So have the pod eject at the speed of a missile. Make it go 40km at 4000m/s in a random direction. A lucky interceptor might grab it, but odds are you'll get away.

Make it a high slot module. Drones are essentially weapons, and they should be a tradeoff for another possible weapon location. Drone bay or nos? Blaster or drones? If I could put a couple mining drones in my Badger, I'd be an AFK mining superstar.
