Quote:No War But Rep War: The CCP/CSM Drama Explodes I seem to have underestimated the scope of my newfound (and, let's be honest, utterly ridiculous) e-celebrity. My CEO Update was intended to prepare this alliance for the release, in about a week, of a formal spotlight from the CSM on the topic of "FiS Neglect"; based on my experiences in the past, I assumed that if I wanted the gaming media to pay attention to what Some Guy Who Runs A Space Guild says about a niche MMO from a country surrounded by fart-water, I'd have to call in some favors and/or suck some dicks, as well as have the alliance ready to seize Slashdot/Digg/Reddit to even get the time of day from sites like PC Gamer or RPS. Oops. Without prompting, Eurogamer picked up the CEO Update, and then a viral media cycle kicked in - one site covered an issue and got a bunch of hits, which means every other site wanted to cover the CEO Update, and next thing you know we're in full drama mode. Rock Paper Shotgun, The Edge, Eurogamer, Gamespy, PC Gamer, Tentonhammer. I expected some in CCP to see the Update as a shot across the bow - but I expected them to hear about it on Kugu and have a chance to privately make some concessions before the CSM Spotlight came out. Instead, the media's attention means that we have launched a broadside into CCP seemingly out of nowhere, and everyone who has similar views about the downward course of EVE has looked upon what we did, judged it Good, and unloaded on CCP as well. The reason that this situation has escalated so rapidly is twofold. One, the chart that Jester drew up (the now-infamous PCU graph used in my update) illustrates something we have felt for some time with an icy clarity. Two, after the foolishness of the Incarna launch and Monoclegate, the media was eager to report on what has become a 'story arc' of sorts. The narrative plays well - "plucky players stand up to a corporation to prevent a Sony/NGE disaster". In an industry plagued with Bobby Koticks, I suspect the average gaming reporter gets a kick out of the CSM/CCP conflicts. So, here we stand, surrounded by a torrent of unplanned media attention. We can back off and let the dust settle, or we can increase the pressure on the suits to ensure that Flying In Space is once again something worth playing. If CCP chooses to be vindictive towards GSF or the CSM because we have dared to speak out against the neglect of spaceships in this spaceship game, we have already provided them with ample cause. After all, who would believe that this perfect storm of media coverage was an accident, not some conspiracy? I wouldn't believe it, even though it is actually the case. We must twist the knife. Now that we have found CCP's Achilles Heel, we must achieve some kind of victory for the players. Great, I don't run a gaming news site. How can I help prevent CCP alpha-testing World of Darkness in EVE?
You can do two things to help save EVE. First, and crucially, you can ensure that the truth gets out on the main Eve Online forums, which were recently converted to a new system that allows both rapid posting (no more 2 minute timer, thank god) and +rep. As a bonus, this involves tearing a cadre of fanatical pubbies into tiny strips of flesh. It seems that there are a few very vocal badposters who believe that the problem of FiS Neglect is literally a ~goon conspiracy~, and that everything would just be peachy in Eve Online if CCP just buffed hisec missions (again). We do not want to spam or obliterate the Eve-O forums; instead we must take stern control of the narrative there to ensure that the badposters in that cesspit are not heeded by anyone of consequence. Secondly, generate hits on media stories covering the FiS Neglect crisis. The gaming media functions on a shoestring budget and is desperate for traffic; we have learned since 2007 that the best way to get the media to pay heed is to give them the traffic they are so desperate for, rather than spamming forums indiscriminately and hoping someone deigns to write about the cacophony. A profit-driven scalpel is needed, rather than a sledgehammer. (I have a suspicion that being on the inside at TTH has taught me some useful methods to leverage gaming coverage, but we'll see if this works. No guarantees.) You can generate hits by linking articles that cover topics we favor on social media, or you could simply comment on their articles and provoke discussions. The following stories have broken thus far. Read them, spread them, ensure that the media learns that it's entirely to their benefit to listen to us and take our side: http://www.next-gen.biz/news/ccp-accused-running-eve-online-groundhttp://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-09-05-eve-csm-chairman-breaks-the-peace - This site scooped the story, and caused all this. http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/09/05/eve-online-stellar-council-head-hits-out-at-ccpPCgamer http://gamers.5starhot.info/news-eve-csm-chair-mittani-breaks-the-peaceGamerZone. http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/09/06/eves-csm-fight-back-and-some-thoughtsRock Paper Shotgun- This one is particularly good. I'm not one to directly support GSF, but I personally think CCP has been handling the matters with the CSM the wrong way, and trying to bullshit the people who are supposed to represent us.
Case in point: The lack of release on the Emergency CSM minutes, and the revelation on some CSM blogs that CCP has been trying to put words into the CSM's mouths (big no-no, huge disrespect for the playerbase).
Here's the thing, CCP: We want honest, open communication - NDA/politics/saving face be damned - and stop trying to gag the CSMs on the single most pivotal issue that has gripped the EVE Online community since T20.
It reflects poorly, y'know. See, I believe in something called R&R. No, not that R&R.
Respect & Results.
You cannot get results by being disrespectful to the people who are supposed to serve as the proxies representing the playerbase, and you certainly don't get respect by doing that, either. Respect is a two-way street, and when all parties abide by the rules of the road, results will come.
Until CCP's upper management understands that, they are screwed, PR-wise.
I don't agree with The Mittani's antics, but someone's gonna have to bend over backwards - and I don't think it's going to be the CSM. Not with the stakes this high.
The credibility of both CCP and CSM are at risk, and when you lose credibility, you lose the ability to sell your product effectively. |

EVE Online has nothing to do with internet spaceships and everything to do with avatars awkwardly walking around in a prison cell / captains quarters. At the momet I find it very difficult to believe anything CCP and The Mittani say.
I do not believe that many of the online gaming publications simply discovered The Mittani blog by themselves. I suspect that they were tipped off, most likely by the The Mittani himself.
The Mittani is simply repeating what many people have been saying over the last couple of months and is now trying to claim credit for himself.
Wasn't it only a few months ago in iceland that he was supporting CCP?
Also this talk of The Mittani taking the War to CCP will not work, just like the last round of bad publicity and protests did not work.
If history tells us anything is that player protests have never succeeded changing the path of a developer.
Why?
Once a developer changes direction due to player demands then a door has been opened that can never be closed
I agree with many of things that were said in his blog but then again I agreed with them when other players posted them months ago.
The simple fact is no amount forum posts, blogs, protests etc etc will change anything.
The suits at CCP have set the course and they will either succeed or fail.
You have the choice of either to stick with them or leave.
Hilmar said it himself, we will act on what the players do, not say, i.e whether they stay or leave.
If the The Mittani and goons decide to disprute thing in games to the point where you have thousands of players complaining then CCP can just simply ban them.
Ban them I hear you say, Yes. Remember, only a very small percentage of players bother with the forums and a even smaller percentage bother with the CSM.
The majority of players simply do not care and just want to play the game. If the Mittani disrupt enough of those players all that will happen is he and along with his sheep will be hated to such an extend that most people will be asking CCP to ban them and CCP win. |

I didn't say ban the complaining players, just those who disrupt things in game to the point where people refuse to log in anymore.
Also, the media would care for what a day, maybe 2, after that its old news and nobody gives a crap.

I think what caused CCP to shoot themselves in the collective foot was their vow to themselves to always do two expansions a year. But CCP has grown and it is no longer as nimble, and can't handle fast development on so many features and game aspects with so many different "cooks" in the "kitchen" without the amount of bugs and errors getting exponentially worse. What we need to do is to demand that CCP take their time to coordinate and document everything, and demand that they pull back to one expansion in a year and to move back to the "one huge patch" deployment style. I think the biggest benefit of this would be the change of people's perceptions of how much content is put into an expansion because we'd be moving back to getting a boat load of awesome all at once. I dunno, while I would agree that The Mittani is being disingenuous and that this is obviously some part of his fiendish junior social manipulator plot, and while I suspect he does want to hog the limelight and take credit for something that's already been rumbling along quite happily without him; nevertheless there is a sort of struggle going on right now for the soul of the game, and as far as I'm concerned his voice, and the power he has as leader of one of the biggest alliances in the game, is welcome on the right side. (What power is that? The fact that, ultimately, he could invoke a mass protest-unsubcription.)
The point re. developers being the ultimate "boss" - yes, well, that would apply with a standard "themepark" MMO, but it doesn't apply to sandboxes, as Sony Online Entertainment learned to their cost. The worst that would happen from developers' points of view would that they would take this scenario as a warning, and be less inclined to make sandboxes in the future, because they're probably more trouble than they're worth. (The counterweight to that is that sandboxes are the best type of MMO, and developers who are at least as concerned about art as they are about money will still want to make them, despite their problems. Are CCP stll that kind of developer? We'll see.)
But as far as EVE and CCP go, fortunately or unfortunately, this game is still a sandbox, and is the only thing they're doing that's actually making money at the moment; it's the foundation of their plans, so to a certain extent, the players have CCP by the balls, and can really make a difference if they show a united front. |

CCP is going to launch DUST in a very competitive market in summer 2012.
The success of DUST is extremely important to CCP.
The avenues CCP has to use to reach out to potential DUST players are not exclusive to game companies anymore.
Gone are the days of printed gaming media and selective printing of readers' letters to the magazine (~ -50% circulation over the last 5 years in Germany).
The highly organized EVE community can be a huge boon to CCP when it comes to marketing DUST or it can cause CCP endless headaches (by spreading messages like "CCP does not deliver", "lol, dust bunnies", "USP is tie-in to a dying mmo" all over the comments sections, community forums and in the web communities they are native to).
There is still a lot of time for CCP to change course, make commitments and show that they want to deliver on them.
This is not about CCP missing out on a handful of EVE subscriptions due to bad press, it is about making CCP think about how much they will have to rely on the EVE community's support (both in-game and OOG) to make DUST the success they are craving for. |

I agree that CCP have focused on areas that have no benefit to spaceships. Ive thought all along Dust is a pointless add-on which is too far removed by platform and genre to benefit the spaceship game. Incarna and WIS so far looks pointless and I still dont see what it will be used for other than creating an Ironforge where you can /dance.
What Id like to see from the OP is rather than just stating this is to highlight what he deems important to be developed. This may have been detailed elsewhere so apologies if so.
There are lots of ant- CPP posts at moment but to be honest most people dont really seem to know what they are complaining about. At present it just comes across as complaining against the establishment and tantrums with no constructive criticism.
I want to hear what people believe needs to be worked on, not complaining about what has been.

OK. Try this: "The actual problem is the lie."
In many cases what "needs to be worked on" is to not continue with "what has been" but changing course to recognize that 'FiS' is Eve Online. Everything else is an extension of that. If 'FiS' is neglected, there is no foundation upon which to build anything else.
And understanding that PR spin will be recognized for the BS it is. Credibility/reputation has been lost/stained. Corrective good faith actions must now be performed/observed. |

Frankly this is the reason I voted for you - I figured that sooner or later you'd "snap" and realise that formal CSM methodology doesn't work. Previous CSMs have done their best (or not in some instances) but once CCP says "No" the CSMs ability to modify that decision is extremely limited.
You on the other hand have a bit of an external platform in TTH - then of course there's Goons and all the websites they hit on a daily basis.
So pile on the adverse media, who knows maybe it'll get to the stage that Sony wonder whether their dev cash for the "exclusive" Dust is worthwhile. Unlikely but nobody in CCP management is listening to anyone here, so the only other option is to see if they listen to bad publicity and concerned "partners". |

Yes he is repeating what many players have been saying. But that is his job! He is supposed to represent players.
CSM aren't elected because they have original ideas. They are elected to represent the players views. He is finally doing this.
I agree he seems to be late to the game. But I suppose he may have been trying to be more diplomatic in his diplomacy at first and now seems to realize that won't work.
You say nothing will work. But then why even run for csm? If ccp won't listen to players no matter what then csm has no place.
As for him "trying to claim credit for himself", I'm not sure what that means. He is not pretending anything he said is original or some new discovery - quite the opposite. He is saying players are sick of this.
CCP Zulu posted what the numbers of devs working on FIS was in july of 2010. The last CSM minutes indicate that number isn't going to change. This is really what has caused 2 summers of rage players. Very few devs working on eve FIS features.
Yes there has been your token player saying "yay I'm happy for incarna." But the rage after it was released combined with the stagnant numbers has to send a message to ccp.
I'm Glad the CSM is representing the players views on this and doing whatever they can to get ccp to give us something. Make faction war occupancy pvp instead of pve

Its hard enough logging in at the moment, let alone trying to get some form of change in the higher levels.
Even if we make some form of change, it wont last, and a couple of months later we'll be in the same position while listening to the suits say "We changed! Its different this time!".
I really don't want to say or think that its too late, but after seeing the chart that Jester posted, where else are we going?
CCP growing as a company would be awesome to see, but it can't get far given that EVE is already stagnant and the current attitude in the high echelons towards its only revenue. |

Why bother having the CSM.. that is a very good question.
Also Mittani does not represent the players, he represents a small percentage of players and what ever aspects he cares about.
All that the Mittani did was managed climb out of the arse of CCP just enough to see daylight and realise that he has accomplished nothing other then get a free trip to Iceland and it hurt his ego. I think its wrong to portray this as a bunch of kids throwing tantrums. While sure, Mittani's 180 after his neville chamberlain is of course amusing , it shouldn't be allowed to derail the essence of the issue here which is:
CCP have been denying resources and support to the core Eve Online experience for a long time now. Some of us remember the "18 months" scandal as a promise that things would get better if we just kept trusting the company through the year and a half of drought and "stayed the course".
Well we did, but at the end of the 18 months all we got was reduced functionality hanger bay, a single room and a horrible NeX store and the promise of more of the same. And frankly its not good enough.
Sure Mittani is surfing the wave of other people's critique and passion here but then he is the CSM chair and its kind of his job to be at the front of the march throwing himself under the treads of the marketing department's MT armoured vehicles in the interests of spaceship content.
People are protesting that we've been given a crappy new toy (1 CQ) and one invitation to plug in mom and pops credit card (NeX store) after waiting 18 months for new content development to begin again. But this is Eve Online, which once was a shining beacon of space opera content and space war stimulation where things changed and you had to adapt to realities and potentials in space to keep viable.
Rather than characterizing us as spoiled children complaining because the parents have given us hardwearing shoes rather than a tin rocket I think its more a case of the parents shutting themselves into a back room and smoking rock for 18 months and offering us a pass of the bong at christmas to make up for the fact the house is now devoid of food and infested with roaches.
Anyway.
Gaming press gave a lot of CCP side coverage on the back of the "peace in our time" announcement last time. CSM? Well, some of them will be like many players, depressed and pretty much giving up with Eve. Others? Well, they don't do confllct or are happy to play for the long term and might see an opportunity if Mittani does end up sacrificing himself for the revolution etc.
But its unfair to say he is the only one speaking.
I advise you to take a read of Seleene's latest blog. Its frankly excellent and seems perfectly positioned to allow him to play the winston churchill role once chamberlain resigns.
In any case, this is a key issue now for Eve Online and its wrong to see it all as throwaway tantrums and flash in the pan angst. At this moment (as in the jita riots early this summer) at least you saw player passion and life. Better that than the placid order of the grave which is what you'll have when everyone that cares about the dream of eve online is finally unsubbed if this situation continues.

Thier are many posts about mittens declaring war on CCP, and we have all seen the links to the press, however not one Dev has commented on any of the threads
Very few other CSM's have also added weight to the threads , so is mittens is massaging his ego and making a one man stand
Many players will agree that we need more content in the game and less of vanity items, it truly is time for CCP to add something to the game to keep it from going stale
Surely CCP should make some sort of statement of what we can expect to get in terms of Fis
However has the relationship with the CSM's and CCP broken down so much that we have the chair of the CSM so openly sniping at CCP without any CCP response
The fact is that the playerbase should be the most important issue to CCP, the playerbase pays the wages and it would be folly of any company to ignore the source of it's income
Imo this only shows that CCP learned nothing from the outcry of vanity items and still have a deep lack of communication with its revenue source |

Lol true. If it was Mittani I guess the scene would go something like:
"I might someday (once the minutes are approved) have in my hand a piece of paper that agrees certain things (pending the red pens of the ccp marketing department) that will commit CCP to doing certain unspecified things within a flexible timetable that resolves a porous range of broad and unknowable issues!"

You complain that CSM is repeating the concerns of the players as forcefully as they can. That is what they are supposed to do.
You do not suggest what *else* they should be doing. So your complaints are not constructive.
You are also a bit naive to think that there will be major changes to major plans 60 days after we rage about incarnas release. There were 70 developers assigned to incarna for at least 18 months!
You don't just see rage on the forums when you are 14 months into it and then immediately announce you are dropping that and assigning them all back to spaceships. However, I would be willing to bet there is allot of discussion about assigning more devs back to FIS. When and how can they cut the incarna crew and still get allot out of the time already invested even if they need to cut some things short to get back to FIS.
And if the CSM is steadfast in demanding that CCP give some answers about when they are going to assign resources to this, I think we will see some more devs assigned.
What eve player does not want resources assigned to eve?
When we look at all the problems people are complaining about this is always the root of the problem. No one showed at the FW round table? Well the problem isn't a lack of communication. Its that there is nothing to communicate. There is no one working on FW.
Nothing new about low sec? Again no one is working on it.
The backlog of issues is barely making any headway? They have very very few people to work on it.
CSM is going to spotlight this issue of no resources for FIS and I am glad. It is the mother of all issues for eve.
But its not going to change in 60 days. Thats unrealistic. However I do think in the next 6 months we will see CCP assign more devs to FIS. Or their game will continue to suffer. And it will suffer because of th age old reason, they ignored their customers.
I am not a fan of mittani or this csm either. I don't think I have said a single nice thing about them until they finally started pressuring ccp about putting more resources into FIS. But they are finally doing it so I am giving them credit for representing the players.

I would even say it all might be very clever politcal campaign from Mittani...
Assuming that CCP aren't really entirely dumb, as most of players seem to believe, they are well aware of the corelation between succes of Dust and EvE playerbase.
Without EvE community cooperating, embracing Dust as a cool content patch and actually use the new features, Dust will fade out in a few weeks as another rather generic scifi shooter. And if the current situation persists, it's entirely possible that the remaining players will ignore Dust entirely.
That said, it is likely that something will happen during next few months. CCP will probably release the rest of cqs and a first multiplayer bit of WiS in the winter. The summer expansion will be devoted to bug fixing, rebalancing and updating current content to soothe incontent players and break ground for the real summer "expansion" - Dust.
Then the Mittani would say that changes were brought because of his influence...
Altough I am probably exaggerating about Mittens, it is very likely that despite all protest or unsubbing, any major changes to EvE will come in summer - either prior to Dust release, in order to set the stage, or a few weeks after - If it will be renewed development after succesfull Dust launch or desperate attempt to save sinking ship remains in question... |

Personally I couldn't care less about the meeting minutes now. So much time has past it is no longer relevant.
I suppose you have to give a few points to CCP there, just keep delaying them until enough time has past where either they no longer have any relevance or where people no longer care.

To CCP I say this:
"Don't fly what you can't afford to lose."
I really do think its a woeful mischaracterization of the situation to see this as "goon wardec" sure, one might say the goons were a bit late to the party on the jita-riots and earlier protest against NeX/MT in eve etc. But back then you had Mittani confidently telling his troops that flashy dresses in NeX stores wouldn't impact their Eve. What's changed is I think that Mittani has woken up to the fact that content delivery via Incarna/NeX is a horrendous corruption of the way Eve is supposed to work and it does directly threaten the development of the core game (as evidenced by the low dev numbers applied to core Eve development).
Whatever.
At the end of the day Eve Online needs to be saved by its players. It was a game that was made successful by its players, sustained by its players, promoted by its players and made famous in the gaming press by its players. CCP the company have been the beneficiaries of good PR from a loyal and impassioned gaming community for years and years now.
Now I think what we're seeing is the need for a palace coup inside CCP management so that the developers who are still impassioned and enthused by Eve online can get the resources they need to keep the game fresh and growing rather than consigned to the slow decline of static abandonment.
This does need to be a revolutionary change. If Eve currently has a handful of teams and couple of dozen devs applied to it out of the 600 employees of CCP then something has gone totally wrong and needs resolving in short order so the restorative influence can be felt in time to save the subscriber-base. CSM needs to see those numbers, and frankly they need to be communicated to the player base. We need to see change happening.
I'm sick and tired of hearing "We'd love to but we don't have the dev/art/production resources" in response to new feature and content requests from CCP.
This is a 600 man company and this is sole income source. If you don't have the resources to keep this income source viable then get them.
Because if you don't solve this problem and keep Eve fresh and viable and get your community base back onside as enthusiastic supporters of CCP then I tell you something that your Marketing people should have already told the senior management.
There is a serious danger that WOD and DUST become poisoned brands contamined by the noteriety of your treatment of the Eve player base. For those products to have a chance of success you need to trade on the goodwill and passion of Eve players. Lose that positive influence (and see it turn negative) and making a commercial success of those projects will become much harder.

Can you really convince a company to shift resources from what every report has told them is an ever increasing M/T model market and that the subscription model is dead?
I find it hard to believe at this stage of Eve's life, that CCP won't just push on wholeheartedly with the nex store, in a hope to ride the wave of m/t success.
In my opinion, the more subs CCP loses only furthers there desire to try and make up for lost revenue by increasing sales in the nex. |

CSM-influenced Changes that occur within the first 6 months will tend to be the fruits of the previous CSM's labour.
An interesting implication of this effect is that CSMs will have an incentive to do push their best proposals early on and spend less effort on pushing CCP to implement changes from the previous CSM, and then spend the latter half of their terms in making fewer proposals and spending more effort in pushing CCP to implement their proposals.

In my opinion, the more subs CCP loses only furthers there desire to try and make up for lost revenue by increasing sales in the nex.
The counter to that argument is to point out to CCP that their customer base has been strongly hostile to MTs, and that studies also abound that show even more definitely that no MMO has survived an attempt to gain a new playerbase at the expense of ditching the current one.
In addition, no one will play EVE purely for the MTs. There has to be a reason to play at all, and if they neglect FiS, they won't have anyone who cares about buying MTs. If CCP want to sell MTs to EVE players, then it's strongly to their advantage to increase the number of players who actively log in and play the game.

I'm not sure thats a fair assessment. Certainly there are limits to microtransactions and one of them is that players will only pay a limited amount for vanity. Fans of microtransactions in other games WANT game-impacting advantage so if you were to go by "what the reports say" surely that logic would lead to the pushing out of gold-missiles in Eve. Of course the indication there is that CCP would face a massive unsub-wave and outcry and don't want to risk that particularly because of the perilous stage in the development of their other games.
AnzacPaul wrote:I find it hard to believe at this stage of Eve's life, that CCP won't just push on wholeheartedly with the nex store, in a hope to ride the wave of m/t success.
As I said, 1st problem with that these are not the extremely popular MT's of other games. They don't want to risk gold ammo + these are not traditional M(icro)T's either. MT's are downloadable civs for CIV5 or extra maps for MOW etc. Something I can buy for 1.99 and forget about. These NeX items are significant M(acro)T expenses for pure vanity and frankly whoever convinced CCP to try this is flying in a different reality to the rest of us.
Now yes, I could see the stubborn crazy icelandic ego pushing on just because they don't want to admit they are wrong though - so at some point you have to hope that somebody with some actual money invested and mortgage to pay goes and has a word with their lead producer and asks "why are you pissing off our golden geese with this craziness?"
AnzacPaul wrote:In my opinion, the more subs CCP loses only furthers there desire to try and make up for lost revenue by increasing sales in the nex.
Isn't that like a failing fast food join cranking up the price of its burgers to offset dropping sales? I can't see that strategy working for long.

Your blog post is well written, but I think the unfortunate fact remains: CCP simply doesn't care. Consider 'who' is appealing to them to change course. For example a random sample:
The Mittani Seleene Jade Constantine Roc Weiler White Tree Mynxee Rodj Blake
Hardly unknown players. In fact these are examples of EVEs core, its most enthused and pro active and there are many more.
Now if CCP isnt prepared to listen to them who would it listen to?

Dude, I would totally agree except for the fact that the NeX roll out is a complete joke. As it is, you cannot even buy something as simple (and OBVIOUS) as a pirate eye patch. Also, I want a pet slaver hound for my CQ. Then again, CCP's current pricing model would probably try to charge you 4500 AUR for the eye patch because, as we all know, eye patches are worth much more than two or three fully fit battleships, amirite?
If they really wanted to make money off of that stuff then it would all be priced lower and there would be dozens of items to choose from. They tried to do it too soon, with too little. If CCP wants to go to a non-subscription model then they are going to have to find a new way of thinking about how MT actually works. Seleene's Sandbox - My Blog, where I say stuff. |

Every report also says that fantasy MMOs outsell SF ones, but I don't see anyone suggesting that CCP should introduce Elves into Eve.
The fact is that Eve has been the success that it has simply because it isn't what the marketing suits and the focus groups say it should be. Dulce et decorum est pro imperium mori. |

If MT are not purchased then yes, at least in theory you could convince the company that MT are a poor revenue choice. The trouble being is that, in the short term, MT will probably generate a lot of new revenue for CCP - thus proving the model.
In the long term (obviously harder to predict) CCP may see some of its core supporters and players move away from EVE which in turn strips the game of its heart and it sinks into decline. MMOs need a 'critical mass' of ardent players to truly thrive and CCP may lose them.
I would suggest that CCP are counting upon their loyal core to remain and 'stick it out' with the expectation that they simply wont leave EVE. By dangling carrots of 'soon' features that tactic (as employed so far) could well work -at least until a new 'MT subscriber base' is in place at which point CCP can safely jettison the 'old guard'.

Every report told them this?? What about the reports of people unsubscribing? What about the reports of people not logging in anymore?
These are the reports that should really matter to ccp. Not some yahoo who never ran a game for more than a year speculating what the gaming industry will look like in 10 years.
CCP has a successful business model with this game. For all the talk *very* few companies have managed to get that. CCP should put a huge value on not screwing it up. Therefore a huge burden of proof on those who would convince them they need to change this model. Nothing I have read or seen even remotely meets that burden.
If they continue to just try to make up for lost subscriptions by revenue from mt they will indeed run the game into the ground. It doesn't take a genius to see that. Make faction war occupancy pvp instead of pve

I don't think we're 'attacking' CCP per-se, we're definitely out to send a clear message to the upper management: EVE Online is about flying in space and we feel that it's being neglected over things like walking in stations. We've made it clear to the guys on the ground at CCP that we absolutely still love them, and you should too. People like CCP Soundwave, CCP Xhagen and many more are all people who only care about making sure EVE Online is the best possible game it can be. But even then, we're not making an enemy out of the management and neither should anyone else. We're just trying to prod them publicly into doing what both we and the players feel is the right course of action: Making a game about space ships. |

The word "inconsequential" leaps to mind. If what seems to be happening (the corporatization of the non-corporate corporation CCP) then decisions are being made that will be little (if at all) influenced by a fragmented community such is EVE's amorphous player base. This is always spoken of in some corners as a substantial and influential core group, but in the eyes of corp-think it's neither substantial, nor representational. In fact, through corporate eyes, there's a larger flood of transients, and counting it in terms of money, those who "care" about the game don't generate enough revenue to generate the much desired black ink. In short. It's a group that can be easily overlooked without affecting the projected bottom line.
Moving the "battle," as it were (read: tempest in a teapot from a corporate perspective) to the forums only ensures two things will happen. One, the advocates will be buried in the flood of posts by the transients. Two, the evidence of a strongly divided community (between the self-declared elites and everybody else) will be so strongly pronounced the majority will indeed bury the minority. There is no basis for loyalty here. The temper of the OP specifically delineates this slight regard. It will be met with certain contempt. You might as well hand CCP the victory...in a game they've already won anyway.
Finally, though to the myopic and cloistered MMO adherents these "publications" footnoted might represent significant media coverage, in the real world they are of little import. They appeal to a confined group whose numbers don't amount to very much, and by no means are publications the corporate-minded are concerned with but for a thin, cosmetic consideration which is highly localized to EVE players, but not indicative of the "important" minds and those mindsets. The Wall Street Journal would be a more appropriate sort of publication to look to if one wishes to fathom what direction CCP is looking.
All the evidence says this is the move that's been made. It's the epitome of naivete to think it can be reined back in after the move has been made. So..."inconsequential" leaps to mind. It is an articulate, and sincere OP. However, it falls on deaf ears...the ears that in the end will make the decisions. You see, the decision has already been made. |

Everyone knows what happens when you get a new project, the old one gets not only put on the back burner, but also the interest in it drops aswell.
The fact that Wis ties in with W.O.D makes it an important part of CCPs development process, added with the fact that we have been told that Eve is on the backburner whilst Dust is released, makes it hard for me to believe that Upper management will go "ok here's more resources for a game that we are kind of done with".
I find it more likely that PR will go into overdrive and try and ride out the next 12 months or so, and hope that between nex sales, and people that aren't disgruntled yet will continue to keep the wheels turning until a secondary form of income arrives. |

However reading it just makes me think even more that the suits at CCP simply are not interested in anything anyone, including Devs have to say.
"It's great to see again but what saddens me is how Greyscale's 0.0 road map reminds me pretty much exactly of stuff that was discussed between Dominion and Apocrypha (about 2.5 years ago). This was happening 2.5 years ago and nothing has changed.
Why should now be any different.
Personally I think Eve is on the precipice of a slow and painful death similar to that of SWG yet ultimately it will not be decided by the players posting here on the forums, the devs, the CSM, any online gaming publication or anything else but by the suits at CCP.
They will keep on course until the income from subs/plexs decrease to a certain threshold for a sustained period of time.
The question is will it be too late by then?

The CSM is ******** and should just be done away with. This isn't like a labor union or political activists dealing with a government, it's a bunch of people playing a video game that can just go play something else when the game is no longer appealing to them. This whole business of the CSM is just silly. The onus is on CCP to figure out what the market wants and develop to that, not play this silly little game of "us against the MAN" every month or so. It's ******** and a really bad business decision. |

On the inside, to the CSM, you might see "lots of exciting things coming for FiS", inside CCP hq. You speak with CCP daily.
But what do us players get?
Soon Gäó
How long do CCP think people will hang around with that terminology. Only yesterday CCP Prism X stated in the Ship spinning thread that CCP are in a planning stage, 3 months after the old functionality was demanded. How long, after planning, can we expect the few devs still working on Eve to give us that back?
I guess my real question is
"How long should people expect to wait for something more than Soon Gäó"
Another 3 months? 6? Will CCP devote 6 months of resources away from another project to give to EVE? Will they hire more devs to fill the need?

It should be different now because incarna has been released and they can see the results. They can see that incarna is not that great of a draw to the game. Even I thought the subscriptions would get a boost from incarna.
However, now that incarna was released, it is clear that having that many devs assigned to incarna, for so long, is not financially justified. They need to find a sensible place to finish up with what they are working on with incarna, and then reassign the devs back to FIS.
They also need to let the players know they are doing this. Because right now players are leaving this game because they think it is abandoned. (and it has been since apoc 1.5.) Make faction war occupancy pvp instead of pve

It stopped growing when they stopped investing significant developer resources into providing content and feature improvements. To make it grow again they need to reverse that policy and invest again. CCP's problem with the "new projects" is that they have probably underestimated the value of good-press from existing player base. Eve (as was) grew immensely from good word of mouth and players selling the game to other communities and circles of friends. Take away that aspect and reverse it - and you'll see Dust and WoD poisoned from the get go by people who have a bad tastes in their mouth from what CCP did to Eve.
Quote:The fact that Wis ties in with W.O.D makes it an important part of CCPs development process, added with the fact that we have been told that Eve is on the backburner whilst Dust is released, makes it hard for me to believe that Upper management will go "ok here's more resources for a game that we are kind of done with".
Whats pretty shocking to me is how bad Incarna actually is from a technical viewpoint. It makes me feel that WOD is years and years away because what we see from the CQ test is frankly appalling. Compared to mainstream avatar based mmo's its like cavemen bashing rocks together to make sparks. This tells me that CCP is going to need to survive on Eve subscriptions for quite a while yet while trying to keep those WOD devs in salary. There is a balancing act sure - but you cannot afford to let your sole income source go.
I think there will come a critical point for CCP when (if they do not divert massive resources to eve) they will be pressed by dropping subs and lack of interest that will go beyond eve itself and endanger those other projects. I mean if what we're hearing is the case (that eve is basically 2-3 teams of number tweaking balance devs) then its on subsistence mode already.
Say the Dust launch next year is not a crazy success. (Which given bad word of mouth publicity from eve players and dropping interest in core eve would be likely - since a game built around interacting with the eve server is going to be a bit of a flop if the eve server is sliding to bored stasis) then with the continuing decline in Eve profitability the company will have to make some hard choices.
One of them might be selling WOD license, laying off a portion of their employee base and putting the rest back on eve to trying to recover the situation. This might sound apocalyptic - but such things happen in business.
Quote:I find it more likely that PR will go into overdrive and try and ride out the next 12 months or so, and hope that between nex sales, and people that aren't disgruntled yet will continue to keep the wheels turning until a secondary form of income arrives.
PR without payload is an embarrassment. If its 12 months of "buy NeX/Plex" and walk around in your 1(4) rooms and dream of Dust then its going to do more harm than good.
What CCP need to remember is that their success was built on the goodwill, passion and positive word-of-mouth of their player base. I've never been the CEO of a big corp/alliance in Eve but I can say pretty confidently that I've delivered CCP several hundred subs for the best part of five years and thats because I love the game. Seleene and Mittani can make that claim with thousands upon thousands of players - they loved the game and convinced a lot of players to play. Every CEO/alliance leader/fleet commander/personality in this game can say similar really.
Take away those good vibes and desire to proselytize on behalf of this game and the decline will accelarate rapidly.

I anticipate the reaction to incarna may have changed some plans. We can only hope.
But yeah they undoubtedly need to finish up some things. I think they need to find good stopping points for incarna.
For example maybe they wanted everyone to be able to go into the Jita station and that is taking allot of resources to make that possible. Now maybe they will have to put a limit on the number of people in each station. Like maybe they will say after 200 people walk through "the door" it will need to be shut for the rest of the players at that station. "That room is packed so tight the door is pushed shut."
If they explain that the amount of time it would take to do otherwise would put off work on FIS I think the players would not only understand, but applaud them.
In any event I am not surprised they are keeping quiet about the future right now. If I were in their shoes I would be trying to find sensible timelines for people to wrap up their work on incarna and get back to spaceships. Once they have that figured out they should make a dev blog about it though.

I think it's pretty obvious at the moment with recent events that their current plan is not going over too well, and was probably quite a surprise to a lot of the project managers over there. They have been working under the impression a large percentage of the population wants Incarna. From past history of pining on the forums for years for Incarna, that probably wasn't unfounded. I just don't think they estimated what was going to be the reaction of releasing Incarna with microtransactions. They would have been better served getting Incarna out of the door faster and releasing microtransactions later. Incarna took them waaaaaaaaaaay longer than they anticipated, it was time to get everything devoted to getting it out the door so they could get back to whatever else they wanted to do....they just did the implementation wrong...now they're trying to figure out how to get things back on track after devoting so many resources for such an extended period of time, in addition to figuring out where they went wrong and what needs to be prioritized to make people shut up and stop whining over nothing. |

Xercodo wrote:I think what caused CCP to shoot themselves in the collective foot was their vow to themselves to always do two expansions a year. But CCP has grown and it is no longer as nimble, .
I think this treads somewhat in the right direction. Personally, I would be fine with 1 expansion per year as long as it added significant content to the game.
We haven't seen any significant content that added value to the gameplay since Apocrypha. Apocrypha was an amazing expansion, and admittedly, it raised the bar significantly in terms of what players could expect form that point forward. Each expansion since has been one bug-ridden release after another, some worse than others. Yes, we've had a couple of new ships (the Noctis being the most useful in a long time), we've had Incursions which are ok. Aspests of the game were changed (like sov mechanics), nerfed (loot drops, 0.0 anoms), allowing POSes without faction standing in 0.4, new skins and models for the Scorp and Maller, and other relatively minor changes that were arguably good or bad have changed aspects of the game and how we do stuff. The only major positive change that Dominion introduced which made 0.0 liveable, and the 0.0 nerf earlier this year returned 0.0 to the worthless wasteland it used to be renmoving the reward associated with the risk of trying to make a living in 0.0. So basically now we have to deal with the bullcrap associated with Dominion sov mechanics and costs without the benefits it added.
Our most recent expansion being Incarna saw the new turret animation which are gorgeous, but most people in 0.0 turn off anyway because they're lag-inducing. They're just visual fluff for high sec bears. None of the changes any real value to the gameplay. And of course, there was the actual "Walking in Stations". I hear a lot of its supporters bitching how people who've been wanting this for years are whining about it. Had we actually gotten it, people would have been quite enthusiastic. What we got was NOT "Walking in Stations". I think the best term I read describing it best was over on evenews24 where some guy referred to it as FAMC (Forever Alone Minmatar Closet). What we got in Incarna was a lot of hype and a bug-ridden, unoptimized code base that's being beta tested on Eve's paying clientele. We're almost at the time for the winter expansion and the Incarna expansion that came out months ago is not even complete yet. The made Incarna's priority to roll out the NEX store and introduced the mechanic for MT. And of course, there was the utter contempt and disdain that CCP staff showed towards their clientele during this Monoclegate scandal that soiled their reputation. They lost a lot of subscriptions over that one. Biting the hand that feeds you repeatedly will only leave you starving to death. That's a lesson CCP hasn't really learned yet.
But over all this time, issues that have been present in the game for years are being ignored and instead we get fluff and filler material that really adds nothing. Ship and weapon balance issues that have been clearly identified for years and render 2/3 of the combat ships in the game useless are still there. Antiquated POS mechanics that have needed a change are still there. Random issues and bugs are still there and unaddressed. You'd think that as CCP grew in size, they'd also grow in experience, but they haven't. The same boneheaded issues and questionable priorities are still being made by the same people at the top who are totally out of touch with the game itself.
As a result, players are making an exodus from Eve because nothing is being done to make their subs worthwhile. From the time Incarna rolled out, I went from leading an active, 95 member 0.0 corp to having less than 20 active members in about 4 month period after Incarna. Most let their subs expire, and subsequent out of game communications with them all echo the same sentiment - they're bored with Eve because there's nothing new to do. The game was bug-ridden, constant stupid changes to mechanics were and making getting ahead and supporting themselves impossible. I eventually left my corp and moved on because of this.
So all that to say, I support this move by Mittens and the CSM. CCP utterly ignore anything both their customers and the CSM says. The only thing that gets action is their subscriptions, and the press they get. In this case, the lid has been blown off CCP's incompetence, and it will force them to react. They really have 2 choices - actually pay attention to the press they're getting and listen to their customers, which will end up making Eve better, or they can choose to continue sweeping things under the rug and hemmoraging players.

The problem is so many people are used to the model of "let's throw everything in the expansion out there and see what breaks", then companies scrambling to fix what's broken. It has been the same way across the industry for a long time. CCP decided a year or two ago to stop doing this insane "throw it all out there" approach and are releasing things when they're mostly solid and releasing the rest as it's "done". Gamers aren't used to it and when they say "we released a new EXPANSION w00t! REJOICE!" they're expecting a whole mess of **** all at once, which isn't what CCP is doing anymore. Honestly the piecemeal release makes much more sense and is less game breaking than all their other expansion releases. Unfortunately, we live in an instant gratification driven world now, and that doesn't seem to be going over well. |

The Winter Expansion sadly has the potential to be a NGE.
To avoid that CCP needs to get back to basics, ships, ammo and modules. The game has stagnated over the last two years. Nerfing WH and Hi sec will not reinvigorate the game. Stay the course they are on and EVE's best days are long past.

and yes the CSM was brought about because of a CCP Dev aiding an alliance. I believe that CCP Dev was not fired and the CSM have no power so again, what changed? |

Icelandic employment law prevented this.
EDIT: Actually these days, finding out that there was still a dev in EVE who cared enough about playing to cheat would probably be received as good news...
Malcanis' Law: Any proposal made on the basis that "it will benefit new players" is invariably to the greater advantage of older, richer players. |

That's why nothing changed no one was ever held accountable. T20 should of been fired, whatever manager approved incarna going live in its state should be fired. |

t20 was one incident in a series of cases of dev favoritism (often involving aurora events) that stopped after the media shitstorm over t20; those cases of favoritism we complain about today (e.g. ccp cranking down on the onlining of SBUs during extended dts in an unpredictable fashion) are laughable in comparison.
for years t20 would be mentioned at even the slightest chance of ccp misconduct, making sure the company was held to a very high standard in that regard.
ccp has (since the aftermath of t20) an IA team that is pretty accessible to players (and is getting invoked by 0.0 alliances every now and then to clear up conflicts about Gm decisions, favoritism, ...)
tl;dr what people complained about stopped. CCP's efforts to sweep the incident under the rug failed due to media outrage. What more do you want? |

The CSM concept was already being discussed before the whole T20 stuff happened. It was surely given a kick up the priority chain when all that blew up but it wasn't invented out of the blue specifically due to one dev's misconduct.

"T20" hasn't worked at CCP for years.

Wouldn't that depend on how bad the company needed him or if he was going to resign anyway? I mean sure he was cheating at eve and that in a vacuum should be grounds for firing him eventually. But how and when to let someone go involves business decisions that involve facts we are not privvy to. Make faction war occupancy pvp instead of pve

You have employment law to contend with and sometimes things are not as clear as they seem in hindsight. Say for example I had a guy stealing paperclips from my company in the UK and I decide to give him a formal warning for it. Thats me deciding not to immediately fire him and to give a chance for the warning to repair the guys behaviour. If I then come into the office the next day and decide "damn I want to fire the guy anyway" then I'd be in the wrong because I'm escalating the punishment I already handed out. We'll probably never know precisely what went on with T20 but its not hard to imagine this kind of scenario at play.
The real problem with the T20 scandal (in my opinion) is that I perceive a massive overreaction on ccp's part that ended up costing us as players far more than the discovery of an illicit sabre bpo did in the case of this rogue dev. We lost a degree of connection between developers and the game that comes from playing the thing you are developing. The rules and restrictions placed upon CCP employees post T20 were pretty strict and stern and I can certainly understand many of them choosing to just play something else to relax rather than live in fear of being found to be in breach of the laws in Eve now.
Combine that with the loss of the volunteer events team stuff, with the limitations and ultimate disappearance of aurora etc etc, and you had a single incident that led ultimately to a diminished game environment for everybody.
In retrospect the better option would probably not have been to knee jerk to restrictive internal affairs departments but simply ammend people's contracts of employment to ensure everyone realized future breach of trust would be terms for dismissal period with no wriggle room.
*shrugs*
