Hmm that depends on how long lifetime is, and if the game is any fun. When they start offering lifetime memberships it usually means the expected lifetime is short and that the game isnt really fun.
Quiet you. Everyone knows "life-time" is much better then any set period of time. I mean it's a life-time! That is a long time in the computer industry.
Sort of like when the computer industry switched from 3 year warranties to life-time warranties on certain parts because life-time sounded better (and happened to be much shorter ).

HGL was dead the second it was released. Online was the nail in the coffin along with the 'premium' deal which ****ed off a ****load of people.
I laughed real hard when I got the e-mail, too. I went out and bought the game the day it was released, even had my hopes up. I don't even think I played past half of the game, it was terrible, I played it for maybe a week to give it a chance but it just... felt so bad after getting all my hopes up.
I was an avid Diablo II fan and followed these guys around, but I know good enough that Diablo II was a fluke and that most likely D3 won't even live up to it. But I guess I'll make do. |

There is a fatal flaw in this logic.
Even if all the other MMOs were 70% cheaper than EVE, it would be irrelevant. Make WoW, Warhammer and LOTR as cheap as you want. I'm still not going to play them (at least not more than maybe one month, until I'm bored by the same old things).
I mean, riding a bicycle to work is cheaper than driving a car. But if I have no interest in bicycling 120 miles every single day, then it's not relevant in the least.
If you judge your recreational activities and hobbies by what is cheapest, then why don't you do papier machet or something and really save some cash. |

Subscriber numbers have KEPT INCREASING even in this economic recession we're witnessing...
A minor point - although there is a net influx of players, there are still a lot of people unsubscribing their accounts any given time, and of these, a significant fraction are probably doing so due to the increase in costs. UK players make up a disproportionately large share of the subscriber base, too, and it's becoming a lot more expensive paying in cash due to the fall of the pound against the euro.

The oil driven Cdn peso is in the toilet and EvE costs alot more now than it did. It's not CCP's fault but it isn't mine either. I don't want to stop training alts and I doubt CCP wants me to either but I'm not sure either of us has a choice in the matter. |

As long as EVE is unique on the market, many people (me included) are willing to pay for it. But when an alternative will get on the market.. that's when CCP will feel the pain.. |

Or wait till it drops to $199 (usually happens 1-2 times a year so far) for a short time. While the game likely won't see a huge amount of growth it will likely be around long enough to make the Lifetime sub worth it. I wouldn't pay the $299 price tag though personally.

I'm glad to see a sensible reply. Since our pound seems to be crashing and dying at the moment the cost of Eve has gone up by about 50% recently. All those little costs add up, if i find myself short on cash then the ever expensive eve account will be first to go :( --- "Bring me a shrubbery!" |

I notice everyone keeps making claims around the concurrent user peaks records of late as an indicator of eve's growth.... sorry but thats a flawed assumption. if everyone with an active eve account logged in this second it would break the PCU but would it mean that eve had gained a significant new number of subscribers... nop.
Infact the growth in active subscriptions (not sure if that includes non paid ones aswell though im fairly sure it does) increased from ~235'000 to ~245'000 from the period from apiril 2008 to jan 2009 so 10k new subscriptions over a 9 month period roughly 1110 avg subscriptions per month, thats a quite drastically reduced growth compared to what previous periods have been with a lil digging figures show in
2006-2007 the subscription base went from 80k to 155k so 75k gain over the year 6250 new subs per month 2007-2008 the subscription base went from 155k to 225k so 70k gain over the year 5833 new subs per month 2008-2009 the subscription base went from 225k to 245k so 20k gain over the year 1667 new subs per month
growth may not be inverted yet but its certainly been slowing over the past few years, the further back ya go the more inaccurate the figures are but it looks as if the peak growth period for eve was the 2006-2007 now im fairly sure marketing dept has been looking at these figures and that's what's prompted the boxed release, I also have a sneaking suspicion that ambulation and associated content will be a pay for optional expansion ------------------------------------------ Sig removed as it lacks EVE-related content. Think about the fact that a lot of those customers stayed, and also think about saturation.
