Goonswarm? You mean those SA guys who openly stated that they want to destroy EVE Online?
Naww man, why would we hate them? I mean, racist, sexist, irreverent, scamming, thieving, foul-mouthed bunch of people who still haven't outgrown their pre-pubescent years?
Naww, we couldn't hate them, could we?

Sup goonie o/ (goon alt post detected)
I'm impartial to EVE goons themselves, however it is quite clear they making extreme movements ingame sometimes in order to create an issue that divides the rest of the eve population.
A lot of people see them as the saviors of EVE-- removing BOB and making the galaxy a better place. However there is a flipside.
They make movements and have ulterior motives that are questionable. I don't need to go through them; nor am I going to feed your desire for goons to be talked about. If you're posting a thread asking about goons I am sure you can google "goonfleet" and find some information.
I like goons though. Their ingame motives however sometimes have me shaking my head in shame :(

Well, they DO have some allies, so I guess they are doing something right, strangely enough. Not that I for the life of me can understand who wants to NAP with them.

Some play to win at all costs.
Some play to grief others.

Well hate is too strong a word, but dislike - because of their avowed contempt for immersion. They glory in appearing to be jerks sitting behind computers. I too am a jerk sitting behind a computer, but I like to pretend to be a spaceship pilot in-game. Goonies think that the whole concept of pretending you're a spaceship pilot is a joke; therefore, to my mind, they have no real place in EVE and morally don't deserve it - i.e. don't deserve to be able to use assets that were designed with loving care to create an immersive universe for players to play spaceship pilots.

I hate Goonswarm because they chose to attack me, and did so dishonorably. Because they have demonstrated both dishonorable conduct in combat and unprovoked hostility, how else can I react than to hate such players?
Goonswarm has earned a complete and absolute ban from me. I will not knowingly provide services to corp or alliance that includes even a single player who has ever been a member of a Goonswarm corp. Any alliance or corp hiring such low life players is obviously no better than the Goons, and should be treated the same way.

I dont hate the goons, I love them. They showed me the error of my ways with mining and how to make even more isk to the point I can buy game time cards with ISK as well as increased the interest of this game for me for atleast another couple of years by turning me away from such a boring professon.
I feel all x miners should find a goon and give him a nice big warm hug for their effort's. I mean if it werent for them then many people who used to mine for a professon would soon become bored and leave this game. Surely they have converted and convinced a large number of players to adapt and make more isk then they could have possibily have hoped for.

I dislike goonswarm for the simple fact that as stated, they exist to collectively ruin eve.
Whether or not that original goal has changed to something better is another story...
however, I do find the frequent use of control-q, multiple stabs, ibis's/pods/cloak ships, staying docked in station the entire time your logged in for multiple days.... Very annoying.
You dont realize how bad it is, until everytime you see a goon login on your list, you can name the exact station, in the exact system that he is in, off the top of your head, as well as the last time you camped him, who he was docked with, and hell even that funny guy in local and what he said.
or maybe thats just me... My views and opinions are my own, not my corp or alliances.

Yeah once Goons learned they had to play the game a couple years to be any good, they eventually got converted. Its mainly the trial accounts and new characters who give them a bad name - there are some good people there who lead the swarm of idiots.
And goonswarm don't actually have any allies. They pay Red Alliance to be friendly, if payments stopped then the game would become interesting again. Most people who are "allies" simply don't want to fight the massive number of goons.

in a metaphysical way I like the goons cause I can easily dislike them and not feel bad for killing (although not many goons to kill in my area of space atm...) them or talking bad about them.
Its just they are some people who seam to enjoy to play the "bad guys" in this game. And i dont mean the cool, stylish way of "evil" like a mad scientist or some religious fanatics wanting to recreate society trough dead but the lowest form of vermin the galaxy has (like the general school bully, wanabe-pirate-gangsters, people who torture kittens, ...).
without evil there is no point in beeing good. and without people without class&skill there is no point in haveing class&skill yourself.
goons are the spice of live just as the envious and therefore aggressive people are the thing that makes shiney cars, expensive watches, and so on exciting and intersting.
you dont feel good because you HAVE something but because you know there are people who DO NOT HAVE it.

I couldn't give two sh**s about goons one way or the other.
BUT, knowing quite a lot of them in RL, the biggest mistake you can make is to underestimate them. They are generally quite well educated, most work in positions of power etc. Yet, they still behave like kids that never grew up, and that's what makes them dangerous.
Are they fools? For sure. Treat them as such though and it might come back to bite you in the arse.

I've never said that. I've said that the core elements as they have been developed lend themselves to griefing all too easily and that CCP should ease back on that.
"Griefing" doesn't mean doing bad things in-game, in-character, to other players in-character - it just means deliberately annoying other players, especially, of course, newbies. It's a real-world relationship that steps outside the game, not an in-game relationship. It's the difference between playing a con-man or pirate in the game, who does bad things and makes other pod pilots suffer, and using game mechanisms that allow con-artistry and ganking simply to annoy another player.
Now, again, annoying other players isn't a criminal offence or morally wrong. It can even be quite funny. It just destroys the game for anyone other than the griefers, of whom, unfortunately, there aren't enough in the world to sustain a game like EVE. As CCP are finding out.
There seems to be a lot of confusion around these parts about the concept "it's just a game". On the one hand we have people extolling the dog-eat-dog nature of EVE because (supposedly) it teaches some people (who must of course be idiots in the real world) a real world "lesson" of some sort. All very Nietzschean and noble. But then when griefing is pointed out, suddenly "it's just a game". But if "it's just a game", it means that the scamming, ganking, etc., aren't real. They are make believe scamming and ganking. So how can they be "teaching a lesson"? Unless, secretly, the aim really is just to annoy other players. Oh, but then "it's just a game" again.

i think you misunderstand the idea with "destroying eve". as it have been "bob" was eve, and their way is where the game goes. what i think they want to destroy is the influence that bob have had, and the fact that the game evolved around them and how they saw it from their very "one way" sight..
but that's just my idea, i don't like bob or goons, think they are both to extreme on each side of the line... in general 0.0 politics is about one thing "own it all and kill anything that ain't ours" which i think is very wrong.. the whole point of power is to use it with care and use it to help the friendly and stop those who wants to destroy that friendly and good attitude. irl it is only a matter of time before some one that acts like a ******* will have no place to hide and no friend to be with. this is because you can't change person (use another char) irl, and that is what makes it balanced that you can do whatever the **** you like, cause other people can choice to ignore you (or kill you if you get to much out of control). but in eve the fact of alts makes that balance impossible, this is where mechanic and rules comes in to stop people from doing stuff that other people would stop you from doing in a manner that they cannot do when in cyberspace..
the problem is, eve lack that mechanic and those rules....

If I got scammed or my Hulk ganked by Goons I would be annoyed but I would be annoyed with myself not the scammer/ganker because I would have done something wrong or not taken precautions to minimize my risks. It doesn't matter to me what the motivation was behind it.

So,you admit that something which you find 'funny' might be found to be 'not funny' by someone else.
Originally by: Barbelo Valentinian [ There seems to be a lot of confusion around these parts about the concept "it's just a game". On the one hand we have people extolling the dog-eat-dog nature of EVE because (supposedly) it teaches some people (who must of course be idiots in the real world) a real world "lesson" of some sort.
They do?
Originally by: Barbelo Valentinian
All very Nietzschean and noble. But then when griefing is pointed out, suddenly "it's just a game". But if "it's just a game", it means that the scamming, ganking, etc., aren't real. They are make believe scamming and ganking. So how can they be "teaching a lesson"? Unless, secretly, the aim really is just to annoy other players. Oh, but then "it's just a game" again.
That would be your 'non applicable' definition of griefing.
The last part of your post is just.......weird.

Hate Goons is such strong terminology. Personally I would rather go for: Pity, have no respect for and thank god I am not a.
I think that the main problem is that they have had egotistic asshats with delusions of grandeur as leaders since their inception, much like other alliances I might mention .
Their only real strength has been their numbers and their willingness to die on every op they fly on. Nowadays things seem to be changing however. As their failed campaign to take Delve has shown, todays Goonswarm lacks the commitment, and more importantly the skills, to follow through on their promises.
We should not hate the Goons, they have accomplished much and caused the greatest political upheaval EVE has ever known, the EVE-verse is better off because of it. Make no mistake, their part of the great epic story that this wonderful game is far from over. However I doubt that they will ever again be as effective as in their glory days, back when they helped take out -V- and LV. They may not be ready to pack it in yet, but they stand on feet of clay, controlling far more space than they can ever hope to effectively police or fully exploit, much the same position as LV found themselves in, back when this whole mess started.
And dont hate their smacktalking either, every 400 posts or so one of them manages a true pice of comedy gold, carefully hidden away like a diamond in a pile of manure, but there to be found for those willing to get their arms dirty to the elbow
Thanks a lot Goonswarm, you guys make me laugh!

^^This.
Arrogance bit them in their collective asses.
With SA's avowed desire to destroy EVE I cannot see how they gain any allies ever. Realpolitik I guess.
If they agreed they love EVE (and frankly I think EVE has converted many of them...just a gut feeling) and were doing their thing then rock on.
Phew, thanks for reminding me, I need to get my payment over to Nync by Sunday. You are a life asver.

That takes for granted the idea that CCP has perfectly balanced the game, which is highly unlikely even in the abstract, and especially unlikely given that they've invited griefers into this game to a degree no other game has ever done. (And just to be clear on this: I'm not talking about the existence of in-game mechanisms that allow scams, ganking, etc.)

Of course - did you think I thought otherwise?
Quote: Unfortunately you are wrong.Eve subscriptions are on the up and they have more paid accounts than ever.It continues to break records win awardsgain good reviews and CCP are finding out that there are lots of people this game appeals to and understand what they have created. For every person that quits another 5 subscribe.
If this were all there is to it then CONCORD would not have been made invincible, and "hardcore" players would not be complaining about how "safe" parts of the game are compared to the old days.
I see some vets (some of them not actually all that veteran) complaining that CCP has been carebearing the game because they've been "listening to the whiners", which is the reason why said vets do their best to flame said "whiners" on the forums. But this betrays a laughable misunderstanding of how devs use forums. Sure, they monitor the forums and take some account of what peoples' opinions and ideas are on forums; but the greater weight of influence on their balancing adjustments comes from the information that you and I are not privy to that they get from datamining their own game. A game's devs know exactly what's going on in a way you or I will never know.
Now given (what should be obvious) that the forums aren't a particularly important influence on the devs, and given that this game's design charter was for a player-run, open PvP roleplaying game that allows adult, moral decision making, why are they are gradually forcing the game to be "safer" in certain ways? Is it a sign of greed or a sign of growing desperation?
I leave this thought as an exercise for your brain cell.

Lolwhut?I just said subscriptions where rising and you counter with this BS?Are you claiming that the reason we have over 200K accounts is because Eve has got a bit safer? Don't insult my intelligence.
People can still suicide gank your hulk, wardec your corp, gank you in losec, hire mercs to suicide gank you etc.The fact that a player-run,open PvP roleplaying game that allows adult, moral decision making is a tiny bit safer than it was 2 years ago has no bearing on the number of people subbing for this game.
The only desperation I see is in your posts as you become more and more irrational.

And I said there's more to it than that. CCP will also be looking at trends and trying to predict and anticipate. (For instance, did you know that the ratio of female to male players rose sharply towards the end of 2007? How long before that do you think ambulation was in planning?)
Quote: People can still suicide gank your hulk, wardec your corp, gank you in losec, hire mercs to suicide gank you etc.
Yes, and those are not griefing - but those perfectly legitimate mechanisms can all too easily be used by griefers. And instead of being part of the drama of the "rich and immersive universe" EVE say they are striving to create, griefing stands outside that rich and immersive universe as an event in the real world impinging on the player, thereby nullifying EVE's intent to create a "rich and immersive universe". And when you're shooting for the big league, as CCP obviously is, what was once a somewhat cool feature can become a handicap.
Quote: The fact that a player-run,open PvP roleplaying game that allows adult, moral decision making is a tiny bit safer than it was 2 years ago has no bearing on the number of people subbing for this game.
Oh sure, invincible CONCORD makes things only a "tiny" bit safer, and that has had no effect on the number of subscribers, no sirree jimmybobkins. Anyway, I didn't say EVE is safer full stop, it's safer in certain limited respects. Clearly, in view of the fact that the original intent was for a player-run universe, invincible CONCORD is a kludge (it's the imposition of a rigid structure on the game by the devs). A kludge trying to solve what problem? A kludge balancing the bad decision to make griefing too easy. Why is it necessary? Because CCP is caught in a bind: it can't return to the fully open world it began as, because the griefers who have found a home in EVE would overrun high sec and seriously dent subs from new subscribers, the vast majority of whom want to roleplay spaceship pilots the way it suggests you can in the FAQ, and not be reminded they are "just playing a game"; on the other hand, it can't make too-drastic changes that prevent griefing without losing subs from the riff-raff it has already invited into the game. Well, it might be able to - CCP are very clever folks so they might yet find a way of preserving the morally weighty gameplay while preventing griefers from misusing it, and time it right so the rise in subs from normal players takes up the slack of griefers leaving (although of course some will adapt). But until then, CONCORD and other recent "safety features" are a stopgap measure.
In effect, CCP have tried to pen the griefers into low sec while they try and figure out what to do with them. This is a holding decision that satisfies no-one, and can't last, because it's the direct cause of Empire hugging, lack of progression through to 0.0, etc. But it's the best they could do for now.

Hate's a strong word, can't say I hate anybody.
Their style of gaming is one that I can't relate to, personally.
It's like movies, some ppl like Comedy, some ppl like Drama, some ppl like Horror.
I don't like Slapstick Comedy that much, I like serious movies with really good drama, some suspense, a little horror, a little bit of darkness.
For example most Goons would prolly enjoy Jackass The Movie, I gave Jackass 2 stars, yeah it was funny in some parts but it was just one gag after another.
On the other hand some SERIOUS movies like Hotel Rwanda, Terminator 2, etc I gave those movies 5 stars, because I like dark serious movies and thats pretty much how I like my gaming too.
My favorite games were Deus Ex, Diablo 1 and Doom 3, because they were dark and serious.
I was attracted to Eve because it's also dark and serious.
But when you have 6000 people who basically act like Larry Moe and Curly, that kinda takes away the darkness of the game.
Thats just the way they play their game and that's fine, but personally I don't find them entertaining.
I find BoB entertaining because of Molle posts like "Tick Tock" it just sounds more dark and serious which is what I enjoy.

Oh yes, it's difficult alright, but CCP are smart people - and for the reasons I've outlined, they will HAVE to minimise griefing if they want EVE to keep growing. One possible angle they could take advantage of is that griefers (who could care less about immersion) are likely to care less about their stuff than normal players (who care more about immersion). (It should be unnecessary to point out that by "normal" players I don't mean carebears - I mean people who take seriously the "rich and immersive universe" CCP "strive to create", according to their FAQ).
Originally by: Doonoo Boonoo Seeing as how you think that this is a serious problem but have yet to post any proof or exact figures with relation to how widespread this 'griefing'is would you care to pluck some figures that you made up in your head out of the air and give me some indication as how bad you think this is?Say if there is 35k players on the server how many are 'evil' in real life.Or how many people in total are using game mechanics as a means to cause genuine harm?what would be your estimate of ships destroyed by 'evil' people in rl?
What are logic are you using to come to these sort of conclusions?
Since I haven't said griefers are evil in real life, I don't know where you plucked the idea that I think they are from - your arse perhaps?
As to "serious" - well it's not all that serious; it's not even all that serious to me personally (just a minor irritation). It's only somewhat serious for CCP if they want the game to continue to grow and not stagnate as it did for some time during 2006-2007.
As to what percentage of players are griefers, since I believe CCP have penned them in low sec by means of invincible CONCORD, then I'd look at the recently-released figures for gate traffic - what was the traffic figure in low sec, something like 19%, something like that? Obviously some of those people will people passing through, some will be legit pirates and such, and also many griefers will have carebear alts to do their dirty work, and of course sometimes will venture into high sec, but 19% gives some kind of upper boundary if my logic is valid. A large minority then - large enough for CCP to not want to **** them off, but also large enough to cause even more problems ****ing off new players that CCP wants if the game is to grow - if nothing is done about it.
Originally by: Doonoo Boonoo Like I said, until you show me proof that it is real and happening on the scale you think it is I will consider it paranoia and hysteria

This:
"The way that you win in EVE is you basically make life so miserable for someone else that they actually quit the game and don't come back."
Obviously they are not here to play the game, they are here to ruin the game.
CONCORD provide consequences, not safety; only you and... scouts, logistic ships, people to web you, alts with bonuses, not fitting nice gear, avoiding trafic hubs, etc... easy right?? |

Goons don't care if they are liked or not. I don't want to be anyone's e-friend because that is pathetic. You heard right, it's pathetic. Make some real friends and stop being such a loser if you think that's how games should be played.

I like Goons because they're good allies. Always willing to give you a hand if you need it.
As for the "they want to destroy Eve" propaganda, even IF an actual goon said it, it's pretty obviously taken way out of context.
Seriously, only an utter moron would think 5000+ players want to destroy the game they have fun with. Besides, some of the corps of Goonsswarm aren't related to the SA forums. ------------------------------------------

Well the goons will conquered and then another alliance will come along and stomp them into the ground, But seeming goon controls the market now and there so Bloody well supplied, I think it going to take a lot to nock them off.

to the tcf guy.. the only reason u think they r good allies is cos they have not ****** u over yet!... many are the stories of alliances and corps whove made deals with goonz only to be stabbed in the back at the first opportunity.. The southern coalition will eventually fall in upon itself due to greed and egos.

The reasons you have outlined are based on your own,ill informed, biased opinions not fact.Btw every MMO has to do it's best to keep griefing to a minimum darling. It's not just Eve.The only problem is that many peoples definition of griefing(including yours)can't be applied to Eve. Lolwhut?'Griefers care less about their stuff'.How does this theory of yours help CCP to minmise griefing or determine who's a griefer?

I hate Goonswarm because their high SP players are decidedly average at PvP and rely on spamming pure newbies to win fights. They abuse ingame and out of game mechanics constantly (see portrait pack) and have had players banned for bookmark bombing. They have only ever won because they hack other alliances teamspeak servers. They talk big without being able to back it up and I'll be glad when they are finally removed from 0.0 space.
I think it is terrible that CCP actively endorses allowing them to harass, nay should I say grief, peaceful miners in high security space. Especially since they have openly admitted to trying to tarnish CCPs good name. I suspect this may due to the numbers of DEVS playing inside the Goonies. A fact they are often shy to admit but was mentioned by CCP themselves during a New york Times interview.

Naww, we couldn't hate them, could we?
Christ, are people still bringing up that crap about us wanting to destroy the game? If that had even a hint of truth to it don't you think our membership would have all but disappeared in the light of CCP's investigations? Sorry pal, but you've fallen for some PR hack's line of bull****. We're still here, we're still playing, and we're still having fun. Next meme.
And let's see - thieving and scamming are considered legitimate tactics in the game and are practiced far more competently by other alliances and folks back in empire - don't go lumping that mess completely on us. We at least let you know that if you're stupid enough to not follow recruitment procedures and try to bypass them by floating around some isk that you'll be losing some money. We're very honest in that regard. Actually, you can trust us that we'll do it.
Hmm, sexist, racist, irreverent and foul-mouthed - you got us on that one. But then, so are you. So is pretty much everyone at one time. You keep throwing that **** in our face, so we run with it because of how much it ****es you off. You're nothing special, and you sure as hell aren't some patron saint of tolerance for multi-cultural diversity, so get down off the high horse.
So some of you hate Goonfleet - works for us. Go ahead and wardec us over it. Come to 0.0 and give the folks who didn't move to Delve something to shoot at. Just head south - we won't be that hard to find.
the following is a direct quote from the linked wired article made by the so-called man in charge of the goons in EVE
"The ability to inflict that huge amount of actual, real-life damage on someone is amazingly satisfying" says Houston. "The way that you win in EVE is you basically make life so miserable for someone else that they actually quit the game and don't come back."
forcing players to outright quit the game is in some way, to you, NOT destroying EVE I guess. i also guess cats crap rainbow-colored eggs in your world too
