I don't think you understand the issues. Mittens is an elected representative of the EVE players. He's elected chair because he has the Goon block vote, but there are still a lot of us who voted for him because we thought he'd better the game. Bare in mind this is a game that already has a bad reputation for griefing - one must of us can live with, because we accept, EVE is hard.
Roll on Fanfest - a massive publicity event run by CCP - and he takes to the stage and giving a presentation (which I guess he prepared sober) he encouraged people to grief a player about out-of-game issues. There's not level at which this sort of cyber bullying was going to play out well.
It was foolish, and it has already garnered our game a lot of bad press in the gaming media. That's why he has to go. And that's nothing to do with whiny carebears whining. |

Think about it, you find a target, blow him up, keep tabs on him and repeatedly blow him up. By 'common sense', this is merely griefing. But to the carebears here baying for Mittani's blood, it might as well be classed as cyber-bullying as well.
How the media ends up (ab)using it doesn't really depend on what it 'is', so much as on what it can be presented as. And if they do pick it up it will certainly be presented in the context of cyber-bullying as this is a term currently much beloved by the media. In the UK at least, this rubric is not restricted to stuff involving kids but the additional dimension of it happening in a 'game' is bound to reinforce the 'think of the children!' aspect of any story.
Pretty much. I am from the UK as well and the 'cyber-bullying' craze has really been picking up pace, with all that stuff about facebook and what not. That is why when I compare what is classed as 'cyber-bullying' to what we consider as 'griefing', then the grey line is really that much more grey. I wouldn't be surprised if the UK will ban all MMO's with the way they wish to 'protect' their children from anything 'wrong.'

The media isn't going to run with a story of a 47 year old man (according to his in-game bio) getting kind-of-sort-of-not-really bullied in a video game that nobody outside of the gaming community has even heard of. There's no press there, nothing to grab onto, especially not with The Wis himself not being too keen on reliving and rehashing that part of his life (think about why he has yet to post in any of these threads - it's probably not a fun thing for him to talk about if it's true, and if it's all made up, then yeah). |

Like they did with the game Manhunt, I think that was the name of the game anyway. It was removed from the shelves of all stores after a boy got killed and the killer, himself a child, was said to own the game and that is what led to the murder. It turned out however that they boy who was killed owned the game and not the killer and so they reappeared on the shelf and the story died down.
To the one who said bullying, and cyber bullying mostly, concerned children. Incorrect bullying can happen to adults too. People who tend to say bullying is not worth the fuss are the ones who bullied or were not victims to bullying but bystanders. |

Apology aside, what is done cannot be undone. It took several days for an apology to materialise. During this time all the community received to questions regarding conduct were arrogant scoffs and derisive sneers coupled with tired old belligerent internet memes from those pro goon, desperate to erect a "smokescreen".
That is until the fanfest alcohol subsided and the gravity and magnitude of what had transpired began to fully sink in as did pro goon awareness that more damage control measures were required as the media began to sit up and smell the beans.
There is enough evidence here in the midst to consequentially suggest the player base is not being adequately represented by a party fit for office. The eve player community has been made a mockery off.

Nice post Alex. i really want to believe it, but as we all know. "the mittani" is a master manipulator. How can we be sure this isnt just 1 way to manipulate crowds for you? i want to believe that you are sorry, but i dont know if i can.
secondly, in my opinion it doesnt matter even if the whole thing would have been setup. cyber bullying is a serious matter and even if it would be a joke, it should be handled with utmost care. the best thing you could do for the community is to step down from chairman / csm alltogether and get back in the next year, but ofcourse that is a matter of opinion. Sure, most of the guys will have some hidden agendas on why they want "the mittens" off from csm, for me its just basic "i dont like bullies". i LOVE your articles, but i dislike "the goon phenom".
i guess thats all for now

You've obviously not bothered with the media when it was a "quiet news day". They can and do twist things to their own agenda. If they can make use of it they will if they can't they won't. The person this was aimed at is irrelevant if they can twist it without him. |

Certainly some people have that view of griefing in general. But I think in this particular case the line is not so grey. The person was held up as a target in an out of game context and with the reason for the targeting being claims he made about his state of well-being outside the game. So both the platform used to target him and the reasons given were not game-based, although the methods proposed for targeting him were. But it is pretty clear that the possible upside of griefing him was meant to be that it would, hopefully, make him miserable in real life. Now, whilst that last goal might be a normal griefing goal, I think the RL context and platform amke this look like the game is actually incidental rather than central, such that considering it merely to be griefing someone in game misses out a lot of the details. |

Reading this, I will simply chose to take you at your word of genuine remorse over this but cannot bring myself to muster any respect for you still, because of so much more I have seen from you anyway which dulls my impression of you.
You say you are not like this in your real life and that has never really cut it for me as you have the capability to do what you do over the internet and clearly it bleeds into the real world. That alone make me think people like you in game have an attitude out of game that lends themselves to such behaviour. And it is easy on the internet, where you have the most effective mask, to let yourself be an ass. But for myself an the majority of the player base we only see your internet personality and social interaction over the net is just as valid a measure of your character as a person as real life interactions are. So expect people with no idea of your real life to chose to find it hard to measure your 'true' self.
I don't see myself buying you any beers if we ever have the luxury of sharing the same air. But you have at least taken the step to apologise so you get some small token credit for that in my impressions of you. Stepping down, though, would be better and maybe show that you can accept some consequences for your actions and carry them with you into all walks of life.
The **** do you care, mongoloid? He didn't insult your ******* ancestors. You dont care in the slightest about the person who was actually wronged. Worthless, self-entitled fucks like you coming in here and acting like he owes you something. Go mine your Veldspar.
Dunno where you get off, bud. I had two friends from school commit suicide.
I don't think Mittani was funny in the least with what he said. I don't think anyone making fun of people for being suicidal are funny at all. There are some things you just don't joke about.
And he is CSM chair. He owes the eve community plenty. At the very least he owes us a professional standard of conduct.
So take your unprovoked and ignorant insult elsewhere. I have my opinion and I am entitled to that. You have offered nothing to this conversation but insults. Which means you already lost and failed. |

The EVE community makes enough of a mockery of itself, it's as horrible - if not more so - than that of any other mainstream MMO. A community overall is one thing, but when the Chairperson puts on a show like that; which quite frankly would not have looked out of place transpiring in a medieval castle feast room with mittens dancing in a jester outfit for the crowd as the boar slowly roasts on the spit; then serious questions have to be asked about responsibilities. Any Sony Official watching that would have been mortified and aghast at what the innocent on the PS3 network might soon be exposed to. |

It's actually worse that that. We in the UK, more specifically the government, seems obsessed with this bizarre notion that life should be fair.
It's not... it's harsh, unfair, unyielding and monumentally brief and to be honest THAT is the lesson that we should be teaching our children not that if we cry loud enough someone will come along and make it all better, pay for that TV, make the bad man go away, or feed my family because I can't.
This is exactly what keeps me in EvE, I am essential a 'carebear' however I accept that **** happens, that people only open fire when they can totally wipe the floor with you. It's more 'real' than life some times....
I encourage everyone here to go look at some of the images coming out of India or Africa and tell me that life is fair.... In fact anyone thinking that life is not worth the living should move to these countries and 'donate' their life (that they find so useless) to people who quite frankly could do with a hug or two.. know what I mean!
The Mittani acted like a ****, he's apologised, now lets all just grown the hell up and move on.
