I can't believe how this works like it does, its not easy. I had a old man with the top of his head bald and white hair that stuck up on the sides. Now I can't seen to find a mad scientist look. Where's the white lab coats? I'd like to ask why ccp didn't let us have a choice to start with our original char look and change from there or a choice to create an new face. No now we have to change our appearance so we all look like barbie dolls. Who designed this someone who plays dress up? Their all to perfect.

Love the updates to the PI interface...the new extractor control units are great and the ability to fine tune the time of each extraction cycle means that PI folk can get a better return by maximising output. Character editor? Well, it may not be perfect, but I couldn't really care less about my avatar beyond it looking "ok". Eve is still the best game by a country mile, so thanks CCP for all your great work.

Edited by: DocsGirl on 22/01/2011 03:35:39 Edited by: DocsGirl on 22/01/2011 03:34:35 Character Editor: The character editor is a great new way to create a character. I find that the variety of ways you can create the character seems to be lacking though. It appears that certain facial and body types are limited to the faction you use, which kind of makes it appear as if everyone's been inbreeding as the facial structures are not very varied.
One of my biggest gripes is the lighting for the final camera shots. Way too many shadows that end up making eyes look squinted or just overall weird when trying to get a good closeup shot of your avatar's face. I almost prefer the design mode view, take a snapshot of THAT and use it as my avatar's image. The lighting for the design view is almost perfect IMO.
I noticed that when I use makeup (had half opacity even) it ends up making the pictures for the avatar very different than when I look at the character in design mode. Because the pictures don't show enough detail, it makes it very difficult to find a good medium without your character looking like a freak (on a closeup).
Clothing is extremely limited and tops, bottoms, or boots don't even match. So there's no way to create a decent looking character.
Whoever designed the makeup styles... man I'd hate to see that person in real life. Those are some of the crappiest lipstick patterns EVAR!
Hair color options are very limited. Not very easy to make a hair style with bright colors such as lime green or other things to create a punk look.
Some of the hair styles just don't work well for the photo of the avatar. There are 4 styles that pretty much look similar when taking a proper photo: 1. Ponytail short 2. Ponytail long 3. Bun 4. Roll/Hair Tuck
There's no way to determine the difference in hair styles unless you do a 1/3 angle shot.
Facial expressions themselves are completely missing. Half the time when you try to make a character smile they end up looking angry or confused. It'd be nice to have a feature where you press buttons to go through several facial features; Angry, blowing a kiss, winking an eye, surprise, etc. The facial rigs seem to be there for it, so why wasn't it included?
The characters sure look more detailed in the character editor, but the portraits themselves for the game, in a way, haven't really improved much since you can't see any detail anyways. I'd love to see the ability to info a character and see a decent, good, large portrait. If you look at CCP StievieSG's image for example, the shot is way too small to see any detail and I bet if you lined up different characters in the same pose they'd look the same even though up close they're fundamentally different. I can't see makeup, or lipstick in his shot... so I'd say that the current portraits are very limiting.
Overall a good start... but that's all it appears to be, a good start. Just a shame it was released too early because it is missing a lot of good features.
Interestingly enough, speaking of early release... I'm working with a Gallente Jinmei Female and the eyelashes aren't on the eye-lids... they're disconnected and appear to be sitting on her eye's instead. And speaking of eyelashes... why does the guy get the eyelash thickness feature but the girls don't???
The eyeball's sclera is way too gray as well.

Edited by: Canby on 22/01/2011 07:49:05 Well, what has incursion done for me? Beyond the obvious breakage, I mean.
So far, a character gen that is... less than wonderful. Not nearly enough options for male or female toons. Facial expressions are missing. You can't make portrait of a char the smiles without them appearing brain dead. Clothing options suck slough water, and no ability to start from scratch in the redo. Not to mention that, after redoing several Toon's portraits about 15 hours ago, they still haven't propagated through the system to show up in the game screens.
PI is a major disaster. At first blush, it's no longer a viable way to try and make ISK. It's possible that we just don't know how to make it work, because there's no info on how the new structures work, but I have a character that just rebuilt a PI site on a planet and went from 11 extractors to a max of 3 of the new extractor controllers. I have trouble seeing that as a benefit.
Shields are nerfed, and I have a Domi driver that could tank 8 battleships and an equal number of cruisers last week, and now must run when 4 BSs appear.
I'm not sure if I should complain, or thank CCP. Ya, I have four accounts that are utterly useless unless I retrain them to be scammers or pirates, which I will not do. Or I can lose 4 accounts, and save a not inconsiderable amount of real life cash.
Impressed? Not so much.

To add to number 5 the following also do not despawn: survellance, herd, menagerie, horde
Because of lack of despawning the rate of respawning is slowed.
Number 4 needs serious work as well it and 5 are needed badly....more so than character fixes....oh and 1 too....

Things Id like to be fixed/changed. They used to work but dont now.
Targeting with ctrl pressed down. Pressing ctrl down should not do anything before you click something you want to target from overview or space. Keeping ctrl down and clicking another object should target that too.
Freezing overview with ctrl pressed down. Does not happen. Was a very welcome feature when it was introduced.
"Warping to x" message missing when manually warping.
Default focus switched back to change price when modifying a buy or sell order.

I would point that problem with filtering in Overview (States section "Pilot has neutral standing") is terrible issue. I do have setup navigation filter where I can see enemies/stations/gates. That allow me to be able use my travel thru secure systems. Now that navigation panel is full of ships completely irelevant to me.
Fix it fast!
I would add two another anoying "features" of new patch:
6/ - when I dock I have always open Ships (I have ships and items integrated into station interface), before patch it used to remember what I had selected. 7/ - is impossible to drop into trade window partial amount of items via shift-drop. Now I must 1st shift-drop partial amount into hangar and then to trade window.
Question to CCP. Why patch always broke things what were perfectly ok before?

Let me add my voice to the chorus of complaints about the character creator.
There's a lot to like about it. I wish it's performance weren't crap. Like an earlier poster, I did have the impression it was much better on SiSi.
But here's my real gripe: It takes So......Friggin......Long to set up your portrait, and then when you run out of time, you're stuck with it. This must makes no sense whatsoever!
I understand the need to at least partially lock in a character -- though I had hoped those four slots would be available as alternatives, for different occasions.
But this fix of giving us a redo (and only those of us who did it early) is wrong-headed. Don't rush us! Give us some time with our character, time to play around with it a bit, maybe compare a bit, before we commit. Everybody! I'm not going to redo it until you change it so I don't have to do it in one session, so I have the time to do it right.
Because, basically, I got it as good as I could get it in one session.
And really -- why not lock in only the basic features? You went to all this trouble, and put out all this hype, about your great new character editor, that we will only see a handful of times.
The choices were so incredibly limited, it was a major disappointment compared to the ability to sculpt. Of course, most of the time I couldn't get the sculpting to work, either, probably due to the lousy performance not giving me any feedback. Probably 2/3 of the place I tried to sculpt, I couldn't see the difference before/after my attempt. The difference may have been there, but if it shows up a few seconds later, it can be hard to observe that it had anything to do with your current sculpting attempt!
And while I don't have the latest-and-greatest hardware, it's not crap either. This was a top-of-the-line gaming laptop 4 years ago.
I suspect the performance would have been just fine if you didn't insist on having my character move around like he had ants in his pants while I was trying to sculpt him. Let him hold still, so you only have to draw what I'm actually changing. Not only will it perform better -- the UI will be better!
As it is, while the extreme limitation of choices makes people look kind of alike, there's no way I could make use of more choices right now. It takes so long to evaluate each choice, that I gave up on exploring the choices of some of the options, because I was running out of time.
Also, the presentation of the choices was so small and context free, and required re-rendering the character to see each alternative -- it wasted huge amounts of time. Bring up a gallery! Make them bigger! A single 1-D list where you really can only see one item, with just a hint of the others, at such low resolution, simply would not scale to a reasonable selection.
The clothing in the 1-D list never matched what it actually looked like. Details like embroidery was basically invisible -- even the colors were wrong, as if the catalog photography were done by an amateur with no lighting experience.
And I never did figure out what the difference was between the two (only two!) different lips.
There's a lot I liked about it. But overall, for each character I've done so far on TQ, it has been an incredibly frustrating experience.
By the way -- I really think it should have been a design requirement, that we should be able to come close to recreating our existing character. The concept appears to not even have crossed anyone's mind; it would appear to be flat-out impossible to even come up with a resemblance. Or at least, that's my impression, but maybe if it didn't waste so much time I'd have found a way.
I didn't like any of the lighting options given.
But here's the takeaway -- NONE of these complaints would have near the impact if you didn't pressure us to achieve perfection in one sitting! Let us change our portraits!
PS: I wouldn't care so much if there weren't actually aspects I like!

OK ... just re-created this character's appearance ... and noted a few things ... I'm sure I'll note more later but only really want to comment on the things I'm sure about at this stage.
That being - the limited fashion plate we have to pick from. In my original characters appearance - I had more to chose from and ... it was culturally significant. Right now ... I'm pretty much dressed up like any punk kid you might see at the mall - not some guy from an alien culture a good bit of time in the future, on the far side of a collapsed worm hole.
I had to chose between a jacket and a vest, with various color combination's and two types of foot wear, Boots with wrap around buckles and sneakers.
The only difference in my wardrobe seems to have been whether it was winter or summer at the mall.
*shrug*
I've yet to work on any of my other characters so we'll have to see how things go but ... so far ... it looks like Walking In Stations is going to be like Going To The Mall in any Industrialized Nation on Earth today rather than a number of distinctly alien cultures - which you had in the old portraits.
Yes, the portrait looks much more realistic - though it is still obviously a CGI.
Also ... the back ground seemed much more limited and less interesting than the old ones.
So ... over all ... from what I've seen so far ... a tremendous amount of work ... which may pay off later when (and if) WIS is finally released ... has been a step back. Despite the fact that it was less photo realistic, I liked my old portrait better than the one I have now.

Now, about the PI update!
Mostly, I like this a lot. Some aspects more than others, but it's a lot quicker when I'm in a rush, to get my planets going again.
But there's a few things...
I'd like to be able to move command centers. Now that planets really change a lot over rather short time-spans (too short, IMHO!) I find that I've had to move my installations to the other side of half of my planets. That's OK, I'm not really using the command centers. BUT!
Now, when I bring up my planets, I have to hunt around to even FIND my installation. The useless command-center comes up nicely centered on my screen!
Or, instead of moving the command center, remember the last position and bring it up again.
Also, the new system pretty much nerfs Command Center Upgrades level V, when in losec on high-output planets, producing P1 goods. I got to Level V the next day. I was already at 10 extractor heads at level IV. Adding an additional ECU, at the high powergrid cost of the ECU, means I don't have enough powergrid left over for the corresponding processors. Basically, level V doesn't really give me more output on my extraction planets, at least not in proportion.
I was disappointed that while it addresses the placement issues for extractors, it is still an incredible pain to tightly position processors and other units (including the ECU). If they're overlap a bit, instead if turning red and giving an error -- have them collide, or have them snap into an in-contact position, or even better -- let us drag them around until we submit the change.
But: Being able to set programs of a length that actually makes sense for my schedule: HUGE WIN! THANK YOU!

Clearly the Character Creator in some respect feels unfinished (eg. hair, skin color & clothing choices), but overall CCP has given people a much improved tool with which to exercise their creativity. And what a creative bunch you've proven to be.
My real concern is with the coming incursions and their impact on the game. It may be that it will no longer be viable for some us to continue our usual and preferred activities. I suspect that the issues with the Character Creator will soon take a back seat.

I don't have any of the complaints I've read about the character creator. I've created a decent portrait for my character; one that I'd be happy with for the rest of my time on EVE. Three times.
Every time I go to save, the EVE client crashes to the desktop. When I log in again, no new portrait. The rest of EVE works just fine on my PC. I've never had any problems. Until now.
Great new tool, but (at least for me) it just doesn't work.

Yeah ... just one more thought on this ...
It's like ...
1) I was really looking forward to the Incursions thing as it sounded like fun. Then ... I find out that besides fighting uber rats ... we were going to get our ships gimped too ... which is a bunch of crap ... and I became unhappy about that ... unhappy enough that I really don't plan on participating.
2) I was really looking forward to redoing some of my characters as ... there were problems with the old creation process and ... I wanted to make some things better. Then ... I'm not so happy with my first experience with the process - or the results. This is coupled with the fact that - I've got ... more than one account ... most of which have more than one character ... so ... I'm going to have a lot of work to do here ... just to get back to where I was ... with results which I may not be any more pleased with than what I had. I'm certainly less pleased with the one I've got now - but - a redo wouldn't help. The tools just aren't there to make me any happier than with what I've got now, so I'm just stuck with it.
3) I was really looking forward to an improved PI interface ... but now ... it's looking like it's not just the interface that has changed ... but I'm going to have to redo all my colonies ... which ... given the nature of that process ... I had spent a good bit of time setting them up and calculating just how much production I could get out of each one. Now ... it looks like I may not be able to get the same amount of production out of the same number of installations ... So ... if that turns out to be the case ... I've got yet another bunch of work to redo - all for results I may well be less happy with than what I already had.
See a pattern here?
High expectations - resulting only in disillusionment and ... a lot of damn work just to get back to something I may well be less happy with than what I had before.
Not the feeling I'd been hoping to have right now about this update ...
Oh yeah ... and then the bookmarks ... God Damn It ... not being able to put a bookmark in someone elses jet can - is going to be a ****ing pain in the ass I'm going to have to live with every ****ing time I go mining. Son of a *****. Yeah ... it's a trivial little thing - but it's a trivial little thing I'm going to have to ****ing put up with constantly - forever - unless you ****ing ass holes put it back the way it was. All the other stuff ... well I'm sure you tried hard to make it better and just screwed it up - but HERE - you're going to make my life ... just a little bit harder - CONSTANTLY. We put bookmarks in jet cans THROUGHOUT the time we're mining. We're ALWAYS DOING IT. Now - if the guy who created the jet can forgets to put his bookmark in there so the other guy can empty it - he can't just put one in there himself. He has to create his own damn jet can and them move things into IT. God Damn It ... I don't want to have to **** with "Who can put the bookmark in the jet can ..." all ****ing day - every ****ing day - from now until for-****ing-ever - cause you ass holes aren't ever going to fix something this trivial. And - why the God Damn Hell do you do something so ****ing useless in the first place? Jesus H. Christ ...
Oh ... and for anyone thinking this is trivial ... have someone sit behind you and flick your ear ... constantly ... all day ... every day ... for ****ing ever ... THEN come tell me how trivial it is.
A minor irritant you have to constantly deal with - is not a minor irritant.
