"Only" 250k players?
EVE had almost continuous growth for > 5 years. It's one of the very few games that have an upward trend - especially amongst those older than 1 year where the first hype is over.
EVE is actually wildly successful: http://www.mmogchart.com/Chart2.html
I wonder why people keep assuming that EVE is small and a niche game while most other MMOGs are smaller - many even shrinking. And none of the others do it on a single world cluster.
The 10m of WoW are so far ahead that *all* other MMOGs combined hardly compare. So WoW is not a very useful benchmark to compare with.
New players should look for a decent corp to join ASAP - makes big difference. They could have told you what to avoid, how to survive and help you get a replacement ship.
And in some ways EVE is much better to new players than other MMOGs. Does a lvl 1 player stand any chance at all vs a Level 10+?
I played Anarchy Online a while a few years ago. Played with a friend. He went on a few missions without me - got several levels ahead and next time we tried to go on the same mission we couldn't - the mission he could do wouldn't even allow a char of a few level lower in.
Pilots in EVE can join any gang - and can play useful roles in fleet even with relatively very low SP.
Moreover - pilots kill higher SP opponents every day in EVE. Most of the SPs of a 50m SP pilot don't apply to a particular setup he's currently flying. That together with marginal returns for the higher skill levels means that a veteran gets more variety and a 2-5% bonus for having a few lvl 5 skills where lvl 4 is plenty good enough.
Last but not least having a good setup and the right ship for the occasion and knowing how to handle it well counts for a lot in EVE pvp. In a fight between a 5m SP char who knows what he's doing and a 50m SP char who just throws expensive mods in but sux at EVE combat - my money is on the new guy. --- Save the forum: Think before you post. ISK BUYER = LOSER EVE TV- Bring it back!

Was it 250k players or 250k accounts? Cos if I'm anything to go by, Eve has about 12k actual players.

The real truth of the matter is that everyone you see in-game is an alt of someone who posts on the forum. So, I mean, look at the number of forum regulars, multiply it by maybe ten to account for the irregular posters, and that gives you the number of actual individuals in the world who subscribe to this horrible game. By my calculation Eve has like two hundred subscribers max.

No, no no.. you got it wrong. Here's how it really is:
250k accounts.
Isk Farmer accounts: 120k (on avg 1 farmer commanding 8~10 macro'd farming alt accounts)
Humans subscribed to EVE: 43.3k
Alt accounts of above mentioned human players: 86.7k (avg 2~3 alt acct per human player).

I have never been forced to go through a low sec system to get anywhere actually. As long as I tell the map setting to avoid low sec systems. Granted, the routes have been a lot longer at times, but never have I been "forced" to go through low sec... I was just posting from my own experience.
Maybe I've just been lucky?
You have been insanely lucky.
noe. You can go between any starting systems of each race without passing by any low sec. To be forces to pass by low sec means one of the parts moved by himself into a high sec bubble inside low sec.
Not a single problem with game design there, just with the OP.
And to OP, if you think loosing a few days or game work is bad game design , better quit now. Because later on you wil be facign with "I lost 3 months of game work in a single battle" situations. And THAT is what makes the game worth playing.

I'm liking the sound of this WOW thing.
I think they have an advert on TV about becoming a Dark Night or something.
I'm going to give it a go. Sounds much better than EVE.

Best ad I saw was the Mr. T one. Doesn't make me want to go back to it, but at least it was amusing.
"Maybe Mr. T hacked the game and created the Mohawk class. Maybe Mr. T is pretty handy with computers. Did that ever occur to you, Mr. Condescending director?"
I'd rather play LotRo, personally, if I wasn't playing EVE. Playerbase is generally more mature than I'm usually used to. Still jackasses who don't respect other people's preference of playstyle, regardless of said playstyle, but they're definitely rarer. John Gabriel's Greater Internet ****wad Theory is always in effect in all games, as well. ---- "Sounds like a bad case of pikal envy, if you ask me."

It's fine, and it's even easier now than it was a few years ago, when many of us managed to get through it and enjoyed it. So anyone whining now is really incapable ;)

We all had to start in harsh conditions. When I started in Feb 2004 you don't even want to know what the tutorial looked like, I had to reroll a character because it was bugged. Essentially it was shoot ship ->mine asteroid -> buy civilian shield booster -> have a great life in eve!
Seriously though if you know new people struggling that it's up to you to help them. This game is so daunting, it's very important to have a helping hand, and some guidance.
We can't change the fundamentals of the game to suit new players, doing so would upset everything that EVE is about. We can't just institute a "new players cannot be shot by players with X times their skillpoints" or a "all ships lost in the first week are regenerated free". Such things are ridiculous, and have no place in the EVE world.

Originally by: Kassarryaa Bad game design for new players. Plain and simple. Me and a friend started playing. I wanted to go Calidar. He went Minmatar. Well after a few days of building up isk and SP to get something better than what we started with we decided to play together. So I set a course towards him. I use the map feature and tell it to take the safest route. Oh look I have to jump through .4 space to get there. Of course as soon as I enter it my ship is popped and I am podded. Great all the work I have done so far. Gone! So I start again. A day or two later I am doing a mission. Sends me to .5 space. I am out killing the rats in the mission. In jumps another ship pop and I am dead and podded yet again. My new ship gone again. And still I have been unable to join up with my friend.
Perhaps there is some way to get to my friend without this happening. But as a new player I have no idea what this way is. I don't mind PvP when I have any chance at all of competing. I mean even the a tiny chance of winning.
Yes I am new to the game. Me and my friend are going to go play something else now. This game just doesn't seem well thought out for new players.
The game design is simply poor in that aspect of the game.
I wish everyone else best of luck. But I now see why a game that looks so amazing has so few players.
Just my two cents.
Sounds like you had a bad run in with low sec. I strongly urge you to let that mistake go and give EvE a second chance. Admittedly the tutorial and learning cliff desperately need some dev lovin, but once you master the basic of this game, it really is quite fun. It is unfortunate that you've experienced the darker side of EvE before you were ready.
If you really have lost everything, message me ingame. I'll help you out and teach you how to make 10 to 30 million isk per day. When you have a steady cash flow like that, PvP losses aren't so financially detrimental. ______________ Some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn. |

Rules of play
1. Don't undock in anything you cannot afford to lose. 2. See rule 1.
remember those rules and the rest of the game slowly unfolds.

The real problem is that noobs don't read the "new to EvE" threads on these boards. This could have been avoided. EvE is not noob unfriendly, its noobs that are not EvE friendly.

I started in Sept'06 (less than 100k SP, 5k starting ISK, Lofty trick in full swing, privateers just kind of starting up, CONCORD 3 buffs slower and weaker than today)
I'd love to experience the feeling of my first 2 or 3 weeks again. And yeah, I got ganked in lo-sec when I was about 4-5 days in (my first Kestrel! ). That repeated feeling of OMG THIS IS AWESOME JESUS IT'S HUGE WTF THE MARKET IS *ALL* PLAYER STUFFS SERIOUSLY, FIVE THOUSAND ****ING SYSTEMS JESUS JESUS WOW CARACALS ARE AMAZING!
I see people post stuff like "EvE sucks because all you can do is mine for the first 3 months" and I'm thinking, are we playing the same god damb game?
It's been said a thousand times, but that's because it's the plain truth: if you like to learn, if you like a challenge, if you view setbacks as educational, then the new player experience in EvE is unbeatable.
I remember my first jump into 0.0. I was, literally, physically, shaking with excitement and apprehension. No other game has delivered anything like that, not even remotely close. Ever.
EDIT: thinking about it, I'd agree that the new player experience is not as good today. It's too safe, too easy, too much ISK, too much hand-holding. It encourages wrong assumptions that then smack new players in the face.

Edited by: Jacque Custeau on 20/12/2008 12:23:34 To be honest the OP makes it sound like someone gets popped automatically when entering low sec. I am not going to address autopilot features because thats been done to death. The fact is only a handful of low sec systems are gate camped for long periods of the day (e.g. rancer). There is lots of low sec systems where you dont find anyone at all.
I agree the new player experience in general needs some work though. I started EvE when the servers went live, and even though it was tougher than it is right now, the whole community was struggling so I guess it was different. -------------------
