough that I don't lose response time compared to kids with a $6k gaming system.

Edited by: Kernel Sander on 16/10/2007 22:00:27 Is the MacOSX release (which you guys promised for November, IIRC) under the same constraints?
Will it be classic only?
Are you still releasing it?
Can you give out any information at all?
Please?

Mac and Linux are Classic since TransGaming's Cedega / Cider only support DX9 SM2. For more information about that release, please read this thread.

(Those) servers don't do graphics, they're pretty short-sighted upgraded weasels/hamsters.

It is unfortunate that Wine does not support SM3.0 yet (nor does Cedega aparently).
One can only hope that there are possibilities to use some of the new stuff with SM2.0 too. (read somewhere that bioshock and other new games could be used with the older SM with some tweaking). Unfortunatly given the current track record of CCP I highly doubt they will make any effort. $6k...my geforce7800 when i got it last year was like $150 with rebate from buy.com. Id imagine its even less now. Ibet you could probably update to a SM3 card for less than $100.

I have a question.
Quote: What requirements are there for the new content? To be able to use the new content you will need a graphics card that supports Shader Model 3
So if my video card for example doesn't support SM3. Will I be capable of continuing with the game? So it is simply the "new content" is all that won't work for me.
Which arises 2 questions. How far does this "new content" go? Does it mean I cannot ever use the T2 battleships? or simply that the gfx aren't as good looking?
Also will the new content be optional to download?

The "new content" is just a bunch (1 GB worth) of shinyer textures and models.
Also: looking forward to the patch: I have BITS always enabled, and tell everybody to keep it that way since i like the fact that MS has this autoupdate feature for security patches!

I already hate that BITS framework/application/whatever. Be free to use it as main distribution lane, but don't forget 'vanilla' http download as well
Secondly - you're a company with over two hundred employees and milions of Ç of pure income. I'm pretty sure you can afford one or two basic server ppackages and run them as tracker&seeders. We all know BT sucks compared to CDN, but there are hundreds of your customers asking for it. They want it, so be nice and deliver. They are your bloody customers FFS. If having BT download will make them happy, then so be it.

If I'm understanding the blog correctly, you can just never install the content upgrade and your system will continue using the old GFX. Now I'm not positive about this, but I think that the SM3 version of the engine will in fact be more efficient than the other (though it is using higher-poly models), so you probably wouldn't be sacrificing much performance anyway.
What he's asking is if he can use the current content on the new engine, since being lower-poly count and all it would presumably run quicker on an engine which is optimized to actually use a modern graphics accelerator.

Graphics have... no impact on servers

I have a 8600 GT 512 MB and it runs Bioshock and Unreal 3 demo without issue.

Thanks for the response. As for the whole MS fanboy thing... its not really that bad or good. Personally I've kept the service offline as basically it's never used and if it's needed it can be activated by whatever program.
On another note. I've ordered myself a nice new video card. Should significantly make things run smoother as my video card as it is seems to be closer to the weakest link.

The recommended system configuration says RAM: 1024 MB.
Will this change with Trininty II (shiny new high-res textures and models and stuff)?
I haven't have any low memory problems with EVE, even when running 2 accounts at the same time, but am thinking to upgrade to 2GB. -----

To any CCP dev: Has any testing been done to see what kind of system and graphics card is needed to run two clients simultaneously with the new engine? I have a Geforce 7800 (with 256MB from the top of my head), a P4 3.0 GHz HT and 2 GB of Ram and a dual-screen 19" LCD monitor setup, all A-brand quality components.
I usually run both clients on a dual screen setup at resolution 1152x8xx (something). Barring any special circumstances of course, but in general should I still be able to run two clients simultaneously using the new graphics engine? .

Not everything is a grand conspiracy by Mircrosoft.
Applying the two render paths we do have has already soaked up piles of man-years. While they could implement an SM2 path as well, they have to balance the benefit of doing so with the extra time it will take both to create, and in ongoing maintenance.
In terms of people limited to SM2 by hardware, they are a relatively small group, and will only get smaller.
In terms of implementing an SM2 path specifically for wine/cedega support, they will also have to balance factors such as likely take-up of the client under that platform, likely timescale for SM3 support being added etc. It may be that they choose to assist the SM3 support project instead if it's going to be a better use of resources (in the same way as they've supported Python development in the past). ------- There is no magic Wand of Fixing, and it is not powered by forum whines. |

Edited by: RiotRick on 17/10/2007 08:19:19 Unfortunately I have a graphics card that only supports SM 2.0 (ATI Mobility Radeon X700). The machine I use is a laptop so upgrading atm is not an option. So I'll be stuck with the Trinity Classic client for a while.
Will this classic client use the new graphic engine with the old graphics, or will it still use the old engine? I'm wondering about this, because we've been reading about all these nice (performance) improvements in the graphics engine besides the new shiny grapichs. Will the classic client benefit from most of these improvements while using the old less shiny graphics?

I may be out of the loop, but OpenGL has extensions for this. Why a WineHQ-based api would NOT support SM3.0 is beyond me.

ok ..
If you have a Geforce 6 card or better you have SM 3.
If you have Radeon x### card or better you have SM 3.
This is subject to change for certain budget variants of said cards, of course.
When in doubt, run the app.

Please stop spreading disinformation. The Radeon Xxxx family (X300 to X850) do not have SM3 support. ATI introduced SM3 with the X1000 (X1300-X1950) family. |
