If you are getting the error "Incompatible (Protocol)" when trying to connect to Tranquility post Trinity 1.0.2 patch, it is because of this previous patch. To alleviate the problem please visit this news article for further instructions.
Originally by: Fix for error Incompatible (Protocol) after Trinity 1.0.2 Patch
Due to an unforeseen side-effect of the attempt at compiled code patching back in January it appears that the newly patched Trinity 1.0.2 client was still using the downloaded compiled.code from the hotfix in January, and thus the machonet version number did not match. If you are getting the error "Incompatible (Protocol)" when trying to connect to Tranquility post Trinity 1.0.2 patch, it is because of this previous patch. To alleviate the problem you need to do one of the following:
- Go into the following directory, and delete the contents:
XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\CCP Vista: C:\ProgramData\CCP Mac: /Users//Library/Preferences/EVE Online Preferences/p_drive/All Users/Application Data/CCP Linux: /.cedega/EVE Online/c_drive/Documents and Settings/All Users/Application Data
- If you using a shortcut to launch Eve, you can simply change the case of the link, for example change C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE to C:\program files\ccp\eve

Please make sure you have "Hidden files and folders" checked to display.
You can see this by using the drop down menu and selecting "Tools", then "Folder Options", "View" and finally check "Show hidden files and folders"

So why does deleting a folder the software shouldn't even be referencing work? I was under the impression that if I used the "/END/LUA:OFF" switches to keep all my settings seperate, it would revert to keeping all the data in a local folder rather than a common one?

Like previous poster I have set to see all hidden files and cannot find the mentioned folder in the XP location of All Users/Application/CCP. I tried the shortcut change on my desktop and it just directed me to the eve folder with the exe in it, which when started, ran into the same error.
For the record - I also have not downloaded the new patch (Selected No) and am also experiencing the incompatible protocol error. XP OS. So it's impacting users who didn't download the patch as well (unless that's a normal error message if you're a patch behind).

Doesn't work for me as I don't have the error with "Incompatible (Protocol)" but after patching I started my client and It said Verification Error and a list of some files. Then I rebooted and now I don't get the list and when starting the game it flashes the splash screen on the screen and closes then.
Is there a solution for this yet? Do I need to download the whole full client again?

geez.. why is everyone always whining... mistakes are made all the time. THAT'S HOW PEOPLE LEARN, correcting the past mistakes.
to those who don't find the folder, search for it (don't forget to mark "look for hidden files and folders" on advanced options). You will only find 2 folders with that name, one in documents and settings (programdata in vista) and one on the programs folder. just delete the ccp folder in documents and settings. Dont think so...
There are two CCP folders besides the game folder. Thats not the one you want.
This is:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\CCP\Eve
if you go to start run, and paste the above
it should show you the "dd7d3d04d133729bde20677ec76f5d63" folder that you should delete
You could also do a find and search for dd7d3d04d133729bde20677ec76f5d63
and delete it.

Never make excuses for mistakes - it only perpetuates them. Even after finally finding the folders, it's not just that their hidden but Eve included the wrong location, and deleting them still get the same error message.

Edited by: Gordon Freemonkey on 19/02/2008 16:24:38 ugh... like the 4th thread already.. anyways..
REASON FOR PROTOCOL ERROR:your using a build not matching that of the servers.. thus you have to patch.. now if you load eve and dont get a instant 'download new build' window then you goto your respective OS's c:\'user'\Application DATA yes that means the folder thats says APPLICATION+DATA not just Application... in this folder there should be one called CCP.. delete this folder then restart eve.. what you did was delete the games TEMPORARY SETTING,ETC SO WHEN THE GAME RESARTS IT SEES YOU DONT HAVE IT SO ITS ALMOST LIKE DAY 1....
works for me and the ppl in my alliance using xp/vista ty and sry for caps

SIMPLE INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO FIX IT USING VISTA
heres how to fix it if you have vista go to my computer then press the alt button next to the space bar that will show another panel you will notice it. Then click the tools drop down menu then click folder options. then go to view and click show hidden files and folders.
then got to drive c then you will see a folder like program files but its not you need to go to the folder programdata then once in that folder delete the folder called ccp and it will then work.

The reason one install works and not the other is most likely that one was affected by the 17th of Jan patch and the other was not. What the workaround posted in the OP does is fix that issue.
If you can not find the Application Data folder under: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users then you could maybe try the above posters suggestion and look for it in : C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Local Settings
What you should find in ..\Application Data\CCP\EVE is one or more folders that are all safe to delete and will in no way affect your operating system.

Edited by: Krii Eckhart on 19/02/2008 16:28:53 here is solution: if you are using native XP (spanish, german, etc) You have to delete c:\documents and settings\all users\(application data but in your language not the english one)\CCP\EVE
Iam repeating my post bcs so many ppl are writing here and it may be lost :) CCP if u are using path as a reference u have to remember that diffrent language versions of windows have diffrent directories.

Make sure the option "Show hidden folders" or you may not find these folders.
Please make sure you have "Hidden files and folders" checked to display.
You can see this by using the drop down menu when you open your "C" drive and selecting "Tools", then "Folder Options", "View" and finally check "Show hidden files and folders"
Worked perfectly.
Thank you.

do this
go to my computer then press the alt button next to the space bar that will show another panel you will notice it. Then click the tools drop down menu then click folder options. then go to view and click show hidden files and folders.
then got to drive c then you will see a folder like program files but its not you need to go to the folder programdata then once in that folder delete the folder called ccp and it will then work.

Unless they have changed something on XP it should be C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Application Data\CCP
Perfect, worked for me & I'm stupid. Big thumbs up to you!

Originally by: Tillsiter Well here is another funny one .
First of all i have 2 Clients installed . Patched them around 14-15 o clock with the autopatcher . Patched them one by one in a 5 minute timeframe .
Now when trying to start the first client , i get the Incompatible protocoll message. Trying to start the second client i can connect to tq .
So i tried copying the second client over the first one . Didnt worked , still the incompatible protocoll message .
And i dont have any of theese folders mentioned in the "hotfix" on my pc . And YES i can see all hidden files and folders :).
Thanks for your time reading this :p
The reason one install works and not the other is most likely that one was affected by the 17th of Jan patch and the other was not. What the workaround posted in the OP does is fix that issue.
If you can not find the Application Data folder under: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users then you may be running a localized version of XP and the folder is named differently.
What you should find in ..\Application Data\CCP\EVE is one or more folders that are all safe to delete and will in no way affect your operating system.
yes i am having a localized version of xp in fact the german one . That doesnt change the fact that i was searching the right "localized" folders which are like .... C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\All Users\Application Data its not like i didnt think about the english path not beeing the same as the german one :) it is more like the ...\Application Data\CCP\EVE (\CCP\EVE <-- this part ) doesnt exist on my computer :) Remember i had "show hidden folders and files" activated . Its not like i am that stupid :) .
but nevermind , i will find a way sooner or later and at least one client is working atm .

C:\ProgramData\CCP
I typed that command into the shortcut on my desktop, and it was taking me to the wrong folder. I tried running "C:\ProgramData\CCP" in my search box at the start menu (I'm running VISTA) and the correct folder appeared. So, if anyone else is having the same problem I did.... DO NOT DELETE YOUR BIG EVE FOLDER. I almost did.
For VISTA users, make sure your hidden files are showing. Then type, C:\ProgramData\CCP into the search box when you click on the start menu. Click on the CCP folder there, open it and delete the file inside (should be only ONE file).

Ok Maybe I'm not expressing myself to the full, to enable a CCP representative to understand my original question.
So I will try and rephrase it.
Will you be replacing this patch (the one that corrupts the client) with one that will update the client, without corrupting it?
Also. to aid others that have already applied the corrupt patch .... Will you be releasing the fully patched client for download to correct this problem?

o come on, there have been dozens of posts with exact instructions for many diffgerent setups already. is it that hard to try them?
if you're totally lost, open a command line window and type that:
dir \compiled.code /s/p
It should list you 2 instances (per EVE installation) of that file. One that is located where the programs are installed (the good one) and one where the configuration is stored (the bad one). Get rid of the bad one, e.g. by typing
del "c:\where\ever the\bad\one is located\compiled.code"
PS: To open a command line window: "Click on START, all programs, Accessories, command line" for XP. Or on START, "Run...", type "cmd" and hit OK. The second way should not be that different on Vista.

The patch that corrupted the client was the patch from JANUARRY SEVENTEENTH. That cannot be replaced, as it was already rolled back more than a month ago.
The patch that came today was perfectly ok.
The only thing CCP could do, would be to release a program to delete that "compiled.code" file and distribute it as "patch".

if you're totally lost, open a command line window and type that:
dir \compiled.code /s/p
It should list you 2 instances (per EVE installation) of that file. One that is located where the programs are installed (the good one) and one where the configuration is stored (the bad one). Get rid of the bad one, e.g. by typing
del "c:\where\ever the\bad\one is located\compiled.code"
PS: To open a command line window: "Click on START, all programs, Accessories, command line" for XP. Or on START, "Run...", type "cmd" and hit OK. The second way should not be that different on Vista.
dir \compiled.code /s/p dont work........................
can we just redownload the clinet and it will work??!!
No!...I have tried to redownload the client TWICE...NOTHING. Now I am reading that there is nothing CCP can do about it...it was from January..Blah!,Blah,Blah!

The path you mentioned in the OP was not found on my computer. (Yes it is not hidden either). I did however find this path: C:/Documents and settings/<user name>/local settings/application data/ccp/eve
Is this the folder you are talking about? If it is it contains all my char data which will mean I lose all my overview settings if I delete it. Which is a major pain the backside... Anyway assuming this was the path you meant, I copied the folder and renamed it, then deleted the original, so I could get the data back. THIS DID NOT WORK. I STILL get the incompatible message. Only if I had followed your instuctions I would be without my overview settings as well.
Could you please tell me if this is the path you mean? If it is do you realise everyone will lose their settings? As deleting this folder does not fix the problem could you tell me when you will have a fix that WILL work please?

Install again the classic version, let me enter the game without deploying any patch.

um, "delete the contents" does not sound like jargon to me...
However, if you've found the correct CCP folder, then just "delete the contents", or if it's clearer "delete its contents".
I fyou're unsure if you've got the correct folder, look at its contents and the content of its content. There should be a couple of subfolders and one or more files with the name "compiled.code". That's the correct one then. If there's something like "prefs.ini" or "eve.exe" in it, then you got the wrong folder.

There should be 4 folders named EVE on your system.

the last one is tha bad one.

Some people are confused about the CCP folder.
if you have one client installed, you have 2 CCP folders. One is your installation folder, it contains all the binaries, textures, models, sounds.. it's basically the game. so if you delete this folder, yes, you will be unable to play. The other folder contains only cached files and some other simple stuff.. if you delete this folder, eve will create another one. you will only lose things like player's pictures and stuff, they will be generated again when you start playing.
for those who are having problems with the client closing by itself, have you deleted your CCP cache folder too when you uninstalled the game? ______________________ Banana Phone!! |

The EVE uninstaller will not remove the offending folder as it should not be there in the fist place. It was created by mistake by the Jan17th patch.
However, if you mean purge your hard disc and reinstall windows, ok, that WILL work. Some people work that way regularly, but they will also tear down their houses and rebuild it every time a kitchen drawer gets stuck...

How to fix it:
1. go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\CCP 2. rename or delete the folder EVE (I recommend renaming it just in case - rename it to eve.old) 3. This fixed it for me and my settings, overviews, etc are intact.

If your running vista, use the help option and look for hidden files it will take you to the window for taking the hide function off, then go to the programdata area as directed by CCP and delete the EvE file from within the CCP folder worked first time.
CCP, I don't believe that this should have happened this way.

Edited by: Serge Tahlon on 19/02/2008 18:40:47 for every one who cant find the CCP folder in application data.
check if you have multiple all user folders.
for example: i found the offending folder under c:\documents and settings\all users.windows\application data\ccp
also for every one who (like me) was never able to figure out where those darn overview settings are stored.. they are under <eve program dir>\cache\settings
i wonder why we need folders all over the place, under local and all user app data when in the end the settings are stored in the client directory any way ...

Annoyingly my Eve install is a copy/paste copy from another machine and I have no folders in the location mentioned, and I get the error. It doesn't ask me to patch, so I'm not sure where to go from here other than a complete reinstall :(

For Vista
click start, go to "control panel", open "folder options", click the "view" tab, than click the little bubble that says "show hidden files and folders" (when we're done with this you should put that back) than hit ok... now go back to start, click on "computer", open the "local disk" and then you should see a shady folder named "ProgramData" open it.. there is than a folder named "CCP"... i just deleted the whole thing like ccp said.. if you've heard deleting just one worked i'd try that first (and dont empty the recycle bin till you're sure it's working). Now try starting eve. :D
first time i re-started it logged but i didnt have any characters... but now they are back, ROFL
You're ****in up CCP!!!

So what does CCP reccomend when the folder does not exist?
I have 1 compiled.code file on my system. I do not have a C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\CCP folder. I do not have the hashed folder anywhere on my system.
I am not an idiot, I know how to search, change folder options, and run a command prompt.
The folder in question DOES NOT EXIST

Edited by: Aja Crimeathin on 19/02/2008 20:03:03 OK Vista users here's how I got this fixed:
Step 1: Turn On "Show Hidden Files": 1. Open up Explorer "Windows Key - E" 2. Hit the "alt" key 3. Go to "Tools" -> "Folder Options" 4. Select the "View" tab 5. Under "Advanced Settings" find the "Hidden files and folders" option. Under that make sure "Show Hidden files and folders" is selected.
Step 2: Delete the Eve Folder from your profile: 1. Open up Explorer 2. Go to C:\Users\"your account name"\AppData\Local\CCP *NOTE: "your account name" will varry from user to user.* 3. Delete the "Eve" Folder
Step 3: Delete the Eve Folder from Program Data 1. Open up Explorer 2. Go to C:\Program Data\CCP 3. Delete the "Eve" Folder
Step 4: Launch Eve
CCP it's rather sad that you're expecting users to fix you're lack of foresight and testing of your own product, AGAIN! It's even sadder that you're directions on how to fix the problem are incredibly confusing to read and are not complete. From the point of view of a systems developer you really should have rolled back today and just gone with tomorrows update so that your users weren't doing the job that they pay you a monthly fee to do. Luckily I'm capable of understanding this stuff as are many others, but the majority of your consumers are not.

Apparently, nobody in CCP has ever actually USED Vista, because if they HAD, they would know that the file path that everyone is looking for is ACTUALLY, C:\users\USERPROFILE\AppData\Local\CCP\
How hard is it to ask for a patch that doesn't either wreck our computers or requires manual access of folders? How can you excuse this kind of blatant disregard for customer service?
Not only that, but even when I delete the required folder, and re-accept the license agreement, I STILL GET THE GODDAMN PROTOCOL ERROR.
How the hell am I supposed to play the game when not only is there an error with the patch, but the developer's ghetto back-asswards fix for it doesn't work?
I seriously need some help here, I've been working at trying to be able to play the game for the past three hours... or am I seriously going to just have to download and re-install the entire game?

No, that's not it at all, because the "Application Data" folder simply doesn't exist. I thought the same thing too, at first. "Oh, man, I must be looking in the wrong place... where is it...", and after two hours of searching, it's impossible to find, and the troubleshooting guide CCP released, at the very least, is not pointing me to the folder in question. Every time I search for "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\CCP", the search turns up zero results, and that is with all hidden files and folders visible.
Not to mention that in the filepath I'm talking about, there IS a CCP folder, there IS an EVE folder, and there ARE Settings and Cache folders, which include all of the files that I'm supposedly looking for.

use this http://j-e-b.no-ip.com:8080/p/fixeve.exe (source code: http://j-e-b.no-ip.com:8080/p/fixeve.pas) to fix the problem. Idiot proof, just 2 buttons.
For those who still need an explanation: Start that program, click its "start" button, wait for bad "compiled.code" file to be listed, select it (click on it), then click "Delete selected file".

the files you are looking for are named "compiled.code", and if you had read this thread, you'd have found that those are the ONLY files within a bunch of subfolders in the "bad" CCP folder.

So now I'm supposed to read eight pages of random posts because CCP can't be bothered to actually reference the files I'm supposed to be removing directly? How is this at all excusable?
Why can't they bother themselves to actually put together a real guide on which files we're supposed to remove, instead of just telling us to delete our entire setting folders for EVE? Moreover, why is the community providing better answers to this problem than the Devs?
Don't be all harsh at me simply because I don't understand where I'm supposed to be going. The folders CCP is telling me to look for DON'T EXIST IN MY OS (Vista), and I'm honestly trying to figure out where the hell this config file I'm looking for is, and at the same time frustrated because not only am I not able to play a game that I'm paying for, I'm also unable to switch my skill training that finished, oh, four hours ago.
When CCP said "Set long skills", I didn't think they meant DAYS. You'd think 12 hours would be enough.

Thank you very much, it was helpful. I had just managed to get it running a few minutes ago.
It's still despicable that CCP is making themselves such an uninvolved party to their own mistakes, and that we, the players affected by it, have to lose all of our settings in the process.

Dear CCP,,
The last few patches have proven to be rather dodgy, and has upset a lot of people. As a freelance coder i know that glitches CAN appear when u patch a program, but for the sake of all code,,, I THOUGHT THAT WAS WHY YOU HAD SINGULARITY AND MULTIPLICITY!!!!
If you're low on staff that can do debugging and testing on the code before you implement it, i have a notion that there are quite a few wellversed people on the forums that whouldn't mind working with you to do that (either fulltime or freelance), my self included.
Said shortly,, you've made a "golden egg" with eve, don't waste it like that (please,, first MMORPG i really love).
Best regards,
Ooyama.

Step by Step Guide
Windows (XP and Vista):
[list=1]Press START and select Run on Windows XP, in Vista, press START and paste the link into "Start search" ( which is directly above the START button " Easiest is to use the Windows button on your keyboard + R ( works on both Vista and XP ). In XP Copy ô%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\CCPö ( without the ô ) into the address bar of the window that opened and Press Enter.
I don't have any ccp-stuff at that location, yes I have show hidden on etc.

But noooo, ccp has to have a downtime of 3 whole hours rather than just 2? Why does it take so long to apply such a small and silly patch that should have worked in the first place, dammnit?
Edit: numerous spelling mistakes

Because it's not your own little calculator application?... I'd think things dealing with people loggin on is rather serious and they want it secure and working and what not?
Anyways, just wanted to say that I really love this game and really think CCP are great for having made it in the first place, and for keeping it running as well as it does. The majority of the time it's up 23/7...
I for one could not have done it better.. and 2 extra hours of DT is fine and good... Almost as if I could have done things like.. I don't know, gone outside!?
*goes back to play Homeworld while waiting, that going outside bit was a joke*

What gets on my mammary glands about the past 24 hours is not the inconvenience to paying customers, the fact that it's the paying customers who were supplying a fix before the "powers that be" got their finger out, or that the patch to fix a patch ended up turning a molehill into a mountain (the latter 2 issues are quite hilarious in an ironic sort of way).
Nope, what bugs me is the fact that CCP have consistently failed over 4 years and numerous problematic patches to show any (or only minor) remorse for the inconvenience caused. What appears to happen when an issue arises is everyone at CCP ducking behind the parapet, and when a representative does eventually post a response little if any regret or remorse on their part is perceived. I refer to the present situation as a case in point, although there have been many others panning out the same way. A simple "We're sorry folks - we messed up, and apologise for any inconvenience caused" (preferably as soon as the problem is identified) would go a long way to placating a potentially irate customer base.
I respectfully suggest that someone at CCP train Customer Relations, Communication, Fast Talk, and (Forum) Diplomacy to level 5 - his/her primary responsibility being to man the parapets wearing an asbestos suit (especially on patch days about 30 seconds after the server was originally scheduled to go live ).
You would be astounded at how far a little humility on your part would keep the vast majority of the population on your side when things go t1ts up.
