The next evolution of EVE is looming on the horizon and many questions about upgrade paths, patch distribution and size, Torrent support, etcetera.
In his introduction to the community, 2Kay answers those questions and many more in his new Dev Blog about the deployment of Trinity, our next free major content expansion.
Delivering Trinity.

Can't wait, Trinity will be awesome!
Question though, I have BITS disabled (as I'm sure others out there do as well) since I don't like the idea of MS being able to upload stuff to my machine whenever they feel like it. Will CCP offer a regular download for the new content in addition to the BITS download?

It looks like I need a swish new gfx card with SM3 goodness. Oh well, might as well get one with duel output so I can run two monitors.
Edit: swear filter being too keen.

Short question. Basically, would it be possible to use new engine with old, fast graphics? Even if I have SM3 compat card, I do not want to waste too much of overall system perfomance to feed graphics only (again). -- Thanks CCP for cu<end of sig> |

1. How will this works for the test server (singularity)?
2. Thanks for this short devblog about the deployment of the patch, now please deliver the real devblog about Trinity II.

The 'for client security' part is specious -- the client can be securely distributed by anyone so long as CCP publishes the checksums of the package. There is no need for them to host their own torrent tracker / seed cluster to make that distribution method safe.
Furthermore, CCP doesn't need to host an entire seeding cluster. just one seed -- let the power of bittorrent take care of the rest. If someone gets the entire file via a non-torrent method, they can always join the torrent with the fully-formed file and immediately begin seeding.

I'm very sceptical about BITS- for one thing, how are the Mac/Linux beta users going to be using this?
And I, like many Windows users, have BITS disabled.
Will there be alternatives for download? HTTP or Bittorrent? Yes, Bittorrent can't be relied upon entirely, but it can certainly be used by the majority of EVE players...

Argh i cant find out if my Graphic card supprots SHM3...
As ATI(AMD) *curses* stopped supporting the mobility series i had to take drivers from another graphic card ^^. I can only say that this (Desktop-)Card supports it ^^ But cant say, that my real one does...
Although on the I-Net i found some notes that my card supports it. So there is still hope
I got a mobility radeon x1400 in my notebook btw ^^ Luv it

Both patches will be available for download (the application patch from Revelations II to Trinity Classic, as well as the art content patch from Trinity Classic to Trinity) as well as full installers for both editions. We're investigating offering a torrent but I can't make any promises yet.

If I'm understanding the blog correctly, you can just never install the content upgrade and your system will continue using the old GFX. Now I'm not positive about this, but I think that the SM3 version of the engine will in fact be more efficient than the other (though it is using higher-poly models), so you probably wouldn't be sacrificing much performance anyway. --- Proud Amarr pilot.

i have a question about what all goes into the new "graphics content"... does this mean if a ship gets a new 3-D model in trinity, then will the classic version still use the old 3-D model? i am sure that the new graphics will have shiny new textures, special effects, and even some improved background images, but what about the actual 3-D models? i just think it would be silly and maybe even confusing if things looked radically different between the two versions...
~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ Take away the risk and it would make flying around in space utterly pointless.
Take away the flying around part and you make EVE into a space themed spreadsheet application. |
