Edited by: Commandante Caldari on 16/02/2010 11:55:40 What's very important: an EVE Post-Render Engine.
The recorded data should be able to be post-rendered for a new level of visual effects, perfect AA, shadows, reflections, motion blur, de-focus etc. Overall - I am not sure if that task would make sense for CCP due to the high amount of additional work - a post-renderer could support extreme detailed models, real volume shader effects we know from common 3D apps renderer, different type of explosion effects, ships breaking into thousand of pieces etc. Just an overkill-idea. I know. But worth to put it on a future task list.
I try just to imagine that you have full control over post-camera work with loads of cam features combined with a high-end rendering of the recorded stuff in cinematic or better: Sci-Fi movie VFX quality what we know from e.g. BSG, Star Wars ...
CCP ... really ... give us this feature and you get tons of impressive promo-stuff for free and it will bait thousands of new players into the game for sure.

Abso-fracking-lutely agreed. Honestly, as much as I'd explode one atom at a time over a year if they introduced this I'd be so unable to contain my joy, they only need to add the post-rendering engine, so we can make uber vids. If, and by all means hell yea I hope they do, they add a whole movie maker afterwards, then I can promise you that there'll be so much more free Eve advertising and a whole host of new subscribers, CCP won't know what to do with them!
Also, the second half mentions that the Alliance Tournament, could actually be STREAMED to the clients in much the same manner as the recorder saves the info, could be encrypted and still be fast, smooth and reliable!

What about adding a feature to filter out unwanted info? Like if there's a unwanted ship coming by, you can simply unselect it to be rendered?
BTW, should this be in that CSM forum-thread-thing-sub?

Is that even possible? That Eve could be MORE EPIC?!!?
Hell yea! And post-rendering is a great idea, it could be an option in-game for us all, and even added to the Battle-Player for awesome graphics that we can record and share! Though I think the code-monkeys refer to it as post-processing? But Eve would look superb!

Oh, this thread, glad to see it still active, the video community would EXPLODE if this could be done.
I am of course talking about the superawesome re-playable combat-log generator, with framedumping for awesome smooth videos.
PS. I remember seeing 60fps Quake videos with motion blur added, that was so cool. -
Thanks CCP, I knew you had it in you! <3 Long live Naglfar! |

Doesn't CCP already have an in house "Post-Render Engine"? I believe it was used by DireLauthris to create Day Of Darkness II. CCP also use it to produce the awesome trailers.
Many players, especially during fleet fights, turn the effects off. It would be great to actually see the epic battles unfold in all their high detail quality.

Edited by: Lord Helghast on 25/02/2010 12:39:44 this is a great idea and needed, position and direction data is all thats needed, and the ship types, weapon targets, afterwards, we cud render it with full 16xAA and all the goodies, and produce proper videos (halo 3 camera anyone?)
EDIT: WHY ISNT THIS IN THE ASSEMBLY HALL?

Absolutely. Post-rendering is such a gorgeous end-result for videos. Motion-blur would be an orgasmic plus, and is already featured in games much less capable than EVE's engine. But that aside, if CCP consider this at all (which, let's face it, they must, the community wants this bad...), it will be an awesome plus.

You're right Kronsur Boon, they do. They use it to create the trailers we know and love, but in effect it's very simple and used to align ships and perform very unexciting actions. The fight scenes are from genuine gameplay if I remember correctly, with the other scenes created using their own tool for getting the ships to align. The engine is capable of awesome graphics effects and indeed post-processing, but a lot of it isn't unlocked in-game and we'd all just turn it off anyway during fights. That's the point of the battle-recorder tool. Turn on ALL those options, and put that sh*t up online in HD. Get us another 50k pilots in here (which, I sometimes wonder, may not be a good thing!)

what about if the battle recorder could do some basic editing of the data files it has created. Similar to some basic video editing but with the data file. things like: -copy pasting different files together in a scene to seen style -saving fixed camera angles -adding the ability to play back an audio file (septate from the battle recorder/client rendered audio). -then output a edited battle recorder file with any audio attached to it.
you could have battle recorder videos at a fraction of the size and unmatched detail since the computer does all the video rendering through the battle recorder inside the client's 3d engine. No pre-rendered lossy compression.

Quote: The CSM inquired about the possibility of a battle recorder, a tool that stores the data stream from the server which would enable re-rendering of events and therefore help with videos. CCP explained that this is technically possible and actually exists as an in-house tool. However, quite a bit of development time is needed in order to release it to players. Itęs therefore a question of prioritization.

Words fail me for how truely awesome this is! This implies that it is indeed planned to release this tool to the players!

Another example of what the Eve community is capable of doing, the Future Proof video is amazing. It's just a shame that it all had to be rendered in the Unreal Engine.
The battle recorder would be a fantastic asset of budding directors.

This also sounds a lot like my old suggestion (well, old to me, first time I've seen this one). I'd love to see a feature like this, especially for alliance tournaments and the like so you could check out ships, their speed, their pilots, etc while watching the "instant replay" on your local computer.

I WOULD DIE INSIDE IN THE BEST WAY POSSIBLE ...
... if we could use a tool like this to stream the Alliance tourny direct to our clients. Wouldn't be hard for them to use a whole server for it, they've got the test server, and others xD
I just don't see how it's NOT possible!

Any sort of video capture noticeably lags my system and I can't do cool panning/etc effects because I'm busy fighting. Such a system would be awesome.
