My view (and mine only) from trawling forums, reading the Fearless newsletter, seeing growth charts, plans for further games etc, is that CCP are looking to get the best return for their buck on a game that is no longer growing substantially, and probably never will again....
It was growing very well when they were working on FIS - the core of eve.
Eve has the only internet spaceship game in the world. Anyone who thinks 350k is some sort of cap is crazy. This game has allot of growth left - as long as it isn't abandoned.
They will get the best bang for the buck if they continue to develop this game.

I don't want people to mistake what i'm saying here, I'm one of the people pleading with CCP to change their ideas.
On the inside, to the CSM, you might see "lots of exciting things coming for FiS", inside CCP hq. You speak with CCP daily.
But what do us players get?
Soon Gäó
How long do CCP think people will hang around with that terminology. Only yesterday CCP Prism X stated in the Ship spinning thread that CCP are in a planning stage, 3 months after the old functionality was demanded. How long, after planning, can we expect the few devs still working on Eve to give us that back?
I guess my real question is
"How long should people expect to wait for something more than Soon Gäó"
Another 3 months? 6? Will CCP devote 6 months of resources away from another project to give to EVE? Will they hire more devs to fill the need?

Oh, I'd say 8 years or so? The Soon terminology has been used since day 1 I think, hasn't it?

"It's great to see again but what saddens me is how Greyscale's 0.0 road map reminds me pretty much exactly of stuff that was discussed between Dominion and Apocrypha (about 2.5 years ago). I could go back and pull out old emails and (if I still had access) meeting minutes on the internal CCP 'Trac' pages that had shitloads of similar trains of thought to them. It's all been updated and thought through again, but the core principals and goals are the same: iterate on existing crappy game play and make it more better good fun awesome"
This was happening 2.5 years ago and nothing has changed.
Why should now be any different.
....
It should be different now because incarna has been released and they can see the results. They can see that incarna is not that great of a draw to the game. Even I thought the subscriptions would get a boost from incarna.
However, now that incarna was released, it is clear that having that many devs assigned to incarna, for so long, is not financially justified. They need to find a sensible place to finish up with what they are working on with incarna, and then reassign the devs back to FIS.
They also need to let the players know they are doing this. Because right now players are leaving this game because they think it is abandoned. (and it has been since apoc 1.5.) Make faction war occupancy pvp instead of pve

Everyone knows what happens when you get a new project, the old one gets not only put on the back burner, but also the interest in it drops aswell.
It stopped growing when they stopped investing significant developer resources into providing content and feature improvements. To make it grow again they need to reverse that policy and invest again. CCP's problem with the "new projects" is that they have probably underestimated the value of good-press from existing player base. Eve (as was) grew immensely from good word of mouth and players selling the game to other communities and circles of friends. Take away that aspect and reverse it - and you'll see Dust and WoD poisoned from the get go by people who have a bad tastes in their mouth from what CCP did to Eve.
Quote:The fact that Wis ties in with W.O.D makes it an important part of CCPs development process, added with the fact that we have been told that Eve is on the backburner whilst Dust is released, makes it hard for me to believe that Upper management will go "ok here's more resources for a game that we are kind of done with".
Whats pretty shocking to me is how bad Incarna actually is from a technical viewpoint. It makes me feel that WOD is years and years away because what we see from the CQ test is frankly appalling. Compared to mainstream avatar based mmo's its like cavemen bashing rocks together to make sparks. This tells me that CCP is going to need to survive on Eve subscriptions for quite a while yet while trying to keep those WOD devs in salary. There is a balancing act sure - but you cannot afford to let your sole income source go.
I think there will come a critical point for CCP when (if they do not divert massive resources to eve) they will be pressed by dropping subs and lack of interest that will go beyond eve itself and endanger those other projects. I mean if what we're hearing is the case (that eve is basically 2-3 teams of number tweaking balance devs) then its on subsistence mode already.
Say the Dust launch next year is not a crazy success. (Which given bad word of mouth publicity from eve players and dropping interest in core eve would be likely - since a game built around interacting with the eve server is going to be a bit of a flop if the eve server is sliding to bored stasis) then with the continuing decline in Eve profitability the company will have to make some hard choices.
One of them might be selling WOD license, laying off a portion of their employee base and putting the rest back on eve to trying to recover the situation. This might sound apocalyptic - but such things happen in business.
Quote:I find it more likely that PR will go into overdrive and try and ride out the next 12 months or so, and hope that between nex sales, and people that aren't disgruntled yet will continue to keep the wheels turning until a secondary form of income arrives.
PR without payload is an embarrassment. If its 12 months of "buy NeX/Plex" and walk around in your 1(4) rooms and dream of Dust then its going to do more harm than good.
What CCP need to remember is that their success was built on the goodwill, passion and positive word-of-mouth of their player base. I've never been the CEO of a big corp/alliance in Eve but I can say pretty confidently that I've delivered CCP several hundred subs for the best part of five years and thats because I love the game. Seleene and Mittani can make that claim with thousands upon thousands of players - they loved the game and convinced a lot of players to play. Every CEO/alliance leader/fleet commander/personality in this game can say similar really.
Take away those good vibes and desire to proselytize on behalf of this game and the decline will accelarate rapidly.

I anticipate the reaction to incarna may have changed some plans. We can only hope.
But yeah they undoubtedly need to finish up some things. I think they need to find good stopping points for incarna.
For example maybe they wanted everyone to be able to go into the Jita station and that is taking allot of resources to make that possible. Now maybe they will have to put a limit on the number of people in each station. Like maybe they will say after 200 people walk through "the door" it will need to be shut for the rest of the players at that station. "That room is packed so tight the door is pushed shut."
If they explain that the amount of time it would take to do otherwise would put off work on FIS I think the players would not only understand, but applaud them.
In any event I am not surprised they are keeping quiet about the future right now. If I were in their shoes I would be trying to find sensible timelines for people to wrap up their work on incarna and get back to spaceships. Once they have that figured out they should make a dev blog about it though.

I think it's pretty obvious at the moment with recent events that their current plan is not going over too well, and was probably quite a surprise to a lot of the project managers over there. They have been working under the impression a large percentage of the population wants Incarna. From past history of pining on the forums for years for Incarna, that probably wasn't unfounded. I just don't think they estimated what was going to be the reaction of releasing Incarna with microtransactions. They would have been better served getting Incarna out of the door faster and releasing microtransactions later. Incarna took them waaaaaaaaaaay longer than they anticipated, it was time to get everything devoted to getting it out the door so they could get back to whatever else they wanted to do....they just did the implementation wrong...now they're trying to figure out how to get things back on track after devoting so many resources for such an extended period of time, in addition to figuring out where they went wrong and what needs to be prioritized to make people shut up and stop whining over nothing. |

Xercodo wrote:I think what caused CCP to shoot themselves in the collective foot was their vow to themselves to always do two expansions a year. But CCP has grown and it is no longer as nimble, .
I think this treads somewhat in the right direction. Personally, I would be fine with 1 expansion per year as long as it added significant content to the game.
We haven't seen any significant content that added value to the gameplay since Apocrypha. Apocrypha was an amazing expansion, and admittedly, it raised the bar significantly in terms of what players could expect form that point forward. Each expansion since has been one bug-ridden release after another, some worse than others. Yes, we've had a couple of new ships (the Noctis being the most useful in a long time), we've had Incursions which are ok. Aspests of the game were changed (like sov mechanics), nerfed (loot drops, 0.0 anoms), allowing POSes without faction standing in 0.4, new skins and models for the Scorp and Maller, and other relatively minor changes that were arguably good or bad have changed aspects of the game and how we do stuff. The only major positive change that Dominion introduced which made 0.0 liveable, and the 0.0 nerf earlier this year returned 0.0 to the worthless wasteland it used to be renmoving the reward associated with the risk of trying to make a living in 0.0. So basically now we have to deal with the bullcrap associated with Dominion sov mechanics and costs without the benefits it added.
Our most recent expansion being Incarna saw the new turret animation which are gorgeous, but most people in 0.0 turn off anyway because they're lag-inducing. They're just visual fluff for high sec bears. None of the changes any real value to the gameplay. And of course, there was the actual "Walking in Stations". I hear a lot of its supporters bitching how people who've been wanting this for years are whining about it. Had we actually gotten it, people would have been quite enthusiastic. What we got was NOT "Walking in Stations". I think the best term I read describing it best was over on evenews24 where some guy referred to it as FAMC (Forever Alone Minmatar Closet). What we got in Incarna was a lot of hype and a bug-ridden, unoptimized code base that's being beta tested on Eve's paying clientele. We're almost at the time for the winter expansion and the Incarna expansion that came out months ago is not even complete yet. The made Incarna's priority to roll out the NEX store and introduced the mechanic for MT. And of course, there was the utter contempt and disdain that CCP staff showed towards their clientele during this Monoclegate scandal that soiled their reputation. They lost a lot of subscriptions over that one. Biting the hand that feeds you repeatedly will only leave you starving to death. That's a lesson CCP hasn't really learned yet.
But over all this time, issues that have been present in the game for years are being ignored and instead we get fluff and filler material that really adds nothing. Ship and weapon balance issues that have been clearly identified for years and render 2/3 of the combat ships in the game useless are still there. Antiquated POS mechanics that have needed a change are still there. Random issues and bugs are still there and unaddressed. You'd think that as CCP grew in size, they'd also grow in experience, but they haven't. The same boneheaded issues and questionable priorities are still being made by the same people at the top who are totally out of touch with the game itself.
As a result, players are making an exodus from Eve because nothing is being done to make their subs worthwhile. From the time Incarna rolled out, I went from leading an active, 95 member 0.0 corp to having less than 20 active members in about 4 month period after Incarna. Most let their subs expire, and subsequent out of game communications with them all echo the same sentiment - they're bored with Eve because there's nothing new to do. The game was bug-ridden, constant stupid changes to mechanics were and making getting ahead and supporting themselves impossible. I eventually left my corp and moved on because of this.
So all that to say, I support this move by Mittens and the CSM. CCP utterly ignore anything both their customers and the CSM says. The only thing that gets action is their subscriptions, and the press they get. In this case, the lid has been blown off CCP's incompetence, and it will force them to react. They really have 2 choices - actually pay attention to the press they're getting and listen to their customers, which will end up making Eve better, or they can choose to continue sweeping things under the rug and hemmoraging players.

The problem is so many people are used to the model of "let's throw everything in the expansion out there and see what breaks", then companies scrambling to fix what's broken. It has been the same way across the industry for a long time. CCP decided a year or two ago to stop doing this insane "throw it all out there" approach and are releasing things when they're mostly solid and releasing the rest as it's "done". Gamers aren't used to it and when they say "we released a new EXPANSION w00t! REJOICE!" they're expecting a whole mess of **** all at once, which isn't what CCP is doing anymore. Honestly the piecemeal release makes much more sense and is less game breaking than all their other expansion releases. Unfortunately, we live in an instant gratification driven world now, and that doesn't seem to be going over well. |

Which would be fine, except that they're still releasing expansions which are badly thought out and don't work as intended. And to make matters worse, they then ignore them in order to work on the next shiny.
FW anyone?
