Thought about how cool this would be, people could record a big fleet battle, sned it to friends so they can have an 'interactive' view of the battle, where they can view it from any angle

That's the idea. You could even do a collaborative video with friends, each taking a scene and working it over in your own unique way. Can even study fleet ops and correct people on their fleet etiquette, habits and learn so much about the most critical parts of either fleet or solo/small gang ops. Second by second view of what happens, how fast, and when

Would seriously be a nice thing. It would reduce lag on the recording person too because he won't have to capture all the images, sounds etc... Just information like directions, shoots etc and all the load is on the "player" which would be the client itself.

A recording function should be fairly easy to implement in any MMO or other networked multi-player game.
All the recorder needs to do is record all information the client receives from the server. Then the player could be a game client connected to a mock server (not a real server but a part of the client which pretends to be the server) which sends the recorded information to the client again and with the same timing.
This is how it was done in the early version of the Unreal engine (and it's probably still done this way in the latest version).
Advantages: - 100% client-based - Re-use of a lot of existing code - The recorder only records what the client can see while recording (This is good, because it means it can't be exploited!)

That's what I'm hoping The backbone is already there. It just saves the data when recording instead.

Yup, that's exactly it.

It's possible too to encrypt the demo file, so that people can't use anything but the client to modify it.
Also, there's the issue of using demo files as 'evidence' of something or other. And if I was asked, CCP shouldn't take demo files as evidence of anything at all.
Funny thing is this is probably just a visual version of the kind of logs that CCP already have

With the release of Day of Darkness II. I think it gives even more proof of what the the Eve community is capable of when given the tools.
A battle-recorder, in whatever form, would be a fantastic addition to the game. |

Edited by: Ryusoath Orillian on 31/03/2009 09:33:35 no reason technically that ccp can't do this, and as its client side no reason for lag to be an issue. the only reason it won't happen is CCP taking the time and effort to code such a tool, and we know how FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF ing lazy they are.
AFs ? remember when you said they would be buffed? when you said they will get their missing bonus ? remember when you said 5 subsystems ? then released with 3 ? LAZY LIARS.

Lol, that's a bit harsh
They're just busy on the important things; adding content, creating more bugs, extending downtime, locking threads.
Y'know, it might be the constant complaining that's keeping them so busy
Nah seriously, I WANT the damn recorder. DumbTube would go mental with Eve vids, and I could spend all day in work watching something with quality, rather than Warp-in, Scram, Orbit@optimal, wait... xD
There's so much talent in the players in Eve Online, much of it latent, untapped. (Although most of the players are clearly tapped , but you get what I mean )
No other MMORPG has such massive online community support and such dedicated hardcore players. They would go nuts for such an addition to the game.
GIF PLIX CCP! :p

You guys are under selling this: it would be a fantastic tactical tool. The big benefit would be recording actual fleet battles which happen, then being able to go back and look at what happened to find out what mistakes were made, strange things happening on grid at the time, etc.
Obviously the file would only contain effects triggers and object positions and velocities (so you wouldn't be able to know what setups people were running etc. except by studying the effects they displayed).
Plus the general community would love to be able to see recordings of battles from 0.0 and pan through and observe just how they go.
It would also be an extremely useful bug hunting tool/balance tool since exactly what was happening client side of the recorder could be shown.

Nope, I've already ranted about that
But I can only agree with you wholeheartedly, as being able to study an opponents fleet can only create more interesting fights, with more focused offense and defence, possibly tipping the balance of war to a higher point of a knife edge. Which will only make for more interesting fights, more thought behind them. Even people going to great lenghts to DPS-only to show epic demos of ships melting like butter in a volcano.
You could even discern pilots skill levels from the ships abilities, and study tracking, support tactics, look for the effects of sensor boosters, active vs passive vs plates etc.
It has the potential to be information overload for people to learn from, it has the potential to be the platform for the most amazing PVP videos we'll ever see.
Don't worry, I defo didn't miss the tactical side of things
But the GREATEST PART OF ALL, is:
We can have those demos played while in the Corporation Conference Room.
When we get ambulation, just like the infamous Death Star conference scene in Star Wars Episode IV, we could see an example of a recorded demo, obviously frame by frame, and slower than if played locally on the host machine, that would be a teaching tool like no other, allowing Fleet Commanders unprecedented interactive and detailed information to process and review.
You could even set up examples, record them, and teach them to other players. Maybe even for a fee
Post them online for download and study. Have hundreds of people work on one epic video together, all just using the ONE demo file, not having to share huge amounts of AVI files, just doing certain scenes each.
They sky ain't the limit any more

The first step could be easy: just simple record to file and playback.
Second step: export to movie format
Later more features as described in the OP.
Just imagine you could finally edit a movie in client realtime playback and load the resulting binary/text file into a CCP EVE high end renderer which gives us an epic cinematic output with awesome details, effects and quality which will bait thousands of new player into that game.

Using this for creating movies aside, I like this idea based on the notion of being able to keep a recording for future reference. Ships would have a recorder in them just like a plane has a black box, there should be the equivalent for EVE.

CCP gonna give their input on this thread at all? This would be awesome. Even if they didn't want to pay licensing fees to export to video files, they could still easily let you set up your shots with camera rails and what not and then let you fraps it. Come on CCP why can't we even get a maybe from you guys?

I really hope the battle recorder is high on CCPs list of things to do. I guess it's hard to justify it from a game play perceptive, but the marketing point of view this idea must be solid gold.
I'm not sure if other people would agree with me, but just a ultra basic recorder and player would be great to see.
One problem CCP might have is versioning. With each update of the client, the signature of the data may change. This could result in saved battles no longer being compatible with the current release.
I'm happy with the battle recorder only supporting the current version, but I could understand if some players find backward compatibility important.

But I'm not satisfied with that.
Nor should you be
So I'm gonna keep this alive til it gets into the game!! (And probably get my petitioning rights blocked lol)
