That is the trickiest major airport runway in America ending literally at a drop into the ocean (well...a bay).
Unbelievably stupid decision how the airline even approved that landing with no experience onboard. I saw on the news that it was his first time landing a 777 but he'd made several landings there before but not for the last few years. And the plane guidance system at SFO was switched off for maintenance. The lack of backup also raises questions.
Now it turns out the Senior Pilot who was supervising the landing was on his first training mission !!
You don't "train" landings at SFO with that little (no) experience. |

Nope, nothing was done right. Almost everyone survived apparently due to the newer seats that were installed recently. They absorb a lot more shock from ground impacts now, so everyone was not literally flung onto the runway at full speed.
edit: The 2 teenagers who were run over were sitting in the back and their seats went off with the detached tail section. |
