I'd like to bring to your attention a major imbalance in missiles, when compared to turrets. It's quite a serious problem really, but one that seems to have gone unnoticed. Namely, that missiles don't look as cool as turrets when firing.
I recently acquired a G15 keyboards, so I could fire a 'full volley' from a Rokh. And I have to say, it looks really awesome, to see 8 rails (or blasters) firing at once. Try the same thing on a Raven, and what do you get. A big blob, that's slightly brighter than an individual missile, that kind a goes 'pop' when it hits something.
Worse still, the 'missile blob' just kind of emerges from the centre of the hull. No turret firing animation, no 'visible hardpoints' just a little blob ejected into space.
Now, there's one missile which doesn't have all these problems. The torpedo, has an eminently satisfying impact and blast wave. Even when you fire a 'powerball' of missiles, you get multiple rings on different planes, which means it at least looks like they got hit by several shots.
Smaller missiles, however, don't do this.
And don't get me started on the 'annoying yap' which is the explosion of light missiles. I mean, these are INTERNET SPACESHIPS. Where is the majesty of a flash and a yapping puppy explosion.
I would like to suggest the following be implemented forthwith: Slight sideways vector on missiles when they fire. A full volley of missiles shouldn't be a 'single blob' - they should spread, just a little bit, so you can see that multiple shots have been fired.
Launcher hardpoints - much like turrets, launchers attached to the hull. That animate when they fire. And missiles emerge from the launchers. Maybe even firing 'macross style' in all directions, and turning towards the target.
Explosions: Let them look like explosions please, not metaphorical elavator flatulence. "Big bada boom". Torps are a good start, the rest need to follow.
I think we can all agree, that 'looking awesome' is an area where missiles lose out chronically to turrets, and is an important gameplay factor that needs urgent attention. -- Crane needs more grid 249km locking? |

Yes, fancier missile effects would not be uncalled for. Perhaps a bit of extra flight time could be added to compensate for the altered trajectory, too.
But, yeah. These forums seriously need some indicator that the post has ended and the sig has started.

Haha, seeing a Minmitar pilot use the word aesthetic makes me giggle. Half the ships they never got round to removing the scafold from.
Not that they can compare with some of the more 'special' Caldari ships though, like the Moa.

Agreed with the little missile launchers on hull thing.
Then again, if the missile are launched and need to turn and all, it cuts their range because they waste flight time to get in the right direction and they need to accelerate.
Missiles are missiles, not projectiles with a combustion drive (or w/e they use).

I'll gladly take a 5% reduction on range of all missiles for visibile launchers and missiles firing away in all directions. Simply because it's so much more awesome.

I agree that having missiles get the same kind of detail to their firing graphics as guns would be very nice.
One problem here is guided vs. unguided missiles. An animated missile turret would make sense for an unguided missile since it has no guidance system, but for guided missiles, all you need is a hole in the hull nuch like on the Crow, Eris, and the Drake.
The other problem that I see is that I'd much rather devs spend their time on other, more pressing issues. Modifying the ship models to make room for more hardpoints, creating the actual launcher turret models, etc. would all have to be done for this to work and that's no small amount of effort.
One thing that could be done as a compromise is to have launcher 'hardpoints' added as simple coordinates within the skin of an existing ship model. Just like gun turrets, each launcher would be associated with one of these internal hardpoints and when it fires, its missile would spawn from there instead of them all spawning from the center of mass. This is not a perfect solution, but it would go a long way towards making missiles look more impressive and it wouldn't require a whole lot of effort. -------------------- "I am hard pressed on my right; my centre is giving way; situation excellent; I am attacking." - Ferdinand Foch at the Battle of the Marne |

If there were a FEW things I could get done differently in Eve, reworking the missile system would be one of them.
I'd LIKE to have my missiles appear from launchers rather than just appearing from the center of my ships. On a missile spewing ship like the HAM Drake it could look fairly spectacular.
I'd also like the ability to turn effects off at the push of a button. 99% of the time I like the game to look as good as it can but larger PVP battles murder my system and I am spending all my time looking at text (the overview) and a graph (my HP) anyway.

I recall that they had in fact properly shooting and following missiles in the first versions of EVE, up to the point that they would actually impact on obstacles, so if you hid behind an asteroid, you had a cozy spot.
It was removed to help with the serverload, because each missile had to be calculated serverside up to a certain degree and multiple caldari ships would create a laggy nightmare, much like a blob of droneusers.
Apart from this... YES PLEASE! Make those missiles fire out of proper missile bays!
(i really do hope that comes with the next graphics update, where they promised to upgrade effects and other stuff as well...)

I hate the way my gunboats have fully articulated moving detailed turrets that individually fire, while my missileboats just spawn this little bright blob in the middle of the hull, with no launchers visible.
The only ship that appears to have actual luanchers is the drake, and the missiles don't even come out of there!!!
I've love to see launchers appear when you add launchers to a ship, and I'd love to see the missiles actually emerge from the proper launcher.

Actually even conventional warheads take with them all of the reactants required to make the explosion. So in space, explosive weapons bang just as pretty if not more so due to the perfectly spherical explosion due to the lack of gravity. That and they're actually less effective since they don't have any fluid like atmosphere to slam into your ship. - Support fixing the UI|Suggest Jita fixes|Compact logs |

I stagger my missiles in my drake to convince myself that I'm doing far more damage than my woeful 369 DPS using Heavy II launchers. Months of training and all I've managed to do is break the 7 second ROF mark (using only 2 BCU II's).
Also, it seems to mildly surprise people when they get "hammered" by staggered missiles versus a blob. Most of them don't give the Drake credit for the number of missiles it can put into the air.

How about a compromise then. We make guided missiles fly 'out' and arc around.

I'd prefer if Missile Hardpoints were more like silos (the missiles are launched from there and then rotate towards the target) then launcher modules like turrets. ------------------------

Missiles are ugliness right now. The Drake (yes I fly one) has all these cool onboard missile launchers, but the missiles launch from the center of the hull with a puff of smoke. Makes no sense and just looks bad. Why not plop on a launcher model for ships that don't (like the Drake) have built-in launchers? And as others have noted, I stagger my missile launches to make them look cooler (and to enjoy the missile stream of doom when it impacts the target). If I could see tight visible clusters of missiles and not the missile blob, then I'd be verrah pleased. ___ Victory smiles upon those who anticipate the changes in the character of war, not upon those who wait to adapt themselves after they occur. ~Guilio Douhet |

Then I died a little inside when I found out that they don't actually do anything.
I'm all for this. I always hated the way a big blob of missiles looked coming out of the center of your ship. When I can be bothered to do so, I would usually stagger my missiles because it is slightly more entertaining than seeing the big missile blob. Seeing actual launchers though, would be sweet.

A G15 keyboard has an advantage for the missile user too - the opportunity for the perfect launch. If you want cool from your missiles then that's the way to look, a constant stream of equally spaced launches which works with missiles but just looks like your gun crews have never worked together if you try to do it with turrets.
Of course the explosion effects and such from missiles other than torps do have a cool factor, the issue is just that you have to look closely. The missile at the head of the blob, the cruise missile's rings...etc are all there for the discerning missile user while the turret user just gets a little tiny flash of light which in no way suggests a half meter projectile travelling at close to the speed of light. --

Lyrus... *clap clap clap*. Glad to see you're still enjoying Eve :). Oh, and /signed, I want to see missiles launching like on stargate atlantis :).

Ah, if all our problems were aesthetic
Haha, seeing a Minmitar pilot use the word aesthetic makes me giggle. Half the ships they never got round to removing the scafold from.
Not that they can compare with some of the more 'special' Caldari ships though, like the Moa.
I got to remember to turn on effects next time I see dreads go into siege, and to actualy look at what they are doing, see if the Citadel are worth watching.
That scaffolding provides additional EM resistance - useful for fending off Amarrian goldiboats.

Originally by: James Lyrus I'd like to bring to your attention a major imbalance in missiles, when compared to turrets.

Actually G15 is okay according to devs
I imagne is ok then if i create macro with G15 or anotehr keyboard that allow me to mine automatically...

Good luck with that. AFAIK, the G15 can only automate a sequence of keystrokes at the press of a button. It doesn't run things automatically, and it certainly can't interact with the game's UI in such a manner which would let you automate mining. Unless you can figure out a way of mining entirely using keyboard shortcuts?

Gods yes. I too was unhappy with the drake. I saw the 'launch points' and got my hopes up that they'd be used. No such luck.
We have the models already drawn, albeit in 2d on the module icon. Surely building a 3d object couldn't be that difficult.

I'd like to note for everyone that when your missiles come out at a random direction, they are going to be spending part of their flight time getting back on target, which will give an indirect nerf to missile range as a result.

They can just add a flat 0.5s increase to all missile flight times after skills are applied. Essentially, missile flight time wouldn't start from launch time but from the time it starts tracking the target.

Good point. In fact, it was a good point when the last 4 people mentioned it too. Still, it bears repeating I suppose.

Actually, missiles already have a built in "range nerf" in which they take time to accelerate to full speed. This is why EFT's missile range numbers are always off by a couple km, even on a stationary target. Sooo...we could just say that the built in delay is enough, and have a neato graphic.
If they really wanted to go nuts with the visuals, the missile could "pop free" of the hull, then its engine could ignite and it could go speeding off in the right direction. Ahhh, if only. /dream |

Edited by: Mr Ignitious on 12/05/2008 11:29:04 time to break the thread!! (sorry guys, i know how much fun you must've been having.)
YAH give missiles awesome buff to looks, and turret visuals!!
but for all of us sad sad gallente pilots with our phobos crying because it HAS a missile hardpoint visual but no launcher hardpoints, me wants missiles on my roden ships. And hey, why not give some more missiles to the lach, ares, and eris while we're at it
i say this not as "boohoo, my ships are bad which is me actually saying im bad and want eve to accomodate my weakness," i say it as i want my ships too look cooler/maybe follow manufacturers description a little more

I agree with this 100% !! I've always thought it was odd that they haven't made launchers for missles appear on the ships and actually fire missles.

I have been pleading for this since I first got a Rokh and then saw the awesomeness that is firing 8 turrets at once.
My Drake and Raven are so Meh in comparison.
Buff missile animations!
Visibile Missile hardpoints FTW!!
This is my Opinion and not that of Black River Industries or any of its members. |
