The start screen does not bother me at all. Its just some of the UI was designed for touch based stuff when I don't have a touchscreen but I honestly don't even encounter that much anymore with all the updates microsoft has done.
There are still some settings you have to mess around with in the touch interface though.

My Win7 machine wouldn't access my external because it was formatted to XP.
Just so happens there was on old laptop in my office that was XP.
External HD-->laptop-->Thumb drive-->New External HD
Then I can reformat my old one...

Thats what I thought as well. When I first hooked it up to my Win7 machine, it gave me some song and dance about not being formatted and would I like to reformat the External...
Well, uh no.
So had to do this roundabout way. IIRC, Kate mentioned that IF I took the HD out of the enclosure and put it in the box, it would read it. Was too nervous to try.
