Whenever I open the new Incursion client everything runs as normal. My client shows me how many people are on TQ. When I login It just stays on authenticating until it times out. Any suggestions? I'm on a college network...but I had no troubles logging in yesterday (before incursion) Thanks in advance!

Response from GM:
We've seen reports about this, but we're unsure what is causing this issue.
Could you please run the game with logserv running and reproduce the problem and send us the logserv file. Reproduction step are very important part of the report. Write exactly what you did to make the problem happen. This will help the programmers see where the problem is, and hopefully make it happen on their own computers. Reproduction steps are required for your report to be useful, even if you have attached logs to your report.
Using the logserver (to minimize problems with this, its recommended that you either restart your computer or check Task managers process list for unresponsive instances of Eve.exe)
1. Find your Eve folder in Windows Explorer 2. When you have the Eve folder open, find "logserver.exe" and launch it (Do NOT have EVE running) 3. Select "File" -> "New Workspace" 4. Start Eve like you would normally do 5. When you have reproduced the bug, Eve crashes or when you kill the process if it hangs, select "File" -> "Save workspace as..." and save the workspace in a place you'll find it again.
============================
so everybody having this issue, please do those steps and upload the file to some file site, and post a link to that on this thread for the GMs, so this can get fixed sooner.

Think I'm going to stick with the "it's the network code" explanation here, NetOps doesn't give a **** what we do with their network as long as we don't crash it or do filesharing.
And, of course, as long as we pay our tuition.
EDIT: Uh, I need food and this doesn't look to be getting fixed anytime soon, so I could come up to the CC nowish.

I'm also having problems logging in from my campus network at St Cloud State. Some times I get the socket closed error, some times I make it to character selection only to have it stop there, and now I'm working on entering the game for the past 5 minutes, and still stuck on a black screen.
I've sent in a petition - Couldn't add my logserver file though, as the petition page doesn't seem to like me uploading files. I suppose I'll toss in a bug report and see if I can send them in that way.

Edited by: CCP Warlock on 01/12/2010 01:53:25 Well. This definitely looks weird from our end. I've checked our logs, and some player logs/traces - it looks like the disconnect occurs immediately after the cryptographic handshake - but there is nothing else on our side to say why.
Having it work after waiting a while, is decidedly on the strange side - and my immediate thought is some kind of routing issue - but that's rather unlikely with several sites.
If any of you are using VPN software or are aware of anything like that being used in your environment, could you post any details you're aware of with respect to software etc.
As you can tell, i'm grasping for straws at the moment.

In terms of the inner workings of the WPI network, I unfortunately know very little. All I know is that I can ping Tranquility server with no packet loss. Additionally, I don't have any VPN software installed on my computer.

That's what I'm thinking. I know WPI NetOps will let almost any traffic through, but they're touchy about ports. If the game is using any additional ports, there's a good chance that the network is blocking them.

I work in the IT Department at a small university in Indiana and when I tried to login to swap skills I got the same error, but it worked fine when I tried it on my home network.
Same laptop, different network.
I know we're blocking P2P so it could be that somehow EVE is getting picked up as P2P by our systems.
I don't work with the traffic shaper myself but I can talk to the person who does tomorrow.
just an idea...

Yes, I was thinking about that because, in addition to EVE, I'm also an avid Sins of a Solar Empire player and I have never been able to connect to Ironclad online to host a game. I know that game utilizes a few ports that are typically not opened on routers (had to forward them on my home router), and so I have to direct connect when I play SOASE MP at school. I'm thinking Incursion added an additional port reference and that's why we can't connect on our school networks.

Kent State student falling in from Ohio. Been having these issues since the test server. Started acting up in the second to last iteration before deployment if that helps. As for VPN software, I'm using a crappy Cisco Clean Access Agent client to connect with the internet. I can supply details if needed. ------------------ I'm not sure if my eyes are actually bleeding, or if it's merely my brain bleeding out through my eye sockets, but either way, it hurts to read what you just wrote |

WPI has a VPN (information here), but it's only used for allowing students and staff to access software that is hosted on the school network. Anyone living on-campus should have their own dedicated IP address and internet connection, and no need to use the VPN. I spoke to someone up at the CC earlier when I grabbed dinner, and he said that NetOps is certainly aware of the issue, but he didn't say if they knew if it was something on their end or not. I guess people have been mailing them about it already. :P
I've tried the waiting workaround, but it hasn't worked for me at all, unfortunately, so I'm more or less stuck until a fix is found.

In order to use port 3724, it will be necessary to open your prefs.ini file. You can find the file in the following location.
Press Windows Key + R and paste the following line into the Run window.
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\CCP\EVE\c_program_files_ccp_eve_tranquility if you use Windows XP %LOCALAPPDATA%\CCP\EVE\c_program_files_(x86)_ccp_eve_tranquility if you use Windows Vista.
Edit thr PREFS.INI file and change port=26000 to port=3724 Save the file and then launch the client and try connect.
It didn't work for me, but it was worth a try

Kansas State student here - same problem. Wtflux? Why college networks? My college has anti-torrenting features in place that prevent us from torrenting without using Tor to get around it. Could this be interfering with EVE?

I bet it has something to do with the "resnet" software. From doing a quick google search it seems that most colleges use it. I may be wrong though.

I can confirm that resnet is used in at least some capacity at WPI (though I believe a heavily modified version). This is something to definitely consider.

Yeah, Resnet is dumb. I hate it. I had a Euro version of Windows 7 installed on my pc and they wouldn't authorize it because it was a Euro version. Resnet is ebil - and that's what I was talking about as far as the torrenting stuff. Resnet blocks it.

But yeah I can confirm that Kent State in Ohio also uses resnet software. Infact, they're so lazy here, they call the whole department ResNet. 23 people reporting issues from campuses so far. (If I counted right...)
Possible work around Here. I've had success just starting the client and letting it set for at least 15 minutes before trying to log in.

OpenVPN may work for people, if they want an English language version.

Yeah they do the same here. So I'll be going down there after my first classes tomorrow and seeing what they say. I'll post what they say and whatnot. It'll be interesting to hear their excuse this time. "Oh, you're using the European client" or some such nonsense. I'm about 75% sure this is a ResNet problem and not a CCP problem.

I'm a CS fresher myself. Haven't phoned them yet, but at least my connection is stable most of the time. Hangs occasionally when I download anything over a gigabyte. They're nice and friendly, and apparently like to scan what I download. Nice to know the money sink that is our awful internet can be used however we like.
At least my skills were long too, but I'd like to be able to set up some production lines and whatever else. I'll drop you a message if I get any response from Hornet. Might see if anyone else has had this issue, too.

I've contacted some of the universities listed (not gotten the best responses so far but one was promising) and we're trying to find out what specifically is alerting on the Eve client communications. My assumption (which may prove wrong) is that we're generating a false positive in some bandwidth management or IDS signatures.
Your best results at your schools (Not WPI we've been in touch with them and they're super helpful) will be to contact your support departments at the schools yourself and have them create an exemption. Bonus points if you can get them to email me at and explain to me what product is flagging on the Eve client so that we can work on getting that fixed.
Thanks a bunch guys |

Sir, I <3 you. However, I went down to ResNet today to see what I could find out and it looks like they're just gonna sit on their hands here at K-State. I don't really blame the guys working at ResNet, just the dumb policies that we have in place. Thanks again, CCP. You really are the best at customer support that I've seen in a video game. I just took a look, and it appears that my port 26000 (for eve) is blocked, which could be causing this. I will contact ResNet and see if I can get the problem resolved, but I would be willing to bet they can't do a thing (too inept).

Hi!
We have made a small change to the test server Singularity for the moment (deactivated client updates), which might change or remove the problem.
Could you please try to connect to Singularity, if you have this problem at the moment on TQ?
Singularity is currently running the same version as TQ, so you don't need any patch. You can either use SisiLauncher for connecting, follow the instructions at http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Singularity or just create a shortcut to the TQ client with "/server:Singularity" in the target-line (but make sure to delete the shortcut again after the test to avoid patching your TQ client with future Singularity patches).

Just tried, didn't seem to help at all.
After leaving the client open for awhile I was actually able to log in like someone else posted, but as soon as I logged out the error was once again occurring (I only stayed on for about a minute, and this was with the same client I successfully logged in with). Not sure if it helps at all, but it seems that this occurs only when the client is left open and not tabbed out, but if you tab out it won't let you in.

PS: My college network kills BitTorrent packets. Perhaps this is the problem? Could EVE's packets be being flagged as BT packets?

Originally by: Bacon Baron Edited by: Bacon Baron on 01/12/2010 17:38:33 I too am having this problem, at a university as well (California).
I just took a look, and it appears that my port 26000 (for eve) is blocked, which could be causing this. I will contact ResNet and see if I can get the problem resolved, but I would be willing to bet they can't do a thing (too inept).
I will post back when I have a result.
EDIT: Just called in. As far as I can tell, the port are (and have been) blocked, so that's not the issue. The problem probably lies in the authentication part of the log in, but I have no idea what it is. It obviously has something to do with the recent update though.
Cal Poly?
Also I'm trying it out on the test server, I'll edit with my results.
Indeed, SLO.
I just updated and logged in successfully from my laptop OUTSIDE my dorm. I will test my dorm connection again when I get back.
I contacted our network and they won't help us with the problem...so we are dead in the water until we figure out a work around or CCP figures out why the network is blocking it.

Helpdesk can't really do anything about it other than ***** and moan at Netops to fix the problem so they stop getting tickets about it. It'd be Netops (and maybe the IT department, if they're two separate entities) you would probably want to contact as a student if you want any sort of useful answer.
EDIT: Tried getting onto Sisi, still getting the socket closed error.

I'd like to point out that EvE worked before the patch, something changed with regard to how information is sent over the network during the login process, and that should be changed back. - I remember reading something about offloading requests to character nodes instead of to the local node. Could something about this offload/redirected traffic be flagged as p2p behaviour? (and was this change even implemented in this patch?).

This isn't always true. My suitemates and I had a problem with lag spikes at the beginning of the year and I (nicely) contacted Netops about the problem and they had it fixed within a couple of hours...and no it wasn't as simple as resetting the router in the dorm. Anyways, I would like to know if Sreegs had some sarcasm in his comment about the WPI IT department; I really don't know how they'd react to a video game company contacting them...lol.

I know this is something that's frustrating for you guys, but I want to make sure I'm being clear about the fact that this doesn't appear to be something wrong with Eve. A particular vendor has decided that Eve traffic is actually Bit Torrent traffic and has written signatures which cause our traffic to be blocked. I'm working with the vendor in question to have them fix their signatures as Eve traffic is clearly not Bit Torrent traffic.
This is something that happens fairly regularly with signature-based security applications. Hopefully they'll have an update soon. |

Hmm. So the vendor changed signature detection rules for universites all over the world simultaenously with the incursion patch? That dosen't seem likely. EvE's doing something different, and thats what's causing it to get flagged as p2p. I'm not saying EvE is doing anything wrong, only whatever was changed has caused this problem.

Whether something was changed or not Eve is not Bit Torrent traffic. We can't simply halt development on the game because some vendor somewhere might have a signature which will false positive on our software. We also can't be certain what's flagging the signature without talking to the vendor as some security companies consider signatures trade secrets.
I don't know at this time WHO made the change. I only know who is causing Eve not to work and they are working on figuring it out. |

Well, I don't want to add insult to injury, but I haven't been able to log in for at least a week now, and am losing SP. I clearly do not want to pay for time I am not playing. It would be one thing if I made an error, and got banned, or if I did not have a skill training while I had a suspended account, but I am paid for 6 months, and not playing because after the incursion patch, I am not able to log in. Please consider giving credit for missed days, or suspend my account immediately and refund unused play time. I will keep checking back for a solution, and will log in again when it's running. Thanks. Sorry the software is not working on university networks. |

It's more likely that some changes in the network code for the client are causing already-established rules in the vendor's software to flag the client's traffic as BitTorrent traffic, rather than this being some freak-of-nature simultaneous update.
Until the issue(s) are resolved, I'm able to get ingame using a VPN to change skills and chat with corpmates and friends ingame, so that's good enough for me for now.
Much love to CCP Warlock, Hypnotic, Sreegs and Habakuk (and of course the unnamed ones that haven't posted to the thread yet) for taking the time to help us get back ingame. Also to the GMs and BH folks who've been handling our petitions and bug reports - you know who you are. <3

I disagree.
It's not halting development on the game. It's making sure you only roll out patches AFTER you have assured they are compatible with vendors, and pausing PUBLIC updates if you find they aren't. And development of the game includes making sure it works on all platforms, anyway.
I'm willing to bet you would revert a patch if, say, the Windows OS updated and EVE stopped working, and it would only work on Macs.
This is more a matter of "it isn't affecting THAT many players, so it's not the highest priority", isn't it? I'm not saying you should totally roll back the patch for a relatively small group of players, but you should at least take into consideration temporarily reverting back to the old system until you fix it, or providing the option to players as to how they are going to connect.
Could you revert the connection system, or the entire patch, on the test server at least? This way, we can confirm it IS the change that is flagging, and the vendors have not changed a thing.
Props to getting this fixed, by the way - Don't want to come across as criticising, just curious.

Thank you CCP for having awesome support staff!
Edit: Just sent the school an email, i'll post back if they reply
I already called the ResNet technicians, and they (clearly) stated that it was a problem on Eves side, and they have changed nothing.
At this point, we can conclude that universities did not decide to block Eve, but something changed with either the Incursion patch (which worked for me at first, no problem) or the way that these college networks are detecting traffic (as believed).

Like Blank said, lets use sisi with the last version of tyrannis.
If we can connect without using vpn/ssh, we'll know the change is on eve's end. If we can't connect, some software used by the universities is blocking it.
I'm not suggesting EVE's code is doing anything wrong at all. While not wanting to tell you how to do your job, if some change to the connection script is causing an issue (and I assume there were changes made to the script - as it no longer checks for patches when you log in, only when you open the client?) and there's no guarantee the universities will EVER fix a false positive, wouldn't it be prudent to change it back? At least until the issue is dealt with?
For those of you who haven't been able to log in.. I spent a few hours connected earlier with only slight lag using a vpn - I posted the link earlier in the thread. (So this issue is only mildly frustrating to me).

as the above guy said, im not trying to negatively criticise, and I really appreciate all the work and time ya'll put into this CCP. but i was thinking about reverting the game on the test server, or even a half-way done quasi test server. just to check the thing. coordinate with someone in a university who is being affected by this, whoever's change it was, and spend a few hours trying different things.
the key to to troubleshooting isn't finding the problem. its finding what DOES work. implement 1/2 of the patch. if it works you know its the other half. if it doesn't you know its that part u implemented. then take the bad 1/2 and implement 1/2 of that. divide and conquer till you single out the trouble portion(s). idk how much work it might take to set something up on your end CCP, but i'd be more than willing to hop on an IM client or vent or teamspeak and keep trying to log and sending you wireshark files. as im sure a lot of people on this thread would be willing to help out like that.

Whatever gets me back to feeding my addiction.
Somehow I managed to stay logged in long enough to clone jump to highsec, travel 5 jumps to Jita, and buy a ship from the market. Each command/system load took anywhere from 1-4 minutes, until I got to Jita where it took 15 minutes to load the system, then 6 minutes between sending a warp command, warping to the 4-4 station, and eventually crashing when I attempted to dock. I logged back in to find myself in the station, but it took me 6-8 minutes per step to search for the ship, select the ship from the search menu, load the prices, load the buy window, and finally buy the thing.
Normally I wouldn't spend half an hour on buying a ship, but it's been two days, and I'm happy with snorting the tiny amounts of Eve-Crack that have been spilt on the floor.
And they're coming to take me away, haha!

I know we're blocking P2P so it could be that somehow EVE is getting picked up as P2P by our systems.

Sweet.
In case you need a working college, Arizona State University can log in just fine (doesn't use ResNet I don't think), as my friend there was playing last night (and annoying me about it).

Have not been able also to play since the patch was released. i have been able to log in once or twice taking around 15 minutes to actually get into the game and around 15 minutes to allow me to set my skills.
I hope this fixes my issue as well. The bit torrent scenario makes sense.
I hope this is fixed soon as i have been playing this game for quiet a long time and have had 0 problems so i know its not a problem i can fix =/

We've answered this in the news item on the subject. There's a traffic shaping tool many universities use that is mislabeling Eve traffic as BitTorrent traffic. The vendor pushed out a signature update this Monday that should fix the problem. In the meantime if your school contacts support for the vendor in question they will provide them with updated signatures. If they have any questions they're welcome to email me at and I'll tell them exactly what the issue is.
Part of the reason we made the news item, aside from letting you guys know what's going on, is so you'd have something "official" to send to your IT departments and they wouldn't think you're just trying to steal a bunch of anime or something on the internet.
:edit: More full disclosure... I've had mixed results contacting universities. In reality I'm not their customer, you are. I'm just some guy with a NY accent calling them from Reykjavik asking them questions about their network which isn't always all that well received. |

I'm working from a home machine here, same issues. For a while I've been getting all the nice display bars of a login to SiSi and then none of the tasty character screen afterward. I click "Connect" again and the game says it can't connect with the server, then thickly implies that this is my fault.
And I am using SiSiLauncher, I tried manually installing an update from my old SiSi copy and all that it did was turn the Singularity version into Tranquility. I WTF'd and gave up.
I did manage a connection the first time I tried but I had to reboot that because the graphics settings were too high.
Now Singularity isn't letting me connect at all, game says the server can't be found and status reads Unknown.
Perhaps I should make a separate thread. -

That's happening to me as well. Not sure if it's related to this, but it started happening about the same time.

This is a radical idea I forgot to mention, perhaps the Singularity server is just down now. I don't know anyone who regularly logs into SiSi, so I can't check that this is true though. -

Interesting. I am logging in just fine from my dorm (north mountain), but the location on campus shouldn't matter (although I was able to log in from WiFi on Wednesday, so perhaps it does if they are on different servers).
That or I had a fluke like Wednesday night when I logged in for 5 minutes as a test.
EDIT: Confirming it was a fluke. Just tried to log in again, and it won't pass authentication. Very interesting.

I just got done talking to my tech support department for my college and they said that eve is now coming across the firewall as a bit torrent. The firewall blocks bit torrents automaticlly at most colleges so you have to tell your schools tech support department and they will have to make a new filter to allow eve thorugh the firewall. I was told it can take about two weeks to do this.

You may be misunderstanding as this typically isn't a firewall function, but if it IS indeed their firewall I'd REALLY like to talk to them. If they're willing to email I might be able to help them sort through it. Coincidentally 2 weeks is the patch release cycle for the product we thus far believe to be the source of the problem. |

Still cannot log in. We need an update. I see this post moving down on the list, so that means nothing is moving forward. A few more days without info will make me wonder if CCP considers my business worthwhile. I may have to cancel my account, and get a refund. I know I have been saying it, but I am allowing them time to fix the problem. Since I am not moving anytime soon, I will have to cancel my subscription if there is no resolution. It's that simple. In the grand scheme, they may not even care about me, but enough views of this post, might get others to reconsider CCP. I will cancel subscription as well if CCP cannot fix this until weekend.
It doesn't make any sense to keep paying a game which is not playable. |

I, as with many others here, am unable to log in on my college's network after the Incursion update. It says "Authenticating" with a slowly scrolling loading bar. Once it fills, a pop up says that the "Socket has been closed". Rather frustrating since I'm losing game time that I'm *paying* for. It's been a little over a week since the Incursion release. Hopefully there's a fix soon or I'll have to cancel my account.
I'm at WSU (the 'W' standing for Winona, not Washington).

Just got home, stuck on downloading Bulk 5/46
fist time I've had a problem, and tried restarting router, clearing cache, disabling sound etc etc.
Nothing seems to work, and as other people are getting the exact same problem, I doubt it's at my end.

Having the same problems here at GSU in Statesboro, Ga. Authentication keeps going until socket closed pops up, hopefully this gets resolved fast, losing SP here due to my skill queue running out just after the first incursion patch day |

This is absolutely, undeniably, the most absurd thing I have ever heard. Honestly, you are asking us, and blaming us for your changeto the game play? For your adding a 7th bit of code that is now flagging us as p2p traffic. For your problem, I say, "No, I will not ask my administrators to relax their security, gumming up the already crowded internet traffic bandwidth". They are, after all, protecting their network. It is you CCP, who are at fault. It is you CCP, who have decided to change the way you play, and it is you, CCP, that must correct the problem. To try to put the blame on us as your paying customers is absurd. For you to ask us to fix our own problem is obnoxious. I will tell you this. If this problem is not fixed on Monsay, as you claim (one Monday having gone by already), you will leave me no choice but to quit, and to post all of this misgivings as publicly as possible. There is space in my heart to help you. To report bugs, to report performance, and to aid in getting you the data required to move forward, but there is no room to make this problem my own. I did nothing wrong, and I do not pay you to make me work for a repair.

Hey guys we said the latest this should be fixed is Monday. That's when the vendor pushes the updated signatures to their clients (your schools). If you can get your school's admins to contact support for their p2p filtering solution they have a signature ready for them that will fix it which they have to apply. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok I need to add an addendum to this... The updates are released by the vendor on Monday. It is up to the administrator of the device to update their devices. One would hope that your administrators would want to update their signatures but we have no way of forcing them to do so.
So, while it may not be what you all want to hear it's the facts as they stand. We don't control your school's networks and we are not their customer, you are, so it will be up to you guys to pressure them to get this done if they don't do it in a timely fashion. I'd recommend linking them this thread and they can email me if they have questions. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

December 15th and I still cannot connect.
I have had a petition opened formally since the 9th, but the problem started with the first incursion patch of course.
I have had to log in off campus briefly to change my skill queue and manufacturing, but even that is getting old. My university (Montana State University) staff said its not their problem and they said any other games working will continue to do so as is...
I wanted to badly to blame my University's IT department for this but when they said they don't block any traffic to 87.237.38.200:26000, I do in fact believe them. Sorry CCP but this one rests squarely on your shoulders.
I guess this means I will have to cancel all three of my eve accounts since I can't actually play from my residence. I guess its a good time to go back to WoW now that Cataclysm is live.
