Has anyone else noticed the new star on the horizon? It's obviously larger and brighter than any other in the night sky and seems to be pulsing. You can find it by looking up from the level plane at about a 45 degree and spinning around slowly.
Is this a new role playing item?
Is it a Christmas add on as some have suggested?
Is it just there to annoy us with the question of why?

I assumed it was either the EVE gate or the next solar system over (so a closer star than the other stars I could see).

Looks to me like it is well above the plane of the stars connected by stargates.
I faced the camera at it and hopped in and out of map mode, it doesn't correspond to any stars on the map. -

We had a discussion on comms last night for about 10 minutes over ideas. There were some wild ideas. One of the coolest was that it was a portal bringing the Jovian race back to the galaxy.
The funny thing was that through the night almost every 10 minutes someone else got on asking the question again.

I have classic but can confirm that all the premium client users in my corp can see it as well.
I have located it from multiple characters across many systems and it appears to be constant from any system.
Everyone I have talked to has been able to see it. Turn your overlay on so you can easily see the plane and then look up from their 45 - 60 degrees. |

By all the semi-official accounts I've heard it's supposed to have been a comet but it's bugged and sits all stationary. It's being referred to as a North Star.
Much like Bookmarks were unintended btu ended up taking three years to fix if they call it North Star it becomes a feature, calling it a broken comet means they have to try and fix it.

All we need is the combined cooperation of a large number of Eve pilots scattered across each region of Eve. We then need to analyze the angle at which the star is seen and triangulate.
Shouldn't be too hard to do! Wait...this is the Eve community, who am I kidding?

I've just confirmed this is the beggining of an introdution to their next big expansion.
That star is a new worm hole that leads to another Galaxy. I wasn't able to get the whole scoop on if this the Milkyway or a new random Galaxy.
What I DO know is that it is a new server, and should help with the lag. You'll actually be able to fly through the wormhole and log into the other server. This way, the total number of people will be split between two seperate servers. Seems a bit like overkill, but trinity and ambulation are expected to double Eve's population in about 6 months.
They will be introdcucing 2 new "races" and the Jovians and this will play nicely into the 3 way factional warfare that this wormhole introduces.

I've been noticing it as well... and yeah, going in and out of the map shows there is no system in line with that star... looked from a few different systems in gallente space.
I suspect the "bugged commet"-theory, but I'm hoping for the "scientist tripping over powercord for ginormous bomb"-theory.

I've done some exploring using the 3D-map from some different systems and it seems to me like it's located somewhere above Providence, far from any systems. It seems to be located on a line from Amarr to Murzi but if you go to Murzi the direction seems to be further out into deep space. Could someone else try to confirm or deny this?
Also, do I get a cookie now?

Oh, I think that would be decided very quickly.
Senario 1. Eve invades Wow.
As the population of 34000 eve players begins to pass through the server gate into the Wow verse the shard is saturated and crashes. The gate searches for and finds another shard to attach too and that shard is saturated and crashes. This continues until all Wow verse shards are saturated and crashes.
Senario 2 Wow invades Eve. All the lvl 500 players from wow decide to invade EVE and because they can own 20000 newbs by themself they come in alone one at a time. They travel around the 0.0 systems some until they hit a gate camp where they are bubbled, jammed and destroyed in a matter of 30 seconds after decloack. As they are podded back to the oblivian of the Wow Verse now at lvl 3 because they didn't insure their clone they scream out "Come fight me like a man in WOW you NEWB!" No, here's what happens:
EVE invades WOW. EVE employs orbital bombardment. WoW becomes a postapocalyptic fantasy MMO in the wastelands left by the bombardment. ____________________________________ Caldari by birth, Minmatar by citizenship.

In all honesty "IF" it is a new feature then C.C.P. will keep it hush hush. Or it could be a graphics bug i.e. like the station bug where you saw a dot on the bottom of the ship.
I see itt on the old client also. Its pretty cool looking but I have a few ideas myself. Would be cool to see comets in game like C.C.P. has stated before about 1 or 2 years ago when they were talking about mining from comets.
But all in all what ever it may be there is no dout it is there and until we get a confirmation from C.C.P. all we can do is speculate. Once you get this Robotech thing in your blood its there to stay... |

It's a white hole.
That's my theory.
White Hole's are in theory the opposite of black holes they spew matter into the universe rather than sucking it out. To date no white holes have been found but for many years Black Holes were thought to be science fiction.
Some have speculated that the reason we currently do not see white holes is because this universe is one great white hole, that the big bang was a white hole.
Oh well enough astronomy.
PS: The problem with binary star systems is that the stars are not always close to one another, they can be as close as Sol is to Mercury or as far away as several light years.....
Thoughts expressed are mine and mine alone. They do not necessarily reflect my alliances thoughts. |

It is a strange things.
1) You can see it from many places: Empire as well as 0.0
2) It doesn't change the brightness regardless your own position.
3) It is certainly not a point light source but has clearly visible some size.
4) We don't see a diffuse light with fuzzy borders but something with more or less precise 'borders', a sharp falloff in light intensity.
5) The light appears to be 'twinkling', it is not constant around the edges.
6) The light distribution 'inside' the object seems to be more or less constant. No highlight in the middle.
A: It is okay to conclude from 2) that then this object, if it is some real object and not just some imagination, is incredibly far away. If it is not far away, the change in your own position should result in a change in the objects brightness.
B: Assumed that previous point is valid and with 3) we can conclude that this object is already unbelievable huge. Since it is far away and if it would be only a 'small' object like any other star we would see only a point light source. But because we see an extended light source it needs to have a huge size.
C: From 4) we can conclude that it is not a nebula. And with 5) we can reason that it is also not a (normal) galaxy.
D: Because the object is that huge and because 5) we can also reason that the object itself is not twinkling - because the matter in the normal universe cannot transmit information faster than light. Therefore the space between the object and the observers needs to distort the look resulting in the twinkling. Like the atmosphere of the earth causes stars to twinkle for earth-bound observers.
Now with (D) we could argue that the object itself doesn't need to be huge, if something in between just magnifies the object like those einstein-rings around very distance galaxies. Then (C) would become an invalid reasoning. In either way (C) valid or invalid, we come to the valid deduction that this object (if it is indeed some object) is very far away and that something distorts our vision of this object.

EVE backstory tells us all "inhabited systems" are binary star systems, due to some gravitational thingamajing the stargates need to properly function. EVE scientific article linkage So, after sooooooo much time, they FINALLY made that second star in the system visible.
Of course, it's just fluff, but... nice fluff

it could be the event horizon of a supernova caused by the new jovian superweapon which has then caused a stable dimensional rift in space allowing a stable portal for the rogue drones to traverse to the eve universe from their native plane of existence.
I foresee a jove driven rogue drone invasion which causes the uneasy peace between the empire factions to fall apart hailing the breakout of fullscale factional warfare in the future

It definitely isn't EVE gate, as it is visible from every system (that i've been to anyway) it has to be something from outside our galaxy Judging by it's brightness and size i can only imagine it is possibly a star going nova (a long time ago)

More to the point, it seems to me to be in the wrong direction for the EVE gate - about 90 degrees off from my part of space.

Binary pairs can be significant distances apart from each other and still be considered binary.
The largest across system warp I've ever done (between gates at least, has been 150AU roughly. Its estimated that our own real life solar system is about 80 AU across (to an average of pluto's orbit). The Ort Cloud is somewhere between 50 to 150 AU out from the Sun.
A binary star can be as close as 11AU from each other, and even as far as .15 Light Years, depending on how you define it.
Read about the Alpha Centauri Cluster of stars. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpha_Centauri
If the written history is taken seriously, then yeah, this is most likely the binary pair of the main star in each system in eve.
That being said, I wish we could prove a consistent position in the sky that suggests something else is going on... something more interesting then just the physics of jumpgates ;)

I'm in the far North-North-East of the map, system ETXT to be exact. From my vantage, there are NO stars in line with it, at least within the normal Eve galaxy.
It does, however, do a very good job of aligning to the very last Jove star. Like, an incredibly perfect alignment.
If anyone wants to start triangulating, you can draw a line between the northern-most Jove star and ETXT.

If that's a star going supernova, lets say it's one billion lightyears from EVE...that means the star died a billion years ago and the light is just now reaching our place in the universe. Even getting there now in FTL ships would mean that whatever caused the event is so far back in history that it's practically irrelevant now.
Sorry.

It can't be a "2nd Star" as it is present in every system. A star in any single system would be obvious as you approach that system and blatant when you are in the system in question.
If it's a glitch why go through the extra effort to put it in line with the Jove systems, obviously out and away from anything else and pulsing/twinkling. It's got to be coded and therefor put there for a reason. -

The star is both obvious and blatant. All systems in eve are binary systems according to the prime fiction, so it makes sense.

From Citadel around Paara, it looks to be southwest (more west than south), not north. In Paara, you can already see the binary star off toward the Muvolailen gate and this new thing in the sky is more or less in the opposite direction from it.

I'd wager it is foreshadowing some kind of 'GM event' (as we called them in EQ) signaling the opening of Jovian space and the return of the Jove Empire. I think most people just think of it as a new whacky dot that means nothing as EVE isn't known for having GM events, but they're quite common in other MMO's.
Did you really think the significant portion of space where Jove is would be closed forever? Seems kind of a waste to me. My guess is they had just implemented the new Jovian ships with Trinity graphics and were waiting until now to wow us all with a massive storyline event.

I have been watching this thread to see if anyone could actually guess what the bright star is. So far no one has gotten it. I will explain exactly what it is.
You see, lately the number of whine threads on this forum has increased greatly. CCP has determined a maximum number of whine threads to be allowed. This number will never be known to any players until it is too late.
This is where the "bright star" comes in. This star is actually a gate. There is not one total, but one in every system. Once the maximum number of whine threads has been reached, CCP will close down the forums and jump through these gates in every system which holds a player. They will be piloting Jovian ships. They will begin to pop and pod everyone in space. The server will stay up until and they will continue to accept new subscriptions, but if you log in and enter space you will be sent to your demise immediately. It is at this time that there will be only one thing to whine about, but no one will hear it.

it could also be a star thats gone supernova and will create the new region we are hearing about ? thats what i think anyway :p
wiki says - On average, a supernova occurs about once every 50 years in a galaxy the size of the Milky Way and play a significant role in enriching the interstellar medium with heavy elements. Furthermore, the expanding shock waves from supernova explosions can trigger the formation of new stars.

Well seeing as a)there's no comment from CCP, and b) it's going to be very annoying to see it every system and c)we just had a patch with 100+ bugs in it, I shall need to petition this every system I see it.
I suggest everyone does the same, as I didn't see it mentioned in either the patch notes or bug notes and CCP needs to clearly understand this obvious error.

As they are podded back to the oblivian of the Wow Verse now at lvl 3 because they didn't insure their clone they scream out "Come fight me like a man in WOW you NEWB!" Where upon Senario 1 takes effect.
No, here's what happens:
EVE invades WOW. EVE employs orbital bombardment. WoW becomes a postapocalyptic fantasy MMO in the wastelands left by the bombardment.

I can confirm that the star or bright light can not be seen in the New Eden system.
So its either the New Eden worm hole put in by the Dev's because its required.
OR
Its something fun for Christmas. Anyway, just thought I'd all let you know the star cant be seen in New Eden which suggests to me that the light we can all see is the Wormhole.

This star was on Sisi weeks ago.. there I tryed to select it/warp to it.. but same as here on TQ.. nothing works on it.
From forge and genesis triangulated it looks like it's out of the eve-universe.. somewhere above/below great wildlands/curse/scalding pass.. whatever that means.
And it's nature.. well, as I don't think this kind of feature comes in by defect of code, it surely is something wanted from ccp and as we're near christmas, it sure has something to do with it.. especially as last christmas we got the stick - not like christmas before that, where we had the snowball launchers.. hehe.
However, I like it very much.. it's there.. it's friendly twinkeling and everybody and his dog is wondering about it and makes assumptions. This is neat.

I doubt that anyone has not noticed this object.
It is most emphatically not the EVE Gate, because the EVE Gate would appear below the horizon of most systems, not above it.
I personally rather quickly ruled out the possibility of it being anything within the galaxy at all because it appears identically in every system -- the same size in the same direction, which suggests that it is not only quite far away, but also gigantic. Galaxy-sized, even.
Actually, it reminds me of the galaxy-sized gas comet that we saw shoot through a galaxy cluster at 1000km/s last year. It was an excited body of gas five million light-years long behaving like a comet. Certainly boggling. __________________________________________________ 'The illiterate of this century are not those who cannot read and write; but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.' |

I think we can pretty much ignore location and any kind of distance to this "star", except for maybe a rough average direction it is pointing to. The holiday stories are about people following it and finding a very old, uncharted gate. I think that's enough hints about this star, but what lies behind that gate?

Perhaps, it signs the way for a special event taking place in a distant land on the 25th December.
Perhaps if there were three wise men they could find the way and bring gifts.
Perhaps.
But this is EVE-Online, so the chances of getting 3 wise men is pretty slim. We could send 3 whiners though and they would still sound foreign with their talk of 'Yo H3r0d d00d, undockz'n' fight like a man - gunna WTFBBQPWNZ yer@55!!! D'eres like only 3 of us - honest'
And the history books would not tell of the infamous king-gank when the other 2000 wise men hidden next door rushed him.

Well, the stars you normally see in-game are mainly your local stars (seamless map for the win), and you can actually navigate by them, kind of.
While in The Forge, I noticed that the star was in a south-west direction on the mapbrowser. Therefore, if this is physically mapped in space, it should vary its direction, based on where you are lookit at it from.
Four hours of warping around to the four corners of the galaxy later (I was bored, and doing other stuff so just AP'd around Hisec), and no matter where you are, its the exact same direction.
This means either theres one for each system, or the 'star' is very very far outside the galaxy. _____

Well, regardless of its origional intent, this is a great opportunity for CCP to add some sweet event/exploration content. For example, it'd be cool if it was a comet that moved thru systems at the rate of 2-3 days per system, and was mine-able for gas or something.
Or it could be the an invasion, or provide some sort of Weather effect like system-wide shield damage or blanket jamming strength. The possiblities are there.
I'd just like it to be a resurgance of the Event program: its dissapointing that even new content is quickly posted and turned into just another list of facts.

I can confirm it is not a static background..
You ever jumped through a portal in Jita while having heavy lag? You'd notice that the local game background is loaded before everything else is loaded.. stuff like planets and stargates takes time.. This bright star magically re-appeared when the other planets and gates and stations loaded.. there must be something to it.

Won't read 11 pages atm, but here's some of my ponderings:
The star appeared in all systems at once, so it can't be a brief or sudden event as the light would take thousands of years to reach the whole of EVE. This assumes physics wasn't ignored _completely_ though.
So we're dealing with a phenomena that is either _close_ or has _persisted for a long time_.

Out galaxy, which we call "The milky way", has billions of stars of wich alot are binary/trinary stars of millions of different sizes. In fact the closest star system to our own is a trinary system if I remember correctly. Binary stars
Next to that there are billions, if not trillions, of other galaxies... wich on their turn also orbit/move/collide with each other... It's beyond your imagination.
And then my on topic contribution, I think the most reasonable explenation at this time would be either of these, sorted on how likely it is. - Second star of the star system, as stated it is said the gates only work in binary systems deu to reason, go look em up. - Other backstory event - Christmas event - Comet (wait... what?) - A second wormhole/gate (this would be awesome)

You only get a handful of shots with the things but they're great at busting shields or shredding hulls (depending on the type used)

It is very unlikely to be the second star of the binary system.
Even if we assume that each second star in the binary system has the same size and colour - which would be really amazing since the main stars vary so much in color and size - even then it wouldn't make sense.
I jumped to a 160 AU system and crossed it from one edge to the other. There was no visible parallax of this new 'star'. A quick calculation reveals that (assuming that I can see a parallax of 1¦) the second star cannot be closer than 10.000 AU. The average binary star system are much much smaller. Because of those reasons it is very unlikely that this new star is the second star in the binary system.

Here is a thought about the binary star question...
That point of light currently does represent the "sister sun" in our systems, though at this point, it is just a static graphic in space. The real treat will come in when they make these "sister suns" active, allowing us to warp to them and their accompanying planets, moons, and asteroid belts.
Meaning more worlds to conquer, more space to dominate and some such. _________

You do realise that most ships can only cross a couple hundred AU per leap on a full capacitor? It would take quite a while to cross the massive distance that star would be at. Lets say the binary partner is 0.1 Light Year away (not unreasonable, if it isn't influencing the system you're in to much). That would still be around 6300 AU distance. Most ships can cross 180-200 AU tops per jump, imagine doing 30 odd warps while waiting for full cap each time.

Well I did say it was an idea.
But then, lets build on your distances... "Binary Jump Gates" which are not open yet. These gates would be placed in close obit around each of the accompanying twin stars in these binary systems.
These "inner" systems would be only accessible through the primary their partner.
Oh what the hell am I on... It's probably only a X-mas event thingie... never mind. _________

i have noticed i cant line anything up with it (in verge vendor) i cant warp to planet, moon, station, gate, it seem to be in a point where nothing lines up with it, so i cant see it being any system on the jump gates.

Edited by: Little Fistter on 16/12/2007 18:22:45 We have narrowed it down to several possibilities:
1. Its a pile of Vodka bottles left over from an ancient human ritual called "Fanfest."
2. Its the Dalek invasion fleet. Or Borg. No, its the Death Star!
3. Its Pluto. Dejected and outcast from the Solar System, it has been seeking a new home.
4. Its Santa's Sleigh, but Rudolph's been taking steroids.
5. Its CCP's stock price... watch it rise!
6. Its a lycanthrope moon from the distant and mystical "White Wolf World."
7. Its lights from CCP headquarters where they have been working night and day to NERF the next thing you like about Eve.

Ok,
Can I ask a question?
I have been reading through this thread, and people are saying "It's in the north, No, the West, No South, No East, NO-U!"
But how the heck can you really tell anyway? I mean, it's not like the solar system map (or star map, for that matter) has a "compass rose" printed on it. There just isn't any reference point that I am aware of to tell what your ship's orientation is compared to the galaxy center.
How the heck do we tell?

The bright star in the East was Sirius, the three "wise men" are the stars in Orion's belt, and on Dec 24th all four stars are in alignment. If you consider the three stars in Orion to be "following" Sirius you find that they all heading to the point on the horizon where the sun rises on Dec 25th. Some people like to interpret this as simply a quirk of celestial mechanics, once useful to primitive peoples as an indication that the days will now start to get longer again and it will soon be warm enough to plant seeds.
On the other hand, in a game with non-secular names such as "Eve" and "Trinity", divine-interventionists are sure to abound.

The bible doesn't mention how many "wise men" there were, nor is the 24th mentioned in the new testament.
Apart from all that, fixed stars (such as Orion's belt and Sirius) don't move around in relation to each other (that's why they are called fixed stars), at least not over the period of a year, so I'm not sure what you mean by "on Dec 24th all four stars are in alignment"
