I never understood what some people have against Jews. Ever been to a Jewish neighborhood? No loud music, no droopy pants, no loud music, no pit bulls, no welfare recipients, no crime. Can't say that for... others.

OP forget it, a big part of the EVE player base is too immature to understand that jew used as money maker is pejorative. Back then in Europe it costed them to end up in work camps that turned into extermination camps later on, nugh said.

One thing that's been bothering me for some time is the casual use of the word jew in Eve to mean trader/industrialist. It's very widespread and it's derogatory. I've often seen it used in the context of people being angry about exploitative prices. "100 isk for AM small???" and someone replies "Shrug, Jews."

It's now so normal for many players and alliances that people are starting to forget it's potentially offensive.People used it constantly when I was in the old Northern Coalition. And it's become so widespread now. For example

I don't think he was trying to be offensive, he just uses the word because to him and everyone he plays Eve with, it's just the word for trader

It's possibly because I'm older. I was born in the 60s and influenced as a child by many people who had fought in the Second World War. Their view was that the war was completely just because of the Jewish issue and that antisemitism is profoundly wrong

It's a very out-of-date stereotype. In the Middle Ages there were prohibitions in the Christian and Muslim religions against usury. This meant that most bankers had to be of a different religion and in Europe they were generally jews

But now there's very little connection between jews and usury in the modern world. It's not Israel that caused the crash of 2008

I believe it originally came to Eve via Goons from the Something Awful boards where there's a tolerance for many things that people wouldn't want in Eve. The N-word is dropped as often as the word jew over there. But that's there and just because it's permitted there doesn't mean it should be permitted here.

Now you could try to defend it by claiming that it's meant light-heartedly, that it's a joke, that it's ironic. But it's well established in law (and simple common sense) that harassment is determined by how the recipient feels, not the person makiing the comments

It's not appropriate here and it worries me that it's gaining traction. So much so that when a player is trying to behave it slips out - he's forgotten it's an emotionally-charged word. In fact to some extent I had too, it was only when someone commented on my blog about Mittens using it that I thought this really has gone too far

I would like CCP to crack down, to issue temp bans for the use of the word jew in a derogatory way. And I don't just mean if someone complains I mean one day a player laughs about "jewing it up" and the next day they can't log in.

Recent events have shown that Eve's developed a locker room culture that's out of control and in some countries there are even legal implications to antisemitism.

If you are getting offended by this word in EvE Online, You may want to seek another game.

EvE players are notorious for their thick skin and shady antics. EvE itself is immersive and you are your character. That character can be anything from a pirate to a scoundrel to an upstanding Amarr Empire Fighter. Those choices are yours. The language you use and the way you treat others is part of your character. Just as people are offensive in real life, so are characters in EvE Online.

You need to grow some meat sack armor or you will never have a good time in EvE Online.

This is going to be entertaining.

Especially when American prime time hits.

It's a bit odd actually, maybe it's my age, but if you point out that using Jew in that fashion is in fact a slur they respond with complete surprise. It's become such a standard phrase among many groups they don't even think about it as actually being offensive any more.

Your kidding right? In teh UK they tried to ban the term blackboard in schools.. And here the term liberal usually refers to people who vote for the Liberal party, the worst PC party possibly in the known world. I think they may single handedly have caused more racism than anyone else ever did.

The thing is, the UK is less racist now than it has ever been in its history, BUT some people absolutely refuse to let it go, its like a life raft that if they let go of they may become unimportant and dissapear. The funniest thing about that is the people trying to keep racism alive by telling everyone how racists it is to use terms such as blackboard, or singing baa baa blacksheep are mostly lower middle or upper working class white people.
