Edited by: Kirjava on 15/07/2008 13:07:20 CopyPasta sun god from the anal's of human history.
Centre of the universe/zodiac leading to the sun depicted behind/ontop of the said god. Born to a virgin birth in midwinter. Died on a cross. Resurrected after 3 days. 12 minions of some description.
Sounds familiar doesn't it To explain, sun is the centre of the ancient world and hence the sun was worshipped as a god. Star sign Virgo (the virgin) is in alignment with a constellation known as in the modern tongue, "the three kings" near midwinter. The sun is seen as god. Northern Hemisphere the winter solstice is observed around late December. On the Sun/god is seen as dyeing as the days grow shorter, eventually stopping sinking on the day before through to the day after the solstice. The constellation above this as it happens is the Crux.... go figure. That's 3 days of solstice, then days start getting longer again - the sun god has resurrected! 12 minions. 12 months. 12 signs of the Zodiac.
This series of events may/may not be recognised by you.

Originally by: Kirjava Oh this is epic, Liang, I can't find fault with Dietrich yet to be honest.
What's epic is that you people (plural!) keep insisting that I'm defending religion, or that I'm religious myself. What I keep insisting (and I've stuck to repeatedly) is that religious intolerance of any variety is a bad thing. That includes being intolerant of religion by non religious people.
What's epic is that the more that I insist that religious persecution by a non religious group is exactly the same thing as religious persecution by a religious group, the more that you insist that I'm a Christian.
So where do I fault Deitrich? He constantly accuses religions (and Christianity in particular) of being religiously intolerant... yet he is just as intolerant as they are. In fact, most people in this thread have been.
They do not have a "live and let live" policy, nor a "educate" policy. No, their policy is to undermine, deride, and mock anyone that even has the appearance of defending the object of their hatred.

Originally by: Liang Nuren - This thread (you, plural) is strongly anti-religious, and at least one example (comment #5) seemingly exhibits the desire/hope that these people don't reproduce.
Which I never said but you pinned on me. Excellent job again.
Originally by: Liang Nuren There is lots of talk about how they're mentally ******ed, ignorant, fools, mentally unstable, and a social corruption.
I don't know about mentally ******ed but mentally unstable, ignorant, and brainwashed comes to mind.
Originally by: Liang Nuren - Your attitudes are destructive, and these circle jerking over some supposed "superiority" holds no positive value for anyone.
Oh I'm positive that other people agree that praying will get you no where with gas prices going down. you said it yourself that it was most likely ineffective ( see above) and yet you attack me for making the same point. Excellent job again.
Originally by: Liang Nuren - Your intolerance is not the right answer either. Intolerance easily leads to hatred (as you honestly seem to do), and mass hatred is just a hop, skip, and a jump from crimes against humanity.
You mean like the church's intolerance to homosexuality, or it's intolerance of other religions? I think those lead to holy wars.
Originally by: Liang Nuren - Historical examples of religious wars have in reality had their basis in finances and political power.
Which is what religion is all about my young padawan, power and greed. People go to war in the name of God so they can rejoice in the spoils of the fallen blasphemous heretics who dare not follow their religion.
you done an excellent job of proving most of my points, failing to sideslip the case, and walking back into your own words.

I'll bite: I'm no expert on Islam, but from Christianity's point of view, the Qur'an is wrong, so there's no question to answer here. Or was this question directed only at Islam?
Thats the answer to the question there. Both sides both think that the other religion is the wrong one and that you will burn in hell for not following theirs.
Question #2 in the series is what makes <your> religion right?
and Liang, just give it up already. You preach intolerance to me but your post show that your a mirror image. It's human nature, kinda like when the christians burned people at the stake believing they were witches.

No, I am not preaching intolerance. I'm issuing a warning about what happens when there's intolerance and hatred against a minority group (of any variety). You'd think that humanity could have learned this lesson already, but we seem all to eager to soak the ground in the blood of our brothers.

I agree with Liang here. It is hypocrisy to attack the intolerance of religion in such a manner that alienates its followers, no? The attack on religion has been a hostile one in this thread thus far.
I had another argument forming here but I lost track of it halfway through a few paragraphs, and then ran out of time. Maybe I'll come back later.

So you telling me I'm hateful, spiteful, and well on my way to teaching bigotry and the ways of the dark side to my future offspring is not intolerance to me. Gotcha.
I'm not intolerant of religion, I'm just posting warnings.

To me praying for gas is very strange, but ive always gone with this when it comes to religion.
Any person can enjoy any religion as he sees fit, aslong as that religion doesnt force him to be harmful to his fellow man.
If I see them praying for whatever reason, I let them... If I see you doing pastafarian stuff, I let you and that is a very fair system.

Wait, really? You're claiming intolerance?
Shall we revisit what you said:
Originally by: Liang Nuren Honestly, you want to know what the key difference is between people like that and you guys?
They're doing something about the situation. Even if you don't believe in the power of prayer, or even that God exists... they're out there doing something.
What are you doing? Sitting back making snide comments and quietly accepting the government giving you Prostate cancer exams. GFG.
-Liang
First, that sounds awfully intolerant of anyone who isn't praying (and you presuppose that MD is not doing anything).
Secondly, do you REALLY beleive that praying for lower gas prices is doing something? I mean, REALLY? REALLY?
If you're going to give anyone a hard time for not doing anything, why don't you give them crap? I mean, praying for lower gas prices DOES NOTHING TO LOWER GAS PRICES.
If your kid was sick with a fever, would you pray? Or would you go to the stinkin' doctor?
If your crops were suffering from a drought, would you pray for rain, or would you try to conserve water, install a cistern, or something concrete?
If you were suffering from high gas prices would you pray, or would you start bicyling to work, conserving energy, etc?
I mean, really, you have the gall to get on MD's case for 'not doing anything' when you have no basis for saying that, and yet you give these a pass because they are PRAYING?
To put it in your own religously inspired perspective, god helps those who help themselves.
And, no, that's not being intolerant of those who are religious. It's being RATIONAL.
It's using your brain (that god gave you).

The problem with those arguments is that theists have, for eons, been the true suppressors to those that did not believe what they were told. A backlash has been inevitable. The lucky thing is that most individuals that do not subscribe to the dominant world theistic religions tend to be educated and realize that violence will not be the solution. However, there are still fanatics, not fundamentalists, of most of the major religions, that to this day still utilize propaganda, fear, and violence to their own ends. YOu do not hear in the news that a group of militant atheists burned down a local curch or bombed a mosqu.
The actions in the OPÆs video were laughable. As someone pointed out earlier this was the equivalent of a rain dance. Most theists that I know would find this video laughable. I may be apologetic for bashing someoneÆsÆ beliefs, but this video was just a purely ridiculous and a pitiful act of religiosity.

Aside from the obvious wars, conflicts and violence, this sort of thing is one of the major problems with organized religions, even in this day and age. They just seem to be unable to keep their own funny beliefs to their own selves, but feel compelled to make politics out of them - or try to debase science whenever they feel it conflicts with their ingrained dogmas - thusly attempting to impose their faith, morals and values onto others that have nothing to do with them.
If they did manage to constrain their religion to the privacy of their own frigging lives, religious people wouldn't get the backlash they get from non-theists nowadays. But I can see how that may be difficult, given the THIS-IS-THE-TRUTH clause organized religions invariably emphasize.

That's water to wine which leads to a great joke:
Water to Wine An Irish priest is driving down to New York and gets stopped for speeding in Connecticut. The state trooper smells alcohol on the priestÆs breath and then sees an empty wine bottle on the floor of the car. He says, ôSir, have you been drinking?ö ôJust water,ö says the priest. The trooper says, ôThen why do I smell wine?ö The priest looks at the bottle and says, ôGood Lord! HeÆs done it again!ö
