"What if they were your mother and father?" This was question posed to one of my young crewmen on board the DSS Mayflower while on patrol today. It was spoken by Crewchief Krik in response to the young and nervous ensign who questioned risking ship and crew to rescue merely two aged Elite slaves from a deathcan. This particular ensign recently finished his crew training after being rescued some time ago. He came aboard the Mayflower after the first one was destroyed. He replaced one of the computer techs who was lost in the incident. He was justifyably concerned and his question more than expected.
Chief Krik's response was enough to boulster the young man's spirits and calm his nerves.
Now to the interesting part... This young man was separated from his parents in a slaver raid on his farming settlement. He never knew what became of his family and he was an only child. Back at the temp center the reception crew saw to the needs of the 2 former Elite Slaves. They found them in OK condition, ragged from hard labor but healthy otherwise. In the course of the interview they told their story of how slavers raided their mining village and took them as slaves. They had been separated from their teenage son at the time of the raid. They never heard what happened to him. It was at this time that the reception crew had a sort of aha experience. The young ensign was called over to meet those he was unsure we should rescue.
I would love to say that they were his parents, but the odds would be long on that. However, they might as well be. Our young ensign wont let them out of his sight once he heard their story. In a sense a new family has formed to replace one lost. In a perfect world it would have actually been his parents. But this isn't a perfect world, is it? Close enough I say.

Emancipation--Matriculation--Repatriation In that order. This has been and continues to be our commitment. It is necessarily a slow process that recognizes that those rescued from slavery should not be placed in another kind of slavery bereft of provision, education, and resources to live productively. The matriculation process exists to prepare people for repatriation in such a way that repatriation is real and practical and not a romantic sort of event that then becomes a nightmare of unpreparedness. Life is chaotic enough even when we are well educated, well employed and healthy. We would not add to the normal chaos of life repatriation that was not first preceded by careful matriculation. While this has been articulated in greater detail in the past, the basics bear repeating now and then as a reminder.
Those rescued below enter now that careful process one day culminating in repatriation.

One of life's dangerous ironies is this: Those who believe and accept themselves as evil and act upon those motivations are nearly 100% right about themselves. The opposite, unfortunately, is not true. Those who believe themselves to be right and good and act upon those values may or may not be right about themselves. How can so many of us take up opposite causes in the name of what is good and right? We cannot all be correct.
So, what to do? Well for starters, always be in a state of humble self-examination. I might be wrong about this or I might be right. I may think this is a good deed but there will always be those who think the opposite while also believeing that they are doing good. To test ourselves is not moral relativism but rather moral humility. There is no danger for me to ask at the end of the day, "Was it good for me to rescue people from death cans?" If I humbly ask and the conviction is "yes." All the better am I prepared to continue the work the next day.

This week has been very rewarding and also very disheartening. I and my crew have managed to rescue 402 ex-slaves and 20 ex-elite slaves. Many were abandoned in multiple cans, making rescue difficult with so many potentially hostile ships near by. Fortunately, we were ignored and allowed to do this very necessary work.
Unfortunately, I do not have the record of the offending pilots due to not wanting to stay any longer than was necessary to get the people from the cans to safety as quickly as possible.
Shame on whoever those pilots were.

Even greater is the risk for a pilot such as Gaufres to do rescues without cloak or specialized vessels fitted for rescue work. We applaud the bravery of Gaufres and appreciate the fact that those he rescues would have otherwise died.
Two rescues are reported below. A while back, I mentioned the subject of remedial education. I state again as a reminder that remedial education is a large part of our Matriculation program. Our matriculation program, being focussed on those abandoned either to die in space or to languish in the squallid capsuleer slave markets, is focused on providing basic education prior to further training academically and vocationally after repatriation. Those repatriated from our centers are uniquely posed to enter society ready for higher education and training.

Id given your situation when you run your missions a thought, and i think many agree to that what you and your organisation is a shining example of something good... i lack the ships and the ability to do what i suggest, but i know many other can follow you in between in cloaked combat ships, as a escourt, the main thought behind is, that many that pry upon others dont want to take on dangerous oponents, and when your cloaked scourts show them self, it sends a signal... they might be there if they attack in the future, so regardless if their with you or not, the mere knowledge that they might be, since some have stated that they will support you and your orgnisation, can be a big deterrant for many to engage you in combat... atleast its thought !

The Disciples of Ston have almost no contact with baseline slave holders. The exception would be an ocassional reception of slaves categorized as "Mission Cargo." These would be slaves from baseline organizations contracting with capsuleers for transport. Our experience in these circumstances does nothing to soften our approach to slavery as a whole. We are abolitionist.
Everything about capsuleer involvement in the slave trade drives our mission and desire to see these suffering souls delivered from the brutality and greed of their capsuleer masters. Perhaps there is a tiny minority of capsuleers who might apply a modicum of mercy in their holding of slaves but yet, they are still slave holders. I have heard many religious people claim that they are but humble servants of God in their holding of slaves. This claim is very dissonant with me. It seems the height of hubris and arrogance for the religious man or woman to presume that God would need or require him or her to enslave another to reach that person for God.
We have observed that the primary reason for slavery is greed. Lust for power, control, dominance; these are the primary motivators. All races of capsuleers are guilty of involvement.

Among mortals there is a perennial struggle as one ages and eventually dies. When do the demands of dignity dictate that one reliquish the struggle to survive and instead depart with grace? It seems that at those times, dignity is in the eye the possessor in spite of the judgments of those around him.
I am watching a family in one our centers go through this right now. It is just too easy to judge or cirtically evaluate others when one has not yet gone through it. There is often tension between family and the medical professionals. Some are letting go while others hang on. Is it time to die? Is it time to live on? Eventually, the question is answered, but much struggle ensues until that moment.
154 people live to face that struggle, but hopefully not for many years to come.

The young crew member a while back who did not want to rescue the pair of former Elite Slaves in a death can has become a passionate and zealous advocate for all the people we rescue. When he began working for us, his focus was on working aboard our rescue ships. Now he has shifted focus to the care and well-being of our Matriculants. His adopted parents are well and they continue to be active together at the temp center. He told me recently, that he does not wish to go on to the larger centers but rather to stay and work with the recently rescued. We are glad to have him here.
On to Mr. Sam's comments:

Dear Mr. Sam,
The Electus Matari has been active in freeing slaves and repatriating them to the Republic for many many years. They have stood the test of time. In their typical quietness, they have not taken the bait of those critical of their work. If they were involved in this project then I am confident that those freed people are well cared for and well on their way to productive lives in the Republic. Although it has been a long while since we had any communication with either EM or Gradient, we used to talk regularly with Mr. Sadik. They are good folk.
Also: We have worked with Freedom Extension since the inception of our Matriculation Centers. If it were not for the hospitality of Freedom Extension, our Matriculation Centers in Empire space would only be a pipe dream. The combination of EM and Freedom Extension gives me sufficient confidence that those recently freed and repatriated are in good hands.

DSTON considers it scandalous each and every time people are jet canned into space and left to die. The Scandal is the disregard of these human lives by capsuleer pilots. It is this scandal that we work against each and every day. Outside of that, I am not sure what other scandal there may be.
These 32 were rescued after a slow couple days. Patrols were run but it was quiet out there in spite of heavy traffic. We were glad to be at the location in time to save these. We are also excited to report that another group has been safely brought to our Sirrpala center.

A recent patrol resulted in the rescue of 10 former Elite slaves. They were heavy machinery operators in a deep mining facility. They do not know how they became owned by a capsuleer. It just happened. Things that happen to us are usually explained at least at some level. Slave holders do not necessarily feel an obligation to explain anything to their slaves. These slaves labored for their owner until they were not needed, then they were offered up for sale. That's it.
Millions of people are in this situation all across our cluster. They know nothing of the grand political and religious debates that surround us. They are slaves; a disposable commodity as far as they are treated.
These are the people we seek to help.

Uh-huh. Alright, since you asked, I'll tell you: Slaves are illegal in the Caldari State. That's the scandal. See, the nature of our alliance is that we don't break each others' rules. We don't try to import/export slaves from the State and they don't go messing with our slaves in the Empire. Pretty simple... until someone breaks that deal.
If someone was trying to import slaves into the State, they're breaking that deal, and have thus made enemies out of both of our governments.
Speaking of legal issues... I recently picked up 5 x slavers and 50 x slaves that I'd like to hand over to you, but can't due to contract restrictions (see above). Why would an Amarrian loyalist do such a thing, you ask? Because they're not ours - they're survivors from a Blood Raider installation that I blew the unholy crap out of recently, meaning that as far I can tell these are Blood Raider slavers (and thus enemies of the Empire) and the innocent people that they had captured (and therefore not criminals or POWs and thus not candidates for slavery under our laws).
I also picked up some slaver hounds but I'm keeping those because they're cute.
If you have any pilots in Ammatar space I can arrange a direct exchange at some point in the future if you like. EvE Forum Bingo |

Yes. Capsuleers are notorious deal breakers because they tend look at themselves as above that law. You may personally practice a high level of loyalty and ideological consistency but most capsuleers do not. There shouldn't be any slaves for sale in Caldari, Gallente, and Republic space and yet there are many for sale in capsuleer markets. That is a scandal. If the SCC immediately banned the sale and purchase of slaves within territories where slavery was illegal, the capsuleer slave trade would be dramatically curtailed. Unfortunately the strict neutrality agreement of the SCC makes that nearly impossible. It is ironic that the Minmatar Republic insisted on that particular clause which has become a de facto guarantee of continued slave trading among capsuleers everywhere. That is scandalous!
We appreciate your efforts to see to the care of those you have rescued. Dr. Nalthkh generally hangs around Edmalbrurdus and so is close to the Mandate. I'll suggest he puts you on watch to look for an opportunity for transfer.

I recently read an exchange something like that on this fine Galnet forum. It occurred to me that so often we seek to exalt ourselves above others and try convince others of our standing and status. When we do so we miss the greatest secret of elevating yourself. Ready? To elevate yourself, serve the lowly. Be kind and do good to those who can never repay you. Kneel to lend a hand to the weak, the sick, the impoverished, the slave. In so doing, you will elevate your own soul to heights that can never be reached through self-exaltation.
I never feel higher than when I am serving those we rescue. What good is it if you only help those who can help you back? What does that really make you, afterall? If you want to soar high, you must first find yourself in the position of one willing to stoop low.
Now if someone comes along and says to you, "you are my lesser." Don't argue the point, just go and prove otherwise.

Justify what you are doing! or... Justify what you have done? These are two sentiments oft heard on these forumns and part of the lively debate that characterizes this place. Many times, I sure we all feel that these charges are thrown around with more malice than a hungar to learn. But, the call to justify what we do is a legitimate one. Anything we do that impact the lives of others should have a justification. Either our works should be vindicated, condemned, or corrected, or maybe even a combination. From time to time we all ought to be asking ourselves these to questions. Are my past actions justified? Am I jstified in continuing what I am doing. My perspective, of course, is from the point of view of non-violence, peace, freedom, and mercy. I should not assume, however that just because an action seems good, that it is good. I ought to learn the art of self-examination from my detractors. To simply say, "that's none of your business," does help me become more accountable. Again, from my perspective, I believe this is especially true of violent behavior and actions. The requisite of any military act ought to be the strictest of all. The most rogorous of examinations ought to be made even when the demand for quick action is called for. Unfortunately, the very nature of violence tends toward unexamined reaction. So, let the more thoughtful among you who are not pacifists, be the ones who lead in the careful justification taking into account all who may be impacted.

Two human qualities that ought never to combine: Arrogance and Authority. Unfortunately, they are often in horrific combination with each other. That is, after-all, how tyranny is born. On the other hand there is a beautiful combination of humility and leadership when combined skill and intelligence that can generate people capable of leading society to true greatness in peace, prosperity and benevolence. The problem is that as soon as power is realized, it often corrupts the better part of our natures and benevolent leaders can become evil.
Have you ever heard an employee criticize the boss with these words, "If I were boss, I could do so much better...?" Perhaps even some of us have uttered those words at one time. Forbid that such an attitude be allowed into the chamber of leadership. Let us seek among us men and women, unassuming yet full of wisdom and wit; humble yet unafraid to lead in that humility; brave, but mindful of the cost to others when bravery must be exercised. When found, may these become our leaders and may we follow not with disconnection, not with an assumption that they will make no mistakes, but with a commitment to add our strengths, skills and aptitudes to enable the whole to prosper.

I apologize for the lack of pilot info on the first listing below. We had focussed hard on trying to position our rescue ship within range of two death cans so that we could simultaneously rescue both groups. It wasn't possible so we had to rescue the greater number first and then return after the counter expired. All were successfully rescued and an additional blue can was discovered upon our return to the scene. Unfortunately in the focus of the moment, I didn't record the owner of the first can.
I am encouraged to note that there seems to be a growing number of capsuleer pilots becoming more interested in peace and humanitarianism. Perhaps the better potential of the capsuleer movement can be realized afterall.

Why do the powerful so fear the small man, the ordinary man, the average citizen? Why does the paranoia of the powerful seek to suppress this "menace?" Is it because the average person has the capacity to accurately judge the moral quality of those in power? I think perhaps it is the amazing perceptivity of the masses that those in power fear most. History shows that this perceptivity is often muted by propaganda or even laziness. But, sometimes it can spontaneously move and change the course of a nation and people. This is what those in power fear. There are also those in power with the humility and wisdom to listen for, anticipate, and respond to the collective perceptiveness of the people. These are those who know that their power is a gift to be used for good and higher purposes; for true leadership.

Truly one of the darkest lies that we tell ourselves is, "It is someone else's fault." "If so and so would just..." We cloak the responsibility that we have for the troubles we cause for ourselves in blame of others. Most struggle with this from time to time and some more than others. However, having a positive and good life calling that keeps you doing good things consistently through your life can help you avoid the blame trap. It can also help you tremendously when on the receiving end of blame.
Of course there is a place and a time to hold others responsible and sometimes blame needs to be assigned. But, as individuals we need to exercise a good measure of self-examination before blaming others for our own mistakes.
The Disciples of Ston wish a peaceful resolution to the current turmoil within the Caldari Sate. Our hearts ache at the prospect of many people being killed; not just soldiers but innocent citizens just trying to live and go about their business. We hope that the leadership among the both the Provists and those in opposition will be wise and restrained in reactions and actions.

Hmm? Well, we will check into that claim. The contract was for biomass and has yet to be picked up from the contracted station in Badivefi in Khanid space. We shall have our med labs conduct tests to determine if the biomass is derived from any source other than the standard planktonic colonies. If it is non-standard biomass it will not be used for livestock production. However, innocent until proven guilty.

One should always be careful of accepting gifts from "charitable" capsuleers. Perhaps we could also just ask Mr. Areth. What is the derivation of this biomass, sir? Wall of Shame: 115.02.05 18:46 Korwini 1 freedom fighter, 5 slavers, 5 hounds, 10 freed slaves, 10 former slaves

The recycled remains of deceased enemy crew, capsuleers, bled captures and those deemed too weak for the holy bleeding racks.
I fail to see how this should be an issue seeing as the paste has already entered the markets in and around Khanid space with very profitable results, something about better texture and richer flavour than the standard bland paste or so ive heard.
