At least I think it is over... or if not, it should soon be over. So... *ahem*... who "won" ? Not like you have to count votes or anything, they were expressed "electronically", so as soon as the polls are closed, the results should be ready.

EDIT: I guess the reason they are making is wait, is to make sure everything is as it's supposed to be. Though I do agree that it's very simple to just pull the data(Just make a query which groups all votes, and just take the first 9 candidates, ordered by the sum of all votes).
But CCP is a corporation. Corporations are by definition, ineffective at small tasks like this
Xhagen is at a loss for words trying to explain how so few people voted and rationalize why CCP should waste their time doing this again. I'm going to guess no more than 30% of the players voted. ___ Eve Players are not very smart. Support Killmail Overhaul

Wednesday to release the results isn't too bad. They will need to be preparing their press-releases as well, as I'm sure it won't simply be a matter of releasing the results, but also sending information out to the RL press about the winning candidates.

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that technically speaking, there was no need to come with all this PR crap & relying on "representatives" to start with.
If CCP was genuinely interested in consulting player's opinions about specific subjects, they just had to implement polls. Then that only concerned players vote is no different than what happens in any democracy.
Hence the bottom line is, if you make things complicated when it could all remain crystal simple, there's a good reason for it which might have very little to do with the substance of the matter supposedly at hand...

The big flaw in this is that most of the people who play this game don't fully understand a lot of the mechanics and reasons behind changes. So you would get a stampede of idiots voting to ban high-sec suicide ganking and other trivial crap. Even though hypothetically if this was the case, I imagine CCP would obviously only put issues they want to a poll. Which isn't much better than the current state, and doesn't provide any real sensible way to discuss and develop ideas.
Your idea of how they should poll is like abolishing local and state governments and have a only a federal government run and entire country.

To those who have voted for me: Thank you!
To those who voted for other candidates: Thank you!
To those who think this won't work: Shame on you for not having confidence in anyone, including yourself! Just as with PvP, if you don't try you can't succeed; if you go into a fight thinking you will lose you will do just that.

Yeah. I would be very much surprised though, if 30% voted. It's hard to say really.
There could easily be a 30% turnout, but I have my doubts.
As earlier stated in another thread, I will be positively surprised if we get a 15-20% turnout. 10 sounds fairly reasonable. But if all major alliances vote, we could probably reach 20%

Then I assume you were one of those who abstained anyway. Don't always try to find the bad things. Truth is I was surprised by this initiative and I think it's a very interesting and good one. Don't think any other MMO has this tbh, but maybe I'm too pessimistic so I'd be glad if you could prove me wrong.

Nope. Any system which defers authority to elected "representatives" simply translates into giving free hand to a reduced number of individuals who each aim for said positions (and the linked power) for a number of reasons which might have little to do with the general interest of the people who voted for them.
Hell, RL politics are the best example. Much talk of democracy everywhere, but why don't you stop thinking how is it possible that in the Digital Era, we still have to elect representatives when it is so simple to implement direct polls ? Because politics = $$$ and a lot of people benefits directly or indirectly. Direct democracy shortcircuit a fair share of businesses depending from lobbying.
That's why all so-called democracies function under the concept of "representative democracy", with the sole exception of Switzerland, which is the only country having the balls to actually really implement both a direct democracy and a rotation system for the highest public servant positions in order to prevent any kind of power grabbing and the ensuing classical abuses you can witness everywhere.

Wrong. I do act under the (neutral) assumption that this initiative is genuine hence did vote Jade with all my accounts because she seems to concur in my specific areas of interest.
That said, I've spent too much time interacting in RL with politicians to hold any illusion about the intricacies & finality of the whole exercise.

I agree, although I'm possibly slightly biased being a fellow Aussie.
The only problem with that system was the fine was AUD$50 if you didn't vote, so when I was travelling during election time, I used to pay my brother AUD$50 to go vote on my behalf to save the fine and the hassle of postal voting.

Retorsion against potential non voters simply translates into increasing the number of registered votes at the price of the pertinence of the voting results since ppl end voting out of their butts. There are a number of countries which indeed implement fines if you don't go to vote and control carefully the ID of the voter. Argentina is one of them IIRC. Unfortunately this concept doesn't solve the problems of political corruption by a single iota...

You got any facts to back that up, or are you just stating an opinion?
I understand why the statements you make about RL politics, but IMO; I seriously wonder if all the reasons RL politics have evolved the way they do, are a relevant comparison for 'politics' within EVE.
Particularly given a representative council that; - Does not have decision making power and only has recommendation power - Is effectively volunteer - Has limited ability to leverage RL value from participation - Is in an MMO where the rules can be changed by CCP at anytime it's looking stodgey.
Hell, it's meant to increase efficiency of issues reaching CCP, not to provide a salary to politicians.

my point was that at least if we used a compulsory voting system, more people might actually have taken notice of this or become interested.
and as for the abstain option in the Aussie political system - there's not actual 'abstain' you can choose, but you can fill out a form incorrectly to make your vote not count. It's not illegal to do so and commonly referred to as a Donkey Vote. ----------------------

Ms. Zuni has my support for the CSM. Zuni is the best hope for anyone who feels that something more than a simple game exists inside this star cluster. As we all wait for results, it is my hope that whether or not Zuni has been elected, she will continue to fight for the concerns of her supporters.
Null sec corporate and alliance concerns will certainly receive some portion of representation. We can only hope that high-sec politics, industry, faction, and matters regarding content receive a fair share of representation as well. Both are important and depend on one another in so many ways. |

A bit USA centric. Most of the rest of the world live with only 1 level of government with true powers. Regional governments in other countries are very different from state government in the USA.

Hello all,
I for one have been waiting with baited breath, as I'm sure the other 63 candidates have as well. It's like a marathon runner who had a photo finish and was awaiting the judgement from the officials. Yes, there is going to be some minor scuffles, but I think the candidates have done well to keep their cool.
At least the devs could give us some idea of what's going on, and maybe an expected release date. This borders on cruelty to us who have worked so hard for the past couple of months to achieve the turnout we did.

We should first form a committee to discuss it. Then we'll release it to the public and form a committee to decide how to deal with the fallout.

This is like in *every* election; those who make the effort to vote will select on behalf of those who don't. In the case of the CSM there was over 14 days in which someone could have spent less than a minute making two mouse clicks to choose their preferred candidate. That they did not is a sad reflection on the pod pilot masses but not something which demeans the mandate of those elected.
Originally by: Fehn Gamin s to see what part of player base is represented and is contributing their opinions.
So far as I and other elected members I have spoken with so far are concerned, we are representing all of the player base there is no delegated decision-making here; we set out to serve all players whether they voted for us, for someone else, or not at all, and serve all pod pilots is exactly what we will be doing.
And to those unsuccessful this time around, the first council serves for six months - your time will come!
Thank you again to all pilots who voted in these elections, let's make it work ...

Edited by: Lumen Atra on 22/05/2008 00:05:01 Most players of ANY game simply play the game. They don't visit the website beyond what is necessary (and there is no necessity to visit with automatic payments) and most players do not read the forums. Any game.
To think, however, that just because only 11% of people voted means that the majority of the eve population won't be represented is naive. Each representative is connected to a large player base (voters and nonvoters) and, through the grapevine effect, reach towards a general consensus. It is not perfect, but it is hardly bad representation. In any government, it is completely possible that the people elected are only going to work towards their own goals. This is a very pessimistic view, however, and I honestly would not encourage that - although as time goes on, faith in humanity is dropping.
And to the person that essentially said representatives in any government is simply about making money and that polling the populace is better - you're an idiot. Governments are never about what the individuals want. They are about groups of people and attempting to do what will benefit the group. It just so happens that people want those benefits to extend to each individual which usually is the case.
Because people are people, not everybody is going to even be heard. The way people get heard is by becoming a group with similar ideas! If you cannot understand this basic concept, you shouldn't be voting anyway. I'd rather a small sect of educated voters putting people into office than a large sect of uneducated voters. If you want uneducated voters to vote, you would do almost as well to just let a random number generator pick.

The language of the whole thing was quite misleading given how virtually all the candidates save for darius and one or two others touted themselves as partisans set to preserve x program or y clientele rather than demonstrating their interpretive approach to what Eve was and how to imagine its deficiencies. They really shouldn't have called them candidates in the electoral sense, they are something closer to conflated pollsters than electoral or political agents.
In any event how could you realistically evaluate one candidate from another, based on their forum presence, how they characterized themselves?

Perhaps more Americans voted than Europeans because democracy is an American concept that was only later exported to the backwards Europeans. Europeans just don't have the grasp of democracy that Americans do. Their national elections are also run in an inferior way as any observer can see when comparing the American electoral system (with the Electoral Colleges and a bipartisan system) to the sub optimal multi party systems of the old world.

Well exactly.
The whole point of democracy is that the general population is in control.

On CCPs part, they should have had something in game to place votes. Login screen with a voting panel with the list of candidates (randomized order for each person) that gives basic information and a radio button for voting.
Oh God, I truly follow you on this point. This is well told.

Big time grats to all you successful CSM candidates. I'm hoping you can all make this work in our favour.
Any idea if we'll get a full breakdown of the results?
My e-mail got me a "thanks - but no thanks" with no details of votes beyond those successful.

Europeans just don't have the grasp of democracy that Americans do. Their national elections are also run in an inferior way as any observer can see when comparing the American electoral system (with the Electoral Colleges and a bipartisan system) to the sub optimal multi party systems of the old world.
It took me a few seconds to realise you were being sarcastic.
