Yes, Yes and thrice yes.
I was having just such a discussion with someone the other day. Being able to film while fighting (with all the UI required to be effective) then remove the UI afterwards and add camera tracks and other goodies would be awesome.

Signed. This wouldn't be very practical in regards to EPIC fleet battles due to the amount of data coming in. If it can be done i think it should be. If there was a way i could have a free camera in the eve engine it would make video creation MUCH easier.
This would also help with AAR (After Action Reviews) for fleet / gang combat.

Maybe the OP can incorporate this into his original post:
You had the focus on a toolset for video creation. Personally i would not care about this aspect. I would use it for other purpose: As intel toolset.
For that purpose the battle-player needs an additional feature: The ability to open the replay in your gang within your standard eve client. There should be the possibility that the commanders of the gang can manipulate the current time within the replay, while veryone is able to change his viewport. This allows discussing batlles in your team. (So think about a whiteboard functionality - how about the ability to mark stuff inside the replay while watching it?)
In games like broodwars, players used this featuers often to analyse their enemies strategies. Okay its a strategy game and has as such a heavy focus on building orders / timings / unit mix. But basically also eve fights should contain some strategic aspects.
(If the battle player proves that its not possible to extract valuable strategic intel from replays, then it does not mean that the player is senseless - it simple means that battle mechanics need to improve).
Personally i would guess that there are more players interested into a fight simulation tool then into video creation. Okay a good video will reach a huger target audience, but most off the playerbase will not use it for video creation. Please keep this in mind.

Same idea occurred to me, see post 138 and let me know what you think!
The idea focuses around replaying the demo to a conference room of your corp-mates, when walking in stations appears! |

Epic!
Should be able to include multiple cameratracks and audio tracks with a recording too. An alliance tourny with improved cameratracks and existing commentary could get a lot of people donwloading the client and starting a trial account to watch! Not to mention what the community would do with this.
Someone from CCP marketing should read this thread and get a firm grip on the epic win sausage in it. |

I usually play 2 clients at once, making FRAPS impossible to run on my system, since it's already taxed by the two EVE clients. This idea would be very helpful in recording fights.
Please implement this, CCP.

If the battle recorder was low-bandwidth enough it could be left on all the time. This would make debugging edge case simulator problems much easier: simply submit the battle recorder footage with your bug and CCP can know exactly which objects were on grid, where, and doing what.

@ Averick: Hell yea! Watch their failures a million times, in many different angles, and in slo-mo

@ Izo: Fraps is FAIL anyway, as a lot of people who play EVE don't have high-end systems, Fraps is an impossbility for some. This way, even the bare bones computer with just enough to run EVE can at least record demos and watch them, even if it is only using the EVE client of sorts!

@ Myrkala: Agreed! There would be much video-capped pwnage! The directors of videos would go mental for this

@ Mara: It wouldn't use extra bandwidth at all. It would use the data the client normally receives, record this, plus a little complex positional info on a timeline, and be able to recreate it on-demand later. It also wouldn't use the net services of EVE so you probably wouldn't even need to be connected and can do all this stuff during downtime, or extended downtime instead of in between fleet ops, or even when you're just plain ol' BORED.

I'm not worried about network bandwidth so much as CPU bandwidth - then again the stream of packets is so small I doubt the processor would be taxed much even it was working 100% to run the game.
This idea needs CCP attention.

I'd really like to see this implemented.
I think it would be an invaluable learning tool.
CCP are investing a lot of time in to the "new player experience", could some of that time be put in to teaching resources like this, not just tutorials?
