Because ATI have integrated a function in the ATI graphic driver that makes games like Oblivion or Fallout 3 to be able to use Anti-Aliasing and HDR at the same time. There is a hidden fix in the driver than enable those games to be player with AA and HDR on.
But ATI doesn't have that thing for EVE online in the driver, so we are just renaming the 'ExeFile.exe' file to 'oblivion.exe', because that will cheat the graphic driver to think we are running Oblivion instead of EVE Online, and then we can enable HDR when you have Anti-Aliasing on.
Or if i for example are renaming the 'oblivion.exe' file in the Oblivion game folder, if you have that game installed, and then rename it to 'ExeFile.exe', then you will see that you can't run Oblivion with AA and HDR at the same time. Because the driver thinks your not running Oblivion.
That's how it works.

Ok, by looking at the feedback I got from ATI/AMD when trying to raise this as an issue I guess we simply have to send them a lot of requests so spread the words.

Edited by: Steini OFSI on 17/11/2008 14:41:10 I ran Trinity when it came out on nHancer with 8800 GTX 758mb card, smooth and beutiful as silk, that was the same quality as they were showing off in trailers and looked gorgeous with fps up to 120, down to 45-50 with some screen activity (mind with the full AA, shadows and all that mumbojumbo). Haven't done it though in a long time, mainly because nHancer needed fullscreen to work (does it still?) and with dual monitor, 2 accounts and web browsing at the same time just didn't work with full screen mode.
I'm still thinking about getting a dedicated browsing/video/alt comp to play EvE in these gorgeous settings, but would like have to be able to flip with a switch the keyboard and mouse (just as easilly as I alt tab) is that possible?

That's how it works.
If it's anything like the nvidia drivers, it's not that it's fooling the drivers, there's probably just an application profile somewhere in the ATI configs that overrides the defaults for Oblivion. Nvidia's got the same thing in its driver settings, doesn't work too well, hence why nHancer helps. :)
It IS a strange solution to the problem, but if it works then knock yourselves out. :D I ran AA+HDR for a while, but in situations like a large fleet fight, I prefer to not risk bad framerates or game crashes just to have AA.
Then again in those situations you're mostly staring at square boxes and your overview, so the uber graphics don't really do much. :D

Download nHancer, Run it, Select AA select the mode you want untick the "enhance game antialiasing" goto the 3rd tab on anti aliasing compability select oblivion
If your nvidia card is the geforce 8000 series or newer, you should be able to run anti aliasing with hdr. If it's the older you will have to tick the disable HDR box in order for it to run properly.
Please note that if you disable hdr, games whose graphics engine are dependant on hdr(gear of war, UT3) will crash!! |

Thanx for the tip with nHancer. Now I can enjoy fine AA with HDR candyness. Any chance You can help me guys with the refresh rate settings? No metter what refresh rate I set on my desktop, EVE always sets the refresh rate of 60Hz as default. Any way I can override that? I would like it to go with 75Hz like my desktop. There was a time you could set the refresh rate within the client but it's gone now. Dunno why CCP have removed it from the advanced graphic settings.

Yes, there are cheap 'usb switches'. you plug the switch into your two pc's, and your mouse/keyb into the switch. then you can just press a button on the switch and presto, your mouse/keyb gets slaved to the other comp.

I played a while with HDR + AA enabled with nHancer and I observed that here is a lot of artefacts (white squares and circles) appearing on your ship when it's cloacked. I'm back to playing EVE with AA only. Still looks great.

I see lots of topics going now where many peoples can't get the Anti-Aliasing and the HDR to work at the same time on ATI cards that support Shader Model 3.0. But if your running EVE with Premium graphic, you should be able to run it with AA and HDR at the same time. Like you can with Fallout 3 for example.
And there is a guy who have made that possible a little while ago, and you can find the link to what you need to do HERE.
Or you can just download the ready made VBR script that you can just click on and it will do the job for you to make you run EVE with AA and HDR at the same time. The VBR Script is HERE.
You have to place the VBR script file in the main EVE folder where you have installed EVE Online (where the bin folder is located).
Remember, when you have clicked on the VBR file in the main EVE folder and then pressed OK after that, you will have a new folder called 'bin-hdr' in your main EVE folder + you will have a new shortcut on your Desktop that is called 'EVE Online - HDR'. Just start EVE from that shortcut.
And when you are ingame, then just press Esc and then go to the option where you can turn on HDR and Bloom. Then just activate them and you will have to restart EVE and then start EVE again, then you will see that EVE Online runs with both AA and HDR at the same time .
It's also important that you run the VBR script again after every patches. But before you do that, you should just delete the 'bin-hdr' folder in your main EVE folder, so you don't run into some problems. Because the script will make a new 'bin-hdr' folder with the files that eventually are modified in the new patch. You will always have a new 'EVE Online - HDR' shortcut on your Desktop after each time you run the VBR scrips.
Normally if you have done that without the script, you would just lose the Anti-Aliasing when you activate HDR. But that wont happen now. You will still have the full Anti-Aliasing activated if you have that activated in your graphic card option.
Here you can see the difference without HDR and with HDR on.
EVE Online With Anti-Aliasing, But Without HDR On.
EVE Online With Anti-Aliasing + HDR On At The Same Time.
Now enjoy the awesome graphic in EVE, with HDR .
I tried everything in that topic but none of it will even work to run anti-aliasing with OR without HDR. I even tried disabling premium graphics but still no anti-aliasing whatsoever. I tried forcing it in ATI Tray Tools to 2, 4, and 6. None of it works at all.
Tried adaptive anti-aliasing and temporal anti-aliasing as well.. no luck with those, either.
Is it now impossible to enable ANY kind of anti-aliasing under ANY circumstances for EVE? I don't think I'm going to waste money renewing my subscription if there can't even be AA anymore.
Edit: Damn I can't even find the button to e-mail subscribe to the topic. Where is it??? =/ These forums are pretty messed up lately. |

I have an ATI HD4870 and while I can run on maximum settings 8x AA / HDR / Bloom / full shadows / 1690x1050 resolution, try playing with that in even a small fleet battle and your game will either crash due to having AA forced and the game not supporting it (see: xx page forum thread in tech sub-forum about the issue) or you will get <15 FPS :( even though it looks very pretty..it's just not practical unfortunately

Well it must be something with your graphic driver then.
Normally it helps in 90% of the cases to reboot your computer. Because i know for a fact that the Catalyst driver can mess up in some ways and you can't get Anti-Aliasing whatever you do, until you reboot your computer. Then i will hopefully work, for you to, as long you haven't done it already.

Not sure about it with EVELauncher.
But about the shortcut icon to the EVE client with HDR. When you run that VBR script, the script will automaticly make you a new shortcut that you have to use with EVE when your running with HDR on.
If your thinking about the actually exe file that you need to run to be able to run EVE with HDR is located in the 'bin-hdr' folder in your main EVE folder where you have installed EVE. And in that folder you have to run the file that is called 'oblivion.exe'.
So not sure if you can choose what exe file you want to use in EVELauncher to get EVE to run there. But if you can, then just select that file in that folder to be the main exe file to that EVE profile.

Yes HDR is reducing your performance ALOT, so you need at least one Radeon HD4870X2 graphic card to run that with ok FPS. So i will not directly recommend you to use it in a fleet fight. It's ok to use it in missions and things like that.
Yes when the graphic card is having a hard time, then you can get crashes. It happens sometimes to me to, but not often. When my graphic card have used all of it's memory and the client sometimes just freezes, then EVE just quits it self. My graphic card is only an old Radeon X1900XT card though.

Ok, after searching a little about that kind of error, it seems that you might have a little problem with your Windows .
I can't directly say what the problem is, because it can be alot of things that can cause it.
If you just downloaded the script file and then placed it in the main EVE folder and then run it, then it should run and do what it's supposed to do.
If it doesn't do that, then you have an error somewhere in your Windows that have with those scripts to do.
More than that i can't tell atm.
But just for an update on the script. It seems that the script doesn't work right now after the QR expansion, so i think hat have to be looked into.
Will give some more updates here if i find anything out.
