I have a younger brother with Downs Syndrome, I dont kick off or even give a **** when people start throwing that around, posting pics and calling everyone a tard. When I was younger I punched a few people for it, I grew up and stopped caring about it, if we all worry about hurting someones feelings all the time we will all live alone, sad lonely lives. Well tbh probably many of you do anyway so sorry about that.

Please learn what "liberal" actually means as far as politics goes. It original use was descriptive only of trade policies. Leftists would be the term you are looking for.

Actually, belief in "laizez fair" economy is only one aspect of liberal philosophy. Individual autonomy and freedom are also parts of the philosophy that are possibly even more key (in fact encapsulate the former).

You're right in one thing though. People who use the word as a bad name don't know what it means. Being liberal means not being a Taliban. Even the "conservatives" of western democracies are liberal...except maybe some of the real whacko's like the Tea Party in the US.
