We somewhat get used to the smaller numbers we see abandoned in deathcans. This is not good. We should be appalled each time we witness the flagrant disregard of life whether it is one life or many. We feel a tension, because we need to be removed enough to do our jobs and get the rescues done. We need to be connected enough to fuel our values and passion for the lives we rescue.
That said, we never get used to the rare situation where a death can contains more than a thousand people. The Mayflower has a passenger capcity of 875 people. In the rescue reported below, there was no time to consult over who would be rescued and who would be left. The first rescue was to capacity. Krik and I made the decision not to wait out the agro timer but to return immediately for the other 310 while the emergency med staff dealt with the 875 trumatized first group. We knew we could warp back in cloaked right into transport range and then activate the jump gate before being targetted, if all went according to plan. It did.
SInce we had only time to tell the remaining 310 that we would be back for them and no time to brief them on how long it would take we took the risk to go back while on the timer. We also had suspicions that the can was about to expire. Losing 310 people was not an option and the whole crew was behind the calculated risk. This time it paid off. The temp center in Caldari space will be very busy the next few days with this larger group.

"Universal Translator ON!" Back in the dusty corners of history when activation switches were manual, I would have placed a peice of tape over the switch to keep it on and to prevent it from being turned off. "Universal translator on" means that I do not shut out others of differing culture, religion, race or ethnicity when communicating with my own ethnicity, etc. I do not use code that is intended to value one over another.
Lately, I have noted an increase of verbal traffic designed to create ethnic and racial disparity; to say to one, "you are an insider, a friend," and to another, "you are an outsider; I tolerate you at best." This is not leading to peace and mutual understanding. I am not just talking about the obvious in your face race hate that is shovelled by some, but also the more subtle, culturally based communication that belongs in private conversation, not the public forum. In the public forum, we ought to have the universal translator on at all times.
Turn on your universal translators and put the tape over the switch!

Mr. Momaki,
While I agree a little with your sentiment about translators, I must point out that some words and phrases do not have suitable substitutes in (some) other languages. In some situations, the miscommunications created by having them translated anyway could lead to more disparity, not less. I've seen it happen.
Edit: Moderation is key, of course. Very few man-made rules, if any, are without exceptions. Nightmares - A short story by Ch+¬ Biko |

Thank you for the comment Mr. Biko. I agree with what you are saying, and I am sorry I wasn't clear about the fact that I was referring specifically to public discourse where un-translated terms are used as pejoratives in conflicted interactions. An example is the use of racial designations that identify those outside of our own race as inferior or undesirable. There are a range of subtleties in how this is done from outright bigotry to slight patronization. A good universal translator is preprogramed to avoid such terminology whenever possible and should only be overridden when absolutely necessary.

What if this leads to a reform in Amarrian religious society? Without reading too much in to the short news quip, it does spark some hope that a new generation of forward thinking leaders may counter the recent draconian approaches of House Sarum.
If students are encouraged, required, allowed to think in their religious studies instead of merely regurgitating, then perhaps a new generation of theologian will discover a theology that supports abolition and supports peace.
Think, student, think!

The cowardice of terrorism has once again occurred. May those who seek mutual understanding and cooperation not be deterred by such acts and the aftermath of anger, blame, chest thumping, etc. Peace always necessitates the path of self-control following the waste of violence. Grief need not lead to the kind of anger that furthers violence and stifles peace.
Instead, may many brave leaders arise to calm the people and refocus all toward the goal of a peaceful and productive society. Let us mute the voices of hate, prejudice, and bitterness that rise at these times. Find and converse with those of reason and restraint.

DSTON thanks and commends Jack Jomar, Grideris, Anslo, and Liuni Kalthis for speaking words of restraint and encouraging peace in a dangerous situation. I read the news this morning of the standoff yesterday and was, besides concerned, pleased that capsuleer pilots were acting responsibly and positively. While others were trying to incite the first shot, these four were pleading for calm and order. They should be commended as agents of peace. DSTON bows in appreciation.
The prospect of the Republic and Federation in military conflict is mind boggling. How could we be so naive that the very goal and hope of the terrorist is fallen in to so easily? This act of terror will be defeated if and only if the Federation and Republic remain friends and act like friends. This is not a time for rash behavior.
The rest of yesterday's and early today's rescues are reported below.

If given a choice, how and where would you chose to die. Eggers, as we are sometimes called, have forgotten how to think about this question. Our non-clone crew members think about it all the time and while they may not want to die in a ship explosion in space, they take the risk that it will happen this way. My crew chief told me yesterday, that he hopes he dies in the act of doing good. That's probably the best any one of us could say.

The Mayflower was attacked by one Jeric Saris while on a rescue op involving two deathcans just outside of transport range of each other. Scans indicated injured people aboard one of the cans. We determined we could rescue both with minimal damage even if targetted. We were targetted and shots were fired at us, but no measurable damage was taken. We were able to activate a gate jump and escape into State territory where we proceeded under cloak to a safe facility. 13 injured people are now tended to in Caldari hospital facility. They'll make it.
The pilot who fired upon us did so legally under the current Concord regulations regarding the looting of jetcans. Even when those jetcans contain abandoned people who will die within 2 hours if not rescued, it is legal to attack anyone attempting a rescue. A good pilot that we know lost crew and vessel yesterday in a similar situation. We commend her bravery and hope that the memory of her crew will live on in those she rescued.
We live in sad times. Weapons abound to hurt and mame others, to strike and injure. Weapons of technology, weapons of spite and hate vented through angry speech, weapons of unforgiveness waiting to expode and wreak their havoc. Such are the times in which we live. There are lights among us though; those who steal out of the darkness moments of compassion even toward their enemies. We strain our eyes to see these flickers and rejoice when they flash occasionally on the horizon.

I apologise that the usual specific attribution under the wall of shame is missing today. The three-can rescue was complex and so we had to make just a general accounting.
What is a mystery is the large number of Marines who happened to be in the same transport as the group of 86 slaves and 9 slavers. We will try to sort out the details today and tomorrow.
We continue to hold out in our hearts the Minmatar people who grieve the loss of those killed in the terrorist attack and now watch over their loved Ray of Matar back home with her people. We only wish there was some way we could help. Our hearts feel for you. We also hold out both the Gallente and the Minmatar leaders that they may be wise and gracious in these difficult days.

Being liked... When I observe the community of people we rescue, I find that being liked has to do with very basic things like being friendly with and interested in others when you are with them. It happens in an unassuming way and is so simple and obvious.
When I observe the capsuleer community in contrast, I see a different dynamic and it makes me take a harder look at myself. Like many, I can easily see the weaknesses in others and miss the fact that I have the very same problems I am quick to criticize in others. So, do we capsuleers as a group really have a greater-than-is-healthy need to be validated? Rather than accepting the simple ways of being liked, do we go beyond the veil in our attempt at self-validation? Yikes, who wants to be that way? But, maybe I am and maybe you are.

Krik and I had time for a cup of coffee in the Leaning Tower Cafe while the cargo doors and latches of the Mayflower are being re-greased and checked. I told Krik that the last name "sinabbi" sounded familiar. "Where have I heard that before?" I asked him. "Its one of those creapy things you hear when passing through an incursion zone," Krik replied. "That's right." I've always wondered what that means.
Our current rescue strategies are placing most of our newly rescued people on the Caldari side of the border. We have found this to be a safer method, especially for multiple can rescues. As a result, we are adjusting our staff for the time being. I have been meaning to contact a Concord representative regarding the issue of our growing number of slaver detainees. Perhaps this week sometime.

During a maintenance inspection our chief engineer caught a "whiff" of coolant. Closer inspection revealed a failed flange gasket in our CPU cooling system. The Mayflower burns her computers hot due to the near constant use of cloak. We cannot afford for those systems to fail. The flange seal was repaired and we are back on patrol.
In spite of the extensive knowledge that a capsuerr possesses, the pool of knowledge to maintain and keep even the smallest fleet of ships up and running, is extensive beyond any one person. Spending even five minutes with one of my engineering crew reminds me of how limited is my "superior" knowledge. I would never have known the smell of a "whiff" of coolant. I'm grateful for engineers with the experience and noses to catch these things.

Gladius, ,Feanor, Verin, Bowman and May Cotton, and Halfred and Bell Greenhand, greeted Tahrmal and me with the words, "You need to meet the additional Elders." Our breath left us when they took us to what we thought was going to be a conference room but was more like an auditorium. Over a 150 people were there; men, women, Matari mostly, but Gallente, Caldari, and even Amarrian and Khanid. All of them were chosen representatives of a growing community of people who used to be slaves. While this growing community waits to be repatriated and settle in to the community at large, they are led and helped by people of merit, wisdom, and compassion. Our core group of Elders continues to share power and influence while serving the whole community with selfless devotion.
We left the meeting with renewed confidence that when we rescue someone, or a group of former slaves is given to our care, they enter a community where they will not fall through the cracks.

It doesn't happen that often, but now and then, the timing is such that, during a rescue, we will witness a pilot in the act of dumping passengers in a deathcan. In principle, I know that all these occurences are the same, but when I see it happening, the experience is different. What is the pilot thinking the moment she gives the command to jettison 50 people to near certain death? This particular pilot is in the employ of The Scope. Said to be the chief news agency of our cluster, will it get reported in their news service? "Scope Employee Dumps 50 people to Their Death." It boggles my mind how the economies of scale have created a justification for killing, callous and unmitigated.
I like the Leaning Tower Cafe, because it is one of the few greasy spoons left that is sit down with real waiters and waitresses. Today, Galdius, Krik, and myself sat down for coffee while the Mayflower was undergoing post flight inspection. It was slow in the cafe so the waitress had time to join the conversation. She is an older (59-61?) woman, Deteis. She heard us talkiing about Karin Midular. We've been here enough now, that she knows our faces and the basics of our work. She said, "I feel for the Matari people; to see a loved one suffer and fear losing her is a great sorrow." "Its too bad our peoples can't be friends, you know, on the big scale of things" Yes, we all agreed. She refilled our coffees and resumed wiping the counter.

GÇ£I sensed I was in trouble, so when I had the opportunity, I slipped in with a group of slaves heading for a debarkation bay in the station.GÇ¥ This was part of the story told us by one of the people we rescued today from the death can. Now and then, we rescue people other than slaves and their stories are often interesting. This manGÇÖs story is quite intriguing. He was picked up with a group of 70 others, 50 former slaves and 20 former Elite Slaves. When we docked in the temp center in Caldari space, this man identified himself as a member of a diplomatic consular mission from the Republic that was in the Empire to consult with members of the Amarrian government. The mission was regarding recent issues with the Caldari State and possible retaliatory terrorist activity against the Federation after the Caldari Prime incident. Why? we asked. "Some within our government are trying to ease tensions with the Federation over the Midular situation. If we could make efforts to prevent terrorism aimed at the Federation, we could make headway in this through Amarrian diplomatic channels." This Minmatar Emissary claims that talks began going badly and that some of their group disappeared. Fearing for his life, he managed to stow away aboard a capsuleer transport heading out of the Empire. ThatGÇÖs when he ended up dumped along with the others.
At this point we have not verified anything this man has told us and we are not sure that he is who he claims to be. I struggle with the plausibility of his story. We will try to find out more in days to come. We do know that he desperately pleaded with us to get him out of Caldari space. We told him that he was safe at out temp center and that no harm would come to him. However, he begged to be taken elsewhere. GÇ£If I am discovered in the State, I will be killed.GÇ¥ He was nothing if but sincere. I told him, that later today, I would arrange to transport him to our office in Yulai. He was comfortable with that. As I post this, I am getting the DSS Cab ready for a trip to Yulai.

Thanks Edaine. It is difficult to concentrate on my duties knowing that somewhere someone is plotting significant violence. 91 people have been rescue since I returned after Cobbs was abducted. I fear the worst for him. Poor man. I don't think he will be able to withstand the methods that will be used to extract the information they want.
I hope, profoundly hope that Operation Whitehall is able to decypher the information need in time to deploy the necessary force to stop Sky. I can't believe I am hearing myself say that I hope "force" is deployed. I feel sifted.
We have managed to remove and deactivate all our vessels of the bugging devices planted by Northern Coalition operatives. The data recovered confirms that they were both receive and transmitting information. They knew exactly when and where to nab Cobbs. They also know that we would not be armed or capable of escape.

And they are in demand"
We are anxious about manyt hings these days. The fate of Mr. Cobbs occupies much of my thought. I do wonder how he was/is being treated by Ms. Sky. We also have our own prisoner to tend. It tests our resolve to remain true to ourselves. People often begin a sentence with these words, "It is war..." Often follows are justifications of the worst kind. This we cannot do. This prisoner must not be harmed but treated with humanity. We have asked him to help us prevent the violence planned by Ms. Sky.
I am anxious for Operation Whitehall. There are few more competant than Ms. Scherezad and her team. They will figure this out, I hope, in time.

Two more groups of slavers, hounds and slaves enroute to Joint Harvest plantations out side of Empire space were rescued yesterday and today. Aparrently there is a feeling among some corporate managers that sentiment is changing, shifting back toward an aggressive slavery stance. These groups were to be part of an ongoing slave labor presence illegally established outside of Empire borders. We will see to it that these never have to see those plantations and that their handlers, though criminals, will be treated humanely and protected from lethal reprisals for getting caught.
We feel like we have been trudging through the muck and mud of this whole affair regarding Marlona Sky. The news is not good. It appears that there is a real Nyx and that she does have it. It pains my heart to find myself appealing to violent people to stop her. There are times when in the pursuit of peace, inner peace must be suspended.

We are very anxiously waiting for word from the team working on Operation Whitehall. From early conversations, we think we may be running out of time before Pilot Sky attempts her plan. There is little I can do but wait and continue patrols. We continue to see normal trade traffic and the usual number of those dumped and abandoned to die. We do what we can.

I guess there is nothing for it but to stay busy doing rescue work while waiting for information from Whitehall. Two rescues reported below.
