In times of war, racial and ethnic hatreds are intensified. The history of armed conflict shows that without exception war has generated the most egregious acts often justified with the twisted logic of racism and/or ethnocentrism. Racial, cultural, and ethnic terminology once used to celebrate diversity and acknowledge unique differences becomes a tool to divide, denegrate and even obliterate other races and ethnic groups. Often the justification for these horrible acts is the preservation of one's own race or ethnic group. The slope is steep and slippery.
I continue to be troubled by the frequent use of racial and ethnic epitaphs used in anger. Racial and ethnic terminology has its place for sure. Words are used to describe our race, nation, and culture. But the moment we take those terms and mix them with anger, spite or hatred, we have crossed a line. The moment we attach a perjorative to the front or back of a racial designation, we have crossed the line. Throughout history, whole peoples have been scapegoated that way and then all justification is given for the most henious acts against them.
If you are angry at an individual, go ahead and express that anger. But, do not extend that anger into racism. Have the wisdom hold back those words that might venture across the line.

It was a relatively slow day on patrol, but we did get to be involved in one of those very good things that comes along from time to time that helps us understand that there are a number of good people among the ranks of capsuleers. DSTON received a number of refugees from a capsuleer pilot who rescued them from a difficult situation. We are helping to place these refugees in established communities. I hope to bring some reports about this in days to come. For now, I want to say thanks to the Pilot who took the time to help these people and to help us come alongside. She has our gratitude.

This report is given in great sorrow for the loss of the Mayflower crew including my good friend and crew chief Krik. A multi death can rescue was being attempted and barely before able to activate gate for escape, we were destroyed by 1400 mm rounds. Upon return, only 50 former slaves and 26 freed slaves were rescued. All other hands were lost or possible picked up by others. We are not sure.
We can re-equip another Crane but the loss of my crew is most bitter and the loss of some of those we tried to rescue is bitter. It is a most difficult day for all of us. The 76 we were able to rescue are being tended to by center staff. I will be off to re-fit another crane and our patrols will continue. Services for Krik and the other crew will be conducted.

Immediately after the loss of the Mayflower, the DSS Assist was ferried from Luminaire to our patrol area. Her crew is now my patrol crew and will remain so either permanently or until we replace the Mayflower. Patrols continue as indicated below.
Such an event can eclipse all else for a period of time as grief tends to do. However, I did want to acknolwedge that some of the last duties of the Mayflower crew involved covert work to bring refugees safely to new homes in Edmalbrudus in the Republic, Ation in the Federation and Kaaputenen in the State. These groups of 37, 41, and 5 respectively were brought to join established communities. Their rescuer was the Pilot Captain Jared Haywire. In this case the refugees were mixed races and had been taken captive and enslaved by pirates. This accounts for their desire to settle in different soveriegnties. Ms. Haywire gave us unprecedented assitance in this matter in that we were able to have a full manifest of names and even leadership organization within the groups before taking them in as Matriculants. It took time and selflessness on her part and we do respect that.
The families of the Mayflower crew can be proud that some of the last duties of their loved ones involved seeing that these refugees made it to new homes. I look forward now to serving with the crew of the DSS Assist and continuing the work.

I am making this entry from on board the DSS Safe Harbor deployed in Haatomo near the Caldari Const facility. Tensions are such that I fear there may be violence. If there would just be as great a taste for peace as there is for war, all of this could end in a better way. There are many who would like to Heth executed or killed. Personally, I believe he is mentally ill and needs treatment. I hope against hope for a peaceful resolve here, but we must try. Already there have been skirmishes, but no deaths yet that I can see.
DSTON opposes the death penalty and we make no secret of that. Even when unpopular, we offer asylum to anyone who may fear death reprisals. Even in Heth's case, we would provide that and the offer is open to him. We would see that he receive the proper treatment, counseling, and be kept safe. But he must abandon the insane bent to self-destructive violence.
Some pilots in this system are becoming trigger happy. They are looking for a fight. This is not good.

Poway Doe has taken over as temporary crew chief and is pulling double duty between the DSS Assist and the DSS Safe Harbor. She is efficient and well liked among the crews. She has requested that the assignment be temporary as she prefers duty on board the Safe Harbor alone. We will try to accomodate that as quickly as we can as we search for a new crew chief to replace Commander Krik.
I had forgotten to mention earlier the great joy that Iofi, my main computer engineer was not aboard the Mayflower when she was destroyed and is back from leave and pulling duty aboard the Assist.
I honestly do not guite know how to describe yesterday's experience in Haatomo. "Strange" is a good word perhaps. There is an "altered personality" about the whole thing surrounding Heth. You see it everywhere there is interaction on the subject. It is ... strange.

The waitress at the "Leaning Tower" asked me this question as she set the cup of coffee on the table in front of me; "What is happening to our government." I answered, "My dear, I wish I had an answer for. I feel confusion too." I invited her to sit and visit for a while. It was just me, her and Iorfi. We tossed around a lot of questions but came up with few answers. Maybe the best conclusion we came to was this: When it is hard to know where our loyalties should lie, the best thing to do is to just try hard to be a good citizen in whatever we do and wherever we are. Making coffee, rescuing people from death cans. Whatever... do it well, faithfully, unselfishly.

"I guess I could see the writing on the wall." That is what Iorfi said when I asked him to become the new crew chief for rescue operations. Iorfi second engineer will take over his spot and he will begin duties shortly.
I managed to find a small coffee shop open in the Caldari Constructions station in Haatomo. It is distressing to see the Caldari people thrown into division and strife over the situation with Heth. Anger is a part of our make up, but it does not have to lead to a spirit of vengeance. Even now, as I write this, there is an outflow of vitriolic words on the local com channel in Haatomo. Caldari hating Caldari, Caldari hating Gallente. "Death to Heth" "Doomsday the Gallente" Capsuleers discuss a massive scope of violence and think of the average planetery citizen as so much fodder.
How can a person stand to live with so much hate inside. I sincerely believe that hatred has generated a psychosis in many.

I feel so sleepy, so sleepy. I need to speak to my clone contractor about the recent function or lack thereof of my clone body. I have been prone to spontaneous loss of consciousness recently. I was in my pod yesterday on a short trip through high security space. I was not using autopilot. I lost consciousness during a gate jump. Next I knew, I'm emerging from a clone vat. I may need to plan some time off in the near future. I briefed my crew on this as it presents a danger should this happen on operations. In spite of this, rescue patrols continue. Below is reported the last 16 hours patrol results.

It is ironic... I recall in the education of my youth, seeing a historical Holo on a partizan lead coup against a ruthless dictator who had oppressed the people and kept them in a brutal state of war with neighboring countries. The holo showed pictures of the partizans hanging the brused and bloodied body of the man along with his mistress. It was a ghastly sight.
Fast forward to today. The pernicious blood lust now present among capsuleers drips everywhere as people salivate over the prospect of Tibus Heth being killed. "Kill the man!" "We'll all get drunk when we see his corpse!" This is base and vile and is the same core of degradation that led Heth to his current trouble. There is the irony.
I am not so naive to think that the death penalty will not be sought in this case or more likely, that he may die in battle or in a fire fight aboard the CC station, but the blood lust betrays savagery, not dignity on the part of those who oppose his regime.
Those who wish to usher in a better way for the Caldari people should show that better way right now in the manner that justice is pursued and in the self-control of anger and violence. Otherwise you are no different than the one you oppose.

Stations packed with millions of slaves in such conditions that defy words. I responded to a recent invitation to examine for myself the situation on every Khanid Transport station in Khanid territory. I read the sort of detached discussions on slavery that go on in this setting and wonder almost outloud, "Have any of these people ever been to a Khanid Transport slave market?" Have any of the multitude of slavery experts seen the masses of humanity for sale in these places?
What utter decay in the soul of a society would justify what happens in these places? The capsuleer community has the collective resources to address this humanitarian catastrophy but isn't. History will not look kindly upon our excuses to turn a blind eye to suffering humanity in these slave markets.

Clear all content That is a command option in local com channels that I have been using much more lately. The violent and racist pitch of words has gotten worse these days and there is a lack of civility. From the abundance of the heart comes the communication of the mouth. And what we expose ourselves to will eventually impact our disposition and thinking. Most of what comes across local communications is rather inert, but some of it is quite hateful. While I have to keep my local com open for security reasons, I do not have to nor should I expose myself to all the verbage.
I continue to occassionally visit Haatomo between patrol duties. Things are rather quiet there. I would expect that Mr. Heth knows the capsuleer tendency to easily lose excitment once nothing happens for a while. I suspect he is patient enough to wait out the initial capsuleer fervor before making his next move.

We provide a number of diverse educational opportunities for Matriculants based on what is available and what interests them. Tranditional university, advanced tech Schools, even military schools are on our list of institutions available for our Matriculoants. It is not our decision or choice.
In our history, we have honored the specific desires of Matriculants. We have even helped them go places and with people that we considered bad choices. One Matriculant chose Nation. Another two chose to go with known pro-slavery capsuleers. Various others have gone different routes.
Do they know my views? Certainly, but they are also free to access the views of those who are critical of my philosophy and values. This forumn as well as others are accessible to the Matriculant communities. Thank you Mr. Biko for your story. Isn't it true indeed that the baker walks a fine line requiring great wisdom, restraint, and insight?
In the rescue reported below, we happened to be on patrol when the second of the two cans was jettisoned. It is a curious things to see this and it happens from time to time. Slavers are not illegal cargo. Sometimes they are jettisoned together with slaves probably because it is convenient to do so. But, to make a willful separation and take the time to eject the slaves then the slavers...?
We've spoken to the Slavers involved and they are bewildered and not able to give us an answer as to what happened.
Upon hearing the news of happenings in Haatomo, DSTON has deployed a small, unarmed transport to Otsasai. We do so because just as we rescue and protect the lives of slavers, we offer the same to any who wish to escape death reprisals in the current Caldari conflict. I despise what slavers do, but I do not despise their lives. I despise the act of violence that the murderer commits, but I do not kill him in reprisal. Justice is broader than retribution. Justice when fulfilled transforms the whole culture and makes it better. I think we are missing that somehow.

I am not much of a pilot nor do I aspire to be. So yesterday's experience was at the same time terrifying and exhilarating. I was on my way to Sasta to receive a group of refugees into our care when I happened upon a jet-can in Jark. I checked it and there were three people on board. I was alone, piloting an unarmed rookie frigate the DSS Minimal. I made the decision to try and rescue those on board. It is hard to describe how anxious and unnerved I felt. I decided to align to the Sasta gate and transport the passengers just as I warped. I thought I had, when I discovered that my safety was still on and nothing was in my cargo bay. I went back to the can and tried again with the safety partially disabled. Three people were rescued. It didn't occur to me until much later that I hadn't recorded the pilot or the time stamp. My hands must have shook for two hours afterwards. I'm an educator, not a pilot. The only space flight I do is what I absolutely need to do.

[115.06.22] 167,589 former slaves from the Khanid Kingdom recieved from the "Khanid Abolition Fund."
For some time, NUVOS has indicated that the Khanid Abolition Fund was going to be delivering a sizable number of refugees into our care. This was transacted yesterday. We have been informed that more will be arriving this week prior to the start of our re-visioning retreat on Saiso. This brings me to the crux of our agenda at this retreat. Both Dr. Nalthkh and myself have made an extensive tour of the humanitarian crisis that is the slaves markets of the Khanid Kingdom. There is a level of degradation and suffering in these markets like none most people will ever see or even imagine.
There is a certain pessimism that follows me into this retreat that I regret. Problem is, I can't just deny its existence. It is a pessimism that says that the problem is too great for our resources and that others will not be interested in helping. This may be true, but shouldn't we try?
Regular patrols will continue up until the first day of the retreat.

Halfred Greenhand will be presenting and facilitating discussion on a symposium dealing with the infrastructure issues involved in the greater numbers of Matriculants coming in through the Khanid Slavery Abolition Fund (KSAF). Its always something, isn't it? Whenever there is preparation to be away, something mucks it up. It must have been a sensor malfunction but the most bizzare thing happened on patrol early this morning. Our ship struck an animal carcass floating in space. It was some sort of medium sized hoofed herbivore. It damaged part of the exterior sensor array and repairs will need to be made in short order. That means that part of my day has to be spent in scouring for parts. Ugh! How did an animal carcass end up out there in the first place?
