Edited by: Istvaan Shogaatsu on 16/03/2005 22:35:46 Good day,
Some of you whose origins in this game date from as far back as the beta test may remember me as "HellGremlin" and already are familiar with my work - those of you who arrived after the beta will more than likely have no clue as to who I am or what I do. It is thus with great pleasure that I invite all of you to read and enjoy what will soon be the next in a long line of thoroughly fascinating disasters of fiction authored by yours truly, to be posted here shortly under the title:
The Hamish Saga.
Chapter one - Serpent Chapter two - Infection Chapter three - Mobius Loop Chapter four - Schism
Interlude - The Guiding Hand Social Club
Chapter five - Heist
Interlude - Negotiations
Chapter six - The Swarm and the Toll of Bells
I have chosen to post my stories by offsite linking rather than directly on these forums, since I disapprove of the format and do not want my stories mutilated by curse-filters, image restrictions and draconian moderators. Please note that these stories will contain foul language and graphic depictions of god-knows-what - don't read them if swear words make you kill people. With that said, I hope you all take great pleasure in my work and invite comments of all sorts.

Yeah. It's a nice little epic imho.
Seriously tho Istvaan is a great man, and his writing is so sexy it makes me want to rip his clothes off and consume his muscles. Or something slightly less creepy, feel free to mentally insert a replacement for the creepy part.

We need good fiction in Eve again, and I need something to write about as INO reemerges.
ItÆs a ******* reunion, I swear, so many old folks have come in the past days itÆs scary.
Edit: Oh and HG, I can actually write now; I do it for a living, and youÆre fiction was a large part of my motivation for that.

That doesn't mean I can't brag about having read his depiction of past events, after all he's not right about everything, I distinctly remember some of those events happening differently, I wasn't that naive was I ?

Because of Istvaan Shogaatsu's long histor of writing excellent fiction, and having had a series of stickied PoTW's on the old Library forum, i have stickied this post.
I wish to echo his disclaimer, though, reading these stories could offend you. Because of their artistic value, I opted not to remove them, however, so take this as a warning.
Well written, I hope to read more soon.

Well, working on a third chapter as we speak... and a lot of my old fiction is archived on the Endless Corporation website, I think someone linked it in this thread. Also working on a novel whenever I'm not wasting all my free time on Eve, and I have a crapload of completely inappropriate short stories littered about my computer.
I really like writing.

Edited by: Istvaan Shogaatsu on 23/01/2005 05:56:30 I'm afraid some of the beta era stories are irretrievable. The backups I had were kept on my old computer, most of which exploded due to p0rnography overload and my stubborn refusal to defrag or practice the slightest degree of hard drive maintenance. I hoped that the Endless Corporation website would be sufficient to archive them, but that exploded too... now that they're gone however, I don't really miss the old stories, as I'd much rather start with a relatively clean slate and a bunch of irritating veiled references to the past which only beta-era players would catch ;)

There was gonna be another image near the bottom, but I made the mistake of depending upon a certain Pallantre who has failed to deliver for the third time, even though he kept asking for chances to redeem himself. We at the Guiding Hand Social Club are very disappointed in Pallantre, as I can only imagine his loved ones must be.

Well, I figured that the scientific articles section was sufficiently littered with mentions of Bose condensates and Boson particles (relating to, I think, Satyendra Bose - another contemporary physicist), that a mention of Einstein wouldn't be too out-of-place ;p

I love how you are including certain RP elements of the game (Jericho et al.) in the story.
Again, the style is what catches my eye.
Quote: This great skin of tungsten was not entirely a solid mass; rather, it was criss-crossed and channelled like the circulatory system of a great living beast - through these conduits and capillaries flowed trillions upon trillions of self-assembling armour regeneration nanites, the metal-breathing robotic life-blood of all such armoured goliaths.
That's just beautiful.

That's because HG is such a lazy****. All he does in his free time is gorge himself with KFC buckets and download goat **** while playing Matrix Online.
I personally will be suscribing to Matrix Online so I can set his life straight back on Eve. I will involve filling his email, eve-mail, and matrix-mail with shouts and screams to get back to writing the saga. Then I will track the sucka ingame, and follow him around shouting about when the next bit of fiction will be done.
If that doesn't work, I will parachute over his house in Canada, and convince him to start writing with the display of wicked looking knives, after we go out and get plastered of course.
Yeah, if HG's fiction is like a luxuary yacht of the most snobby and filthy rich variety, and HG himself is the captain of the ship, then I'm the first mate that's trying to wake the**** up to keep us from running into big icebergs. And you know if HG's yacht of RP Fiction****getry connects with an iceberg, many species of aquatic animal life, fish and mammal, will most certainly die from ruptures of convienently placed oil tanks on that yacht.
I'm doing the best I can to get him to keep going.
This is all you can ask for.
In the meantime, have a cigar. ____________________________________

Because "ma'am" doesn't sound very militaristic, does it? I don't know about any native-english armies that allow "ma'am" in case the superior officer is female. It's all "sir" this and "sir" that.
|

Andre Ricard

I do believe that sir or ma'am IRL varies from nation to nation, and indeed in different branches of service, depending on tradition. It's entirely feasible that Minmatar military tradition stipulates calling all military officers their equivalent of "sir" (remember they're not speaking English, either, but rather Matari.)
Besides, Vuylsteke stikes me as a "sir" kind of officer, regardless of normal convention. --- Justice is the only thing I have left. The lives of thousands be damned. |

Yes! You heard that right! Chapter 7 is getting ready to rock your literary bowels.
For future reference, we have discovered the miracle narcotic that suddenly makes HG all creative and stuff. As your official HG ass-kicker, I promise you massive quanities will be purchased for his consumption.
Prices will most definately soar, making this narcotic unavailable to bums and weekend glue-sniffers. These lower class trash will most likely kill each other for the funds to buy this drug, thus riding us of their prescence, and making the world a better place.
But that's just the bonus of getting HG to write again.

This is from the galactic news:
Quote: Stunning news has just filtered out of the Amarr Empire. Doriam II, Emperor of Amarr, is dead at the hands of an unknown assailant.
Details are still sketchy at this moment, but the Emperor's death has just been confirmed by the Imperial Chancellor's Office. The Privy Council has been called together to sit in emergency session.
This is from chapter four of Hamish Saga, near the end, written months ago:
Quote: Istvaan leaned forward over his cup, inhaling the vapours thoughtfully. His words took on a portentous gravity. ôThere is a great schism coming in the Empire of the Amarr. I do not foresee this Emperor remaining in power much longer.

I am so goddamn sorry about how long it's taking to crap out chapter 7, by the way. Certain obligations have sidetracked it - you should pick up the first issue of E-ON to see what some of those obligations are.

I will be speaking to mr. Shogaatsu about this very soon hopefully.

I figure it'll certainly be finished by the time folks' EON issues start arriving, so those of you who aren't getting it will have something mildly amusing to read nonetheless ;p

Excellent, im glad you liked it!
Now, would you be willing to help me write, say, a 10-page comic? There doesn't have to be much text, and it would be nice to do a comic based around the GH-SC.
If you still own those Imperial Apocs, then it would be totally sweet if you could write up a draft comic storyline (doesnt have to be too long) focussing on these ultra-rare ships. make something up along the lines of "GH-SC intercept and steal Imp Apocs".
Fill it full of your creative, written genius, and I will do my best to make some artwork to match.
Convo me ingame for details when you have a spare 5 mins - I can't wait to get some ideas rolling out, and especially to have a chat with someone with such a legendary status as yourself.
Until then, fly safe
Also, if any EVE Devs are interested in this, let me know and we can work out some details.
I would be happy to help CCP out with some imagery stuff/Photoshop work. ____________________________________________

After chapter 7 of the Hamish thingy is finished, I'll need about a week to rest the ol' brainpan and recharge my creative juices with a lot of booze binges and drug abuse. Putting out any sizeable piece of writing tends to drain me mentally, but after that, I'd be all too happy to pitch in, and I'm sure a number of my corp-mates would be too, for a chance to be featured.

Istvaan, I just finished reading the entire saga from front to back. Bravo! Your descriptions and all the little details were hungrily devoured by my sponge-like mind!
Fantastic job all around and very nice illustrations as well. I've been away from my own writing for far too long and this is very inspiring stuff.
Golan is a bit busy in real life but I'll make sure he sees this. I'm sure he'll be pleased with the way you wrote his character. I hope this is not the last we see of him?
I would, however, be very curious to see how you write him in the future. Obviously the man has some deeply ingrained beliefs and principals and yet he is now in the employ of one of the more famous Minmatar in the galaxy, and a female one to boot!
If he or I can be of any assistance in the future, or you find an opportunity to include the "established mercenary joint" he joined in a future story, just let us know.

Though I must admit that I felt some things in the confrontation between Istvaan and Golan felt like they were going too smoothly, like it was too easy to convince Golan you are no enemy. But meh... Who am I to judge a deluded slavers state of mind... ;)

Baring in mind that I couldnt write anything close to as good as that is, It just felt it had something missing that the other chapters had. I mean, I loved reading it, and thats not to say it wasnt a great story. But, the others had, I dunno, a hook .. or something that this one was missing.

The incident in the GH club was very well done I felt ... I actually found myself wondering where the Inquisitor was just before he burst through the door ... and then the tables are turned by civilised discourse/conversation ... oh and a good congnac
The end fight was a touch fast but I guess that's because at the same time the Amarr would be looking to get in and out asap ... so they are the ones setting the pace ...
Very good overall as ever ...

A fine cognac and a decent cigar can go a long way. Personally, I prefer them to be preceded by a decent meal. My waistline, however, disagrees.
One day, I will try and revisit the whole lot of these and try and give some constructive criticism, Istvaan. All writers need a cold appraisal of their work in order to improve and refine their technique and ideas (and I need practice at giving feedback without causing offence). Praise is great, but you can't learn from it. Right now though, I'm just enjoying the whole concept of long-term planning of in-game actions combined with the rich storytelling after the event. Needless to say, I'm curious to know what happens next.
Sometimes, I think an Eve Writers Workshop type of thing would be a good idea. Bunch of people that like writing get together and rip each others' material to shreds before it's published. What remains after the carnage gets published here. Kinda like evolution - only the strongest stories survive.

It's not a matter of "hate", but if you are looking into the small details, and trying to polish your stuff...
- The Admiral immedately believing it was Istvaan Shogaatsu is just a bit overdone
- It does rely quite a bit on people being familiar with the characters from the Intergalacti Summit (or elsewhere), but then I think that is at least partially appropriate. Perhaps you could spend some more time introducing them (I love how you manage to sound just like those characters, though)?
- I think you should be thinking 'less is more' when it comes to Istvaan himself. Personally, I think that Hamish should be more central in his own saga.
On the other hand...
- Your control of the english language is impressive
- The stylish descriptions make a nice trade-mark. This is actually a two-bladed sword, but so far it's not cutting you.
"Still, there was something about the intensity radiating from the stitch-ridden ghastÆs piercing eyes that foreshadowed this was no ploy." - a prime example. Over the top, but so is Golan, who fits the line pretty well.
- It just *drips* atmosphere... "...A conservatively dressed Amarr gentleman stuck out most of all, dancing stiffly with an olive-skinned girl as though he had a broomstick wedged in his unmentionables; in the corner, a raucous mob of Serpentis smuggler-captains hailing from the savage Fountain region made sure to let the rest of the club know how much fun they were having...."
and
"TrevizeÆs eyebrows shot up like Venetian blinds. ôSlaver hounds?ö
Jackpot, thought Istvaan"
are amongst my favorite (fractions of) parts from the text, for those very reasons.
I hope I don't come off as some sort of poncey *******, writing these comments. I do have some editorial experience, and am honestly trying to give you useful feedback.
Otherwise, I'd just stick to the "Great work! Keep it up!"...and I'd mean that. Sincerely. ------------------------------------------- Sometimes, I wake up but keep on dreaming. |

Edited by: Istvaan Shogaatsu on 19/10/2005 16:11:40 Now that's the sorta feedback I treasure, Beringe. Thanks. I know this chapter felt kinda rushed, just wanted to squeeze it out and appease people, I'll keep the notes in mind for whatever comes next though ;)
As for the Admiral being convinced too quickly, I figured the fact that he had foreknowledge of the Shogaatsu character from his own time in the Empire, and wasn't entirely dead-set on killing him when he set out to reclaim his medal - all it took was a bit of face-to-face convincing on my character's part. Plus that segment was starting to drag on, I never planned on it being quite so elaborate.

Edited by: Beringe on 22/10/2005 07:47:57 I was readily able to believe that Golan would take this action, actually. The problem was largely that people that didn't know the admiral would, by just reading the story.
It's not exactly a weakness - the saga builds upon a certain amount of pre-knowledge.
Nothing ever happens in a vacuum. Dostoyevsky probably taught that lesson best.

Photoshop layers and the pencil tool did the bulk of the work... I created a layer for engineering, command, structure, weapons, stuff like that, then just used a screenshot of an Apoc underneath the layers as a guide for the structure of the hull, and filled the rest in as I went along.

Edited by: Istvaan Shogaatsu on 21/04/2006 13:06:27 The official reason for the Hamish Saga ending, is that Hamish has fulfilled his destiny. It was always, from day one, to betray the Minmatar and jack them for a couple billion worth of assets. The corrupting implant, the steady degeneration of Hamish's personal values throughout the first saga, were all hints as to what was coming - I like to give victims clues regarding a planned treachery and see if they still fall for it, heh.
As for the Chorus of Angels Saga, you'll be glad to know that the first chapter has already been written for the better part of two weeks. It just needs illustrations. It should make for some very interesting reading, as it re-introduces an old and powerful ally, and something from the darkest days of the Endless Corporation... ;)

Endless Corporation Fiction
Heh speaking of Endless Corporation, i just realized something last time I reread Heaven, it mentions highly technologically advanced 'dark joves', and was written in early beta... Yet another prophetic "coincidence" that you came up with the Enheduanni from 'Theodicy' two years beforehand?
I mean, Enheduanni talk to you in your thoughts, and so did your 'dark joves'... Enheduanni can't be fought due to extreme technological advancement, and the 'dark joves' live in jump space.

I meant in the cosmic sense. We've both been waffling for a few months TBH and within twelve hours of each other we finally get our butts back in gear without even speaking to each other.
The Hand Guides. Or somesuch.
Also, I finally had a chance to read over the chapter.
Sweet Zombie Jesus. The cat has not only left the bag, but it has attached a rocket booster and is now somewhere in the stratosphere. I was expecting you to keep that one under wraps for a while (and as I said elsewhere, you wonder why Gauti may not be completely happy with you. ) Still, magnificent atmosphere, and it sets the wheels in motion for more awesomeness to come. Great work as always.
And as you often ask for constructive feedback, ill give my humble opinion in the only piece that seemed a bit odd.
"The infiltration of the Matari agent aboard the Ship".
Killing another matari to actually get inside the ships seems odd, if it was a gallente agent i would buy the idea of killing his own bloodline. However with minmatars it doesn't seem so plausible, or at least to me.
The act of actually killing his own blood should have had some minor consequences. Perhaps we will see this unfold in coming chapters.

I'd hafta disagree, for two reasons. The first being, we've seen countless examples of Republic Minmatar being fully willing to destroy a Bestower packed with five thousand slaves, just to get at the sole slaver-captain and his few dozen Amarr crew.
The second is, there's no Gallente slaves aboard the Chorus of Angels ;p

Just read through the whole story arc, Istvaan, and I thought I'd try to give some more elaborate comments than just "it's great!".
First of all, I do really like it. Your writing style is clean and easy to follow with good grammar and story-telling techniques. I realise some of the happenings are tied in to in-game events, but I've tried to judge the text mostly on how it reads as a separate story, without knowing the background.
Your story-flow is swift and as a reader I have little dead time. To achieve a high pace when the characters are essentially only talking is an art and these parts are the ones I like the best -- the parts when the characters actually act. In this respect, the most "action filled" scene -- the ship battle scenes against the Tempest are really the least interesting for me. What lifts this scene is the bit about Istvaans show of sympathy for the dead slaves (character development) and the political aspects of relations to Jericho faction (although I do think the whole swift solution of the "misunderstanding" came about a bit too fast. A quick call was all that was needed for Jade Constantine to be convinced? An small story-arc about how operatives rushed to establish this "proof" in time would have made for a more plausible story I think).
Another really strong point of your text is your lifelike description of the millieus. My favourites are the gritty Gallente implant clinic and the slow walk and dialogue with the vista of cold Caldari skyscrapers in the background. For some critique, I found that the inner sanctum of the GH-SC seemed to vary a bit in exactly how secure it is. The Eve-sister coming to look for her leader is led straight through the base of operations where the results of a major heist operation is being celebrated -- that sounds amateurish and inconsistent to me. Another critique is that the names are quite complex, so it becomes difficult to separate them from another when you jump a lot between them. In some situations it would have been nice to have some more reminder than just the name. I had to flip back several time just to remember who the person was that the story now focused on. That said, you do a good job at separating personalities overall, and create distinct characters also when they don't have any bizarre body modications to make them stand out.
I like that he characters grow over time and that e.g. Istvaan grows from being a mysterious and unapproachable "X-files bad guy" (as is the impression I get in the first couple of chapters) into more of a human of flesh and blood with his own demons and good sides (as presented in the almost family-like structure of the close-knit Guided Hand Social Club) as time goes on.
I find it a great touch to have minor characters return through the chapters, like the Sebiestor bartender at the club (strangely enough I felt a character-character link there, bartender reminds me of Amial's personality somehow. Anyway). I find myself wishing more than ever that you could get out of your pod in game to actually spend 0.0001 ISK on a cup of tobacco-tea ...
As said, I really like the read; the story is compelling and professionally written. I hope to see more and from reading this I look forward to maybe meeting you in roleplay sometime.
/Amial
PS: on a side note -- what happened with the Gallente body-implant fetishist? Was he killed in the Amarr attack to reclaim the cross? I must also admit I feel I'm missing the finer parts of the endings of chapter seven, since I don't know who Jamyl Sarum is ... DS

Jamyl is the leader and Heir of House Sarum, she was supposed to commit suicide when the last Emperor was selected, but seeing as she didn't say the words of the suicide ritual, her troops crashed the ceremony shortly before she self-destructed her battleship, and she hasn't been replaced by anyone in the Sarum Family only a fool would believe she's actually dead.

Another interesting fact is that yes, the events do very much correspond to reality.. if you'll look over the 'intergallactic summit' forum just now, you'll notice announcements about the angel cartel going to war..with sansha's nation. That said, all of us are real characters (and people) with our own established personalities. Its nice to sometimes find yourself featured in something like this :)

Intall it and then open your document with the story in, send it to print (yes, print) and you will see the CutePDF writer as a printer device. Select and send it to the printer and it just creates a .pdf file on your hard drive. Done and dusted.

And I have to say, "Oh my god." Its such fantastic writing, and now I've finally stumbled upon your writings, I've got something to read between E-ON's!

But yes, your writings are a fantastic inspiration, and while I just spent 20 minutes just staring at a blank Notepad page trying to come up with a story, and one with such a hard enticing line (As like 200 Rounds) to draw the reader in... And failing. This coming from someone who liked to call himself a roleplayer and an author. Bad, huh?

That said I know Tom's been crazy busy working on various E-ON stuffs and other things, but I actually wonder if a lot of us "old" writers who have now been published by CCP several times have perhaps gotten too miserly; we don't put stuff on the forums any more because we're saving it for possible publication later on. I know I'm guilty of it and I'm going to take active steps to begin to give to the community again. --- What good are actions if there's no one to tell the tale afterward?...

Yeah, I'm sorry. I don't think I'll be updating this story anymore. Recent revelations have soured my desire to participate in a game whose developers cheat.

Edited by: Sevarus James on 13/02/2007 14:38:17 Istvaan, give it some time. They didn't admit to everything in public, I know, and yeah, that hacked me off good as well, but...all of the good stuff didn't go away because of it. Its out in the open regardless, and if Hellmar is to be believed, things are in place to prevent it from happening again. If this were SOE, I'd be packing bags right behind you, but this is CCP, and they've created an amazing world for us to wander about in and go nuts.
I've been here since 03 in two separate characters, running corps and enjoying the virtual world...and my first thought was to pitch it. But EVE is more than just those frackin' devs that went overboard. Its us as well. No world, especially Real Life is perfect, and there will be problems and those who take advantage of situations. Adapt and overcome is and has been our motto.
Give it a chance man. You are a part of the lore, history and back story of this wild and crazy place.
Its been an awfully good ride regardless of what came out recently, hasn't it?
A lot to say that a LOT of us out here would miss you, your corporations evil, er...amoral antics, and some of the best fiction I've read in a long time.

I think HellGremlin's stuff is the best EVE fiction in existence, since the links he has in OP aren't working anymore I fixed something up on my site.
Enjoy
