The ôCreate A Starshipö contest has returned and you have the final vote. Submissions will be accepted at the official contest page through December 21, 2010 and voting will start on December 22, 2010 and end on January 8, 2010.
Players will be competing for cash, one-year subscription to EVE Online, and various other prizes. For full details of The Final Vote click here.
FAQ
Will the winner of this contest automatically be included in the game? No. Due to a packed production schedule of ships and other art next year we cannot guarantee the winner goes in before 2012. Seriously, the art schedule is packed. However the CCP Art team reserves the right to change their mind and find room to allow a truly gorgeous piece in.
Why are you having another contest, but not including the winner in the game? Our fans have said they want to vote on a larger group of ships, weÆd like to accommodate those fans. WeÆd also like to recognize and reward the awesome efforts of creators who make new ships designs. Yes there is a secret prize for all semi-finalists. No we wonÆt tell you what is.
How will I vote on the semi-finalists after the 21st? The Facebook ôLikeö button will be the vote mechanism.
ôCCP will prejudge entrants to semi-final roundà,ö what does that mean? CCP will be filtering out many entrants that donÆt have color renders and orthogonal views. WeÆll also be policing illustrations to the idea of fitting the EVE universe. Your line drawing of the ôFett Mach Sevenö, while kewl, is not we want to represent the EVE universe with. Sorry.

I am liking this part especially! I was sad to see you didn't do more models for Incursion after the scorp remodel, good to know you are still doing things! CCP are so winning lately, what an awesome part-expansion, learning skills soon, with more content still to come! I dearly <3 this game.

Who gives a crap about designing a ship that won't be used in-game?
Considering that most existing ships in Eve look like they were designed by a ******ed rhesus monkey, I don't really see why we should expect anything different to win; CCP will just "prejudge" out anything that doesn't look equally absurd.

Two questions:
1) As someone else said, please clarify what is required for the six views. Is subtle shading (but not full color) to emphasize shapes allowed? Are plain grayscale renders of a 3d model allowed (and if not, please consider changing your mind and allowing them)? This was a major point of confusion with the deviantart contest.
2) How will the voting be handled for this contest? Specifically what will be done to prevent abuse of the system? For example, voting with multiple accounts, trial accounts, etc. Or, less dishonestly, turning the contest into a popularity contest where the most important part of winning is running a proper publicity campaign on the forums (and of course finishing early enough to do this ASAP), alliance leaders ordering their entire alliance to vote for the leader's submission, etc? -----------

I must say, I am pleasantly shocked and pleased that CCP actually responded to our outcry at the Deviantart contest failing.
This is wondrous news indeed...it means CCP actually took our petitions seriously in the manner. Meaning that the community does infact have a say in matters. Thanks CCP!!
I am very happy to see this contest done anew and I am very happy that the whole thing will be hosted by CCP and CCP alone this time. Way to go! Brilliant!

Does this mean that it is guaranteed for 2012 sometime, or is it just maybe 2012? The entrants would no doubt be satisfied if it was guaranteed to happen at some point (with a rough estimate of when), even if it's not soon.

That's my point! it can't be submitted if it doesn't follow the rules :P
But it's not really clear. well I thought it was clear, so I did mine with line work.
but then over 805 of the submissions were models
(modeling is easier I would of done it that way >.<)
so just a quick rules clarification would be nice.

It seems pretty straightforward. If you want to vote on the new ship, you have to use Facebook. This is an advertising campaign, as most contests are. Doesn't make a lot of sense to advertise just to EVE players does it?

Last time I asked the DA team specifically that question- Was the minor shading I did to indicate depth going to get me disqualified or not?
They said no, and I was not disqualified... I'm thinking (Even though it was the DA team who told me this) this fact will remain the same. We're probably okay. Would be good to have confirmation though. - Battle Dust Proposal |

I have a request for the CCP art team. Since you decided go with an outside site for the voting, propably because letting non-EVE players vote on the finalists worked so well the first time. Well anyway, since you prescreen the proposals before facebook users get to dictate what EVE players might fly in the future, FFS disqualify all designs you feel are not good fits for EVE. As in, they have no chance of winning even if they get voted to the finals.
The reason being, that actual EVE players will propably be the minority voters in facebook, so don't let anything in to the semifinals, that you aren't already willing to put in EVE. Most voters aren't EVE players and won't give a crap about voting for fitting designs, so you will need to eliminate them in the first screening. That means disqualify with extreme prejudice all non-EVE designs, joke ships and technically poorly designed ships. The absolute bottom end of the semifinalists should be average looking designs, that would still fit the EVE universe just fine with minor tweaks. This leaves loads of room for taste, but removes the chance of having a similar fiasco with the designs as we had last time.
Good luck to everyone taking part in the competition.

This was one of the better entries of the 'epic fail' contest. I'm gonna be hard pressed to top that as i finally have the time to actually make my own dream ship a reality.
I'm thinking my T3 battleship i'm inspired in this case by the SR-2 (NO IT WILL NOT BE A CLONE) But its sleek insanely smooth lines make that ship a piece of art. It'll fit nicely with the gallente.
I have a few other ideas but that's the one i'm going to be focusing on. Thank you CCP incursion is looking to be your best roll out of an expansion to date and this is only further upping the bar. I only hope my own final designs can compete with what will be an intense field.

So this is supposed to be a contest in which EVE population gets to vote on what suits them best but the voting mechanism is using Facebook? No connection to our EVE characters or accounts? SERIOUSLY??
Maybe in 2011 you could make it mandatory to have a Facebook and Twitter account to play the game, that would be lovely...

Even if this is done from the web site, from what I understand clicking on the Facebook "like" button on another website requires the Facebook platform application to be enabled on the voter's account for it to work. If that is the case, then I won't be able to vote at all because I refuse to turn that on for security & privacy reasons.

Ok, so forgive me for asking what is likely a completely ******ed question. I'm really tired and starting to get sick, so my reading comprehension is probably a bit on the low side right now...
Does this contest supersede the (disaster) DA contest? Or is this a contest in addition to and irrespective of the DA contest? Is the Tornado still in? Is it up again? See I'm confused.
My thought upon reading this was that the Tornado won the DA contest, is in as that winner (whenever you all can get to it), and that this is a new thing (but likely having many of the old but great DA entries that got screwed) and we get to vote this time. Do I have this right? As I said up front, sorry if this is a completely wasted question due to my fail at reading comprehension.
Oh, I should say... I'm not an artist, can't even draw a crooked line, but I paid close attention to the DA contest and general uproar over the results. Tornado was nice, and I liked some of the other DA semi-finalists, but I felt the majority of them missed the mark of being suitable for EVE. I did see a large number of excellent designs (I really liked that Aquilon gallente ship...) that didn't make the semi cut. If this is an opportunity for those excellent submissions to receive a second chance, great job CCP. No really, we the players have a better eye for what belongs in EVE than those DA fools. And to all the artists, I mean, I'm in awe since I can't draw. I'm really pleased you all will have another go at this.

The latter. It's going to have its own implications. It will not unfortunately supercede the dA contest.

No you have it right that's exactly how this will happen. Even better. People can redo or refine their designs further.

I appreciate the reply Konoch. I'm glad my fuzzy brain apparently DID understand what my eyes took in. I had a moment of "hang on, is CCP just undoing the DA contest or is this an extension or... damn, my head hurts."
Originally by: Konoch That's exactly what's happening and thank you. I was disappointed then relieved i hadnt entered the first. Now i have a chance to show what I can do. I'm looking forward to the challenge.
You and all the other artists have my support. I am seriously the least talented artist on the planet. You need advanced math done? I'm your guy. Need a drawing? Just shoot me. My family has absolutely zero artistic talent. I grew up hearing "can't even draw a crooked line" from my mother. I did like crayons, but more because they were pointy and colorful.
Ok, so silly joking aside, I really am pleased you artists get a second (and I'm thinking much better) shot at this. While I may not be able to draw to save my life, I can tell a nice looking EVE-type ship apart from something that should not be in EVE. It would be my guess (and maybe I'm full of crap) that as this one is being run much more directly by CCP, that the pool of submissions will be much more directly related to EVE as compared to some of what we saw at DA from the DA-only folks who saw "contest" and yet had no clue what EVE is.
As a result, I'd bet that since we the playerbase get a vote, things will be much smoother come winner time. Good luck to you and everyone else.

I get the impression we won't be able to do so till they have all the submissions in and locked. I think its a good idea on CCP's part (if thats the case)... I'm happy they didn't "forget" about the additional contest they said they were going to do (since the DA mega stuff up) - quite surprised by it - gotten so lazy, better go back to working on the Lammergeier Battleship a little bit more (mostly background stuff.. but I'll probably get stuck into the 7th view again)..
This time I might try doing a redesign of the Raven? .. or maybe a more industrial looking ORE mining ship? (all the mining ships looks too alike :S)

What do you guys think is more likely - that the CCP Artists ran out of ideas and want the community to do their job for them, or that the CCP marketing team wants to get the word out for EVE?
The whole point of this contest is the Facebook like button. They want you to broadcast EVE to all of your friends. Is that really a big deal? Vote on a few ships and show people how cool EVE is?
What would be the purpose of the voting being tied to your account? How does that get more people interested in EVE? You already have an account, or you wouldn't be complaining here. I personally think this is a great idea. If you don't like it, then don't vote. Suggesting that CCP remove the marketing part of a marketing campaign is more than a little foolish though.

I complaint, becouse we told CCP many times, community vote will be a major disaster and a FB vote will lead to even a bigger one. I worked hard in the past contest to submit ships and i will not do this again, i will just ignore the whole contest. Pherhaps i will anyway post a useless crap hoping to get in semifinalist(by posting a suitable submission) just knowing that is impossible to go more than that without a good fb account(with many friends/groups ecc).
Plus as told by many FB is hated by many, as i hate, and let us complaint on the poor choice. First Deviant then Facebook, what's next?!?
Anyway i have to say thanks to CCP that at least listen to us, this is not a sarcastic comment, it's just they made another contest as we asked and knowing that the corp of the game activelly listen to even little groups of players is a very nice thing. Will play eve forever on these basis :-)

Awesome! More Minnie ships that look pieced together with leftover parts, just not the leftover parts even the scrap yard turned away! Love Stalker.
Don't so much love the voting mechanic. I'm having images of macro's hitting "Like" for a couple weeks...
Three different sugestions for CCP to consider that will cut down on fraud and bring in new players that want to vote (and hopefully will stay to become players). None are perfect but all are better than perma-spamming the "Like" button (which draws zero into the game):
1. Create a market item for each semi finalist (a token like the data cores or something) that players can purchase for one ISK, proceeds can go to that artist as a bonus for thier hard work. Highest "purchase" wins.
2. Give out tokens to be redeemed at the startup screen. Players can choose to redeem just one (thier favorite), which is either registered by CCP or, if not possible, contracted to CCP. Tally the most tokens/contracts, thiers the answer.
3. Agents set up in each region similar to COSMOS agents. They ask you "What's your favorite flavor?", you answer, you're locked out of the system after that.
Restricts the abuse to either how much ISK you're willing to dish out or the number of alts a person has. Plus, through advertising, non-players will create accounts to vote. Win/Win.

Stahlvogel and Fujin are awesome (tho the former would have to be changed from a german to a japanese name, too). Stalker looks uber awesome, and thats the problem with it unfortunately: Minmatar don't have sleek, hi tech looking ships.
That's my assessment of most eve ship models actually: They have character, but most are downright ugly.
PS: Facebook is an accumulation of things of today's internet I hate. This contest died for me the moment it was chose as platform. ________________________ CCP: Where fixing bugs is a luxury, not an obligation. |

Marketing. These kinds of contests produce loads of visually pleasing designs, that everyone can find interesting and attractive without actually having to know anything about EVE beforehand. Facebook was chosen because it is hugely popular, has a voting system already in place and is a great opportunity for EVE to get visibility with people who aren't already playing the game.
Having outsiders decide the finalists isn't a problem, since CCP prescreens the contestants before the public gets to vote on who gets in to the finals and CCP decides the winners. They know what will fit in EVE and what to keep out of the voting entirely to avoid propable problems with the public voting phase. This thing can still work out just fine, if CCP does the presreening part properly and thoroughly.

The Caldari BS looks awesome that one will definitely have my vote if you submit it!!!

P.S. why is nobody designing Amarr ships? P.P.S I'm saying this cause i dont have artistic skills and need somebody else to do this stuff.

From the entries we've seen in the last contest I don't doubt that with just a little bit of prescreening that a hoard of monkeys could choose a selection of ships that will look really cool and most people will be happy over. I felt like most of the outrage (like my own) at the previous contest was "we've got to fly the damn things, we should be selecting the semi-finals" not "I hate DeviantArt, you should take the vote to some other overlapping-yet-still-seperate social subroup that I may or may not be a part of". Maybe I'm totally wrong and people were just upset that the ships were all out of character, in which case the new vote will be fine, but I felt that CCP understood the former when they said they were planning on re-doing the contest and letting "us" vote on the entries.
It may be a smart marketing move, but I still don't have to like it.

anyone else having issues uploading pictures to the contest? I have tried and tried with different pictures and I keep getting the same error: "Please attach a GIF, PNG or JPG (max. 5MB) of your work"
It is a jpg and it is only 2.8mb. I have tried a PNG as well at 3.5mb and still the same error ;p
I tried different browsers, renaming, etc....no luck. I emailed the help email address but haven't heard from them yet and thats been 3 days ;p
So I'm out of ideas ;p Anyone else have any?

CCP WTF are you even reading this thread?
just tell us already so we start working! I don't want to waste 20+ hours on somethign just to have it beaten by someone who made a 3d model and just pressed render!
I want to follow the rules, but if you give us an example of whats ok and what isn't how are we suppose to follow them?

Quote: òEntrants will need to provide six (6) views of their entry (all in the same image) in order to provide accurate represantation of details, measurements, and shapes. The six views should be clean, line drawings/illustrations/schematics of the exterior hull of the starship. It is preferred that you include a fully shaded/colored view (a seventh view) of the starship in the entry as well.
For those of you questioning this; the rules are as stated above. To interpret them simply, they should be clean(free of smudges, cofee stains, and the like), line drawings(black on white); and either a drawing(concept of object), illustration(artistic line drawing including 7th view), or schematic(scaled drawing; with all images in the same scale. A 7th image would be exempt from the scale req.)
In other words. 3D Models, or images of 3D models; are not an acceptable entry. Only those drwan with a 2D CAD program, Paint program; or scanned and retouched Ink or Pencil drawings are acceptable.
Think of what you would use, to import and work from; in a 3D modeling program, for example.
Also, no gridlines, or axis lines, and no watermarks; just the perspectives, (left, right, front, top, bottom, and back), and a notation including the length of the longest axis, in an unused corner. A seventh view, would be on a seperate image.
I would also suggest, its likely to be more useful; should you make the entire image, of a size the would allow individual perspectives; to fall into the 1024x768 size range category. This will remove any issues with resizing, compression; and importing perspectives to a modeling program.
Clear?
Obviously, some of you may still want CCP to confirm something like this; but, I would expect any entry following these specifications to be acceptable.

Cassus, it would be good to consider for future use at least. Some of the ship designs I've seen in EVE would be a little in drawing form without using extra drawings for some of the intricate/hidden areas. An .obj file would be something for them to look at in 3d and get a good idea of what was going on. It'd be in scale and easy to work with.
BTW, there are free 3d art programs out there.

I'm not certain gridlines are unacceptable; or even that axis lines are, likewise. It just may be though, and easier to bypass that; if you just edit them out prior to submission. I also think it's quite possible to 3D Model, with the right program; as 3D Max, and some others, have Views that are unaffected by perspective distortion. This is what I think they are trying to avoid, mostly; with regards to 3D Models, and the like. So flat Views from a 3D Program like 3DS Max, (with no wirefram of course), taken and edited in a 2D program; to remove background colors and simplify the view, would likely also be perfectly acceptable. The end result would of course have to look like a schematic drawing; but aside from that, I don't see why it couldn't be done.
Unfortunately, GMAX is downloading Fraps at the moment; so, I'm probably not going to post my own entry. It's been-literally--years since I sat down and drew a starship; and actually went to the effort to create schematic views for it, as has been requested. I'm not sure I could do it anymore; and, I recall exactly how much time went into it. A lot. I don't have that kind of time anymore, generally; and I'm not sure I want to make time for it. Particularly as I know a lot of you; will turn out much better work than I possibly could. GMAX would have made that easier I think; particularly as I've never successfully drawn an actual 7th view 3D is actually much easier to work with.

The result wasn't a failure, but the actual process caused loads of problems and anger. Basicly there were loads of confusion about the rules and they weren't properly clarified during the competition. Later when the semi-finalists were announced, most of the popular and designs fitting well to EVE were not selected. Only a few were actually fit for EVE, rest were random scifi spaceships with even a LOL design that was in clear violation of the rules.
Naturally EVE players and the DA artist were ****ed, since both felt cheated by the judges who clearly didn't even bother to follow their own rules and ignored the part where these designs were supposed to fit in to an existing franchise. As a result the LOL design was dropped and it was replaced by the winning design. As you can see even taking taste in to account it was hard to swallow that the lol piece of crap could ever be considered better than the tornado and the tornado was just 1 of many great designs that were ignored in favor of weaker designs.

Hello everyone,
To answer some of your questions:
Q. Are 3D models rendered in line view for the 6 views acceptable? A. Yes.
Q. Is having darkened areas to show depth acceptable? A. Yes, as long as you provide 6 clear views of the ship plus a color render.
Q. Are plain grayscale renders of a 3D model allowed? A. Yes, but the renders should show detail clearly.
Hope that helps. Spitfire Community Representative CCP Hf, EVE Online |

I used Google Sketchup for the Lammergeier but it doesn't have an inbuilt renderer but you can export the different windowed views as jpeg etc at whatever resolution you want... and then you can paint over the shaded 7th view in a program like GIMP (though I have Photoshop Elements 7 so I'm happy using that).
You could try using Blender for your 3d but I couldn't get the thing to work on my Windows 7 64 bit system

I really like it, it looks great and yeah I'd drop the comic thing for submisssion ;)
My Critique: The style doesnt really seem Amarr to me. To me it looks like a mixture of Caldari with minmatar solar panels and some Amarr aspects and amarr paintjob. I think if you want to get past the first selection you need to adhere more to certain style conventions of the races, for example only Minni ships use solar panels afaik. ___________________________________

Thanks for the critique! It's supposed to be a Minmatar cruiser reinforced with stolen Amarr plates. But it might deviate too much from that aswell... I'll see if I can maybe add a more Matari touch to it. =)

I would suggest that even if it's preferred to have a public vote open to non-players, it would be a good idea also to do a player-only vote, perhaps using the forum voting method used for the recent crowdsourcing. If it's secondary to the official contest, maybe include some modest in-game rewards for the winner(s).
Additionally, it looks like (if a Facebook account is needed for voting) you will want to include a mechanism to allow Eve players who do not wish to create one to vote.

My impression was that we won't see anything until they select the semi-finalists. Bit odd that there wasn't an 'entry successfully submitted' page or email, though.

I have to disagree. There are too many non symmetrical ships in the game, it's cool... but it gets old after a while.

Its all well and good most of the designs are warships but has anyone concidered doing up a design for a 100K CU Freighter. It may not be glorious but it would be the most usefull ship I could see being added. We have warships aplenty but a medium weight frieghter with some medium and low slots is what an industrialist like me would like to see.

About to upload my final - though its just Lammergeier. Too busy with other things :S Very annoyed I've run out of time but at least I've prettied Lammergeier up a little bit.
Is it possible if those of us that upload can get a quick 'acceptable to the rules' or not feed back in case we have gotten something wrong? Always worried I haven't done something correctly even after looking at the rules..

Ok still not there - should I resubmit it? I'm assuming it goes through some manual review by CCP in some way before been posted for people to look at on the official contest site.... though if I don't see it I might just keep sending it till I do see it? --------------------------------------------- Francis Wolcott: "I am a sinner that does not expect forgiveness. A lot of very nice work here, and it is inspiring to see this level of quality from the Eve community.
To the artist that created the Peregrine, and Kite very very good, professional presentation, and amazing work! You already have my vote, if you are going to do a polish pass focus on the lighting, shaders, and normal maps, maybe looking at using Mental Ray if you aren't already as a base renderer.
I am sure you have some places that could be turned into running lights on both ships help create interior light sources, the ****pit material if it is glass could be boosted up, the metal plating normal maps could use more detail, and better definition / depth, also most new Eve ships have a simple ambient rotational animation, maybe it fits maybe not, heat exchange vents on the wings little transparent polys cards with heat distortion effects, maybe even do a VFX pass showing shield boosting or some more mods in an active state, maybe even an action shot firing so I can use it as a desktop image. :-)
Again this is all small stuff, great work!

Aaaahh and I am late again...
My 2 contributions :
Immortalis Ananke
The first one dates back from the first contest so I did another one and redesigned the whole layout.
I have a question though, as asked just above : how much time does it take to be visible on the submissions page ? I have submitted the first one this morning and still nothing. Is there a CCP validation before ?
I am slightly worried.

Well I did but with a slight addition to the presentation and 7th image... so hopefully when they do put it up (if?) they use the newer one and not the older version...

I guess.. I think we have to leave it at that - if anyone thinks they'd feel safer sending in one submission a couple times over - why not. So far we don't even know what the problem is so I think we can safely assume that the competition deadline is a bit of a joke at this stage if the website doesn't even work properly...?..
Its come to CCPs attention that all is not well and I'm sure they'll do right by all of us even if it means extending time for resubmitting (if needed). --------------------------------------------- Francis Wolcott: "I am a sinner that does not expect forgiveness. How do you know your submission got in okay? I just submitted one and all I got was a "Thank you for entering the contest! Winners will notified by email at the conclusion of this promotion." Is that confirmation enough that the entry got through? Or are other people getting the same page but not seeing their submissions in the gallery at all?

I hope they extend the time... I barely was able to submit in time. Just my luck; I was stuck in a traffic jam last night, and had to scramble to submit it at the 11th hour, closing in on the end! ...stupid people don't know how to merge... Considering I'd never touched a 3D modeling program prior to essentially 40 or so hours worth of combined free time ago, I feel like I did a decent job so far; it won't feel complete until it has color!
went from this: (deviantArt contest entry) to this: ("final vote" entry) orthogonal views

Edited by: Ivan Tesla on 22/12/2010 00:36:13 Well its the 22nd and voting is supposed to begin today some time... but since not all the ships are up (I'd say its obvious that most of ships done by people for this competition aren't up there yet) then this contest "may" have embraced the power of fail.
How do you get a simple pew pew spaceship image upload contest completely stuffed up? Was this contest outsourced for someone other than CCP to conduct?
If all the missing submissions aren't up today for voting on then CCP has to come out with an official statement that explains whats going on. Well no they don't, but it would be a good idea. Here is hoping its a minor stuff up and all will be resolved. --------------------------------------------- Francis Wolcott: "I am a sinner that does not expect forgiveness. I have this problem too, 2 days ago i posted a new work i started like 1 week ago just for fun, then yestarday i submitted the gurista's Anaconda i made for the other contest, but still i see nothing on the contest site.
I too guess/hope this is becouse they got flooded by submission in the week-end. On the 2 submission the files where like 4.8mbyte and i got the "thanks for submitting" message.
Well.. nice work everyone i like the ships i saw ^_^ I just started playing with 3d in the other contest, as others do too, and i like the idea many use Blender/gimp! Long life open source!!
By the way, to those who cant make blender work under windows.... you can make EVE work under linux without much problem, why keep playing eve/3d with windows!?:D Grab a linux Ubuntu/lucid(or almost any other distro) with wine and enjoy a nice OS :-)

You are wrong, there is no "seem" relating to file size. If rules say it should be less than 5mega 4.9999mega works fines. Also i got my 2 submission accepted with the "thank you" message too, it's just they don't show in the evecontest preview and other has the same problem. Finally, CCP dont say anything, and nothing is written elsewhere, please someone tell us something like there are too many ships or similar :-)

Thats silly you get to only see some of the entries. This all should have been layed out so non of the entries are visible until CCP has weeded the non quals out then allow everyone to view them.

Well it is a 3 tier process, I believe CCP will weed out the fails and ones that didnt fit the criteria then release the remaining entries to the public vote and from that selection they will pic the final winners. I imagine we'll not see anything for us to vote on for a few days.

Edited by: Ivan Tesla on 23/12/2010 02:43:10 Edited by: Ivan Tesla on 23/12/2010 02:42:32 The amount of submissions has not changed (121 submissions) so no they haven't uploaded any new ships at all (unless there are getting rid of some for others?).
Come on CCP what on earth is going on?
If this competition had been conducted in the flesh I can just imagine it - 'initially' a whole bunch of people waiting in line to drop their entries in envelopes into a glossily & professionally decorated cardboard box with an open slit at the top for submissions. Some people can't get theirs in because the slit is too small, they ring the bell next to the box but nobody comes to help (aside from shrugs from other contestants). Some get their envelopes in but are unsure it will be counted since no one is there to process what is inside the box. In fact, there is no official person near the box or the area though there is a huge banner advertising the competition. People can see the CCP employees through the windows next to the box, working away at their computers and after a lot of yelling by some for help, one CPP official, though probably not involved in the competition but wondering what the all the noise is about, pops his head out a building window above the box and says they'll try to find out whats going on. The crowd rejoices.
..the day of voting comes, everyone approaches the glossy box.. which initially had the words 'all submissions are inside' to 'some submissions inside'. Worried looks pass between the contestants and the realisation that there are still no officials around to collect votes, all the boards around the box that are supposed to display the submissions to voters are empty. Some laugh in bemusement and walk away, amazed at how badly run it obviously is and just count their lucky stars that whom ever ran this competition didn't have something more important to organize .. or so they hope.
Beh, my story telling is not great but there you go.
Lets hope DA didn't run this competition for CCP :) I'd laugh so much if that was the case! --------------------------------------------- Francis Wolcott: "I am a sinner that does not expect forgiveness. But I am not a government official."

WooHOO!! I received an email 13 hours ago (oops :) from CCP, they are reviewing and pre-qualify all submissions before posted to the site. They expect it to be completed today or latest tomorrow! This is excellent news, don't know why this isn't indicated on the main site but whatever - a response that says the cogs are working.
Thank you CCP for responding with an explanation.

I sent an email to the [email protected] located on the contest website.. that was several days ago that I sent it. I sent it to state to them I had sent a 2nd submission of the same ship and to explain what I wanted. They could be busy replying to everyone or just those that make the most noise? Happy December 23rd, the day before December 24th, upon which the night is Christmas EVE. Remember, CCP staff have lives outside of EVE, and you wouldn't want the children of the staff of your favorite game to go wanting, would you? :P
Cut these guys some slack, this is the season to have plenty to finish up, and it is almost Christmas. That being said, Merry Christmas to everyone, and thank you for throwing this contest.
Another note - keep in mind, a lot of submissions happen last minute, and many of them may not fit the guidelines, or barely fit, or etc, so a lot of decision making about whether to accept them as is, send them back to be cut down a whole 200kb of data, or the like, may be at hand. Saying that the voting would be up by the 22nd was a bit optimistic and unrealistic. Oh well.
For the sites; Main Contest Site: http://www.evecontest.com/finalvote/
View Entries Site: http://www.evecontest.com/finalvote/browse.php
If you guys want something else to do while you wait, feel free to do one of the EVE Radio contests if they are still going, or come to Holiday Spirit's Ship Giveaway later today. He says it MIGHT start somewhere around 7pm EST (4pm Pacific, Midnight Thursday Night / Friday Morning UTC time). You can find his post here: http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1432012&page=2
Enjoy. Behave. Santa doesn't have to play EVE to spank you. Keep in mind... he knows when you're sleeping

Anyway at least they know there is a problem now (if they didn't before) jumping up and down might seem annoying to the calm, but if there is an issue (prehaps there was a problem with uploads and they didn't know? *shrug* anyone's guess) - it can help to direct attention to it for a fixing. :)

If you try to submit anything you get a message the contest is over, so some gears are moving somewhere!

Needless to say it's a bit of shame no one of CCP say nothing to us.. but I prefer they make it slow than as DA staff has done, in time and with bad result(without saying wrost possible results). Also think that the people who are working on this contest maybe don't have the rights to post on this forum on behalf of CCP, maybe that's why it's all so quiet.
As DA has done i think they underestimate the community thinking that a internal contest would give them just some hundred ships, and maybe they got some thousands :D So let's just wait and keep faith, at the lest they have done this contest after our request and we all new that day for pre-judge all the entries was optimistic at the very least. In the end all the time they are buying is for judge our work in good way and to take some holiday they deserve(who can blame someone for going vacation?! NO ONE! :P) Let's wait ...... we cant do anything about that :D

When it says the contest is closed, it is most likely referencing that the contest is closed to submissions, rather than that the contest itself is terminated. Unfortunately, CCP does end up taking a while on the contest, sometimes much longer than they announced. That is a fact to be anticipated with any contest, unfortunately - even in game ones such as the Alliance Tournaments. And I do lament the fact that there have been no updates on the contest, not on the website or in this post - some sort of update to even let us know that they are processing would be nice, and it wouldn't take too long to post a simple message. Alas, it comes to a question - how long would it take to post a simple message detailing what is going on with each individual aspect that the person is responsible for? 5 minutes per responsibility can add up, and rather easily.
However, this contest wasn't going to be over by New Years anyway. And it occurred very close to the holiday seasons, over which there is always less time to get things done. On top of that, the devs also have to take care of the largest of the Incursion releases. The devs that manage this contest weren't hired specifically for it, to lose their jobs after the contest is over... so give them some time to do their main job, and to sort out all of the last minute entries, as well as so many of the entries on this forum thread. In a way, it is our own faults that this is taking so long.
But on the bright side, this contest will be updated, eventually, and once the entries are all organized, everything else should go much, much smoother.
This being EVE and all, I won't tell you to go out and do something to make up for all the pods the lot of you have killed this year. But even though it'll probably kill half of you to do so... do try to smile. That'll take half of you out of the picture, and double my chances of winning. Dead people can't win, right? Of course, what with the recent talk of giving zombies health care, I might have to reconsider what dead people are entitled to.

In light of the delays CCP is experiencing, and my own personal experience of just not being able to scrounge together enough time to even try to participate, it seems that doing this contest in the middle of the Christmas holiday season... was not such a great idea.
It's too bad. Even mid-to-late January would've worked so much better for me; and likely for CCP as well.

I don't think there is any need to get all upset about the delay. The vote will likely happen, just not as intended (date-wise). With any company and the holiday span of Christmas to New Years, I can from experience say; they are probably at half staff at best. I know we are and I work for a hospital. It is probable that the issues of actual game bugs and fixes are taking priority at this time.
After re-reading the rules and thinking of alternate perceptions of how they might be taken; it is possible we will not see the voting selection until the 8th of January. While this could be wrong, I am not going to rule it out. Yes, I submitted works for consideration and heck ya I would like to win; but things are going to play out as they will. At least this time some slob from dA is not voting on how 'pretty' your background is.

Facebook is a worldwide information collection tool for the CIA. Howard Cox, one of the people behind Facebook is also one of the board members of In-Q-Tel. In-Q-Tel is an investment fund of venture capital of the CIA. Their target is to develop technologies for the CIA. And they have invested large amounts of money in Visible Technologies, a software company specializing in monitoring of social media, read "social media sites as one of the primary targets".
I dropped my account three years ago, two years before I heard of this information. I knew there was something terribly wrong with that thing. Before you even worry about your social security number I'd worry about all the personal information you supply there. They'll even know what type of ship you'd like to fly in your preferred game. I know that's not what we should be worried about.
I won't vote on book

Really liking how you toned down the translucence for your Sansha cloaker, would love to see the U/Vs though. This is a Gurista/Caldari Surgical Stealth Ship. A ship class idea I was proposing in Suggestions two years or so ago. Everything relevant is in the file, couldn't get any responses in a thread I had created for a compilation of all our entries. -Noro

1. Some truly amazing ships entered into the contest. And others, beyond amazing. I drool at the thought of being able to fly them, (or blow them up). 2. I'd have to have a facebook account to vote, and that's just not going to happen. I had Facebook. My account was hacked. I got hit with massive targeted spam. I quit Facebook, and I'm not going back. 3. Warning, Nerdrage time. What happened to Eve Gate? Wasn't it supposed to be a Facebook for EVE? Aren't all EVE players already a part of it? (Even if we don't want to be.) Isn't this contest exactly one of the things Eve Gate was supposed to be for? Have the devs completely written it off, or have they forgotten about it already? (Like that would surprise anyone). And lastly, am I the only non Facebook fan here who feels like this is a huge slap in the face?

Being Facebook voting, its purely going to be a popularity contest anyway. I was a little too busy / distracted to layout the UV's and paint the panels / details on. But I entered twice.
Sansha Cyno Hull to go with your fancy pants new Sansha Carrier.
Interbus Atlas Blockade Runner for those with piles of Interbus LP, and nothing to spend it on. Most people will read this thinking it's part of my post, when its actually my sig :P

I'm surprised that Caldari "lambcatcher" didn't make it in there. Maybe they felt it was too similar to the Drake. There are some good designs in there though. Its going to be tough to choose my 3 favorites.
Dammit I wish I knew about this earlier so I could have built another ship. Ah well. Can build them for fun anyway.
Oh, and some of the ships give a 404 when you try to view the full size pic.

Yeah, this is just weird. My Whirlwind destroyer is posted just fine, but my Sansha battlecruiser (IMO, a better design) is missing. Same overall presentation, submitted well before the deadline (with confirmation page), and very clearly a design that is appropriate for EVE. So why is one ship there, and the other one missing?
For reference:
Posted just fine: Whirlwind
Not there at all: Hellhound
And just to add insult to injury, since the voting page re-sizes the image to fit the horizontal size of the popup window, my horizontally-arranged image gets shrunk down to a point where you can't see any of the details, but vertically-arranged images have a lot more room and show more detail. I'd be fine with this if they'd told us the dimmensions of the viewing page, but not a word was said about this. -----------

Not any of mine were selected either (Immortalis & Ananke). Well, maybe they just wanted conventionnal races (or not, there is a Jove ship and an interbus ship). I also spent 50++ hours on those, but it is the very nature of a contest that you might be disappointed in a way or another, heh.
My real issue is more with all the mess we had in the last days when I submitted my work. None of my designs were visible on the page and since they have still not been. So I even have no clue at all if my work was actually recieved by CCP : I mean, I do not know if I was not selected or if the work was lost in the submitting process. :(
NB : and yes, facebook voting is fail. Selected or not, I would never have created an account for that, thank you very much. |

The contest was, and has always been this. Everyone enters, CCP internally chooses semi finalists, public vote for top 20, CCP art team votes final 5 winners.
Besides the fact the top 20 is more of a "who has most friends that will click through awkward system to find friends entry". Not everyone's entries fit the critera, and the page was not updated with the entries.
It would be nice to have a page with all the ones that got voted out, at least that would show the actual number of entries they all went through to get down to this 40+. Most people will read this thinking it's part of my post, when its actually my sig :P

I'm quite surprised with choice of some semi-finalists, and when I say that, I don't mean it in a good way. Few of my favorite designs that I saw as early entries to this competition are not there. As I am not going to be able to vote my suggestion is, no matter which design wins, that Robin S's Interbus Courier is implemented. It's about time we had a real ship for that faction and IÆm sorry but the yellow shuttle doesn't count!!!

I am not sure if the in-game voting - like that for the CSM would make much of a difference to the Facebook version; other than it would not be public access. EVE account voting has its bonuses. But, like Facebook, people have multiple accounts in EVE too. I am betting my sister's dog is going to vote. So, technically, you would get multiple votes in either system. I am always paranoid some major corp/alliance will tilt the vote, but that is life.
The idea of isk is good, but may not bring out as much interest unless it is a lot of isk. Likely would have to be billions. If that was the only award, I would not try for it. Personally, I would love to see this competition yearly - and as they hold more of them; the mechanism will improve.
I know that there is talk about how hard it is to make game models from art devs (in a variety of game engines not just this one) - sorry art devs, secret is out. It took me all of 30 minutes to figure out how to build, texture, animate, script, and convert a model from Lightwave to Torque, and that was 10 years ago. I bet it has gotten easier.
Either way; this hopefully is not the last contest. We all know what we want in the game, it just may take time to get it. If nothing else, at least they are letting us participate. This is not WOW. Member of the million AU Caracal Club |

Edited by: Nakayme Caonis on 30/12/2010 19:56:17 It would be interesting to see a player run contest. But yes, I do feel as if I have been smacked across the face, several times, by someone who didn't bother to wash their hands after using the bathroom.
I can understand that CCP works and tries to get stuff done, as talking about how you are trying to get it done, doesn't necessarily help get it done. That doesn't mean you shouldn't provide updates though.
The main reasons behind these feelings that I have though is that CCP did not have a right to deny entries from appearing in the semi-finals, except for their qualifying rules - under 5MB, and looks like it would fit in EVE. IF there is a submission that was accepted by the site, which apparently did have some filters to ensure the 5MB thing, and IF the ship looks like it COULD fit some design concept in EVE, even if it is a new faction that doesn't even currently exist, then the entry should have been posted. THAT, after all, is what the point of voting for which ship you think is the best - originality and creativity certainly is NOT against the PUBLISHED rules here.
In hindsight, I feel like I should have dropped my ship design on the spot and entered the J!NX design when it was announced, just because it wasn't run by CCP, aka, Better feedback and support, and at least my art would have been posted. It's not like I get the consolation prize for all the work I put into my starship design drawing, and all the fighting I did with my computer to get it to work, after all. From what I've read of the rules - those prizes only go to the people that CCP has accepted as submitting entries that meet the basic qualifying criteria - AKA, all of the entries displayed on the semi-finalists finalvote website - all of the 47 entries currently displayed.
So, everyone who put the work in, applied, had a half-decent design that many people said would fit in EVE, don't even get an acknowledgment or a notice stating why they weren't accepted, or that they weren't excepted at all. They get to look through the entries, wondering where theirs is, and then after double checking it, have to wonder why theirs isn't there. Is it still loading? Are they still adding more entries? But why is the voting already open?
After a day, it's apparent and the answer is clear. Those entrants just have to accept that they entered under the rules, and their effort was thrown into a trash can for some reason that they can't conceive under the current rules, and that despite they put the effort in, someone decided to disregard the rules and just throw people and their effort away anyway. I won't pretend to know the reason for this.
I'm just disgruntled because I feel the contest's rules regarding the qualifiers were mishandled, to the point where CCP offered me candy and decided I couldn't have any even though I did what they said. That's something that's supposed to be reserved for in game conduct - not out of game, game related contests by CCP.
Edit: All things considered, it might have been the rush to get things done via people that were less patient and more demanding that resulted in many entries being thrown out, that should not have been thrown out. So it's not completely CCP's fault. I still reserve the right to be disgruntled though.

Even if CCP just posts a gallery of EVERYONE's entries just to prove that they got all our submissions, that'd be a helluva lot better than what they have now.

Those aren't the 47 final. Those are the 47 qualifiers. Now is the public vote, where the 47 qualifiers will be voted on by the public. After that is reduced to 20 finalists, CCP will have a vote on which ones are the winners. To date, there has been no voting involved to my knowledge, as the rules do not call for it. Anything else entered besides those 47 were not acceptable entries to the contest. They were just thrown out, like the Mach 5.

Yes. Sansha can count as an Amarr Based Pirate Faction, and their ships derive a good amount of basis from Amarr Origin. They use Beams and Armor much like the Amarr and Blood Raiders, have their home outside of Amarr space, and etc. Although you'd have to check their storyline history for more, they can easily be considered Amarr Deviants as a basis.
ORE is a little more plain and clear. They can count as a Gallente based Industrial Faction, and even has the description: "A filthy rich corporation that disassociated itself from the Federation when it tried to encroach on the companies riches."
Both can win the grand prize without requiring a faction.

One thing worth noting here is the problems with the submission page. For example, even though one of my entries is up for voting, it was only accepted after significantly cutting the file size (and making the text un-readable in the process). The original, a 2.5mb .png file (limit of 5mb) would not upload properly and was auto-rejected as not being in the proper format.
Since the lammergeier image linked is a ~2mb file, I would not be surprised if it was never even seen by CCP. This is one of the things I've petitioned (about my second entry, another large file), so hopefully we'll get some answers soon. -----------

Which is why it would be good if CCP put up a gallery, or even listed all the files they received so that those of us who entered can get confirmation that we were even considered.

I don't see what is wrong and not acceptable with my entries. 6 views, a colored rendering, the size. What else is needed ?
I smell something fishy, especially as I got the confirmation page saying my submissions (large files <2Mb) were sent and thanking me for it.
I am thinking to open a petition too to get some clarification. |

FYI, the entries are mostly great imo, but I'm not participating in the contest. I just bought a years subscription to the game and I feel cheated. In botching this competition they have wasted countless hours of work I put into my entry, and valuable time I could have spent with my family over the holiday's, checking the competitions status. I know they received my entry, as well as the following polished ones as they put it an early version on the initial board they later took down, and the file, on deviant art has been posted in both petitions, and threads. If I could un-sub to EvE now, I would.

It is ridiculous to ask for CCP to explain why each and every image was accepted or not accepted into the semi finals. Just as it was ridiculous when people expected DA to do that. No competitions do that. It would take forever.
There will always be disappointments when it comes to judging art. But contests are supposed to be fun, who cares if you totally bomb in terms of placing or votes. At least you have more experience now and maybe a portfolio piece. To say you wasted your time because you won't win anything is absurd. If drawing/painting/sculpting/creating is a waste of time to you then what the hell are you doing entering an art contest. Of course you'll loose if those things aren't in your heart.
I do however agree that it would be nice to see everyone's entries. That is always a fun part of competitions, to just browse through everyone's work. Even if it was just a "finished images only" forum thread, where only final submissions are posted by those participating, and no BS banter to clog up the thread is allowed. Its how things are done in contests on conceptart.org, Dominance War, polycount, etc...
And I also agree that bringing facebook into a competition is a bit of a bummer. I know why they did it, for exposure. But I would rather see the CCP art team have the only vote. They are in the best position to vote for designs that would work best for EVE. They did the second best thing though, by pre-screening the images AND having the final say. Also, CCP should get something from this too. And since they stated they can't use the winner as an in-game design, promotion/marketing is all that remains.
It would be nice if they continue to do these contests later on down the road, with some changes, as a way to farm out concept art work and reward the winner with a freelance contract for their image. New designs for CCP, professional work experience for the contest winner. But with how much people complain about both contests I doubt they'll do another one.
Oh well. Still looking forward to flying the "Tornado" one day. Minmatar FTW!

The issue isn't about any specific entry, it's about three things:
1) A pattern of rejections that makes no sense at all. It's not like we're talking about entries which were clearly below the level of the ones which were put up for voting here, these were solid entries even if they weren't destined to win the final prize. The Lammergeier is the perfect example: a ship that was very popular with the community isn't even eligible to be voted on?
2) A general impression that the pre-screening phase would only be filtering out the junk (joke entries, stuff that isn't appropriate for EVE, entries that break the rules, etc) that was so common in the deviantart contest, not judging which ones were "good enough" to be voted on.
3) No clear indication of whether entries were received at all. This is a major problem, the submission page did not work properly (legal entries were auto-rejected for having an "invalid" format) and the gallery of submitted images was not updated frequently enough. The end result is people wondering (for good reasons) whether their entry was even seen by the judges at all. -----------

"Due to the number of satisfactory entries to the Finalvote contest, we at CCP decided to slim down the number of presented entries based on additional levels of quality and originality. Ships may not have made it due to likedness to other existing ships, level of detail, or etc. We acknowledge that many more entries were entered that meet the requirements of the contest, and what we plan to do about these additional entries is THIS.
Thank you to all who entered." Note: I don't work for CCP, and CCP didn't actually write that message. It would be great if they did though.
It doesn't take long to provide a feedback note, that took me less than 5 minutes to type. Granted, I know English isn't everyone's main language, so typing and getting translation may take longer. But replying to every entry in a single manner isn't required. Once a post like that is made, people can wait until THIS is done, and then specify further if they have questions.
This problem also isn't limited to this contest, or the last DA starship contest, which is probably why there is a significant amount of distaste for it. But as I also say, at least CCP tries to hold cool contests like this for us, which many game companies won't even attempt, most of which because they don't care. When I make these responses, it's not because I dislike CCP. I know they have a lot going on, most of which I will probably never know - for instance, the time it takes to make translations, and proper ones at that. But it IS something that has always been a downside to their contests, and should be improved upon.
Next time, I'm just gonna have to have a better graphics card so I can detail every nook and cranny of my ship so that it can be on par with the rest of these entries, and maybe learn how to use my paint programs to make those kickass backgrounds. I wish I knew how to do that, lol. But yes. Next time one of these contests are held, if I decide to enter, I'm going to have but one goal. To collapse the EVE market. I am going to build a starship so Freaking COOL, that the supercapital market will crash, because Supercapital and Titan Pilots will abandon their starships, even if they have alts, to fly my ship.
Just you mark my hamsters on that.

RE: Merin Ryskin,
I expected them to do more than just filter out junk submissions so I wasn't taken by surprise there.
I will agree with you however that this was to be a revote for the EVE community, and this aspect was lost and replaced by CCP and facebook. And I agree the submission system was weak. I also think there wasn't enough advertising for the start of the contest, not enough time for people to create new ships, and having it during the end of the year madness was unfortunate.
Though I honestly wouldn't trust the EVE forum community to pick the best ships, and I think CCP-only is the best way to handle this sort of thing, I remember that we were promised to have a community vote so I now understand why you are unhappy.

I also sent a file that was below 1 MB .... I'm pretty f#%king ****ed off right now - CCP you failed to produce a what should have been a basic 'upload picture here and we'll display it' contest. DA stuffed up over what constitutes good design, but you CCP have definitely stuffed up with your handling of this competition and more so with your programming of the submission site - that doesn't say much for your programming abilities for EVE Online.
I've got two accounts which I sorely want to cancel now (no you can't have my stuff) definitely will one... I don't know, its not like I play the game anymore - I log in, do skills, get out. Then go play TF2, BC2, L4D2 or any other game (boy there is too many cheap games on there!) on steam.

Oh, and I think it would be great if a player wants to organize a ship design contest for ISK or a ship or something. If someone organizes something I will do my best to participate even if the rewards are small. And it would be interesting to see if the contest is a success or a miserable failure.
Also, anyone notice that the order of the ships on the voting page shuffle around sometimes? Are they ordered by number of votes? Because mine is steadily moving towards the bottom. Haha. Abandon ship, shes going down...

This is, sadly, turning out to be an even bigger mess than the Deviantart contest. Did CCP even receive all the entries? Would they even say if they didn't? (probably not). Seems like they're not following their own criteria on accepting submissions. On another note, I would have loved to have seen the full roster of submitted ships, if only just to look at. Facebook requirement was a majorly bad move. P.S. Love the Lammergeier.

Generally, I am not this big of an ass... ok that is a lie; I am.
Here is the deal.
The complaining is pointless. I hope to God, none of you are about to enter the working world, and if you are already in it you should know better.
The entry you put in is your resume of sorts. Thousands of resumes a day go through a medium sized company and are trashed so fast they never get more than the first lines read. We are talking simple text docs, not complex images. This is common practice and you will never hear a thing from the company you applied to. This is simply how it works. If CCP decides as a corporate entity to trash entries, that is their call. They don't have to send you a letter or call you and explain. If you are not familiar with the "Art of EVE" book you should look it up. There are actually very specific design descriptions for each race, even down to how the curves in Amarr ships are supposed to start and terminate.
As for the relentless complaining regarding the PNG files. Here is an original thought; try a different browser or convert the image to a different format.
Is Facebook the best way to vote, no - we have established that. Further bashing of that will not change the outcome.
I guess my ultimate point here is, the second contest was a gift, another opportunity. This contest entitles all of us to nothing other than the option to have the Art team see your work. Case and point. I hired an artist from the dA contest to do some ship model building side work for me. My life will continue after this and I will keep doing my own stuff; better for having tried than not.

Every one of the finalists is beautiful imho. Every one of them would be perfectly at home gliding out of a station. My only question is WHY did the Echelon end up butt-ass ugly when regular PLAYERS come up with designs like this? I think every one of them deserves an award.

The point is that CCP explicitly stated that large .png files were a legal format for the entry, therefore it is perfectly reasonable to blame CCP if their system fails to accept a legal entry. If CCP was not capable of creating a submission system which could handle large .png files, then they should not have chosen format rules which made them legal. -----------

True if you rock the boat, you usually risk your job or ability to get freelance work. Having done freelance 'favour' work for people I can't really comment on it since it wasn't for cash obviously. Though if we don't complain, I wouldn't have gotten a pay rise (after inquiring for the over due pay rise, the complaint from me came after the offered pay rise was presented (which was very low) - the complaint worked immediately to bump the pay rise to the correct amount since it was obviously a very insulting pay rise from a very tight arse management.. and they knew it.
If you don't speak up - you don't get what you want or even deserve. It may break the illusion that everyone is happy. Don't let bosses walk over you.
That said - there are more people out there more talented and definitely more hungry than you (and obviously me) - why should I waste my time with your complaints? YOUR FIRED :)
But hey I didn't do the competition for a job, if someone liked my work enough to contact me for some freelance I would have been contacted already. I did it for the great feeling of people seeing my ship that I made, appreciating it & commenting on it... and also the chance for some prize money of course.
I'll probably die poor but if I can make something one day that people can appreciate - that's something I hope I can do. --------------------------------------------- Francis Wolcott: "I am a sinner that does not expect forgiveness. But I am not a government official."

Anyway, I seem to remember CCP kept certain rules from the first contest (things like displaying ship length, don't display EVE Online logos etc) but that is no long displayed on the first page anymore and the link to the rules doesn't have it (anymore or it wasn't in the official rules??)

I think it would do some of us well to remember why we play EVE. For most of us, it isn't to compete in contests like this. Granted, these sorts of contests ARE FUN, and I'd like to take a moment to thank CCP for throwing them for us, via their own time and effort and through forming partnerships with companies such as J!NX.
That doesn't mean that I don't feel disgruntled. And I know complaining about these things WON'T change the outcome of this contest. Yet, the problems in this contest aren't isolated to this contest (After playing EVE for 3 years, I've seen my small share of EVE contests), and do disrupt the honest efforts of EVE players. That's why I and several of my other capsuleers (although not all of us) speak up about it, because we'd honestly like to see these problems taken into account, and better handled in the upcoming contest. Again, that's not because we hate CCP, because we don't. Are you disgruntled at CCP? Put yourself in their shoes - all the time frames, having to help other people with their contests, in game and out of game (ADIDA will be at the Trade Event on the 9th of January). Think about it - they might have an event committee, help promote each others events, and etc. Sometimes, you might get stuck on the raw end of no one supporting yours, or at least, not with as much help as you need. So for me, a lot of the problems I see can be resolved in the planning stages; 1. Give more time for the contest (which would let more people enter, especially when the contest is held during the last 2-3 weeks of a college semester, and the deadline is the 2nd day of my Country's typical Final Exam Week) 2. Give yourself a grace period between publishing entries, so that people that have entries that may need minor adjustments to fit the rules, can be addressed. 3. Answer Emails sent about the contest. Maybe within a few days, would help. 4. Make a rule about patience, and update your thread about progress, so that people know what to be patient about. I mean, EVE is a game. People pay money to play EVE. This is a contest relating to EVE, for EVE, for those players. It's a nice gesture (and again, thank you), but that's still who it is for. So having a good community involvement that draws out the contest a little more is much more important than having a quick, decisive contest that sticks to all the deadlines. And yes, I'd rather risk losing placing so that myself and other people can make that late entry with a few changes to better fit the rules, if and when need be. And if it is in the rules that CCP holds the right to do that, then there shouldn't be any legal concerns or rule concerns, which I know has to be of concern since CCP admins work for a company.
I'm not trying to be staunchy or anything, but I honestly feel these things would help the contest run a lot smoother for everyone involved.
What do you guys think?
PS: Happy New Years. May the Sansha eat all your souls but leave your loot for me. PSS: Please don't self destruct as the Sansha board your vessels. That'd destroy all the loots.

In my opinion, CCP needs to allow for voting for these ships to be done on the EVE-online website in some form. Many players do not have a Facebook account to "like" a design and by shamelessly getting in bed with Facebook and their rampant anti-privacy/data mining activities this precludes many EVE players from being able to vote if they do not want to be forced to join Facebook. If this unfortunate choice of voting method cannot be changed for this contest, then I strongly urge CCP to not use Facebook for voting on things in the future. This is EVE, not Facebook, and votes should be taken and tallied on the EVE-online website for all players to use since we already have accounts here.

right okay....
1) as much as you might have thought this was a bonafide way of possibly being hired by ccp for designing artwork and new ships etc.... its not going to happen! this is a community and marketing strategy. the fact you're voting on facebook clearly shows that CCP wants to use this competition as a modern method for a marketing and advertising campaign.
yes it partially alienates core Eve players and i understand that, but CCP feel the need for whatever reason to get EVE more facetime to more people. why do u think CCP gave good money to get the front cover of a PC gaming magazine?
2) sooo many emorage posts on here from people complaining about either their stuff not making it or others making it without sticking extremely rigidly to the rules of submission are just absured! if your entry doesnt fit into one of the 4 races stylistic details and forms then unless ur going to show them where itd fit in the game like this one that got through - The Interbus
another thing is one of the rules stipulates work must be original and cant have been submitted to any other contest of the same type. and yes that means the deviantart one... so yahh complain all you want about your resubb'd deviantart/ccp entry but CCP are seeing this as a separate contest! otherwise im pretty sure the Tornado matari entry would have been resubb'd and in the semi's too!
3) some of the emorage directed to entrys that made it with "views that arent of the same model"... yes they are! and wtf cant u tell whats being showed in the differing views?? most of the time theres text to tell you why the views differ ffs! and tbh 3d artists really do appreciate that you're showing additional semi hidden geometric information that would be difficult to see in the typical 6 views
so calm the f*** down and be rational, and if u cant do that, then take it like a man and dont flame! CSM Prop 1 CSM Prop 2 |

Edited by: Jagga Spikes on 01/01/2011 17:57:55 you have some dubious points.
first, there were ships in submission phase worthy of being selected, but aren't there anymore. look for Stahvogel. so, why is good art being omitted if this is marketing effort?
reason can't be because it was in previous contest, as some ships that can be voted for now, have been in DeviantArt contest. even tho rules do in fact state that ship should have been made for this contest.
originality can be discussed. it should be easy to spot Myrmidion and Thorax in the semi-finalists. as for "4 races stylisitc details", there is a sleeper cruiser.
imo, most people have been quite calm, except for facebook voting issue. so, if you want people to be calmer, don't come with oil.

I have to strongly echo the sentiments of excluding all non-Failbook users. It makes those of us players who can't/won't sign up or use Failbook connect.
What aren't our credit card numbers and payment services as good as the players on Facebook?
I understand when something like J!nx is hosting a contest that you have to be registered with them, but why do I have to sign up and use a totally foreign service to vote on a contest you are putting on?
I know someone else has probably ranted on this already, but this thread passed TL,DR several pages back. |

Originally by: Ivan Tesla Does anyone have a screen shot of the rules that were displayed on the front page of the contest? I'm having a bit of a flamefest on general CCP Starship contest... CCP couldn't run a tap of water if it tried
Anyway, I seem to remember CCP kept certain rules from the first contest (things like displaying ship length, don't display EVE Online logos etc) but that is no long displayed on the first page anymore and the link to the rules doesn't have it (anymore or it wasn't in the official rules??)
I'm too annoyed and aggro right now - its amazing, I haven't been this annoyed since I lost my first ship ha. I'll be leaving soon enough.
this has the rules on it
Thanks for that, though I won't be making this an issue anymore, I've annoyed too many people. It wasn't my intention to annoy other players. It was my intention to get an actual reply from CCP since I wasn't getting it privately.. so I end this now and say to those that are annoyed with me - I hope you don't get an issue that is ignored by CCP because bringing up on the forums probably wont help you at all.

Edited by: Nakayme Caonis on 02/01/2011 02:15:47 Regarding Facebook, I believe one of the main reasons for the anti-facebook sentiment in this contest is because it was not announced. There was no official announcement regarding facebook as a partner, and the only statement that really included facebook was that "How will I vote on the semi-finalists after the 21st? The Facebook ôLikeö button will be the vote mechanism." which is from Adida's post at the beginning of this thread.
People like me that don't use facebook can interpret that several ways, such as that facebook has contents, and has a button that is used to vote in similar contests. Such, a button similar to the button used in facebook (a facebook-like button) would be used to vote in these ends. As I have stated before, several things about this contest were not clear in the rules, and still have never been clarified. Even during the submission period, it became difficult to get emails back - if you even got a response at all.
I can understand why CCP would make partnerships to promote EVE, but without looking at facebook, I do not even know if this is a facebook-partnered contest or project.
Lastly, people like me will never get facebook pages because they are threats to our RL job security. Human Resources can and do check facebook profiles in my line of work, and people have been FIRED for having a picture of them at a party in decent dress, holding up a cup of beer and talking to people. ...That's right. And to do THIS, I'd have to either choose between making a false facebook account (which can easily be used to make false votes), or a true one, and further risk my job security by linking myself to a video game (and you thought a cup of beer was bad). Yes. Sometimes the quest to maintain a company's image can go a bit too far, and yes, very few fields hold that to level of stringency. Sadly, mine is one.
For everyone ELSE, I believe most of the facebook arguments can be summarized into one link: Southpark: You Have 0 Friends. Warning: Foul and inappropriate language used in everyday life WILL be present. Do not watch if you or those around you find swear words offensive.
Congratulations to the people who did get in. Goodluck on the vote. I hope the contest will be better run next time. And please, do NOT make me a facebook page.

So the winner of this 'contest' isn't going to be included in Eve... and any facebook person can vote on it (non-Eve player), and the thousands of Eve players who won't use face book can not vote... wow. How fail can you get? I was at the point of giving CCP kudos for recent actions, but this just sent it spiraling backwards again. Also the lack of any reaction in this thread by CCP is insulting. VERY.

Perhaps if you can't tell the difference between "the facebook like button" and "the facebook 'like' button", you should spend a little more time thinking about what you read? There is absolutely no ambiguity at all in that sentence, it was clear right from the beginning that facebook would be used for the voting process.
(Notice the very important quote marks around "like".)

And hey, you found the obvious solution! I guess I should give you more credit than the rest of the "BUT MY PRIVACY!!!!!!" whiners.
I do feel sorry for you though, if you could seriously get in trouble if your employers discovered that you play a video game. Perhaps it's time for a new job? -----------

Quite comparatively, if you don't use facebook, you wouldn't know that facebook had a "like" button, so the only clear meaning from the context would be that there is a button similar to a facebook button option for voting. Unless you're psychic or go scavenging over facebook to see what button exactly Adida would have been talking about.
BTW, it's not that I CARE About it being on facebook. I really, really don't, actually. I am commenting to make a point so that maybe the next contest will be done a little bit better.

Good, decent paying jobs are priceless. Be happy I am in my field. There are a lot of people in it that shouldn't be, and you'll notice the difference 10-20 years down the line from now. When people in my field make mistakes, it effects everyone, and everyone has to start dealing with fatal accidents that can easily involve hundreds and thousands of people. That's one of the reasons I want to leave the United States, but New Generation American Engineers have already made such bad impact internationally that it has become slightly harder to do. Not to mention that companies based outside of the US are a bit more 'chill' on what I do in my free time. [I think drinking beer and posting it on facebook might be a requirement in Europe.] And Germany? I want THEIR holiday schedule! A month in days off... It's like a cheesecake of free time.
PS: CCP, how does Iceland view American Engineers?

Huh. I ended up voting for all Minmatar ships. I voted for the Serval, Whirlwind, and Freeborn. On one hand they're all very similar to ships that are already in the game. The Serval looks like the Scythe, the Whirlwind and Freeborn look like the Tempest. But I thought they would make cool replacements for the T2 ships. The recolored hulls we have now for T2s are not as interesting as these modified designs would be. Also, why do the T2 re-skins have to always be so gaudy?
Thats how I rationalized my choices anyway. They won't put the winner from this contest into the game so it doesn't really matter in the end.
At first I was going to vote for more original designs but I just don't feel any of them fit EVE very well. Some come close. Then again, some ships in EVE don't seem to fit. Like the Augoror. But I guess there are only so many ways you can reshape the Amarr talon/beak shape. Eventually you run out of cool ways to use it and end up with the goofy chicken-headed ships that are the Amarr Battlecruisers.
The "Horus" definitely looks like a Caldari design, but it looks like a Caldari space station. Doesn't look like a fun sexy ship to fly. The "Caldari Battleship" by David L is simple yet imposing, and resembles the Caldari freighter, just rotated 90 degrees. I think the skyscraper-looking thing in the middle on the front-view is an interesting idea. Skyscrapers fit the personality of the corporate douches that are the Caldari. That 'walls of glass' look might work well in some sections of Caldari ships. Also I view Caldari as an extreme version of USA and I believe USA was the first to go nuts with building skyscrapers. "Vanagandr" also looks Caldari and has an interesting front section. But the back lets it down and overall it looks too much like a jet.
Most of the entries are great in terms of level of polish, presentation, technical skill. Just not wowed by the actual designs, particularly with regards to fitting into EVE. If the 'Tornado' from the first contest was in there it would still be my first pick.

Originally by: egg timer Considering that most existing ships in Eve look like they were designed by a ******ed rhesus monkey, I don't really see why we should expect anything different to win; CCP will just "prejudge" out anything that doesn't look equally absurd.
Back in 2003, I pretty much agreed with you, especially on all those grotesquely asymmetrical designs that couldn't fly a straight line in space if they wanted to.
But since 2003, they've come up with a fair number of more probable looking ships, and textures have improved too.
Even the most ridiculous ships, that looked like the modeler simply stuck together parts of a 3D set of crude hardware store components (raven, scorpion) have been replaced with somewhat improved (raven) or much improved (scorpion) models by now.
Many problems still remain:
Unlike the designers of the homeworld ships, that put great thought into proper scale and truly managed to express every ships purpose in its hull design, EVE ships are still a weird mishmash of things that make no sense:
1) scaling inconsistencies 2) thrusters that fire into components behind them, like wings or antennae (mammoth, nighthawk, others) 3) asymetric thruster arrangements that would result in involuntary twirling flight paths 4) no sense of where the bridge might be in many ships. 5) ships that look like hand tools or deformed chickens. (Rupture, Prophecy) 6) basically no ships cool enough that you'd want just for their design (failure to learn from car and yacht design on how to make a vehicle desirable through good design) 7) failure to display advertising of Ishukone and other NPC corps for their ships on space Televisions. (Quafe commercials get old) 8) ships with spinach growing all over the hull (Ishtar) 9) almost no black ships, the few that looked great in black (khanid omen, Nighthawk, Kronos, Navy Scorpion) were either npc only versions, or needlessly ended up getting recolored to trashcan-gray or something else way less cool.
Since CCP has become more international, I have to give credit for the improvements. And since the tier 2 battle cruisers got released, no more really horrific blunders have been made.
Still, there's room for further improvement. Especially with Incarna in mind, ships could use at least a proper bridge (some ships have, and some don't) and some scaling work, that could probably be handled just by texture alteration.
And give us back some black ships! Black Ops ships sure could stand to be black, especially the Amarr one...
I'll offer 2 plex for making the Khanid Navy Omen available to players in some form!
... Madness is taking its toll, please have exact change ready. |

10) Missiles are flying from a center of hull. It's actually very stupid, if you look to any space game. Well, in homeworld, again, missiles are launcher from ship's hull(model) too, but from missile bays, which just a part of a model. Even on vaygr battlecruisers, those missile bays on top is static, but it's looks fine. Is that really was too hard to do? http://www.xfire.com/video/41138b/ Well, it's was fine on beta, but it's been a years now... ---

That is close to the expectation. The small print in the original posting for this contest stated that the winner would get into the game, but may not get in right away. I don't see that as a good reason to hold off on the announcement of the winner/s.
Again not sure what the hold off is. If they are going to announce at Fest, why not just have a Dev get on here and say that, should not be too hard to do. Also announcing the winner should not be contingent in the ship showing up in the game right away.
So, Devs, get on here and say something on the status of this - that is all we really want. Member of the million AU Caracal Club |

Even a bad decision would have been better than dragging this thing out month after month. Seriously what is the reason for delaying giving out the results or haven't you yet even decided who the winner is? Even at worst all it would have taken is for the judges to spend one evening together with a bottle of booze and just make a decision about who the winner is going to be. Or alternatively maybe lock them in a small rat filled room with no windows and only a small light source and then tell them you will let them out only after they have agreed on the winner.

Yeah kinda glad i didnt bother submitting
Designing stuff is a real effort sometimes and although I think I coulda done well, any wait time for hearing back is exactly why some people never put forward an entry.
Shame, probably other good contenders never to be seen too but gl to those that have submitted, hope you find out inside this year :/

Originally by: CCP Navigator Hello everyone,
I am so sorry about the delay in responding to this thread. I am currently trying to get in touch with the right people internally to find out when we can announce the winner. I hope that will be sometime in the next few days, even possibly today.
Thanks Navigator, I had a feeling that contacting you guys would help get this answered.
See, send a petition to CCP and they shall answer.

This link is good.
Now everyone can thank me for having the good sense to contact CCP about this a few days ago and get it done.

Congradulation's to everyone that made it to the final round. I see real talent and vision in the designs that made it....But there is one design that alway's wins and that ssstarship design is Fate.
How slowly and methodical FATE watches you from the depth's of space, from the dark reaches of your mind. It watches you as you gloat and exhault yourself with your victories. Fate watches as you build your empire around your design...grinning ever so slightly. As Fate would have it and when Fate is ready Fate then gives birth to a new design as she slowly curls around you crushing your design. The new and bold design brought forward to the New Eden Citizen, your heart crushed under the weight of their need.
FATE...the only starship design that can never be beaten...Remember that designer.

So...the winner is finally announced today...THROUGH FACEBOOK! I don't see the announcement here...where it should be. I gotta say though...the winner has to be one of the blandest ships out of all of them. Needless to say it did not get my vote...and I may sound like an ass for saying it but I don't think CCP even counted votes at all. They threw something up to make us think our votes counted when in reality it was just all for show. They had a winner picked from day one. That or they got really lazy about it and just picked one randomly out of a hat today and called it good to get it over with. NO BOOBIES LEFT BEHIND! |

A lot of caldari, amarr, minmatar designs. Almost no gallente. See? This is the best proof of gallentes inferiority. Bust'em. Give'em some love!

Or...just delete them? Good designs, but the stats for Gall ships are lacking. ---------------------------------

Pretty surprising brain fart here...why does a "winners announced!" link take me round in a comedy circle of links none of which involves who the actual winners are?
Sometimes I think CCP just like to poke us with sticks so they can see us rant...

The above thread shows who won. The only confusing part is the finalist link does not explain clearly how those finalists where chosen.

Edited by: Fred Kyong on 15/04/2011 22:19:01 Congrats to the winner.
All very nice ships, I would have liked to vote for all of them.
But: All ships I do not really need. I have enough BC/BS¦s and whatever. I would have liked ships we do not have yet with maybe some new modules, and bonus.
Such as: - WH Exploration Ships - Gas Mining Ships - Maybe a new Orca with some jump drive capabilities - An Outpost/ POS Logistics vessel what can load outposts/pos/pos fuel/ pos modules
However, nice work
PS: I would never use face book to vote. Thats fail. I can write you a HTML code with abit of MySQL to put this on a website

Yeah there are too many BS's and BC's...
Have you noticed that there are if not any, little gallente creations? does nobody like round and buggish?
What types of ships i would like to see in game:
Medium size hauler that doesnt take months to train for cant think of any more...
And there should really be missle turrets instead it just comming from the hull of the ship...

Edited by: DrysonBennington on 05/05/2011 02:55:32 Edited by: DrysonBennington on 05/05/2011 02:53:13 What EvE needs are race specific ECM Ship's. We shouldn't have to be forced to train Caldari skill's just to use the BlackBird.
I also think that high sector capital ship's are a must that way 0.0 corps cannot run to their high sector haven's of safety after their POS has been popped.
A few new classes of ships that are higher up on the tier but still under the Drednought class of ship would provide limited fighter and fighter bomber support for higer sector operation's.
The new ship's would be in the same tier as the Maurader class of ship's but would be equipped similar to their larger cousin's that roam the depth's of 0.0.
For instance the Hyperion could have most of it's offensive weapon's removed leaving three high slots that would then allow for the vessel class to be used as a fighter/fighter bomber carrier.
The fighter and fighter/bomber craft used would be more powerful than even the best drone possibly used but would still be smaller in size and power when compared to let's say a Nyx Class Carrier.
One BS from each race would be converted into the carrier or better yet new design's would be incorporated to develop a brand new look.
Think about the high sector carrier as a smaller flatop version of the larger flatop.
I think that there should also be a combat hauler able to defend itself against 0.0 gate camper's and raider's.
The hauler's that can warp cloaked are okay but lack sufficient cargo hold space to make them effective except for operation's close to the 0.0 post.
A cargo hauler that is able to defend itself against cruiser's without the aid of combat support ship's is needed. The ship should have destroyer warp capabilities that replace the cloaked warp function while having a top end carghold capacity of a fully rigged out Mammoth. Low structural hit points would allow for such a ship to be designed.
High armor and shield resistance somewhere around 45% starting off for each type of resist.
Five high slot's, four medium slot's and five low slot's plus 75 m3 drone space.
Here are some free tools for those interested in developing their own starship's.

So.. you take pride in being wrong? And why would I petition it?
Edit: And what do you say to players older than you? I've seen Akita T and half a dozen other people berate you regarding the proper use of the apostrophe, what do you say to them?
