Hey I'm just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on cross training. Obviously you lose a bit of the ability to use one races ships VERY effectively, atleast initially, but other than that what is the general look towards it?

Whether or not to cross-train depends on how serious you are about the game imo. If you're a casual gamer who plays the game to have fun, cross train away. If you're the A-Type personality that needs to be the absolute best (even though there's always someone bigger and better than you in EVE), don't cross train...open a second account and train an alt instead!

Edited by: Estel Arador on 22/05/2008 22:36:19 I've crosstrained everything and I love it: I can pick whatever ship is perfect for the job at hand. No intention to ever go for capitals, so plenty of time to train non-capital skills.

I have 3 accounts because I like having 3 different play styles.
One is mission runner
One is Industry/(soon)Capital pilot/0.0 stuff
One (this) is a pure pvp small ships
Also I like it this way as I can be helpful with my mission runner and still pirate and pod with my other.
Originally by: Radcjk PvP in eve can be sort of rough. It's closer to bad sex. Usually an hour of two of foreplay followed by 5 minutes of disappointment. And the surprise at the end.

I did crosstrain, and its mighty fun. There should be a field you specialize in though, where you can fly T2 ships and use T2 weapons, its funnier that way.
Now you see how cool it is to be Minmatar? :)
And jumpclones made it much easier to switch from activity to activity easily without alts. --- Redesign local/scanner feature - make the place huge, dark and scary again! |

*raises hand* Cross trainer here or perhaps you could say "small ship specialist"
Currently I've got all Frigates to V and all small weapons to V (so that gives me access to all frigates, interceptors, covops, EAS, assault ships, destroyers (at V too) and interdictors). I've got Amarr Cruiser V sorted (+ medium energy weapons to V) and I'm working on 'matar Cruiser V (got the medium projectile weapons to V already).
Why? I really don't like the big ships, my mission running alt has a BS and it's just too slow, I much prefer the smaller ships for PvP. It makes me pretty much unnerfable as far as the small ships go and it gives me a hell of a lot of variety in what I fly (as long as what I fly is a small ship ).
So whilst I am heavily cross trained, I'm still effective at what I do (small ships) since almost all my skill points are in those areas...it's specialisation in a diverse way. |

Ok great posts guys, now I know all that SP wasn't a waste in the eyes of the community plus as mentioned it is rather nice to have a ship for every job.

Yup cross trainer here, in my early days went for the mission runner option, so got missiles, shields, caldari stuff all sorted, then went to industry for a while, helping out a small industry corp then I got into leadership skills to help gang mates etc.
So now I find myself at 51 million skill points specialised in all the logistics ships (all lvl 5) all the command ships (all leadership trees at 5) + all 4 mindlinks and specialised in all 4 race recons, all at 4/5
But 4 years on I am only just learning Tech 2 autocannons and I can only use tech 2 heavy missiles, tech 2 blasters and railguns (medium) so you see you can go any route you want to. Personally I've fund cross training fun, I can fly any ship in any gang virtually, either recon, bs (poorly I admit) logistics, command ship, tackler (inties)
Given me more fun than sticking to one ship and mastering it, never been good at that.

Nothing wrong with cross training, except time.
Gallente player, but sitting in my Thorax a while back I realized that I really like lasers, so I went to Amaar. Now my BS of choice is an Apoc, and I love it. If I had stuck with Gallente, I'd most likely be regretting it right now.
Of course, this was an entire style change. I wouldn't recommend it for just one or 2 ships.

train for whatever you want, just don't expect to be amazing if you half ass your training.
if you want to go from a brutix pilot to a harbinger pilot its going to take some time, don't think your bc 4 and medium energy turret 4 will make you a great harb pilot. you of course wont be terrible but you wont be great.
I plan on eventually being competent in 2-3 races, but its going to take a while

Crosstrainning is something that can be quite time consuming in Eve depending on what you cross train too. Cross trainning say Minmatar Interceptors with Gallente Interceptors for instance isn't that much of a big deal. Say a month of extra trainning to be proficient in your secondary race's ships. Personally speaking I have cross trainned Frigate and Cruiser hulls for a few races. To cross trainn Battleships or above hoever would take a long time indeed partyl due to the weapon specialisation skills and partly due to the ship skills themsleves. As to the tank skills. Well to fly ships well it is worth boosting the basic tank skills of the opposite tank you fly anyway to give you that extra buffer so the only consideration for cross trainning for me is basically the weapon/ewar and ship skills themselves.
Cross trainning offers me options. I prefer being flexible in what I can do. If I want to head out and hurt people alot I can fly a Cerb or an Ishtar. If I want to Ewar people I can fly a Falcon or an Arazu. If I am flying a combat ceptor I will probably be in a Ranis or a Maelidiction but if I am tackling I will probably be in a Raptor or an Ares. The sheer range of options available to me makes up for the fact that I not "the best" as flying on particular ship. I know someone who has spent over a year skilling for the crow to become the best crow pilot int he game and he is but if the fleet op we are doing doesn't call for a crow then he's got a problem ;). ---

you will regret that.
caldari may not be the the race with "SOLOPWNMOBILES" buts its surley the race with the only ew that hasnt been nerfed into total uselessness like galente or amarr.
IMO cross training is ok when you have a decent amount of sp already. Also it shouldnt be an excuss to train boring but useful skills (tanking/navigation/cap) No matter what you train you will have to train a long skill at some point and thats realy important.

Sure if you want to test other ships why not?
All skills you ever "loose" from cross training is:
- frigate - cruiser - battleship - weapon skills (energy, projectile, missile, hybrid)
All other skills are always usefull for a char nomatter what race you belong to, so its not a biggie to cross train
But most of all, if you enjoy testing new ships, then why not?

Contrary to the rest of the thread:
I'm against cross training. I fly ships that have specific roles. I want these ships to do the very best that they can in these roles. My ships ability to do what I want them to do is majorly enhanced if I can squeeze the absolute most amount of performance out of them.
If I'm forced to skill supporting skills and totally different weapon systems (..im looking at you khanid II, way to screw laser users) on top of the mass of skills I already need it takes me longer to get the skills I need to their max levels.

cross train for ships, sure. but don't cross train professions. i think it takes somewhere between 25 and 30 years to train every skill in the game, so its really to your advantage to pick one profession and stick to it.

When you are just starting out EVE, I would say it's okay to cross train a bit at the T1 ship level and see which race you like and want to specialize in. After you find one you like, then specialize in it and go for the T2 ships, weapons and tanking skills.
IMO, becoming an expert in one race is what can really give you an edge in combat over someone who spreads themselves out over several races. And trust me, it takes years to learn a race to the level to become an expert at it. Both in Skill points and real life skills as well. Each race has their own set of tactics to learn.

Crosstraining helps nerf-proof you a little bit, since you can switch races.
Also, once you have trained up for your chosen specialisation, you will find crosstraining is actually pretty easy anyway - for example lets say you were gallente and had trained up for a Deimos with all t2 guns etc.
You already have the HAC pre-requisites down, so all you'd need for an Eagle would be Caldari cruiser 5 and boom, you're in the ship. Also, you already have the t2 blasters for your deimos, so at most you'd need to train up the railgun specializations to get the t2 sniper fit on yer Eagle.
Once you've covered the base skills, crosstraining is not that bad as you've covered a lot of ground already.

This.
I also highly speced in Gallente(I decided to switch over about 1.5 years ago and didnŠt spend points on Minmatar since then, I still fly them from time to time for fun).
If you can fly many ships you have choice. If you can only one race you are a bit more limeted but more powerfull overall. If I engage another Mega with my Mega the Pilot can play 5 years and wonŠt have any big advantage against me.
Maxing your Skills with one race will make you outstanding Pilote, equal at worst in any kind of PVP engagement.

Cross train 2 races is your most efficient bet. Stay at the HAC level or below. Make sure they share primary or secondary weapons systems, so you need not spend extra time on training weapons. Tank does not take much time to train so not a big consideration. You will be able to fly with either lv4 or lv5 for all modules you use on all the ships you fly, in a very short amount of time. in other words you are no worse than someone who specializes in 1 race only.
To give you an example, if you begin specializing in Deimos, it doesn't take long to go for an Eagle. Of course, those arn't the two best HAC's, so getting the best outta eve takes a little bit of breaking the rules above, but not much.

Hi, i can fly up to amarr cruisers, caldari BS and heavy assalts, manufacture, mine in barges, refine lvl5. and i like having the choice to fly what i like, do what i like. i sometimes regret not focusing myself on a particular career path but then i am more flexible in my corporation. I am focusing on caldari ships for the near future and combat skills. but maybe one day il train for amarr battleships just cos they look cool and scary with 8 tacyon beams firing at once.

Another example that I've done is training for stealth bombers, I skilled up for cruise missiles. Suddenly I also decided that I wasn't happy with the ratting capability of my Domi, so I'm cross training for a Raven. I've already got the highs trained. A little more shield skilling and I'm there.

I found it that training Large Blaster Spec to level 5 just for 2% damage (considering the time it takes) not that worth it, but when it comes to Medium spec skills and below if you fly the ship a lot it might turn out to help a lot. Cross training ftw after you spec your main race to: -lvl 5 on ships (frig, cruiser,BS) -lvl 4 on gun/missile specialization skills
For instance, if you're caldari, make your "second" race be minmatar since you'll use the shield and missile skills on several ships.
Once you have the second race's ships at 5 and guns at 4, train up the ship specialisation skills to lvl5 (hac/recon/commandship etc)
In the meantime train drones a bit as you use them on all ships and so on.
Myself, I just haven't bothered with gunspeccing to lvl5 and I now have all races BS at 5, recons/hac/commandships at 5 and so on. What can I say, I like variety but we've been around for a while Boink! |

Hi there.. I had the same question as Cortana AI,thats why im not posting another thread
Im a caldari pilot..when i started playing,i trained towards caldari bc and bs and started doing mission running.. But now i have moved to 0.0 and started doing plexes and ratting to make a living but i see that caldari arent ideal for pvp...
So far i have trained caldari Af's / hacs / recons / cov ops/ stealth bombers / interceptors but i really wanted to fly a typhoon when im in bs fleets cause ravens suck ,so i started training minmatar frig...eventually i can now fly minmatar af's too and currently training minmatar cruisers lvl5 to get in a vaga before learning minm bs..
But today i had an idea so i jc to empire and bought 200mil worth of bpo's and bpc's and when i got back i mined for 1 hour in an osprey
Thus,i want to spend a week or so to train for a retriever and do some mining, learn some skills needed for research and manufacturing, to start producing stuff with the bp's i bought..
I ve made a plan in evemon and according to it i will be able to do all these **** (fit all the ships i will be able to fly with t2 mods and have some good reaserch/mining and manufacturing skills) in about 300days(ship skills to lvl4 except frig and cruiser).
I'd like to have more options on what to do ingame in the future (ratting/ mission running /probing / pvp / mining / manufacturing) thats why im training for all this ****.
IMPORTANT NOTE: I cant spend more money for another subscription to make alts for each of these professions
Sooo...what do you guys think? should i resell all the bp's i got and continiue with my previous plan (typhoon) ? Any of you find this a good idea? That i will be able to do almost everything in a year thus making more isk etc?
Sorry if you cant understand everything i say but english is not my native language. Thanks in advance, be nice

Cross training is done for a variety of reasons, e.g. Just for fun, wanting to use specific ships, wanting to use faction ships, etc.
My main can use all Caldari, Minmatar and Gallente Frigs, Cruisers, Caldari and Gallente BS's etc.
The original reason for me doing this was so I could fly faction ships, e.g. my Gila, Rattlesnake etc. however, as I continue my training I find myself cross training more skills, just because I tend to want to pick and choose between the best ships available to me.
Would I recommend it? Definitely. It's much more fun having at least some ship skills cross trained, as it allows you to be more specialised in certain areas. And as someone else pointed out earlier in the thread, it makes less impact on your char if things get nerf'd.

@zero
Pick a main, this character can do many "professions". Mine for examples can just barely fly haulers, flys logistics, hacs,bs,exhumers. All the ships are t2 fits as well. This took some time but I only picked 1 race of BS to fly. Now my pvp "alt" (these days my main) can fly all 4 races, just nothing above a cruiser. Basically you'll find that you don't want to invest 25d into that gun spec skill for barely a boost in dps so you go with another race. Just understand that it'll take time.
@OP I like cross training. I only cross-train to a certain level though. I've cross trained Cruiser and Frigate hulls. Not every cruiser/frigate either. I only fly Hac/Recon and AF/Ceptor. Gall/Amarr tank overlap. Matar/Caldari tank overlap (sort of). Gall/Caldari guns overlap (boo missiles pvp). Amarr/Matar run it solo for guns, although Caldari/Matar do overlap missiles. This is part of the reason Caldari are ideal as they overlap several races and can cross-train easy enough to another race.

My main is specializing in Gallente ships (all relevant skills to 5, and this is not a joke) and is bitter about every single SP he invested in crap like industry, other races ships and weapons, shields, etc...
Stick to your race of choice and pwn them all.

As far as combat related skills go, if you do cross-train try to have some overlap. I cross-trained Caldari and Gallente because both use hybrids. Caldari/Amarr is probably the hardest cross-train to pull off because they have such different skill-sets.
As for non-combat related skills, it depends on what sized corp you are in and how many accounts you want open. If you're in a large corp with good industrial/logistic support, or have a second account, I would not train non-combat skills on a primarily combat character; let the corp or your second account handle that stuff. If you're like me and came from a small corp with only one account, some non-combat cross-training is almost required but you don't have to go crazy. I've got about 24.5mil SPs total and with about a million SP investment early on in Industry, Science, Mechanic, and Spaceship Command, I can fly Retreivers, mine and refine decently, and do basic research and production. Well worth the time spent in my eyes, even though I don't use the skills often. -------------------- "I am hard pressed on my right; my centre is giving way; situation excellent; I am attacking." - Ferdinand Foch at the Battle of the Marne |

There are quite a few tech 2 amar ships that use missiles as there primary... infact having a purely caldari character i would probably cross train to amarr first so i could use those missile ships without haveing to worry about a whole new weapons system, thats just me.

You can only fly one ship at a time. . .I find that having a long list of ships you can fly is overrated. I think choising one race and mastering that race fully is the way to go. HAC5, BB5, large guns spec 5, CS 5, leadership skills to 5, support skills to 5. . .when you are done with all that and there is really nothing more to train - then you train another races frig/cruiser/bb to 5 and the gunnery skills and thats all you have to do. . .for the most part, support skills and HAC, CS type skills are shared - so the only 'cross-train' nessisary is racial frig, cruiser, bb to 5 and the spacific gunnery skills (hybrid, projectile, lazers). . .the rest is shared.
so is cross-training an issue? well, other then training the rracial skills and spacific gunnery skills - there is no such thing as 'cross-training'. . . ----

Once you get one race trained pretty darn well, then I don't see the harm in expanding. I'm minmatar to the bone, but I just started training amarr ships. Besides a few small skills (Controlled bursts - that's about it :|) and the racial skills (amarr ships/lasers), it doesn't take very long. Having BC 5 and hopping into a harbinger was very pleasing, even if I couldnt fit t2 pulse.
I kind of switch back and forth between training amarr and training minnie. Right now there's certainly no (and I mean 0) incentive to train for minmatar capital ships, and I don't really like caps anyway, so I dont mind picking through all the subcaps. I plan to train all subcap minnie, amarr, and gallente ships.

I crossed from Dominix to Raven for ratting and it's made a huge difference. I'm glad I did. With half the missile skills I have in gunnery I'm killing rats twice as fast.

Only thing I've cross training is to use a blackbird. I'm a full combat toon and realize how useful ECM is. I'll debate now training up Recon 5 and having a pure Cal/Minny toon.

I'm crosstrained in 3 races. Have them att to BS5 and large spec lvl4, all base skills to lvl5. It takes time (4 years) but it's alot of fun |

all bs 5 all cruiser 5 hac command recon 5 maurader,hic 4
all t2 spec'd up
there is nothing wrong with cross training. it takes time, but more important than that are engineering/nav/mechanic skills imo which have more influence than 2 or 4% dps.
