Are there any known statistics?

LOL if ambulation is for women, call me a CHIKITA!
I'm stoked for ambulation. It can open a hell of alot of possiblities.
Wouldn't less combat orientated things be more appealing to women? Say designing ships, stations outfits and things?
Although it may come off as sexist, women do tend to be less aggressive (durr lets go blow stuff up, boss) and more constructive (I wanna make it look pretty).

I obviously play a female avatar in EVE,this however has been the exception not the rule for me in other MMO's I tend to play whatever interests me from a character creation standpoint. My "mood" of course determines allot as well.
I don't make gender assumptions when I converse with other players,I find it rather irrelevant. It is the quality of the player that I care about

For one thing it stops people from refering to you as 'he' all the time. Even if you play a female character they still do it. If you are a guy and play a male character and your friends in game would refer to you as 'she' all the time i'm sure you'd tell them that you're a 'he' in fact without trying to advertise anything.

I gently correct any player that assumes that I am a gender other than what my portrait displays. It doesn't bother me when it happens.
I am particularly fond of being called "dude" I usually ask that the player interject "ette" as a suffix next time.
"Hey Bro" is another favorite.
I prefer not to know the "true" gender of player. If I know and it is different from what their portrait displays I still tend to address them according to what I see in their portrait anyway.
I would like to commend the male population of EVE. I have played for 6 months and have never been disrespected because of my gender or had to deal with anything vulgar or sexually innappropriate.
Thanks "GUYS"

introduce malls and shopping ... and make it a pvp activity too oh wait, i think you were looking for a serious answer :P check this out: http://www.nickyee.com/daedalus/archives/000432.php The Daedalus Project has some surveys posted on mmorpgs and some of these show what factors make men and women want to play, what exactly interests them in the game. Since so few girls play EVE I would suppose it just doesn't give them what they are looking for in an mmorpg.

Make a Pink Ship damnit! Well just kidding, though my friend would love that lol. Honestly, I think just more socail interaction other than beating eachother over the head with weapons tends to be a turn on for us of the fairer sex so this next big revolution to the gaming experience should help.
I guess if I had to say the one major thing that draws some of us as it is, it is that you are rarely really hit on or given all those lovely loser one-liners thanks to being so many boy-girls LOL. Honestly, I find it very amusing seeing the boys playing girls and even more so if they are making an honest RP attempt to act like one (though Gods not in a stereotypical "girly" fashion I hope, unless it really BURNS someone you just killed, then it is funny.). +++++++++++++++ I saw the Sign...!

Spaceship MMO + girls really does not compute. The game would need more socialization that feels personal instead of just ships communicating to eachother. Some deeper character customization might help too.
According to other MMOs I could say that roleplaying servers/posisbility to roleplay well attracts the female population to some extent too. Or at least it seems like there'd be more people on those servers who at least claim to be female. |

I know several different kinds of female Eve players. One is a total yarr pirate who will blow you up without question, I must say she scares me.
Then theres this other one who has a corp of alt-miners, loves nothing better than chewing on veldspar all day and building ships. Wouldn't hurt a fly, although she does ask others to that for her.
And then theres one kind of imbetween those two enjoys to pvp, enjoys a bit of ratting, and generally acts like your average pvp player. Although she does a mean Celestis with which you do NOT want to ****.
So to sum up, I don't think you can lump women into a group and say what they are interested in. Mostly it seems they like to blow stuff up or chew on a roid like the rest of Eve. ============================================

Edited by: SoftRevolution on 16/11/2007 10:39:48 EVE feels really antisocial when you start playing. There's little or no reason to group up to do any of the low level PVE stuff. I think fixing that in combination with the ambulation stuff and faction warfare (i.e. moar ingame fiction and social stuff) would probably take care of a lot of the more stereotypical reasons why EVE is unappealing to women.
Mind you, most of the girls I know who game I met playing Planetside which was a glorified FPS. Not sure how social and friendly that game was really. Despite claims otherwise I'm sure most of them just liked shooting people in the facebones.
Interestingly I've had the same responses from the couple of people I've tried to get interested in EVE regardless of gender - that it's repetitive, that there is too much travelling and that the amount of time it takes to be able to do anything worthwhile is far too long. EVE RELATED CONTENT |

Some neat ideas. Hoping for more though, especially from females.
As an aside, to the people who are "defending" female eve players, there is no need.
This is not an attack on the female character what so ever. There are clear distinctions between male and female tastes (as you can see, only 5 % of eve is female). The point of this thread is to address this issu and to add content that would be more appealing to females in general.
Alot of people have mentioned that girls are no different than guys and then list friends they've met on eve. Yet wouldn't that be skewed? The girls who do come on to play eve are attracted to what eve is offereing now. So the ones that are here would have more similiar mindset to the males who already play.
The goal of this thread is, however, to bring up content that would be appealing to female gamers outside of eve, while still maintaining the core that is eve.

Yeah-- would you like to be the only girl in a room of 19 guys, 12 of which have no discernible social skills? No. Probably not.
Just a thought. The females in-game are not going to outright tell you who they are.

There is more to women than just dating them. It is possible to be friends with someone from the opposite sex and to engage in activitise with them that are platonic.
There are many reasons why introducing materials that would attract females to eve would be beneficial:
1) opens up new market possibilities 2) diversifies the gaming experience (through content) 3) would help expand the eve population 4) would diversify the population, giving a richer game experience
etc etc etc

I flew (flown?) with two female pilots that I knew were women and would not hesitate to fly with them again. They were as ruthless & calculating as any other pilot I have met.
On the note of what can be used to attract more into the game: I don't believe game content is a major contributor here as much as the ratio of women-to-men that actually get into gaming in general. I wish it wasn't so though, because in my experience women bring a totally different aspect to any game due to their unique approach to most things. Example: Males see a fly and pick up the biggest object he can gets his hands on and smashes it. Females breakout fly strips and poisons so the creature will die slowly and/or horribly.

I think the biggest barrier to female players is the fact that it is a science fiction game. The reality is that eve is probably more suited to female players than most other games the slow burning and adaptable aspect of the game play make it perfect. The problem is hooking them first I could suggest advertising specifically aimed at women but that has probably already been done. On the subject of ambulation I don't want it, it makes me very afraid I fear change. Saskia (female by the way)

Ambulation will help bring more females to Eve, and not because they can wear clothes and decorate stuff, but because it can add depth to the context of relationships between players. We males are a pretty shallow lot compared to females when it comes to relationships. Social interaction and the vagaries of social politicking are lost on most of us gorillas, but contain depths of play potential for females that no game mechanics can ever simulate. Game mechanics however can help create the environments for more social interaction, and Ambulation will do that very well I think. -AS

This is going to sound completely nuts to most people, it sounds pretty goofy to me too, but I think females would like this basic idea. I will for lack of a better term call it a "friend tree". Allow players to say who their friends are, a public list and a private list, and a player can allow anyone in the private list to see the rest of the private list, anyone can see the public friends list.
If you click on a player's "friend" it will take you to that player's friend list, etc. etc, round and round. As a guy I don't really give a carp about something like this as it holds little value to me. But females love that kind of stuff in my experience. It adds a social element to the game, who's in who's in crowd, who knows who, why does sally the evil -10 pirate know Jenny the happy fluffy carebear? These things interest females to no end and are mostly ignored by males and/or not taken very seriously by males.
It adds a very deep social element that is completely under player controls that has zero impact on our little ships.

You want more female players in EVE?
The answer is simple.
Step 1: Ambulation. Step 2: Introduce decorating.
It MAY sound sexist or whatever thing you want to call it, but the MAJOR element in SW:G and female playerbase was that you could get a house, decorate it and by gods, was it fun.
HEck, they even had a Decorating competition monthly if i remember correctly.
And it's not "bad for EVE", if anything else, it would make the space pewpew more manly, dangerous, out there and "living it up".

Except when your ship get blown up because you know the wrong people who know the wrong people....etc
Seriously, if you want a 'deep social element' look at the politics, look at the market, though, run awaaay from missions.
As for attracting women: As with all things, if you try and make everyone happy you end up with flavourless mash. Eve is good as it is, and it offers something for most people. Good enough i think.

But, if you mentioned to thoe same girls, while showing EVE, that there's ambulation coming, where you can walk around stations, hang out in bars, decorate your own apartment with cool stuff...well..you get the point.
Women rarely ask things like "well can you do this in the game?", and mostly wait for you to show what you can do. But i could almost bet(dependant on girl entirely), that MOST girls would like those features.

I'm not offended by your comment, but it does make me look creepy!
This thread is to serve one purpose: to generate information and ideas on how to increase the population of female eve players.
It's pretty obvious that video games are a male dominated hobby; however, if you've been paying attention to Nintendo, you'll notice things are changing. Markets are becoming saturated and games are becoming repetitive. What nintendy is doing, is creating something that is appealing to old video game junkies, part time players and people who don't play video games.
Now before anyone chews my head off with "the wii blows goats compared to 360's !337 grafix!1!1!one!!!1! eleven", try to take a look at the similiarities between even and the Wii/DS.
In eve, the developers have given a wide range of choices and try not to force the players into anything. This parallels with wii because Nintendo is creating a wide variety of games for many different people. In eve you can be a miner, trader, corporate head-honcho, a pirate, a bounty hunter etc etc. In short, it appeals to a wide variety of game styles and preferences.
Although much work has been put in to eve to create a sandbox, open ended game, the lack of a female audience is quite apparent. You might argue that it's video games or MMORPG's that don't appeal, which is definitly partlyt he cause, yet it is not entirely the reason. Look at WOW for example, (don't worry, I do not want Eve to become a WOW), when I played for the month or so that I played, I noticed far more females there than on Eve.
That was probably the only thing that I liked more on WOW than Eve (everything else on eve is just better). So my intent, I assure you, is only to bring up interesting ideas to develope Eve further more into the sandbox style game that it is, by catering more to the female population.
There are some wonderful female-oriented games (if you can call them that) such as "The Sims". I think if some of the detailes of "The Sims" were implemented into this game, it would develop into a more robust, wider appealing, sandbox style game that more people would enjoy. Beyond that, the people that alreay play or played Eve could expand their activities into other realsm (Inter-galactic casino tournaments, outer-realm monster collecting, costume design and manufacturing etc etc)

This thread is to serve one purpose: to generate information and ideas on how to increase the population of female eve players.
Sorry,I did not want you to feel creepy.
Thank you for responding and for the clarification of your topic. I understand now.
In appreciation, and to honor the intent of your thread I have been trying to think of ways that EVE could appeal to and sign-up more women. Unfortunatly,I'm at a loss for a specific idea.
In general,it is my belief that EVE could benefit from better marketing. That may seem odd considering the game is more than four years old, however McDonalds,Coca-Cola etc. spend 10's of millions or more every year to keep their product name in the forefront.
Believe it or not I discovered this game by accident while checking out game reviews on a Christian video game review website. My first MMO was SWG in 03'...but I never really followed all the new games being developed or in the case of EVE the other games of that time.
If EVE slipped past me...a player semi-immersed for 4 years in the MMO community..I think that may signal a need for better marketing.
For what it is worth...

Replace the M with a B and you're much closer to the target. All those companies also have vastly more resources than CCP.

Edited by: Kalahari Wayrest on 19/11/2007 22:20:47 ...There's a bit of a fault to this line of questioning.
The idea that there are specific things that could be done to 'attract females' just makes so many assumptions, the main being that there is a one ideal you have of 'female players' that you form in your head initially before you think of things which might appeal to the imaginary 'her'.
Which is balls.
Turn the question around and you can see how silly it is.
What could you do to a game to get men to play it?
Now look at eve and consider how diverse it is, given your arguement assumes that by needing to attract females, it currently only attracts men (or is designed in that way) there is a plethora of different play styles at work - eve is dynamic and diverse and able to suit different types of players. I'd be unable to break it down really, given peoples 'roles' tend to overlap, but the game play is very varied and allows both peace and pewpew, cooperation and competiton, and all the space inbetween.
As such, there's no one idealized 'man' who plays eve, and the different roles players undertake are often competing and conflicting.
So why are you assuming theres one idealized 'female' who could be appealed to? Any attempts to 'target' females like this, and simplify them into one characteristic of 'femininity' (some great examples in this thread, females like decorating, the sims, nintendogs...) is misguided and patronising.
Leave eve the way it is. The players who like it will play it, the ones who don't won't. As for less women playing games than men, society I think, needs to change before that stigma is lost rather than the games attempting to feminize them to make women playing games more socially acceptable.
edit: the short version is, my problem with your question isn't that you aren't treating women the same as men, it's that you're suggesting all women are the same. __________________________ Indulge Me Consider Yourself Indulged - Immy ♥ Wow immy scored - Xorus

Finally. A good response. My boyfriend tried getting me to eve for months before I finally relented to just try the trial. I said there was no way I would like something like Eve.
I really like Eve.

Seriously if girls wanted to hang out with a load of acne-ridden guys with aspergers they'd go volunteer to work with the disabled
The number one thing you could all do to "attract girls to eve lol" is to shut the hell up

I take offence in you stating that aspergers is a grave disability, and I also dislike the tone in which you use it. My girlfriend is a so called aspergers, and I happen to love her still. There's nothing bad with it once you can handle it.

Um. I would feel really weird if the guys I fly with weren't vulgar or sexually inappropriate, because then I'd know they were being different and out of their element because I was there! I do put my face into my hands a lot but they make me laugh.
