I received this note yesterday: Khanid slavery From: (name withheld) Sent: 2012.11.16 22:00 To: Ston Momaki,
Dear Mr. Momaki, After the second day of my GÇ£vacationGÇ¥ in Khanid space, I stopped noticing the beauty and stopped enjoying the hospitality. The nightmares have begun. You canGÇÖt avoid them after you have visited one of the big corporate slave markets and seen the faces and smelled their misery. Faces of all races look back at you with the very personification despair; speaking a language of pain that has no words. You use GÇ£Wall of ShameGÇ¥ to describe those who dump slaves into space, well that is small compared to what I have seen in just a few days down here in slavery hell. Put Khanid Transport Corporation on your Wall of Shame. There are millions of slaves in their flesh markets, bought and sold like the catch of the day.
What a foolish and flippant attitude I had to conceive of the idea to spend a working vacation down here. Oh, I thought IGÇÖd do my part; help a few thousand of the worst case slaves; take in the sights then go back to my own business. This place could end up destroying my sanity. It is horrible here. I will never look upon the caldron nebulae again without seeing the face of misery.
How many souls does a Retriever full of ore redeem? Depending on your skills and the market, between 7,000-8,000. But what is that in a market of millions? I understand now why so many want to just shut their eyes to the reality that is slavery. I understand now the cop out of doing nothing because anything done is too little. I understand now the temptation to turn your face away and say, GÇ£Slavery is not that bad.GÇ¥ To admit the truth is too horrible.
I thought IGÇÖd better let you know what to expect. If I can keep up one or two runs a day. IGÇÖll deliver 100,000 plus slaves into your care at the end of the time here.

He who answers before listeningGÇö that is his folly and his shame.
Who among us might be gulity of this? I, for one, am guilty. In my own idealism, I sometimes wish to craft others in my own image and fail to listen to the deeper elements of their souls. That perhaps is what I did at the beginning with Manwe. Perhaps I saw only what I wanted to see and pushed upon him the rigors of pacifism where those ideals appeared to fit but really didn't.
I see this daily as I monitor com channels while on the routine of patrol. There are few good listeners among us. I know that I definitely need to work harder at this skill and craft. In fact, I beleive listening is the most powerful tool for peace that there is. Too bad so few strive to use it.

I recieved this today:
Suffering From: (name withheld) Sent: 2012.11.19 15:07 To: Ston Momaki,
Dear Mr. Momaki, Today marks the one week mark of my two weeks down here in purgatory. I am regretting the commitment to two weeks. I have come to hate it here. There is literally no end to the human suffering here. These people have created a bottomless pit of human suffering. There is no end to the number of people held in horrible slavery.
I feel I may need much help after this experience. I am finding it hard not to hate the Khanid people. I know this is wrong and I know that it is a minority of very wealthy, very evil people who are doing this. But, the things I am seeing, hearing, smelling, etc. are searing an indelible image on my soul.
How do you help some when all need help? Tell me Mr. Momaki! How the hell to you choose who to help? How the hell do you do this without ending up hating someone?
My good pilot, you will feel hate from time to time, but to be aware of it will enable you to "put it to death" so to speak. I can't answer all your questions. I would just say do what you are confident is goodness and to the greatest degree you are able.

Clues from communications received from the pilot working in Khanid Prime seem to indicate that the slaves her is redeeming are in the worst conditions he can find. If that is true, our facilities will need extra prparation for medical and nutritional needs we may encounter. We had determined that our water supply was sufficient, but as a precaution, I am enroute with another 8 tons of fresh water for the initial days next week.
Rescue work has been light over the last day or so. Only one to report.

The other day I confiscated a small cache of weapons belonging to a pilot who described himself as on a mission to "pod" pilots who used autopilot while travelling in their pods. Using profane crudeness, he described his joy in destroying his victims as if somehow simply because they used autopilot that they did not deserve to live.
By this time, little should surprise me. Yet, such things still do. What sort of Psyche takes pride in such things?
We currently have 54 slavers in out temp center. This is a larger number than what is typical. We have observed a greater number of slavers travelling with their slaves in attempts to make illegal border crossings. What meaning this has if any, is uncertain.
Our dieticians are requesting a supply of concentrated protein supplements for the Khanid center. I will be working on securing these in the next few days.

The following was received last evening:
more than expected From: (name withheld) Sent: 2012.11.24 20:35 To: Ston Momaki,
Dear Mr. Momaki, It turns out that there will be more than 200,000 people given to your care on Monday. I've managed to make more runs than I thought I would.
I saw a very beautiful thing today. I was mining and a large asteroid was slowly turning, occluding the sun on each revolution. It was seeing the sun rise and set over and over again. At first I didn't want to look at it. I had a hard time admitting that there could be anything beautiful here. But then as I saw it again and again, I thought of the people, the slaves here. Maybe some of them can have a life, enjoy a sunset or sunrise.
But I can't get out of my mind that millions are here in these squalid markets. It haunts me. You know, the 200,000 + people bought out of these markets for two weeks of ore holds did not impact the market price even a tenth of an ISK. The supply of these poor souls is without end. May those responsible be judged!
I will be traveling to Khanid Prime tomorrow to receive the new Matriculants into our center there. I have offered the services of our counseling staff in Ation to the pilot. NUVOS has offered the use of their hsopital ship if needed. Since they have an office in the same station, this would make a suitable arrangment should we need to transport any critcal cases to Dresi.

220,900 people are being received into the DSTON Matriculation Center in Khanid. The task now is to see to their immediate medical, nutritional, shelter, psychological, etc. needs. The staff and volunteers are eager and ready for the work ahead. It will mean a lot of long days and nights ahead for many dedicated people.
This particular Matriculation center has been constructed a little differently from the others even in Amarr space. Why? In every other case, we have been located in either Minmatar or Gallente corporation property with the same in station management positions. In all other situations, slave markets are small or non-existent, even in Empire space. For example, in Dresi there is a limitted market and there are no slaves for sale from the stations where our centers are located. However, in the Khanid situation the markets are massive and corporate run. This generates unprecedented difficulty in keeping our center orderly and at peace with the station at large. This was why we had to obtain large amounts of construction material to rebuild our residential areas.
We admit that by establishing a large center here in Khanid space, we open the door for a very difficult dissonance between the 200,000 + Matriculants no longer slaves and on their way to repatriation and the 340,000+ slaves languishing on the station market at any given time. We ourselves look at this and grieve. If there were a magic wand that could be waved and we could Matriculate every slave on the Khanid Transport Storage station, we would in a heartbeat. For now, we live with the dissonance and do the best we can.
Our repatriation policy has always been a "first received, first repatriated" approach. I am asking Dr. Nalthkh and the Development office to revisit this policy in the case of the Khanid Center. It makes more sense to me to expedite the repatriation policy and to keep this center at a high turnover rate.
More pressing is the need to sort out the immediate needs of the new population and to take a careful census.
Progress is being made on establishing reliable sources of supply for the water and food needs of our Centers. Water production is the first concern. A new production facility is being established in Dresi today. The Disciples of Ston bid you peace |

We will strive to take care of these refugees and many who are able and willing may find employment with us serving humankind. My apologies if I seemed to be criticizing the Amarr in my earlier post quoted above. That was not my intent. Many in our Matriculation centers follow the Amarr religion sincerely and peacefully. I have respect for all peaceful faiths. My reference was to the bloodlust of a few fringe cults. Indeed, these cults give all peaceful sincere religion a bad name. Please accept my apology if I offended you; it was not my intent. Cultic bloodlust is not limited to one race or nation. Violent religious extremism is a human sickness infecting all races and nations. We will give updates on the disposition and progress of those you have place in our care.
It is likely that Dr. Nalthkh will be picking them up as he is currently nearer to Tanoo.
One word. I only guessing, but this guess is from the many experiences we have with refugees of all kinds; I bet most of those 600+ are not deadbeats but true refugees from sets of circumstances where violence and misfortune has cast their lives into crisis. We will try to open doors to help them begin again. Thank you for caring enough to see that they found a home.

The new Matriculants in Khanid Prime are happy, but quiet. There is an awareness among them of the many more yet enslaved right in the very station. There is a mixed feeling in the center, but that is how it should be. Establishing leadership among the new residents is somewhat more difficult in that there is not one single leadership structure that is universally acceptable. Most of our other centers have an elder structure. We may structure the center into sub communities and bring in cultural representatives to help orientate the residents before they are repatriated in different locations.

Tahrmal Nalthkh has helped me grow. How? By not allowing me to ignore resources that I have that can be used unselfishly to help others. "Be unsleflishly efficient, Ston!" was a recent remark. "We must get over the 'airhead' approach to humanitarian work." OK, so I can weep over my tea over the injustices around me while efficiently producing fresh water for our Matriculants to drink. It has been a concept I have been somewhat slow to adopt but is being forced upon us as our outreach grows.
Our water production facility in Madm has closed and moved to Dresi. More production facilities will be opening in the near future.

I think a quiet drink and maybe a game of cards with some of the recently rescued people at the temp center would be a good close to this day. There is something genuinely restorative in spending time with the wit and intelligence of ordinary, humble humans who do not consider themselves gods or super-humans and who treat me more as one of their own. I liken it as the psychological/emotional equivalent of stepping on terra-firma after an extended time in space. It helps re-establish one's true size in light of the whole universe. The temp center is unique in that it stays small out of necessity. Wherever my duties take me, I hope I can continue this part of our work.

Your assumption is false. It is a standing policy that no member of DSTON may purchase slaves for any reason. It is against our values to pay into the slave market in any way. However, we regularly receive purchased slaves into our Matriculation Centers. The most recent example being the 200,000+ received into our Khanid Center.
Now, Mr. Iste, I will appeal to you to liberate your slaves. We would be happy to recieve them into our Matriculation program.

Elite slaves...Am I beating a dead horse when I speak again of the plight of these people who have been subjected to physical work to the point of premature aging and a total physical breakdown? If slavery itself were a dead issue instead of a very live and present injustice, then perhaps yes. These rescued today represent the ongoing use of people as if they were merely consumable material.
We would say to them others like them, "Rest now, you forced labor is over." However, these do not even know what it is to rest; not in the sense that most of us do. To them, sleep in small amounts is just that unconcious gap between one hell of labor and another. Rest, that concious time of rejuvenation after labor, that time of enjoyment with family and friends or just in solitide; this is unknown to these abused souls. Can they be taught to rest? We'll try. There are many here to receive them and help them learn.

Yesterday's rescue recorded below was the last that my current brave crew performed. I thought that we would be working together for many more through the weeks and months ahead. But, due to my carelessness in not understanding the new regulations and laws concerning taking items from jet can, I put my crew in mortal danger. In an attempt to rescue several abandoned people, I came under legal fire, not from the pilot owning the can but from one of the opportunistic sport killers that frequent the border gates. When I returned, there were crew survivors that I could find. Shame on me for not knowing the implications of these new laws. These lives are my responsibility. Shame on me.
This changes the work of DSTON enough that we might no longer be able to rescue those abandoned. This is disheartening. I also include Concord on the wall of shame today for instituting such a draconian law. Again, authorities favor the "sport killers;" those who kill for relaxation, for fun, for the heck of it.
I need to talk to Dr. Nalthkh about this. I am at a loss as to what to do now. There doesn't seem to be any place for the non-violent in the community of the capsuleers. Perhaps its time to hang it up.

A rescue was attempted and failed today using the new directives passed down by the Development Office. A container transfer was made on a death can with more people than could fit in my frigate and then I dicked to await the expiration of the timer. When I returned the can was gone. I can only hope that they were rescued, but who knows. I'm not sure I can abide by these directives. The only thing I have managed to "rescue" using this method is a scorch bomb. At least no one will be using it.
On the brighter side, new production facilities are up and running that will provide our large centers with medical facilities with supplies of oxigen and electrolytes. If I may suggest, Mr Ston,
Perhaps you should consider another ship type. Some advanced frigates may be piloted without crews, and can also be fitted with cloaking systems to help evade hostility. Alternatively, warp stabilized and sturdy advanced transports could potentially provide a spacious cargo hold and resiliency enough to survive attacks. Perhaps some experimentation to this effect would be helpful? |

Greetings Scherezad and Mr. Em'asep
Your suggestions are well received and with gratitude and I am in the process of training necessary skills to pilot larger vessels with the capability of fast escape and cloak. Our biggest issue is that the majority of our rescues are in areas of heavy space traffic and any cloaking device will disengage in proximity of objects such as ships, gates and the very jet cans we are searching for. One has to be decloaked to perform a rescue and it is in the moments between the rescue and going to warp that one is vulnerable in any ship. What I need to really learn is to recognize a set trap. The last two rescues went well and I was not even targeted but the previous attempt was clearly a trap and I was caught off guard. I am loathe to put another crew at risk even though many keep volunteering to crew our rescue vessels knowing the new risks.
But...the work goes on in spite of it all.

Mr Ston,
There comes a point in every ship Captain's life when one realizes an awful truth - you are an arbiter of death, and from your judgement suspends the lives of all who depend upon you. You no doubt understand this well. Your task is impossible without good crew, crew who deserve long and healthy lives. You must risk them - consign them to death, at times - in the completion of your tasks. It is a dreadful calculus, one that guts the heart of anyone with feeling. And yet, if the task is truly needed, and the crew willing, then needs will force you to proceed.
Here, then, is your situation. The lives of your crew hang on one side of the scales and the lives of those you rescue hang on the other. It is a horrible calculation, and makes the most of us into monsters. But if there are any who has the strength of will and conviction of self required to endure this sustained trial it is you.
Good luck, Captain Momaki. I am happy to talk with you if you have need of it. |

It will take significant time, but you are right in that these skills are vital in these days of accelerated violence and useless destruction. Perhpas it is time to "arm" ourselves with instruments of violence prevention in a more direct and active way. I will begin to study, explore and train in these areas. Your counsel comes a timely juncture as the mistress of shameless violence Silas Vitalia has bountied DSTON in addition to the personal bounties against me.

Their repatriation took place through our Ation Center since they were all of Gallente, Intaki or Jim-Mei background. {114/12/07 875 Gallente Repatriated to Ation.(Intaki, Gallente, Jin-Mei)} When we crossed the border into the Federation, there was shouting and laughter.
After the loss of my last crew, a new crew of brave volunteers signed on to serve on the Mayflower. On our return trip we cam across two death cans. The first scanned and showed 79 survivors aboard. The crew begged to do the rescue then and there. I explained the risks. We agreed together to attempt the rescue. Lining up, we transported them aboard and warped out. Again, there was shouting and laughter. 79 people were rescued. Once returned to the temp center, I left the crew and the Mayflower and went back with a frigate. The second death can had 25 slaves and 20 freed slaves. There wasn't room for all. The 20 freed slaves insisted on staying behind and letting their slave brothers go first.
On the second trip back, I jump into Caldari space since I was close to the gate. The 20 begged, "don't take us back to the Empire, please!" I told them that we had a center in State territory a few jumps away. "Let us go there, we can help." Long story, short; they are now part of our staff at our Repatriation Center in Sirpalla. Frosting on the cake was a 13 million ISK confiscation of weapons from the vile and vulgar alliance I Whip my slaves back and forth.
Later in the day, we received a gift of assistance from a generous benefactor of DSTON in the form of a ship suitable for patrols. We christened her the DSS Generosity. We appreciate the gift, help, counsel, and encouragement from this individual.
Difficult days lie ahead and it is likely that many sacrifices will need to be made by many brave crew members and by those of us committed to the work. With bounty numbers adding up, we expect we will lose ships, crews and clones, but the work must not stop. We set our faces as flint toward our task.
