I've been playing eve for 4 year but since the timecards price fixing and crap economy I've went from paying ú20 for 3 months to ú35 (I pay ú46 for 6 months on wow), therefore running 3 accounts is no longer justifiable. Eve is by far the most expensive MMO I know of.
Good bye Eve hello LOTRO life time membership, now theres value for money!
CCP: Why don't you ask your economist if its good practice to compete against other MMO's by having uncompetitive prices. When you get the correct answer file this under the question "Why are so many people leaving eve?"
And before anyone says says CCP arent responsible for the current economy, they arent but the Icelandic banking system didnt help now did it - lol |

Aye its alot more expensives for us Brits since the enconomic crisis started, but its not exactly eve's fault. They haven't actually increased the prices. Though CCP should start charging GTC's and CC in ú aswell as $ and Euro. Or lower the prices to even out the effect of the economic crisis. |

The average is 1.3 accounts per player. You are one of the very few (less than 5%) with more than 2 accounts. Time to go back to a single account, it seems.
Quote: Good bye Eve hello LOTRO life time membership, now theres value for money!
See you in 2-3 years when LOTRO closes down. "Lifetime membership" doesn't mean YOUR lifetime, it means the game's lifetime. They calibrate it in such a way as to get about as much cash out of you as they could possibly hope to get out of you if you were a faithful customer.

Subscriber numbers have KEPT INCREASING even in this economic recession we're witnessing, in spite of the policies enacted by CCP which you keep criticizing. So, apparently, their policy is good enough, for now at least.
P.S. Why bother charging less if no other game comes close in long-term enjoyability ? |

Having only one account I can easily afford it
But of course I fully understand your concern and agree that you should switch to LOTRO.
Apart from that I want to offer my services for disposal of your virtual belongings. Just contract everything to this character and don't forget to send the remaining ISK you have.

I think the price is pretty low actually. I paid 133 dollar for 1 year subscription, which makes it about 11 dollar a month. I think I can get 1-2 beers for that price.. And when we know CCP dont add anything for their expansion EVE online is a real bargain!

Going by basic credit card subscription prices:
EVE costs $14.99 a month. LOTRO costs $14.99 a month. Warhammer Online costs $14.00 a month. Everquest II costs $14.99 a month. World of Warcraft costs $14.99 a month.
Yeah, EVE Online is really the most expensive of all of those games. |

Let the rich kids who aren't feeling the world economic recession thingy pay your EVE sub(s) for you 4. Stop being a bigot 5. ??? 6. Profit
To Akita T, there has in fact been some GTC price-fixing occurring. Prior to the whole 'world economic recession', you could get a 30-day for 150mil and a 60-day for 280mil or so. Economic recession thingy kicks in and we see South Africans paying R10.5/$1, where it was ~R7/$1 prior. That's a 50% increase. How did GTCs react?
30-day GTCs disappeared and 60-day GTCs went up to 450mil in price. 50% more than their previous price of 300mil. But wait! There's more! If you sift through the forum threads of old you will notice that the price gradually got pushed up by fake buy/sell threads, steadily increasing the price! Demand went up and supply went down? Rubbish - you couldn't have a thread up for more than a minute at the 'buying' price that these people had pushed it up to without it being filled.
So GTCs now sit at a toasty 600mil for a 60-day, on average. That's 100% more than they used to be.
That aside; can I have one of your characters? :D |

That's price adjustment, caused by external factors. "Price fixing" means something else entirely, and it certainly not appliable in this case. It would imply GTC sellers (or GTC buyers) have some form of agreement to sell at or buy only at certain prices - which is obviously not the case, there is no such bloc of people that have the power to dictate prices unilaterally. All GTC sellers try to get as much as possible, all buyers try to pay as little as possible. It's not price fixing, it's free market chaos. |

Quiet you. Everyone knows "life-time" is much better then any set period of time. I mean it's a life-time! That is a long time in the computer industry.
Sort of like when the computer industry switched from 3 year warranties to life-time warranties on certain parts because life-time sounded better (and happened to be much shorter ).

HGL was dead the second it was released. Online was the nail in the coffin along with the 'premium' deal which ****ed off a ****load of people.
I laughed real hard when I got the e-mail, too. I went out and bought the game the day it was released, even had my hopes up. I don't even think I played past half of the game, it was terrible, I played it for maybe a week to give it a chance but it just... felt so bad after getting all my hopes up.
I was an avid Diablo II fan and followed these guys around, but I know good enough that Diablo II was a fluke and that most likely D3 won't even live up to it. But I guess I'll make do. |

And let's check those multi-month subscriptions to get the best deal:
Warhammer Online - $77.94/6 months ($12.99/mo) LOTRO - $143.40/12 months ($11.95/mo) World of Warcraft – $77.94/6 months ($12.99/mo) EVE - $131.40/12 months ($10.95/mo)
So yes, EVE is really really expensive. But sure, at $299 for a "lifetime" LOTRO subscription, you only have to play it for 27 months to be cheaper than EVE… that's always something. |

There is a fatal flaw in this logic.
Even if all the other MMOs were 70% cheaper than EVE, it would be irrelevant. Make WoW, Warhammer and LOTR as cheap as you want. I'm still not going to play them (at least not more than maybe one month, until I'm bored by the same old things).
I mean, riding a bicycle to work is cheaper than driving a car. But if I have no interest in bicycling 120 miles every single day, then it's not relevant in the least.
If you judge your recreational activities and hobbies by what is cheapest, then why don't you do papier machet or something and really save some cash. |

A minor point - although there is a net influx of players, there are still a lot of people unsubscribing their accounts any given time, and of these, a significant fraction are probably doing so due to the increase in costs. UK players make up a disproportionately large share of the subscriber base, too, and it's becoming a lot more expensive paying in cash due to the fall of the pound against the euro.

I'm glad to see a sensible reply. Since our pound seems to be crashing and dying at the moment the cost of Eve has gone up by about 50% recently. All those little costs add up, if i find myself short on cash then the ever expensive eve account will be first to go :( --- "Bring me a shrubbery!" |

I notice everyone keeps making claims around the concurrent user peaks records of late as an indicator of eve's growth.... sorry but thats a flawed assumption. if everyone with an active eve account logged in this second it would break the PCU but would it mean that eve had gained a significant new number of subscribers... nop.
Infact the growth in active subscriptions (not sure if that includes non paid ones aswell though im fairly sure it does) increased from ~235'000 to ~245'000 from the period from apiril 2008 to jan 2009 so 10k new subscriptions over a 9 month period roughly 1110 avg subscriptions per month, thats a quite drastically reduced growth compared to what previous periods have been with a lil digging figures show in
2006-2007 the subscription base went from 80k to 155k so 75k gain over the year 6250 new subs per month 2007-2008 the subscription base went from 155k to 225k so 70k gain over the year 5833 new subs per month 2008-2009 the subscription base went from 225k to 245k so 20k gain over the year 1667 new subs per month
growth may not be inverted yet but its certainly been slowing over the past few years, the further back ya go the more inaccurate the figures are but it looks as if the peak growth period for eve was the 2006-2007 now im fairly sure marketing dept has been looking at these figures and that's what's prompted the boxed release, I also have a sneaking suspicion that ambulation and associated content will be a pay for optional expansion ------------------------------------------ Sig removed as it lacks EVE-related content. you know, when you resort to hyperbolic statements like this, you pretty much lose all credibility. 3 PCU's in a month (5 weeks?) broken and we have to wonder why "so many" people are leaving EVE?
if you mean you and your 2 alts, that doesn't count as "so many" people.

Akita T, agreements need not have a visible representation to be made.
Ever heard of the concept of 'unspoken agreements'?
I have many times now posted on a GTC sell order thread, only to have the seller say they assigned the GTCs and that all the transactions (to myself and the other players on the thread) were completed; and yet, I magically never lost isk and never gained game time from the transaction, and the seller would promptly 'complete' their thread. Why might that be?
It smells like an attempt to make it look like people are perfectly willing to buy GTCs at priecs as high as 600mil, and that they are doing so in large volumes; meanwhile it's just the same people desperately trying to find an offer that's legit, whether they have to pay through the nose or not.
Back to lamarar;

If $15 is 15% of your income then you're managing to subsist on $1,200 a year. The guy must be living with someone who provides funding for all his basic services, because you can't live on that amount in the US on your own and not be in a tent city.

I'm not sure anyone is knocking the principle, just the fact that someone is trying to compare a crappy, derivative, cookie-cutter licensed-property-cash-in P.o.S. game with EVE.
sure, LoTRO offers a "lifetime sub" to a game that it would be hard for anyone with more than a few brain cells to enjoy for more than a few weeks/months and sure, if EVE offered a lifetime sub i'm sure more than a few of us would take it, but trying to compare EVE and LoTRO is just a mistake. |

if it's the thread i'm thinking of, he didn't say where he was from (he said "anus of the world" when asked) but he did say that EVE was approximately 12% of the "average monthly income" in his home country. |

The abandoning of older machine support and classic system on March 10th will probably cost them more subscriptions than the rate.
The pricing difference is a common problem with not only games but books as well. Many of their prices were set at the time of printing/publication when the American Dollar was much stronger than it is today.
At the same time you're not really paying more than you paid 4 years ago, it just seems that way when you compare it to the USD.

My friends spent easily 3 eve subs worth of money a month just on partying with their mates on weekends during highschool. Some of my other friends now spend easily 10 eve subs worth of money a month on partying, just to get started.
If I spend R150 (~3/4 of an eve sub) on alcohol in a month, that's a HELL of a lot for me. I also don't have to worry about 'gas' (petrol) since I don't go anywhere I can't go on foot/cycle to :D ---

my pc cost ú300 and runs premium fine. your car must be ****ing rubbish. a SM3 card costs about ú30-ú40 these days, and will likely be obsolete by winter 2009.
also, read the devblog. they are introducing premium lite for people who maintain that their 486DX2 should be able to run all new software.

My cars 19 years old :). I think my puter might be worth more than it.
I can't remember what video card I have though :(, so I'll be checking it when I get home in about 4 hours. I know I can't use the premium graphics because it doesn't support shader 3, I just hope it supports shader 2 as I am not quite ready to replace it. (Though it is in the plans for this year to replace the computer but probably not before summer).

I have to say this, but why not just go down to 1 account? You can still play the game just as well, you just won't be able to exploit the massive advantages multiple accounts gives you, like neutral scouts and spies. Or maybe playing without an advantage scares you?
If the economic crisis means a reduction in neutral scouts and spies, then it won't be all bad.

i'm guessing you're not a software developer. maintaining 2 branches of the same app is a MASSIVE hassle. it's not just an exercise in copy/paste.
my pc cost ú300 and runs premium fine. your car must be ****ing rubbish. a SM3 card costs about ú30-ú40 these days, and will likely be obsolete by winter 2009.
also, read the devblog. they are introducing premium lite for people who maintain that their 486DX2 should be able to run all new software.
CCP have a specific devision purely for art. I doubt they spend all day editing alliance logos and have no time left over for making two models of everything.
a Sm3 gfz card might cost 30$, but it would also require me to buy a new motherboard.... and a new cpu.. and new ram..I'd be upgrading everything to play one game, the software i use for work runs perfectly fine on the system i have now. You basicly covered why i havent upgraded in a while tho..

Thats right, i dont keep up with the jones's, I dont compare Epeen length at LAN's, and i certainly have no interest in keeping up with the 'cutting edge of technology' or whatever martketting directors are calling it these days.
I'm quite happy to be paying the highest prices possible for any MMO, becuase its the best one out there, what i dont like is a system thats working perfectly fine, being trashed becuase not enough of the Eve population is using the 'premium version' and runningtheir 2 accounts in classic. I beleive the majority of players have 2 accounts by now becuase of the previous dozen 'power of two' promotions, and running 2 'premium' clients is like running 2 slideshows with a tendancy to crash no matter how much youve spent on your machine.
Finally dont tell me 'read the blog', if it wear clear that this was happing i wouldnt have to have requested a linky from another player in a forum thread.... why did i have todo that? Becuase the Dev blog linky in the news is written with the same pompus I.T attitude that you come across with, 'oh look it runs on my Amiga' no, amigas dont dont grab my interest, havent for about 20 years, so why would I read a dev blog about them (or 486DX2 for that matter smartass), the first paragraph looks like another self promotion of the upcomming patch, and combined with the topic title creates no interest at all.
The change should be linkied in the general discussions forum. popping it in the news and giving it a cute offtopic title isnt good enough.
Anyway, off to research parts for my new comp, I'm sure an I.T superstar like yourself could have linkied a few cheap components that would have kept thousands of effected players happy in your post, but i realise the general attitude of I.T nerds usually prevents this and its alot easier to just act like a jackass instead. |

1. SD2 compatable cards are going for around US$30-50. If your car is worth less than that, I'd like the name of the dealership.
2. Most people find premium to be more stable than classic, with higher framerates. I, myself, have noticed this with even 3 accounts open - though I'm not tech enough to understand why it is.
3. Not maintaining antiquated and out of date software isn't lazy, it's good business. No one's claiming MS is being lazy because they no longer release patches for Windows 3.11 (With Networking!) This is the same. ----------------

Here is a SM3 capable card for 40$ (can probably be found cheaper, just first I found) that won't force you to upgrade the rest of your computer. Unless you don't even have agp, but if that's the case then your computer was outdated long before EVE was even released. AGP became standard around 10 years ago.

Ok read the Dev Blog and all I have to say about you whiners with 'older machines' is pfffft. The specs they listed up there cover machines that you can pick up on NewEgg for 600$, not, as one person above stated 'more than the cost of my car'.
Tabula Rasa, Vanguard, EQ2, AoC, DAoC, Warhammer, hell even the upcoming Diablo II, all have higher computing needs. If this makes you choke on your cheerios, choke away, geez gosh golly.
Updating and upgrading your computer is something most people do every 3-4 years, not something thats unheard of. The needs for Eve are still less stringent than virtually everything out there.
The arguement that it will cause more people to leave is unfounded. If you can afford 15$ a month to play , you can afford to budget 600$ to buy a new comp if yours is so far behind the curve. Its ALL entertainment money your spending, and if you can afford to be entertained (by what is arguably the cheapest monthly form ever) you should be able to upgrade every once in a while. |

The price of an EVE account is the same price as an account with any other MMO. The only thing that makes it seem more expensive is the fact that if you want to have multiple characters, you have to have multiple accounts. I don't know what CCP's reasoning behind this is, but I can think of two logical reasons myself:
1. If you could skill up multiple characters on one account, people would be skilling up characters just to sell left and right.
2. If people could have a pvp character and a high-end mining/industry character on the same account, the games economy would fall through the floor because there would be 10 times as many industrial characters as there are now.

The economy argument by the OP holds no water. MMO's are much, much cheaper than other RL activities. Compare such activities as bowling, going to the bar, going out for dinner and etc., you will find that time spent playing an MMO will be much less expensive.
Last night I mined for 3 hours instead of heading up the street to have a couple of brews at the bar. I will easily spend $20.00 - $30.00 on drinks and food for myself. Here is what I paid for EVE last night:
Since I have two accounts, and there are roughly 730 hours per month, I paid $0.12/hour to mine last night( 730hours/$30.00subscription). That is dirt cheap entertainment. |

this thread is lame...
a video card doesn't have to be a 500 USD model... if you like to tinker with hardware - you can upgrade your computer for less than 400 entirely. It will be out of date, but better what you may have now.
No... eve is cheap, cheaper than internet subscription, cheaper than electricity or public transport. It is a 30 dollar a month fun. Maybe you'd dine in Mc Donald's a few times for that.
Save on your taxi trip. Don't do joints. Finally quit smoking. I agree that 3 accounts are getting expensive. But the game is so much better without infinite crowd of alts. |

I'd take a shot at 2. being because of better heap management and resource allocation - and that the premium client probably wastes fewer cpu cycles on software paths for image drawing (since it uses 'modern' graphics routines that are supported by cards from the last 5 years or so; rather than older routines that newer cards no longer support).
to Joe: a Shader2 card is anything produced in the last 6 years, so unless your machine is at least 5 years old you probably already have support. They're not asking you to buy the latest ATI or nVidia card - just something produced within the 21st century. |

Actually, I got my recurring sub set up before they started charging in Ç, so I'm only paying $38.85 every 3 months ($12.95 a month). However, if I want to change my card or subscription period, it'll force me into paying in euros.
Given I live in Britain, either one involves a currency conversion. Why shouldn't I be able to choose? Paying in $ has been consistently cheaper (although presently not by much), because not only is the exchange rate better, my credit card takes a smaller commission on the change!
When my current card expires (September this year) I'll be petitioning to stay paying in $ on the new card. |

You might wish to check you are comparing apples with apples there. Both EQ2 and Vanguard use SM2, NOT SM3. I have run both of them on older PCs than this.
Most folks are complaining about the potential move to SM3 in the fall release which the devs wished people to comment on.
And, as been pointed out to those not too ignorant to listen, many people play EVE on a laptop. Upgrading the video card is often not possible. |

Good bye Eve hello LOTRO life time membership, now theres value for money!
CCP: Why don't you ask your economist if its good practice to compete against other MMO's by having uncompetitive prices. When you get the correct answer file this under the question "Why are so many people leaving eve?"
And before anyone says says CCP arent responsible for the current economy, they arent but the Icelandic banking system didnt help now did it - lol
LOL, EVE Online too expensive, now THAT IS FUNNY :p
1st of all, the monthly sub is just the same as any other premium mmorpg. On top of that you only pay 5Ç to buy the game ( 19,95Ç to create an account and pay for your 1st 30 days ) instead of the average 49,95Ç for a box.
Add to that, that you do not have to pay for expansions like Mines of Moria for 39,95Ç and EVE Online is alot cheaper.
And a lifetime subscription just plain sucks, cause it means they got your money 1st, and now they can let you rot, not that they will, but they dont have to work for your money anymore.
Add to that the high system requirements of LOTRO and other games, which means you need alot more expensive hardware then you would need for EVE, even if it goes SM 3.0 ( which they won't if CCP has half a brain left ).
How can you with a straight face come here and tell us that EVE Online is more expensive then other mmorpg's? You have no clue or just trolling.

1. I have in my system what is considered among the entry level of ShaderModel 3.0 cards, a 6600GT 128mb 2. I run, at 1280x960, TWO premium clients on two separate monitors 3. They run at an acceptable framerate, considering I originally started playing EVE on a GeForce2 MX400 64mb years ago
Bleeding edge?
Honestly, it's like you're a car owner crying because the manufacturer has said they're no longer going to make the parts your car needs to run; but it gets you to work and back just fine! Why should you need to replace your car just because they don't want to waste resources on keeping YOUR car running!?
Originally by: "Joe" CCP have a specific devision purely for art. I doubt they spend all day editing alliance logos and have no time left over for making two models of everything.
I hate to break it to you, but shaders require programming. On top of this, you need individual code for every individual iteration of a shader model (note, model here does NOT imply the actual mesh, or model you see the textures applied to) and graphics subsystems the shader is being used in.
It's not simply a case of making two models of everything; that's simple, they can reduce the poly count of the high detail models and make lower detail versions instead. They can also reduce the resolution of the normal maps in use, or the MIPMAP filtering of said texture, to reduce the strain on the system it's being used on.
You know what's funny? A lot of the models and textures in use in the premium client are actually being used in the classic client right now. The only difference between the premium version and the classic version is that the classic version has no true specularity or normal mapping; I'm not sure they even have BUMP mapping.
Shader model 1.0 is archaic; creating models and textures that run fine on it with the graphics we see in the classic client versions of current ships is taxing on the developers, as they have to make sure that it falls within a minimum performance profile, so as not to upset the few dinosaurs that are unwilling to upgrade.
Shader model 2.0 is also old and support for it is dropping - I don't know how the code looks, but I wouldn't be surprised if learning Shader Model 2.0 and Shader Model 3.0 involve learning almost completely different languages; ie: they may simply not have the human resources to deal with its development anymore.
I think CCP is basically the last company to support a game on the scale of EVE with Shader Model 1.0, let alone 2.0. You should be grateful they didn't simply drop the classic client when they launched Trinity.

Originally by: lamarar I've been playing eve for 4 year but since the timecards price fixing and crap economy I've went from paying ú20 for 3 months to ú35 (I pay ú46 for 6 months on wow), therefore running 3 accounts is no longer justifiable.
And before anyone says says CCP arent responsible for the current economy, they arent but the Icelandic banking system didnt help now did it - lol
Maybe that's because you're running THREE accounts!
How much money would it have taken to run 3 WOW accounts for 4 years?
monthly fee *3 (with no ability to use in-game money to pay your subscription fees) PLUS 3 expansions in that timeframe for EACH account.
EVE is not expensive at all, it's one of the cheapest IMO. If you've been playing for 4 years, you should be able to play for free (at least one account should be free). I've only been playing EVE a couple months and I make enough ISK to have my account be essentially free. After 4 years, you still can't spend an extra 300M isk per month on a time card? |

Whoops... sorry 'bout that. Guess I got my dates the wrong way around *facepalm*.
But still, I'm pretty sure there were many, many recommendations for cards for AGP systems prior to your claiming that us I.T. Nerds aren't helpful etc.
Admittedly though, some of us do often get a bit annoyed when people start complaining about trivial matters that they simply have not taken the time to look into. :P |

Also My pc is in the running for worst pos of all time awards and it runs premium smooth as a placid lake..mebe it's time to upgrade from that 486?

Originally by: Gamer4liff You're right, I'm sick of paying $0.00 a month by playing with GTCs, CCP should pay me, thanks for the tip!
Some of us have lives
Back when 90 day GTCs were still being sold, I could actually afford 2 accounts. Now i'm paying almost the same price just for one and I don't how long for... |
