I got asked by my friend to coop a player suggestion for far down the road expansions for eve's little rts found on the planned features section in the patch notes area if you dont know what im talking about.
The Mobile Ground Control Ship (aka mgc's or "moba's" mobile bases)
Ship triats
A Landing and transforming ground command post base ship
Battlecruiser sized
Possible pocket carrier
Definete drone deployment for when on the ground
Light armaments
Heavy tankage
Landable
but thats the parameter i have to design by, except one more.
All races will have thier own version of the ship.
Sigh... that means my art is quadripled and it has to be tunned to match function with the current themes. Belive me this is actually harder than most people think.
Anyways Names, Stats, and of course LOOKS (yeah be very critical please and please do understand its WIP its not paid for and also im still an art student)
Gallente (colored pencil and its a cerodon version finished imo but needs critizing) Gallente Thor
Caldari (its messed up very badly on perpective but the basic concept is remaining the same unless somone suggests something better) Caldari Pelican?
Minmatar WORK IN PROGRESS (done entirely on the computer hence the different art style heavy WIP like stage 1 stuff needs the most critque please i only studied minmatar ships for a week before i popped this one out) Minmatar Liberator?
Amarr (in the design phase now playing around with a citadelish looking idea suggestions welcomed)

Yeah and i know about the trinity updates but serioulys thats hard to compete with, ill try to make any future designs though once its out and subjects are more readily studiable.

Gallente Design Notes Name: Thor, i got lazy and its probably wrong now that i remembered its norse, norse is usually minmatar. oh well, looking for another name but to lazy to wiki.
Overall Design Barrowed from the domi and obelisk which has alot of spacious room inside and added some agressive traits from the mymridon such as the weapon mounts. The drone bay is underneath the clamshell top, the troop bay is at the ships 'mouth'
Tranformations Rear engines point down, the 'fin' engines are already are. The gun mount entirely swivels out so they lay down flat and provide troops with cover fire near the ship. The center lump hinges back and become a control/command tower while the clamshell opens up revealing the drone bay, the clamshell tops also go down and seemingly provide the ship with more armor.

Unlike normal ships in EVE, aerodynamics are very important so all ships should be aerodynamic, at least the surfaces facing the direction they'll be flying. They should have landing bays of various sizes or configurations toward the back or at least facing away from the direction they fly

Edited by: Nova Fox on 02/12/2007 00:16:05 The ships will have engines that will swivel downwards while they are in atmo or already have engines pointed down such as the caldari one. any comments about the design itself though? they arent going to be very fast in atmo either. bays will be closed during atmo flight from what i understand and as they are currently designed most of the drone bays are shown closed cept the mimatar one.

I envision the Gallente ship very similar to what you have except with large wings on either side protruding from the front, and vehicle/drone bays on the sides.

I would put some kind of a physical shield on the front of the ship, and two sets of stubby wings along the bottom at the front and read of the ship. It would have bays lining the sides, front, and back for maximum tactical options but a potentially weak underside.

My vision for the Minmatar ship makes it look a lot faster and cooler, personally. Forward-swept wings at the rear of the drop ship, and a single massive bay on the front in accordance to their take-no-prisoners, balls-to-the-wall design philosophy. Engines at the top and back of the ship round it out.
Too bad I can't draw anything on a computer worth a damn.

Ill consider the caldari envisionment, im trying to get the feel for what other players belive what makes these ships belong to thier races.
As for the minmatar there seems to be two design classes going for them. Ill be sticking with the classic design mindset as it is by the co-op suggestion an older ship model modernized for pod pilots, as these ships hulls havent seen action since the great wars 100 years ago.

Fleshing out the mess known as the minmatar moba currently detailing the carrier portion's armor plates. ETA few minutes after i get back from a christmas party.

I'm an art student aswel, those drawings are awsome and you've managed to portray the unique design concepts of each race explicitly, also they have a big "coolness" factor.
As Tarminic's said considering their ships designed to move within a planets surface they should reflect the need for airodynamic lift, the Gallente one imo needs to show more evidence of this, maybe hint at the presence of wings or downward pointing thrusters?
What do you intend to do with the concepts once finalised? It would be cool you could find someone to render them in 3D but that would probably be difficult. Thinking about this theres alot of options for ground vechiles beside mobile landing ships, but as no one knows what CCP has planed for surface combat its imposible to guess (I dont think CCP even knows for sure yet).
If you want to team up on this I might have a go at working on afew of these aswel (with your permission ofc as this is your project). _______________________________________________

Im tasked with the art it seems so far of our two man group but im sure we are welcomed more ideas and features.
Remember this is the space to ground ship, and its size will rival battlecruisers i dont think anythign the size of a mountain is going to benifit from having any aerodynmaics unless the wingspan is purely massive. Also it will have to be able to carry a small army, this includes thier tanks and soldiers and ect ect. these take room so the designs must meed the needs of a cargo ship look, with a combat twist and the added mini-carrier function is stretching it though...
As for modeling help? youll need a texture artist thats for sure, i never done skins before. But i can provide multiple perpectives of the ships accurately hopefully, Im still learning how to accurately do this by instruction ive been pertty good with it so far but sometimes i just screw up bad...
Thanks for the praise and ill look on getting the amarrian built up first, but as it stands i gotta finish the minmatar one, its incomplete as it, as of this posting the carrier panels are about redone to look alot more defined and better ill work on the hb and runway next and anything attached to the carrier side before moving onto the troop side or bridge or engines.
If there is enough warrented demand i guess we can release the pdf 8 chapters short. Its already a 20 page suggestion with 100+ features so far... great undertaking program wise but a fan project none the less.
Ground units? So far we decided every side gets 3 tiers of soldiers, 2 tiers of light veichles, 2 teirs of armored and 1 apc for all sides then every side gets a special soldier and speical veichle. as for art for them i remember ccps concept artist putting a few units out in the past, such as the gallente marine which fitted our vision perfectly, armored soldier with a railgunihs weapon and 2 drones with weapons/sensors floating near him. There was also a Caldari? apc as well, damn thing is massive in comparison to the people it carried it was done for the TGC if i recalled right, but as far as ground units are concerned we havent done any art for them, im also in a pickle about the ground units as well due to the fact i have already made designs for myself that closly resemble some of the potential units to be used and i seriously dont want to give ccp those ideas. If your wondering what i mean look up the TNT-22s Armadon on my deviant if your curious, its almost minmatar, just doesnt have the rust or scrap heap look.

Another thing I'd look into was contrast. Contrast is, in my oppinion, half of making a drawing look good. Use it to define light and shadow at first, and if you like to work with it, it is vital for more difficult texture such as glass and metal.
Colouring under the final colour, defiging light and shapes, using a colour in the mood you wanna portray will give more mass to the object you are drawing aswell.
That beeing said, a sketch is never too simple for brainstorming and concept development, just wanted to give my 5. when it comes to the finnished and puplished drawings.
Heres a sketch I did on the Sansha Frig, so you can see where I am comming from when commenting on your work.

Updated the Minmatar Lander the carrier side is more defined and if you notice the blue juts ignore them for now solar panels are going to go there but they are one of the last things going to get added to the ship. Also added background.
Soon as I get my scanner up I'll show you guys what Im juggeling with amarr now and it doesnt look like anything the amarr currenly have so its a good start.. the other two ships the caldari and gallente took a month of thought on thier apperance verses thier function and style. The minmatar came surprisingly at the inspiration of the trinity pictures I have been seeing. anyways updated minmatar, the old wip moved to the second post, current wip in first post and this one.

I dont mind if you guys take my work and model it or redraw it. This stuff is by fans for fans and hopefully gets ccps attention to warrent thier use.
If you are going to model these ships I DO KNOW how important it is to have multiple profiles of the ships from various angels and sides and probably torn apart as well. So if you need anything like any angel of any ship here give me a holler ill try to scounge one up quickly. Anyways im calling it for the night no new stuff for 8 hours but im impressed on how far ive gotten with the minmatar one today got the center donish in a way, still got the troop bay side and decorations such as the solar sails, more glow to the lights and of course overall shading and highlighting along with more rust and guns.
Remember if you SEE ANYTHING THAT CAN BE IMPROVED please state so ill give it a shot.
oh yeah we made the final decision on the amarr I might scrap it together later tonight to give you guys a preview before i got into work on it.
I got eve mailed about the 'base modes' as it will be called. ill work on getting some sketches of those made as well soon as i get the last two ships done (and possibly redo the first two again on my computer)

Also if your wondering if there are any other ships being considered for design the answer is yes there is. But i dont really feel like taking on the daunting task of designing a teir 2 dreadnaught aka juggernaughts. Capturing the feel of eve online capitol ships of that size would be a great undertaking for me but also trying to figure out the difference betwenn three of them would be very hard imo as it currently stands save for the color you have a hard time determining the minmatar fromt he cadlari and save for the amarrs curved sides it too would be indistiguishable..

Not much to say, I like the Pelican as it fits well with the other Caldari ships.
When I look at the Gallente version the word Monolith pops into my head, doesnt quite seem to fit with me but thats all I can think of.

Yeah we're considering juggernaughts for orbital bombardments since the job will be to dangerous for current dreads to do (aka seige mode + 10 minutes getitng nailed by a cannon shooting shells the size of battleships though a dread = dead dread) although the dread can do it to assist the ground forces if its critical and the target has a beacon over it, they wouldnt however be able to hang in there long enough to destroy colony stuff.
If you want to design it go ahead. were entirely open to suggestions considering we only have 1 juggernaught on scratch right now.
Juggernaughts (no jokes please we heard them a million times already to the point they put it in the third movie of x-men)
Mothersized warships
Heavy tankage
Full rack of weapons
Seige mode transformation
1 per race.
Have fun considering them and no dont get into the nitty gritty juts and struts of these ships basic shapes will do fine.

Very nice sketch, the way you've caught the shiny hulls is impressive aswel. I think Nova's are more just concepts at the moment, when your brainstorming stuff down your just looking to get the basic shapes and forms, then at a later date you'd draw something like yours to express it in greater detail.
I cant get online right now but I'd be interested in hearing your ideas for implementing "planet fall" even if their unfinished, the Juggernaught idea sounds pretty sweet and the requiremnt of a locking becon goes some way to balancing it out. You could allow it to fire on planetary surfaces without the need of becon but with severely reduced accuracy, also have you thought about the possibilities of terraforming?
Heres a concept art I did a year ago for an Amarian station, though I now realise its design is better suited to a jovian station. It was just a concept sketch and I had intended to do a more detialed version one day: Jovian/Amarian Station concept _______________________________________________

Okay Im back and awake Ive decided to get the amarr concept out first before working on the minmatar more. The amarr one will just be a concept I'll tidy it up once I get some subjects looked at.

Oh none taken it just concept and they arent like my other works ive done for myself most of these where on the spot inspriations once they did hit. I wasnt going for pretty I was going for practicle, but if you can please expand on your opinion please.
About 'planet fall' Anyways yeah we got the works stellar vix mentioned about 12 chapters worth of ideas you think we'd missed terraforming?
ideas that where discussed so far
-atmo flight
-atmo flight properties, overall speed and gun nerfs, nerf the bigger ships vs the smaller ships, impliment gravity and impliment collision nerf (you ram in atmo your engines offline)
-plantary zones
-plantery development from terraforming to cities
-basic rts format, commanders get 'units' these act as infinite ammo in logical sense but they only fire when there is room to fufill and the reinforcment timer is up. extra help from above doesnt count twoards command max
-subcommanders suggested module which is antoher npc trainable in another command pod should add spice to any army so no generic army.
-command abilities, standard issue will be flares (giving those in the atmo flight something to shoot at), beacons (giving those in space somethign to shoot at and or land trops down to with), supply drop and fighter strike, other will be based on ship fittings and subcommander.
-system of going from planet to atmo has been finally agreed to be changing session methood to allow the rts a seperate enviroment from the orbial battles.
-Plantary Outpost/POS/Docking/gate method of interaction of colonized planet where the orbial battles will take place mostly.
-terraforming and living on solid liquid and gas planets
-colony ships (tech 2 freighters)
-Juggernaughts (teir 2 dreads)
-"Moba's" (Ground Control ship)
-Minmatar Civillian Salvage Ships (3 tech 1 and 3 tech 2)(ORE equvialent)
-System Pollution
-Colony Needs -Colony Wants -Colony Wastes (this is reason for system pollution) -Colony Export
-non racial Troop Pods for reinforcements
-non racial Troop Landers for reinforcment spawn point
-NPC market, as in shopping for people that have some degree of training to them surface only market feature
-Ship crews, once again npc surface market only.
-NPC trainer, surface s&i or surface military needed for colonists, ships crews, and unit construction
-bio reprocessors!!! -Major Mutations to redo your bloodline without having to start over, time sink and traning
-minor mutation to redistribute the inital 5 points bonus points
-chance based implant removal another surface only feature
-researching bpcs s&i surface only
-Trade goods manufacturing
-Citizenship to allow people like a amarrian traitor to join the minmatar governement, more role play feature.
-Embassies and embassy agents to always have improvements for even the worst hated of enemies for a price though.
-Espionage agents for those epic and deep and very scripted storyline missions lvl 4.5 difficulty
and the list goes on... the PDF isnt anywhere near done for first look from public but she working on it as much as possible.
