CCP Punkturis has been working on a new font for EVE Online and has written a blog about it. Much like the new font, her blog is very readable and can be found right here.
Let us know what you think about the new font in this comment thread, and when the new font is available on SiSi, we have a special issues thread ready for you right here. CCP Guard | EVE Community Developer |

Have you considered using 'small caps' for menus? It is very legible and doesn't scream as much. Plus the lessened text height of small caps makes them take up less space on the screen than Caps & lowercase since they lack descenders.

The obvious place to see the F is the log off button. I don't think it's a UI thing though, just the way the font is. Still. The F does look as though the top has been cut off!

I to oppose change in any way while lamenting that things never get done and still expect progress in every field of EVE right now.
I wish to make bitter comments on how to little has been done to late and demean the achievements of making a font that will make reading in EVE less of a chore.
These changes, together with the upcoming new/old hangar will surely impact my favourite MMO chat room significantly. - [yellow]English only please. Zymurgist[/yellow] |

All caps is a BAD THING for readability and it's always bugged me that EVE switched so much of the text to it. People read word shapes more than the letters themselves and switching more of the textual content to regular case is a great move. All caps for headers and other small snippets of text is fine.
Letter spacing seems a tad wide but that could be a Windows thing. I'm looking forward to seeing this on Mac where it'll be rendered properly.
Punkturis, it's looking good and I can't wait to see the final result.

Some old features in eve are like precious glass vases on a shelf with not alot of room somethings going to get broken when you put the new vase and they peferre it be the one the vase was supposed to replace.
I have an odd feeling that the contextual means to control which font is displayed is no where near in existence yet in the game but they're more than capable of yanking out the entire libary as they done before when it comes to the text. |

Nice, but I have some questions:
- Will it be possible to change the font size of ESC menu?
- Will it be possible to change the font size of the mission descriptions?
- Will it be possible to change the font size of the local player list (player names)?
- Will it be possible to change the font size on the ship fitting window?
- Will it be possible to change the font size in the item description windows?
- Will it be possible to change the font size in the PI, S&I, and market screens?
- Why not allow us to use our own favorite font? Most of the day I stare at DejaVu Sans Mono and I really like that font (the whole font family actually).

I actually prefer the old font - the new one feels a little too organic, certainly less sci-fi'ey.
It wouldn't take much to address the existing font issues without changing the entire feel of the UI: http://www.cabinha.com/files/25bcbb37c0fb867bf9f750e49e574e81.jpg
The scale of the new font seems a little large (or the old font is small) to both be size 12, meaning the UI would be less information dense in the same given size (by pixel).
There again I see some value in increasing the font size, and improving legibility - however the new font seems less scannable - perhaps due to the swinging sensation of the shoulders and to a lesser extent ascenders. |

As someone who wears contacts for Myopia (that's nearsightedness, or not being able to see well in the distance) I can't thank you enough. People who suffer from this will know that their contacts or glasses scale things down, making small text harder to read. It effectively means I have the font currently set to expanded, have have to bump it up twice from the default size to be able to read this. Have to admit, I play EVE on 1920*1200 because I enjoy my internet spaceships in all their splendor, but still. I hope with this font I don't have to tweak every conversation window or channel that I open and be able to just read everything without squinting. The screenshots are promising already.
PS: I agree it would be nice if we could control fonts more individually, and I like the idea of allowing us to choose from a series of fonts or to be able to use our own. Just because it requires *slightly* more effort to upkeep does not mean it should not be done. Are regression tests checking a font with automation after each new release so hard? No. It is about quality of service.
This game is customer service driven don't forget, and upsetting long-standing customers for the sake of a little effort is generally not good business sense. And I'm not talking just this specific change, but CCPs other recent changes, like hangar view, turret icons and forums. Responding to customer feedback delivers a better product, and my feedback is make such changes 'optional'. |

I read it but as a non-techie kind of reader that isn't obvious.
Please expand on why you couldn't have a client setting for one font or another? I'm not talking mixing them up for different windows, but like graphic settings where you restart your client.
What stops you doing this?
thanks.
Edit: I'd like to also just point out I'm not resistant to all change just because I'm used to the old way and am stubborn, but I believe change should result in an great improvement for all concerned. Lately a lot of CCP changes have been half-arsed and I hate to say it but I'm going to include this one too because potentially this should be part of a much greater UI re-design/fix.
Xeen (a UI developer in real life) I think it was had a long running features and ideas threadnaught (major changes that I supported!) on the old forums regarding improving the UI which was largely ignored/ducked by CCP for years. Now they change a font without doing the rest. It is like trying to fix the massive leaky hole in your houses' roof by changing the colour of the guttering.
At least an optional approach to subjective changes like this, turret icons, hangar view etc etc that might take slightly more effort to begin would benefit those who prefer the new look and not upset those who dont.
Hope that makes sense. |

I'm suer there has been some hue and cry about a properly scalable font (who has time to read all the responses), and while that would be nice, I think what he has forgotten is the reason why the fonts currently only scale to a certain point, and that is so they can all still fit properly within the UI windows.
While it may be slightly out of the scope of this particular blog, I think in some ways these do go hand in hand.
When playing on an exceptionally large screen, like a hi-def television, the current font becomes unreadable; while it does appear that the new font will help with some of the readability, none of us are getting any younger and I can only cram my nose so close to my screen.
Certain other less fun MMORPGs use a UI Scale that allows all elements of the UI to be increased/decreased in size with a slider, which allows text to still fit within the boxes since the entire UI size has been increased.
Are there any future plans to move towards something like that, since it would definitely be a boon for everyone playing?
I know, this is a font blog, but since CCP Punkturis is everyone's favorite UI programmer, maybe fishing for an answer might work |

I like the change with a couple of caveats. First, I prefer Helvetica Neue - but pay no mind to that, I'm no typographer. Second, I'm going to need to get use to the font-heights. My observation from your screen captures is that the old font is shorter and gives the illusion of extra font-weight and importance. I'm sure I'll grow accustom to all of this but I think I'll miss that meaty and blocky quality of the original Eve Sans. |

It's great to get a better and more readable font, but what about font sizes? Is EVE still limited to size 13 or less?
I play on a 1280x800 display so size 13 is actually too big for me (IIRC I use 11), but for players with big screens, the tiny font is a serious problem. Yet this dev blog does not address the font size issue at all.

I hate the look of that font compared to the old one, and don't understand why you can't just give us a checkbox/drop down selection in our options to choose the font we use.
It is subjective whether it is better or not; I generally don't have an issue differentiating between the 6G& etc to be honest and when you make changes like this you should consider those who like or are used to the old way of things.
Make subjective changes OPTIONAL. every optional thing for you means TWO supported possibly clusterfuxed hacks, and another option to store... and to read... and be aware while doing anything anywhere in the code. so no, bye old font, welcome future. It is idiotic attitudes like this (well you are a goon so...) that would have all old buildings bulldozed and have us all living in modern luxury cargo containers....Why? because its the future!!!!111elev..11! Deal with it!! Responding to customer feedback delivers a better product, and my feedback is make such changes 'optional'. this is not *slightly* more, it is ALOT more. suddenly for every label in every place you need to write TWO use cases using different rendering libs, and hell knows what else. Also rendering was moved from python to c++ , so that makes TWO UI tests for different languages, that are bound to be run against different libs... I bet they don't have ONE suit of test cases, so I'd give it to them if they built ONE suit, but once you didn't start with TDD it's helluva hard to get on this train.
oh and 2008 called, told me to tell you that "calling someone goon" belongs to them and they want it back .

Barring that, perhaps leave the old font available for a while and track usage statistics?
Dear god, you make wearing glasses sound like some kind of terrible affliction, really. Its good that there are fonts, but don't go crying about how wearing glasses makes your life so much worse. I wear glasses and contacts and I have never seen the world shrink before my very eyes.

After a small twitter talk with CCP Punkturis, had to bring the subject here for several reasons, mainly due to character limitations but also for proper feedback channels regarding this specific feature.
Wouldn't it be beneficial in the long term the implementation of a dynamic window handling based on font size instead of having to change statically windows (most likely I'm guessing, margins/padding etc) to accommodate the new font ?
I do realize this isn't something you guys would be doing in the future often, or at all, but by implementing a dynamic window handling of font size would allow the adding of new and quite welcome features like font sizes on the whole UI.
I would think probably the addition of scrollbars for textareas would be the best option if text exceeds the window size instead of resizing the window, and for headers/titles etc that would need to be resized (with the whole window resize being the last option if text width exceeds the window size)
p.s. : I'm really not a fan of 'static' settings, it increases the work require in the future for changes involving related stuff and increases the probability of breaking something as static stuff tends to be spread out along several files/code

I know, this is a font blog, but since CCP Punkturis is everyone's favorite UI programmer, maybe fishing for an answer might work I second this... font originaly was designed when EVE supported 800x600 (!) resolution, now you can't really play with 1024x768 with all this bulky UI, while on resolutions higher than that font gets too small to read (it's more of an issue for me personaly than "playing guessing game" when here's some "5" or "S" in text)...
same issuse with this forum, really... ofc, zooming in does wonders in overcoming first-impression disgust, but that's still not a reason to release half-made stuff and wait 'till players think of "workaround" so GMs/Devs can advise to use it instead of fixing.
As for caps - it's never really been an issue for me, on a contrary: currently it makes some menues easier to read (never thought of that, did you?). Not that it's the best way to make stuff readable, but seing how we're unlikely to get larger fonts anyway... |

Still, it's better to have font where you can tell O from 0 despite its size (well, guess that's about it, really ) than wait for it for another 8 years 'till they finally come to making scalable UI or whatever to properly implend new font.
Plus, (if CCP is to be belived) it might actually make loading UI faster. And I do hope it will fix chat issues with text not updating properly (which, I belive, ocasionaly returned over the years because of using older (broken) builds for some patches - might become impossible after font change... unless they screw it up and we'll have to resize all windows again 'till summer ).
Not that it changes fact that most problems with readability come from font size rahter than font itself... |

I like the font.
I find the "Menu" to be more legible in the old full caps - either that's my mind or because the nature of the empty space between the letters in a tight space like that is causing a bit of a "Wave" effect. It could be because the font sits a bit high.
In terms of the font itself, I feel like it's a "tall" font. Which isn't necessarily bad, but I liked the slightly blocky nature of the old EVE Font.
It feels more crisp, which I like.
And I do think it feels Sci Fi - it feels a tiny bit "MS Terminal" for some reason, but with a tilt.
It looks a little larger, which I think most people will like - a font designed for a bigger monitor world :)
Congratulations!

It seems a bit too thin to be honest. Make a Medium & Bold versions, using this version only for the extremely small type.
This is probably more of a UI thing, but if I'm going to play on my 60" flat panel I'll need larger fonts, so the ability to resize fonts and the UI to be elastic and reformat based on font size would be nice. |

Found it a bit depressing that CCP had to hire or reassign someone to design a font. Typeface design isn't an easy thing, and the folks who do it professionally are skilled and expensive. It should have been easier to leverage existing typefaces from the OS. After all, since CCP licensed Arial anyway, that would cover 99% or more of all typographical needs in the game. Art resources spent on designing a font because of the not-invented-here syndrome?
CCP Punkturis isn't to blame on any of that, fwiw - she didn't design the font but implemented it in the UI.
The switch from all caps to actual upper and lower case text seems like a no-brainer when you get closer to a readable font. However, I agree that UI changes once foretold in a devblog should include scalable windows and fonts.
What I want to know about this, and the other devblog from yesterday, what's the timeline to Sisi and then TQ?
I'm hoping that these are not core updates for the winter expansion, but Incarna 1.2 updates that would include the conclusion of the captains quarters (to get that monkey off your back), due no later than October 2011... |

It'd also be nice if EVE supported 720p, I know finding a PC that is less than 1024x768 resolution is hard these days, but it's a fairly common resolution for htpc setups. My setup also does 1080p, but holy god too small. |

This is like touching up a scratch on your car's fender when the door has been torn off in an accident and is still missing. The fact that the UI is so primitive that it can't handle different fonts is the problem that should be getting attention. Spending time monkeying around with a single font to make it fit into a static UI is just not a smart use of anyone's time. Will this be an improvement over the current font? Yes. Should the UI be able to handle any font? Yes, and that is what should be the focus of a UI developer's time. |

I'm delighted to see new fonts, however I can't believe that you are able to render spaceships but NOT allow for different fonts ... REALLY? You can't add 2 or 5 new fonts to give people a choice? If the old fonts needs to die ( I think it should, but I don't speak for everyone), then fine, but provide an alternative for those who prefer a different font style.
Thanks for the new fonts, please provide choices, I hate comparing to wow, but they do let full screen, diff fonts and many more customizations for make the play environment more immersive.

While it's nice to see you guys (finally) getting a new font to us as promised, I have to agree that it is almost more difficult to read (seems more blurred, though that might be due to comparing an upper-case character to a now lower-case character). Also, there are freely available fonts (e.g. Liberation Fonts or Deja Vu Font (in case of licensing issues with the first)) that are well designed and tested for readability/scalability.
I do like that I may now tell the difference between "0" and "O" and definitely love the (promised, but not tested) performance improvement. I am definitely tired of typing in one chat window only to have some mystical UI lag change my chat focus (yes, I have already filed a bug) so that I have to retype (or copy & paste) half of my sentence in my original window. |

Nope, you'll only be able to change the size of the context menu, as before. I'm sure that this question can't be answered by you as it's most likely a different department. However, has there been any discussion to give us more control over what is a larger font on our screen and what isn't?
The questions are asked individually as many of the pilots I fly with have always wished they could increase the font size of the overview without increasing font sizes of other things in the game.
If it's never been discussed, mind raising the question so that when future aspects of the UI are replaced, code can be put in to keep this a consideration? |

^^ this. CCP shouldn't be working on fonts, they should be working on font handling and UI scalability. We were even told that carbon makes our on screen windows out of textures, so applying a scaling factor to the texture/window should be easy.
The font is nicer, so kudos to the designer - unfortunately its the wrong solution.

I reserve judgement on the long-term legibility of the new font(s) at this point, but I do feel the need to point out that there is inconsistent capitalization in the new General Settings configuration window example found here:
http://content.eveonline.com/www/newssystem/media/2208/2401/escmenunew.jpg
Specifically, some of the check box descriptions use capitalization on only the first word. Other descriptions use caps on each word's first letter. Consistency in execution, to me, is just as important as the effort put into crafting this UI update. 284 Characters 284 Characters 284 Characters 284 Characters 284 Characters 284 Characters 284 Characters 284 Characters 284 Characters 284 Characters 284 Characters 284 Characters 284 Characters 284 Characters 284 Characters 284 Characters 284 Characters 284 Characters 284 Characters |

Barring that, perhaps leave the old font available for a while and track usage statistics? I'm actually also myopic, but never really felt that bothered by the font. Still, I approve of changes that help FCs I may work with in the future actually read the system names right, finally (No more me thinking, "That's a 0, boss, not an O." or whatever). |

I know, this is a font blog, but since CCP Punkturis is everyone's favorite UI programmer, maybe fishing for an answer might work

I'm hoping that these are not core updates for the winter expansion, but Incarna 1.2 updates that would include the conclusion of the captains quarters (to get that monkey off your back), due no later than October 2011... I think one of the Dev comments actually covered this at some point..? Basically said some of the changes would be seen on SiSi within a week or three, or something to that effect? Though this really should be mentioned in the devBlogs themselves, I suppose. |

CarbonUI, our new UI engine, supports this. We have it running in a rough state on our development branch. However, there are some issues with some sliders and icons being offset, since their position was encoded in absolute values as opposed to relative values. Nothing we can't fix. We could possibly release this to TQ shortly as an "experimental feature", allowing you to scale to 125%, 150% and so on. We would get your feedback on it, expose some defects and polish it further and then some patches later take off the experimental feature label. We could also wait, finish it completely and then release it, but that would mean we'd get feedback later and be more late reacting to your feedback. In any case, this is partially implemented and on the roadmap to be released.
Release early and rough and get complaints or wait until finished and get complaints?
My vote is early and rough as experimental, get mass feedback, and patch it based on real world use.

I don't agree with that, most of the flak CCP has been getting is related to unfinished and unpolished feature release, this will be another one to add to it, and eventually forgotten when resource allocation changes resulting in a never to be polished feature like many we have right now.
I rather a lot more to endure some downsides of this particular feature right now and have the confidence the work will continue as it set on feature adding milestones instead of not important category of bug fixing which are 2 different 'categories' in a development house, and we know how terrible it get's to pick up a not important bug fix in the long run.

CarbonUI is a much needed core update and I think it is critical to EVE moving forward. The last time they released a preview it was a beta feature on Singularity that could be enabled and disabled as desired through user preferences. It's going to happen but I think we'll all be better off if those that are willing to live with it, can live with it, to help it get finished that way we want and need it. It just needs to be an optional experimental feature. Rees Noturana // Professional Treasure Hunter |

CCP Punkturis,
I like the blog and I have a request and a question.
1. When you make font comparisons, please make the choice of the background colour scheme the same! It is very difficult to make a valid comparison when one is basically black/transparent an the other is kind of grey/translucent.
Please can you change the blog to show both font samples with the same colour scheme? If i had to choose one, I would go with the black scheme.
2. It feels that the new font has been 'streched' vertically somewhat, it makes reading it uncomfortable... very odd. Has the vertical to horizontal aspect ratio been tinkered with or is it just me?

No, the crap CCP is getting is for releasing crappy code as finished and tested, or releasing code that breaks completely unrelated (at least according to the patch notes) functionality (such as cargo capacity breaking when nothing related to cargo/skills was "fixed". |

Ok this new font idea is all well and good but why are we addressing fonts when there are real bugs to sort out like..... IDK ships turning into cloaky harbingers, or blues removed from overview suddenly showing up as neutrals. Shall i go on? Oh yeah and those lovely errors that got swept under rug like t3 not being able to jump through black ops with cov ops anymore that was "supposed to be fixed"... not to be a troll but seems like everything is always directed at fixing useless **** rather than real issues. The next expansion should be called all the stuff we haven't fixed since 2005 that should be sorted. Example people still showing logged on in your address book who are logged off, this bug still makes me laugh all these years and still broken.
Cmon CCP don't you get the simple fact quality over quantity will assure better numbers. Now i digress back to the font subject... Oh wait is this a bug being fixed for blind people??? Please sort out game play issues before wasting time on Fonts and pretty outfits. While i am happy ship spinning is back i find it amazing that the option to go from your standard hanger to your captains quarters wasn't there from day one... Seems like common sense. Im still waiting for modules that are out of balance to be fixed, idk like officer modules that are crappier than pirate mods, i.e caldari navy BCU vs Mizuro's Modified Piece of crap.. i can keep going on and on about real things that should be fixed but ill stop and turn it over to the flamers to flame away.... |

Not trolling and perhaps I am wrong.. I am not an optomitrist or a medical doctor.
I wonder how old you are ?
My understanding is that there is a very distinct change in the eyes at 40,, usually not 38.. it comes on quickly at 39 or 40 and goes continues for a few years from there.
My understanding is that POOR vision at a younger age is different.. you needed classes but you still had the abilty to quickly change your focus.
When you get older the problem isn't just your over all vision stregnth but the abilty to jump your eyes around and bring new things into focus and at different distances. Adjusting from 17 inches away to 26 inches (I've got mutiple monitors but even on one 24 inch there is a difference beetwen the distance of my face to the center of the screen and my face to the top right corner of more than a few inches takes time and glasses are designed to correct best at a certain distance....
Well anyway.. I hope that makes sense to you. If you had good vision up to 40 and needed subsequently worse glasses for a few years afterwords and find your glasses help you just as well at various differences, perhaps we do have different eyes. |

tbh, i could care less about a new font. You know what, i can open microsoft word and there are feckin loads of fonts in there, its not special. You could care less... so you aren't quite at the lower limit of your ability to care, then? And that's great you can open a word processing program and find fonts. I'm sure you can make great use of that skill in a desk job someday.
Skippermonkey wrote:Words dont fly my spaceships! Actually, for most players, the words 'Self Destruct' and 'Warp to 0m' are important for flying or not flying their spaceships. Being able to tell system names and other things apart is very much important to 'flying spaceships', since most of the controls in this game are through text-labeled context menus or tables. The infamous label of Spreadsheets Online, after all.
I guess you're just finding reasons to be whiny, really, so I should just ignore you... but it was fun poking your sentences.

I do like that eve now has a bigger better font, people will get used to it, change we can believe in! Just to comment on the topic if shortsightedness, I actually have a pretty terrible prescription (without my glasses, I can barely see clearly 6-to-12 inches in front of my nose), but I've not had any major issues with reading EVE Online's font, even on a 17" laptop screen that displays at 1920x1200. Gee another person with glasses not reading carefully and figuring sense they can read fine there isn't an issue.
Short sidedness is not the same thing as what people get when they get older.
when you are younger and need glasses you have a genetically wrong focal point based on eye shape.
Vision loss due to age is because a portion of your eye hardens making it difficult to focus quickly and basically at all close up.
The experience of a 25 year old using glasses and doing just fine and an 45 year old using prescription glasses and struggling aren't the same.
There is a diferent underlying problem.
Hyperopia vs Presbyopia
if you want to "get" a sense of it, think of using a zoom lens on a camera with auto focus.. .. the lens correct for the distance but you still need to focu.. the auto focus slowly brings the image to focus.. thats what we experience.
Loooking up from a book or looking from one edge of the screen to another .. or to another monitor meens that i need to wait a bit before it sharpens up... and for older people
... and you will ALL experience this as you age
making improvements to font legibilty (and ideally as discussed by others, scaling size) is a very CORE , not cosmetic part of the game.
I 've been able to play fine.. but its a bother, a strain, and an uncessasary one.
And, I'm in the pong generation... a large portion of people who played when they're young are going to keep at it.. older players will be an increasing segment of the customer base as time goes on. |

How about: CCP spends years trying to redevelop the wheel and ends up with one with a flat side to it because you can't adjust the size of the font in most places in the the game, which ends up being unreadably small on large monitors.
Or how about: Spends years re-developing the wheel, when there are plenty of FREE fonts out there that are easy to read that they could just have used.
Or how about, why not spend the time allowing the user to choose the font to use.
Still, you've got a job out of it, which is to be commended really, but frankly shows that CCP is willing to fritter away money when they don't really need to.
Sorry to be a party-pooper, but the new font is largely useless to those of us that use a large monitor if you can't change the size of the text on many parts of the UI. |

"Snow tutorials" (or is it "tutonals"?) "Snow infiicted nit notifications" etc etc
I would not call this font particularly readable just from that picture alone.
Basically, all the "high" letters, such as h, d, b, t, f, look pretty much terrible. And the combination of "ri" looks atrocious.
I believe licensing a font from professional typographers would have been a much better solution. And i was not aware CCP was in typography business.. |

And, I'm in the pong generation... a large portion of people who played when they're young are going to keep at it.. older players will be an increasing segment of the customer base as time goes on. I certainly wasn't intending to say the game didn't need a new font; I've voiced my own agreement that making it more readable is a long-awaited boon to the game... I just felt like commenting on the fact that I've not had issues, even on screens with notoriously low PPI/DPI ratings, like laptop screens. At 17" and 1920x1200, that's less than 2/3rds what most standard PC monitors would allow, since the ideal sizes for 1920x1200 are in the 24"-26" range.
In any case, I would like to see them do a better job with this new font. As others have noted, it does still have a number of flaws. I think that it should be pointed out in a devBlog that this is only a stop-gap as CCP continues work on CarbonUI, which, as one of the Devs already noted in this thread, should introduce more malleability in terms of font settings, and clear up some of the whining about them still not allowing such adjustments and just throwing in another font. Seeing it on SISI I've enjoyed it overall. It's a more comfortable reading experience, 100%. It feels "large" sometimes, and I'm not sure if that's just my personal preference, or just something to get used to as time goes on. As personal preference, I could go for about 10% smaller size - I know there are plenty of other folks who would like it larger even.
There are still some places it still doesn't quite fight snuggly yet, or some things need to be adjusted. I'm sure these will be worked out during the *cough* QA.
i.e. : Character names in Chat aren't bolded, making it difficult to separate Characters from their Chat message.
There are some places, I think that the form of the interface is still molded to the old font which is less vertical - and there is a challenge there. I took a screenshot of some issues in the character sheet which I want to point it out.

But when you're a vet with all the skills in a specific category, and it's just a wall of information that's difficult to decipher and view clearly - especially when you're a bit tired or maybe in a rush. Some deliberate spacing in the right places would go a long way.

I have to say that I have had no problem reading the old font.
Maybe that's due to the size of the monitor I use. I don't know.
However, the new font is definitely easier on the eyes though a little ugly and thin.
One thing I have noticed is the decimal point or lack thereof. I squinted at the screen and it actually is there but rendered so small as to be all but invisible. Not a show stopper I will admit ; for example, distance to the next way point (in AU) seems to have grown by a factor of 10 i.e. 433 Au instead of 43.3 AU. |

It is not the time of 800* 600 anymore, I think the new font is better but still not big enogh.Text must be big enough to allow players to play without digging their faces into the screen.
I know there will be problem of not enough space to display the UI, but that is the problem of UI design itself and should not remain covered by using tiny font.
I know you are in difficult time and had to fire people, but meanwhile I really think you should hire some new UI guy who actually know UI design. Terrible UI of EVE had always been a huge problem and had cost you many many potential subs.
Every UI can be made simple, clear and pleasant to use. If an UI seems too complicated and hard to use and have to use tiny font to hold itself within the screen, it is simply ill-designed.

This. Seriously. If Evemail still can not resize the text I will again return to wondering if this is 2011 or 1991. People are running the game on really high resolutions now, while even on a 900p laptop it's too small. People with real and impressive screens shouldn't be forced to view the same low number of pixels as people on small / laptop screens. |

New font is way too big for my windowed mode 1280x768. I'm playing on 22" monitor with native 1680x1050 resolution.
With new font my overview target list can hold probably 30% less targets and same goes for scanner, chat lists etc.
And because I was already hoping -smaller- font to show more stuff on overview it's kind of bad. It isn't really cool when your oveview can show like 5 targets.
Also I liked the old font better, EXCEPT zero.
Context menu font size 10 is too big and 9 feels a bit difficult to read for some reason. Size 9 is ok, but readability is kind of bad. |

I don't like the new font at all, fact is I think it's horrible.
However a lot of people seem to like it, and I understand why it needs to be changed, but I don't think this is the right font for the job. In some places it's bulky and very heard to use, in some it's weird looking and heard to read, this font confuses me and it's taking me more time to navigate menus.
I suggest something more like the current font on the live server with some small edits to some letters and numbers that are often confused for each other to make them more clearly different, not changing the the entire font in every menu.
Infact at first I thought my client window had been hacked or something when I saw a cheap looking font, it all looked very botched and I was concerned, and did not want to login for fear of some sort of hacked fake patch.
Clearly that is not the case as I looked it up on the forums here and my fears were put to rest. But the fact it drew concern means there is something wrong with the change.
I've said my peace, now I will shut up and leave it to CCP. |

Awesome! I can't wait to see it in action, dancing across my UI, syncronizing in patterns, readable words!
This will greatly enhance readablility in EVE, as it has been somewhat vacant before.
Also; I kind of miss that square-y-ness that the old font has. It gives a certain "futuristic-space-feeling". From a designers / typographers point of view, that futuristic-space-feeling belongs in EVE. As the UI is designed to be sharp, square and "strict", the font should reflect this as well. The font is just as important part of the UI as any other design element.
Roundness is great, but too much would change the feel of the UI in it's entirety.
I approve highly of a new font. Just giving some constructive criticism. Keep up the good work! |

The old font has more of a EVE, or rather Sci-Fi Tech feel to me. In my opinion, this new font looks atrocious to me; it looks like I'm staring at an essay with a bad font.
Anyway, I do hope there will be an option to use the old or new fonts. |

Thanks.
I read by the word, and some have been illegible, after a year I could not recognise all of the words in eve font.
I am looking forward to reading a word, rather than saying the letters out like a tard.

Never a dull moment, always a pleasure to see what's happening.
Can't wait to have the faster, easy read font, and see CCP go from strength to strength.
This will help with the local channel chat box comments, and help me effect other players better too.
Thanx. Getting you on your feet.

New font looks absolutely terrible. Worst part of this patch. It is really a shame that CCP is refusing to listen to their customers on this. Thousands have posted that they hate this new font yet CCP Punkturis continues to think he is awesome.

Totally agree. This font is badly designed and the former smaller font gave a much better look and feel. Especially in chat the font looks totally crap. I am wondering: is CCP blind not to realize and fix this? |

Hated B8& etc issues and loved that this was being addressed. That said, why apply it beyond its scope? My eyes hurt. The only area where this was an issue (99.231%) was in the chat windows. If this change applied solely to chat windows I'd be over the moon. As it is I'm now desperate for options to 1. Switch between Proper case and UPPER CASE, 2. Change the font of all non-chat text... :( Loving all other elements of the deployment that I've had a chance to experience thus far. It was another feature that we rushed out the door before it was ready. |

I understand the reasoning behind it, but i really dislike the new font. My eyes are literally sore. Please give us an options of displaying it in the old or new style, or an option to choose a font that WE like. |

Told you before launch, told you on test forums, telling you again now. The new font is not a good choice. Only in bold does it look decent (barely). Of the over 50,000 unique fonts, you chose the one that looks like old typewriter or dot matrix print. Plain old Arial, or Ventura would have been far better. Maybe even Avante.
Or hey!! Here is a thought, give us multiple fonts, and let us chose!!! "...its breakfast time and i am very hungry. may i have some of your paint chips?" |

Nope, you'll only be able to change the size of the context menu, as before.
And you thought this was a good idea?
The default size on my screen is now too large... the text eats up massive amounts of space all over my screen now, the worst offender being the market window. The new larger font greatly reduces the amount of information viewable in the same screen real estate than the previous font.
The ability to select a smaller font size for the overview is a start, but you need to make the default font size adjustable globally, not just the context menus and the overview.
And no, I don't want to scale the whole UI, just the base font size.

Terrible new font. While it is more "readable" it looses alot of the style that is EVE Online. I feel like everything is gigantic. Scaling the UI to 90% makes everything much to small.
Yes I can make out the chars 6G& now, but now I have lines of texts such as in the market, chat tabs, etc where the text is much too large for the space provided. I think if the height of the font were scaled down about 10-20% it'd make things much easier on the eyes. |

You know what? At first I thought that the new font lacked this "space-feel" that the old one had. But it kinda grows on me. Now I think that the new font looks great ingame, the readability is greately enhanced and it kinda looks good as well.
I'd only wish that CCP would put a little "air" around some of the text elements. Such as put a little height on top of, and beneath different list-type elements. For example the training que. It is now so compact that it is difficult to read correctly.
So CCP: Put a little air everywhere and the new font will be a breeze :) |
