The Fanfest 2008 page is up and we have several flight packages to choose from. We've also started a FAQ on the forums which will grow as we get more questions.
You are of course welcome to discuss the Fanfest in other threads but we've put up this thread as we will monitor it closely and help you out with any questions you may have regarding the Fanfest. You are welcome to discuss the flight packages but keep in mind that you will have to discuss any issues directly with Icelandair's customer support.

Park Inn and Nordica are both 5 min walk from the event. I was at Park Inn last year but Nordica seemed to be more popular. I'm undecided which I will pick this year.
Also it's a good idea to not fly back on the 9th if you want to enjoy the party at the top of the world to the fullest.

It changed right before Fanfest last year. I got a little bit lucky as that hotel added 10K points to my rewards club ;)
This hotel is a bit more expensive then the others, but well worth it, just watch out for the very expensive breakfast! ____ <t20> i want to be in a manager potition at Hooters <SaraDawn> Garthagk, do you have it up ? <Garthagk> I can get it up anytime. |

Missed this thread.
As I posted on General Discussion:
General Discussion Post:
Quote: Looking at the Fanfest Packages (which have been added over the last couple of weeks), there's no mention of a package from Paris, France this year.
Are there any plans to have one of these added? There was one last year, which a fair number of people used.

Yes, but what I tried to point out is that the Iceland Air packages from the UK only has Cabin Hotel and Loftleidir Icelandair Hotel to chose from, last year Park Inn and Nordica/Hilton were available as well.

Are u planning a live dev blog at the fanfest this year?
What about a fanart contest?
How much roundtables will start for discussing about future and the actual game?
There will be a pvp tournament at the fanfest.
Are u also planning a PVP tournament between Fanfestplayers and Players which could not come to iceland?

I wanted the Nordica, but when I contacted Icelandair in the UK they said the details of the package were fixed.
So I just booked the flight (note BA do not fly from Gatwick anymore ). IcelandAir from Heathrow, and Nordica for 6 nights separately. Icelandair wanted to charge me like ú 110 a night for the Nordica, so booked directly with Hilton Hotels.

Anyone?
Previously (and I say previously as we have not finished the schedule for this year) so this is going from previous years ONLY.
Opened on thursday at about noon and finished wee small hours of sunday morning after the 'Party at the top of the world'. So I would suggest a late sunday flight so you have time to recover.
Many thanks Lingorm! (also thanks to chribba for posting - what honor)
So if I calculate the 6th about 12:00 .. till saturday night/sunday morning it's not totally off ... only problem is that flights out of Denmark is in the afternoon. So 4 days would be needed to experience 100% EVE FanFest ;)
Oh well ... we'll see ;)

Alien, sorry mate, haven't had time to get in touch with you ingame, so might as well tell you and everyone else here at the same time Some of the info here can be directly translated into other countries arrival/departure schedule, so even if you aren't danish, it might be worth reading anyway.
Trips from Denmark includes either the Hilton or the Loftleidur hotel. Hilton is very close but more expensive, Loftleidur is somewhat far away from the venue, Laugardalur, so it's a matter of comfort and how much money you can afford to spend on this trip The departure-times from Denmark are lousy, as you will arrive at the hotel on Thursday around 18.00 local time and that is indeed a bit late for something like the Fanfest. I therefore recommend, if some events actually do start thursday like last year, that you book for wednesday-sunday instead. Yes, more expensive but you will not miss out on anything. IF CCP can actually stick to the old schedule, with a meet'n'Greet thursday and NOTHING ELSE, then the Thursday-Sunday will do just fine, you'll be there in time for dinner and the drinking can commence immediatly When going back home, the flighttimes are way better. I find that the flight 14.15 from Keflavik is the best choice, as you will not be back home in Denmark too late while not taking off in a drunken haze (read: bus from the hotel around 10.30 sunday morning). This is the flight that I have booked for myself the last 3 years.
The price variates with your choice of hotel. Hilton, as mention, is a LOT closer to the venue than Loftleidur is. Like, 5 minutes walk as opposed to about 30 minutes. From the hotel to downtown, I would say both are about the same distance, a rough 30 minutes walk there as well. But while the Loftleidur-deal costs 3760 DKR (flight + hotel), Hilton is 4600 DKR. So, if you can afford it and is lazy, Hilton is the choice for you. If you cannot afford that much, Loftleidur it is and I recommend you get a pair of shoes you can walk in a lot, because you will need it!
With that said, here's what I have done this year. I booked a full week at the Hilton. Monday to Monday, this gives me plenty of time to see some of the country, other than downtown Reykjavik and Laugardalur. I come in late monday, so that day is gone already. Then I have Tuesday and Wednesday to play the part of a tourist, Thursday I spend most of the time at the venue and some time downtown. Friday and Saturday are fully booked for the Fanfest itself. Heavy drinking will be done, so I don't REALLY want to stop early to get a minimum of sleep before taking off Sunday. This is why I stay until Monday. Gives me time to relax at the hotel, get my brain sorted etc, before going home Monday. Plus, I have some distant relatives in Reykjavik that I can spend some time with during the week if our schedules allow for it, so that extra day could be it.
All in all, I really hope that CCP doesn't pack the schedule so tightly as they did last year. If so, then the current packages are inadequate and should be from Wednesday instead of Thursday, otherwise a lot of people will miss out on the first lectures and stuff. I did last year and with the Blue Lagoon trip planned shortly after I arrived at the hotel, I wasn't ready to go, which annoyed me. Thankfully, I did not go and wasn't disappointed that much when I heard what happened there But my point still stands, if the FF schedule is full, add another day to the packages. Otherwise keep Thursday clear of everything but Meet'n'Greet so we don't miss out on some good stuff. And for all of you going, I can REALLY recommend taking the afternoon flight home Sunday, if possible. It's better that way...

Are u also planning a PVP tournament between Fanfestplayers and Players which could not come to iceland?
I doubt that will happen. It haven't the other years and I see no reason to do it at all. You see, the tournament either takes place on Singularity or on a locally hosted server, cut off from the rest of the internet. Getting the teams ready and setup in time is already a hassle for those at FF, waiting for players in various countries and timezones would be even more tricky. And since the tournament stretches over several hours, with the different timezones, you risk people falling asleep while waiting for the next match. Those at the FanFest usually takes some time to wander around the venue and do other stuff while waiting to continue or they hook up a laptop with EFT and plan out their setups for the next match. Basicly just keeping themselves busy while they wait, because there is a LOT of waiting to be done. Hours can pass between first and second fight, so it will be a FanFest-only tournament, opening it to outsiders would be too difficult to manage, from what I've seen over the 4 previous years.
Oh, and just as I was about to press Post Reply, I remembered another reason why it isn't opened to outsiders. Before each match begins, a GM walks around and checks that nobody has fit anything they aren't allowed, like faction modules and implants of any kind. If it was easy to check remotely, they wouldn't have to do the walking and could check outsiders too, but no...

Something like this could be also fun and add peoples which cannot come to iceland.

I have stayed at teh hotel Vik as a player in 2006. It is about 2 minutes further from the FanFest site than the Hilton/Nordica, the breakfast bar was very nice (basic, but good selection) and nice rooms.
Recommended it to a friend last year and he was very happy with it. Not as nice or posh as the Hilton/Nordica but still very comfortable and relaxing.

Even if you book some hotel more downtown it is not a problem. The city is very small and you can reach the site within 20-30 min walk from almost all hotel. I did this last year and was totally fine and very cheap. Although might be not the perfect choice for getting hammered and not finding the way back

Acording to Icelandic alcohol laws you have to be 18 to visit a place that serves alcohol and 20 something to drink... So sadly you'll have to wait untill next year if you havent turned 18 by the time of the Fan Fest...

Hilton Nordica is doing an very cheap deal at the moment if you book from the 4th onwards. roughly ú46 per person per night or ú77 for a twin room.
Thats what I have booked, and it gives me a couple days in Reykjavik prior to the Fanfest starting....

Icelandair has no plans to add a flight and hotel package from France this year, we would suggest getting a package from London and book flights to and from France yourself, but obviously we'll try to poke them a bit about this anyway.

Edited by: belzebub1 on 17/07/2008 11:32:11 While I am going to the fanfest again this year I am a little dissapointed at the packages for the UK. The package for Germany includes the Hilton Nordica hotel, but the package for UK does not. I am aware that CCP does not control the packages but you should have a level of incluence over them. Those of us who can afford the Hilton would prefer to book it all in one package rather than booking it all seperatly.

I don't think that there is a direct flight. Try something like: Romania - Frankfurt - Reikjavik or Romania - Amsterdam - Reikjavik or Romania - UK - Reikjavik
I hope this helps.

I'm from Kiruna, Sweden and we lies on 67" Latitude and Reykjavfk lies on 64" Latitude. We have pitch black at least 18-20 hours a day by then and I would guess Iceland aren't far from that. The nice thing is thats it never gets dark during the summer :) ___________________________________

Thanks, that should give me time to do some scenic photography.
Next question, I am trying to locate the building where the activities are to be held on a map. Does someone know the cross streets by it? And or is it the building in the park with the football fields? (Looking at a google map)

Iceland is fairly unique because not only can you buy tax free when leaving the country, you can also buy tax free when entering it. There's a tax free store just before baggage claim at the airport.

Check which one of the package destinations are cheapest and easiest for you to get to and then book a flight there and a package of course.

Edited by: Stoehovve Scheo on 24/07/2008 23:21:47 so, just went to look for a package for evefest from Icelandic Air flight from Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada. They have one listed, and have a departure point of Halifax, however, no matter whether I select 3 days or any day up to the 14 days, there's no "valid dates" found :/ lol
So... why list Halifax at all?
I have sent off an email asking the travel agents handling that package deal about that very question, will update for anyone else who's in the area and is interested.
IF I get a response.

This year ;) I've also been planning to go for years, but the packages are a bit pricy (considering my personal economy), So I'm holding off still. Got a bit of a set back or I would have been there for the 5th. Now going through history I'm trying to find a pattern in when the schedule is. As I'd better make sure my vacation is booked, which I'd actually like to do around may every year.
So far the pattern seems very much to be centered around week 45 of the year, could this in the future maybe be a constant, I figure the airliners migth take advangtage on that too, leaving you CCP guys with even less to manage :) Also the Fest seems to be thursday to sunday [thursday 00:00 - Sunday 00:00 or later], If that's is also some form of soft constant, I'd even be able to book my fligth for the 10th. now ;) That would be ariving the day before thursday, leaving for home monday morning or something :)
Basicly could you once you're past this hassle in the fanfest section maybe be listing the general rules for starting to arrange the Fanfest? Like for instance Week 45 every year. Rules and constants are nice, they are stable.
Still waiting for ingame voice, with voice mods. |

Yeah, it's seems like we who have bought or ticket via the link (https://store.eve-online.com/store/comersus_viewItem.asp?idProduct=129) instead of going through the FanFest Page (https://store.eve-online.com/store/fanfest2008/default.asp) to the store haven't got any Pass Code.
Would really appreciate if somebody on CCP could solve this problem, should we just order one through https://store.eve-online.com/store/fanfest2008/default.asp or should we wait and get or codes fixed by someone in EVE Store or something? ___________________________________

After quick look on in the darker corners of Information Portal I found this post by dear Wranglypoo himself (I hope I won't get shot for calling him that). See the date? Now check the OP.
So I very much doubt that they'll sell out within a week this year, which makes me even more upset with myself for hurrying and buying the wrong pass...
Oh well, sometime next week I should have the Correct Dread PassÖ and all will be good.

I think a very important point has been raised about setting a firm date for the fan fest every year. That was my biggest problem was booking my holidays to coincide with the fan fest. I need to be able to book several months in advance no thanks to the place i currently work at. A way to get around the days of the week constantly changing for a given date is to set the date for the first, second, third or the last weekend of a given month. It would sure make things easyer to plan. :-)
Oh, and i've decided to forget the long boat and go with the first viking ship that passes by.

What's the average cost that somebody will spend at the fan fest event in USD. not including travel expenses or ff access pass. Will the currency at the FF be in USD or the krona. I assume local spots will be krona.

Awesome! Our corp will come with 12 people (confirmed) as I made it a mandatory op \o/
I was at the fanfest for the first time last year and thoroughly enjoyed it. I have but one request of alternation.. The catering! It was really bad last year. I mean... pizza and prefab sandwiches for 3 days?! Will you get a proper caterer this time?

As Iceland isn't part of the US you will not be able to use USD anywhere except at the exchange offices. So either pay by card (bad idea) or buy some ISK.
I can't remember how much I spent last year, but for example a pint of beer at a pub outside the FanFest venue is 600ISK ($7.30).

Yea, that one was kind of funny. We were out of people to sell pizza so I had to grab a volunteer and stand there for a while. I saw some people looking strangely at me and wondering why I was selling pizza.

Depends on what you eat and if you drink. You should count somewhere around 600 ISK per beer (if you're lucky) and 1000-2000 ISK per meal, which are cheap meals in Iceland.

Originally by: Opertone I live in Russia, do i need a Visa (travel permission) in order to go to Iceland?
Yes, unfortunately you need one, both for getting into Iceland and for getting out of/back into Russia.
- there are no packages for my place, do i have to buy tickets and book hotel on my own? Is it possible?
Again, this would seem to be the case. Hotel is no biggie, just do your homework and book a room directly from the hotel of your choice or use a broker. AFAIK there are no direct flights between Russia and Iceland and the last time I used connecting flights I was too young to care about the details so I have no idea how that stuff works, shouldn't be much of a hassle though. I think.
- when is the right time to do it?
I'd probably start right away if I were you, getting everything in order (especially travel papers) can take a little while. Maybe start by doing some googling, visiting Wikitravel or perhaps better yet talk to an embassy or consulate, they'd better know what you need to do.
Honestly though, I'm pretty sure there are other Russians that are going or have been to fanfest that can help you out with the particulars. Or just anyone at all you know and has been abroad in recent years.

There's Jita but they're doing it different from last year. Instead of reserving tables for your alliance there's some form of hourly ticketing system. I'm not sure what it's meant to achieve but I can say that Goonswarm's pretty disappointed in the setup as it's been presented. The Alliance tables were a big hit for us last year allowing goons to come and go to the various meeting rooms as they chose and still have a central location for gathering. Some goons just wanted to hang out with other goons from around the world and eat pizza and drink beer when presentations weren't going on and it was a really good time for all of us.
Essentially, for us at least, it made fanfest and was actually a huge selling point internally when we were pitching it again for the "I don't want to fly to some space-meet and sit in a conference room with sweaty nerds" demographic, which to be frank is most of us.

Yes.... everything is going to be very cheap compared to whre you are from! Sadly, the currency has fallen about + of it's value the last week or so
Now for my question:
Will there be a schedule for FanFest up soon? I want to make plans for other activities as well, but they must be when FanFest is not

This. Oh, and this. Hard to tell what the weather will be like, pick clothing that works for -10 and +10¦C with sunshine, rain, snow, and wind (often several at once) and you'll be all set.

For those of us with interest in things financial, some comment or info on the situation as it appears to someone in Iceland would be helpful. The country appears to be essentially bankrupt, and the ability of Icelandic firms to do business internationally is certainly suspect.
Sorry if off topic but there really is some relevance. |

For a lot of us travelling to the fanefest these are kind of uncertain times. It would be very useful if CCP can assist in providing some feedback.
1. I can not purchase any icelandic currency due to the crisis. 2. Some papers are saying that foreign visitors will not be able to use Credit Cards. This for me is quite concerning as it creates a lot of uncertainty and risk in travelling to Iceland at the momemnt, CCP could alleviate this uncertainty by letting us know what to expect.
Lastly I appreciate that CCP as a company is probably trying to get a handle on the situation as this will affect your finances, I wish you the best of luck with getting things in order.

I agree that CCP should step up here and maybe do some research on what we should do, when coming to Iceland. Talk to the local banks, maybe?
I was thinking of investing travellers checks, euro's or even dollars for payment.
CCP could also introduce their in-game isk as a currency on FanFest. Print a lot of CCP-ISK, make it same value as... euro, dollar or anything, so we can exchange currency at the site. Maybe make a real currency-booth at the FanFest, so we can party on down-town!

As has already been mentioned, during the ongoing economic turmoil, people travelling to Iceland for the fanfest are concerned about the messages we are seeing regarding our inability to buy ISK and the validity of credit cards in Iceland.
Can CCP please try to find out the facts and post them here for all of us. Would appreciate any information you can provide. Wishing CCP and all of Iceland the best and hope you can all survive this financial nightmare.

I wrote my bank and asked some of the qustions raised in this thread, so I thought I'd share their advice:
Buy Euros before you leave home. When you get to Iceland, exchange to ISK as you need to. This way you will be able to buy ISK and you will not have to worry about a creditcard that has been blocked. When you get back to the airport, simply exchange the remaining ISK you may have to Euros again and deposit them in your bank when you get home. This is the overall best option with the least amount of hassle and loss of money. Yes, there may be exchange fees, but it's a hek of a lot better than to not have any ISK at all
With that said, the situation MIGHT change in the next 3 weeks, so this may all be redundant by the time FanFest starts. But if it isn't, I'll buy some Euro in the airport before flying to Iceland and do the exchange in Keflavik airport...

The CSM spoke to CCP about this issue today during our meeting. They assured us that they are financially fine. One can assume that is because their major points of income are in USD, Euros and Stirling as opposed to the Isk which is swimming in the gutter atm. They've asked us to communicate to everyone that everything is hunky dorey on their end, that nothing will interfere with fanfest and it's going to be a blast, and we may see some official word from them in the near future we can hope.

Here is a news article about Icelandair Group from yesterday. You might not have to worry about Icelandair going under. At least not before Fanfest :)
Linkage
"Icelandair Group has released an unscheduled, unaudited summary of its financial position. The move is intended to reassure investors ahead of the reopening of IcelandÆs stock exchange later this week.
The companyÆs summary of the first eight months of the year shows what many would consider to be a surprisingly positive state of affairs.
The total turnover of the Icelandair Group is ISK 72 billion, an increase of 68 percent from the same time last year. Earnings before tax are up 43 percent on last year as well. The companyÆs cash position is ISK 6.7 billion."
---------
I also think/hope exchanging your EUR or $ in Iceland at the Fanfest will be solved. A lot of things happened at once last week and the now the dust has been setting so I would think these currency issues will be fixed asap. These things will probably be clearer in the next few days.

Icelanders usually don¦t use cash to buy stuff. Everybody has a debit or credit card. So I think you should be ok if you bring a debit or credit card to the island. Visa and mastercard are accepted everywhere. Think american express is also. Not an expert on which cards are excepted but like I said, I can¦t remember when I used cash to buy stuff in Iceland.... having said that, I also can¦t seem to remember when I last went to a strip club...

The city of Reykjavik has its issues concerning handicap accessibility. I can't recall if they had dropped sidewalk corners everywhere, but I -think- they did. The Nordica hotel however has truly handicap accessible rooms, being roll-in showers and plenty of grab bars and floorspace. I wouldn't go to Iceland alone though, if you're in a wheelchair as having someone with you that you can trust to help out in navigating the environment is a necessity.

But from what I can find there are at least two rates ISK is valued for the time being. What rate should I expect to exchange at in Iceland?
One rate is the 'old' value from before the crisis started, and the other is about half that from after the crisis started... the difference is too signinficant not to be clear on

Iceland based players will be able to purchase at the door for 5250 ISK. Iceland based players who already purchased a ticket online will receive a voucher to the Fanfest store (value not set yet).
Other foreign players who want to purchase at the door can, but we are only taking Icelandic Krona, so it will be sold at the current exchange rate (USD : ISK is currently about 118-120, which means a ticket at the door for a non-Icelander is 9000 ISK).
This offer is for native Icelanders and also Iceland based players, with proof of residency like a basic visa or ID card.

If your using outlook/express then the email usually goes into the deleted emails folder and not directly deleting. you should also try your mail server as your email client on your pc ususlly has a setting to keep a copy on the server for X number of days
