Now if you are going to say "i was joking, I said: Dude", well, I'ma California native, people still say Dude here, mostly where it originated. Not as much, but not used as a joke tag. The comment is still serious, especially to someone who cares about internet security. No, XP isn't "pretty good", and if you think it is good enough to use it, it's your dilemma. Well these were actually quite reasonable responses to what I said.

For over ten years I do a scan once every year from a bootable medium.
Then I reinstall. It's a habit.

In all these years I got something ONCE, straight from microsoft.com,
which I find hilarious. I was able to tell, because my system started to behave differently.
Now with the SSD it's a tad more complicated, but with HDDs only it was really
easy for me to notice differences in response times ... as example.

I went through the taskmanager to check if there's something that doesn't belong there
and there was. Killing it didn't work. It reloaded. I digged a bit and found the program on
the filesystem. took me a while.

deleting it wasn't possible... so I wrote a batchfile that kept trying,
deleted the program from memory and the batchfile deleted it accordingly on the HDD.

Then I made sure it's really gone.

That was once in over a decade. I'm sure I'm safe. My weird mind lets me notice even slight differences
in respond times or when cpu or ram aren't at values they actually should be.

Imagine that.... if you don't download ****, don't go to ****** websites and don't install crap,
while actually knowing the machine and it's behaviour and timing... then you don't need AVs at all.

Besides that, my system is always up to date and Microsoft security essentials seem to be working.
I can't tell... they never tell me that something's wrong.

I understand that I'm a rare case, though.

that's what i call that thing where you're able to notice things like the slight changes in a machine like response times that, as far as i can tell, most people don't notice.

i can do that on basically any machine. i can just know something isn't quite right.

And actually a pretty good one too. though relatively new in recent years, so you probably were not running it back then. M$ has been starting to push security in recent years, which is a good change form their old ways.

Depending on what intrusion you get, you can usually tell, but some of them you may not really get rid of until you reformat. Some of them can even disguise themselves as something easy to remove, while it replicates elsewhere, or even on removable media etc. But yes, they can get in and get noticed, then removed completely, more the norm probably, but not always the case. Certainly they have become more sophisticated in recent years. Weapons wielded by individuals as well as governments.

But yes, AV is less important than keeping updated and having good browsing habits. But still greatly advisable to have it, and even some form of firewall as well.

I learned how to hack the registry in college, what a waste hehe. Well, actually I've had to fix broken systems with that, from nasty little invasive monsters, especially dirty spyware that can even come loaded on off the shelf PC's

My brain is weird. I consciously notice even slight changes in my surroundings
or people. I always get hilarious reactions when I spot weight differences of a single kg
on women I see every day and they go check and confirm.

It's quite demanding under certain circumstances and no fun at all.

Maybe you have that too, but haven't realized it enough yet. :)

i can do similar. i notice everything.....

it's annoying because i react to it as well. if i think i see something in the corner of my eye, i'll look.

annoying when there's actually nothing there.

also means i have to have a completely dark room and as little noise as possible to sleep....

mostly noise, now i think about it. i once heard a whine while in my dads car, whenever he pulled left. no one else heard it until it got worse and needed looking at. stuff like that.

I've stopped seeing things that aren't there. It needs training, but it's possible not to
react to illusions that aren't there. Then they stop.

I need it silent too. I prefer silence over everything. People with TVs running in the background
are a horror to my brain and seriously tamper with my awarenesslevel.

How is it regarding people? If you notice differences, have you ever tried yourself at cold reading?
Our... uhm... talent... makes it naturally easy to learn this,
but I'm unsure if it's still easy at a later age.
