Not only do they hurt performance, but they're also kind of dumb.
It's space. You're not going to find free-floating pockets of gasses isolated in the middle of nothing.
Remove the clouds. In the name of science.

Or as previously mentioned at least make them invisible when you switch to tactical. Ship's sensors can see right through them.
As for the nebulae I always thought that capsuleers had an enhanced view of the universe as we can see all wave lengths of light. In real life nebulas would dim as you got closer to them as the light fills a greater portion of tbe sky, so I am ok with seeing the distant ones. |

The SIGNIFICANT FPS drop that I receive when loading on grid with these legacy clouds is absurd and unreasonable. The clouds are too bright, look outdated, are an obvious nuisance to many players, AND they have absolutely ZERO purpose other than to annoy everyone.
An EVGA 670 should be able to power through a graphic that has been in the game since practically launch day. No, it's not the rig, it's the code/graphic image.
Get rid of the clouds, CCP. Or at least rework them to where the FPS doesn't turn to ****. Thanks. |

+1 Please.
Anoms, sigs, and quite a few missions have very blinding effects that overall degrade from, instead of enhance our experience.

Bump.
Only time I ever have lag issues is in clouds. Makes exploration and some missions problematic.
I like that I have the ability to tweak settings so that things look good but perform well (I'm on a 2008 Macbook, so by no means a powerful machine!) - however the clouds just kill the FPS.
Just the ability to turn them off would be enough - I know I wouldn't mind them if I had the performance, so I'm not personally gunning for them to be removed. |

I can run THREE clients on full settings and keep 60 FPS when not in clouds. ONE client on low settings in a cloud heavy mission/anom/plex (last pocket in Recon 1 is one of the worst due to density) and I drop to 20-30 FPS and my GTX 570 spins up to 99% utilization. 2 or more characters in a cloud pocket is completely unplayable. It isn't my system, it is the clouds. Fix it CCP, let us disable them or stop ignoring the damned issue that has been complained about for years. |

Yup I can report the same issue. 2 Clients anywhere else in the game runs perfectly on full graphics but as soon as I'm in a Grav site etc with clouds I drop to 10 frames per second.... At least give us the option to turn them off.... I'll admit that they look spectacular. Although WH combat anoms seem to be fine even with the more spectacular looking clouds and floating stars/small gas clouds. |

I shall add my approval of such a toggle for particle effects to be included. The aforementioned clouds make my laptop breathe fire and my rather old, but still decent desktop to run at 1-2 FPS. I don't care who this might displease, it's an option that every modern (non-console ported) game has. I'd never complain about the amount of options available, but particle effects need to be there, as they are among the heaviest resource drains.
Also, about someone mentioning wireframe mod - why not include something like the tactical screen from the Homeworld series or Sword of the Stars? EVE combat is meant to be controlled in a similar manner to a strategy game anyway. I would personally love to have the option to move my ship around in a more precise way than double clicking - the Homeworld 2 system for navigating a fleet in 3d space will tie in nicely with the tactical layout, that currently i don't believe is something that serves any good purpose as neither maneuvering, nor information tool (overview has all the distances and is plain better at presenting the information, unless you have a really small screen).

A while ago some dev talked about this matter (inferno or retribution update?). He said they were goin to completely rework the cloud effects but that would take some time, so they did just some optimization to the current system for now. An update on the subject would be nice. |

i5 @ 3ghz gtx 650 ti oc twin frozr II 8gb ram tho this is rather irrelevant in this issue.
60fps in most cases (excluding massive fleets or jita spamdock/jump where i get about 30~40) jump in a radar site with some clouds around, gpu temp jumps to 60 Celsius, fans start roaring, fps goes 10-20 ahem. ahem. cool visuals yes, but m8, they aren't even volumetric. they're just sprites. or whatever they call them nowadays. 2D images with alpha transparency. Come on ! there are open source engines out there that render volumetric @ 60fps on ancient cards (well, sort of ancient :P ) * wooot -optimization- -optimization- -optimization- *

I don't remember having too much problems with the first problems of cloud effects, dropping framerates. Maybe that's because I got used pretty quick to manually set the camera view to avoid looking at cloud effects because of their brightness. Without that additional camera control I was barely able to see anything while navigating my ship through sites with large cloud effects.
At the moment the only real use for cloud effects seems to be making fancy screenshots. Besides that the possible advantage of having a nice view into space while playing is just negated by its downsides. |

^ Yeah that'll get the Devs\CCP to notice this and want to put it on the "To Be Dev'd" list Keep it respectful and non-offensive and people will still read what you have to say.
+1 as this affects my AMD FX-6100 6 Core 3.3Ghz, 16GB DDR3 RAM with a ENGTX 560Ti 1GBDDR Graphics Card. I feel sorry for people on lower end kit when they encounter these. I use to play on my Laptop with Intel G5 graphics on board and it struggled even on medium settings.

Kind of pathetic that the overall graphic engine in this game is still so dated... I could blame the artists for this **** volumetric effects in this game however I know that they are just dealing with a dated POS engine that hogs resources and melts cards whenever clouds are being rendered. Hopefully dx11 will solve the majority of these issues.
All in all, a disable function is mandatory... I'm running an sli'ed machine with a 4gig quad core and 16 gigs of ram and STILL have severe slow downs when entering missions with excessive "fog". |

Love the art in EVE.
However... clouds reverse the experience of immersion by making an uncomfortable (or noticeable) change in frame rate no matter what kind of system you are playing on.
If you don't want to enable players to remove the effect of a cloud, you could opt for the "kill cloud option" to produce a simple reduced visibility range. This option would be visually striking as the star background would disappear into darkness- only close objects would be visible... etc. and the best part: the frame rate would INCREASE. Lots of 3d games use this fog of war kind of option- players would be familiar with it already... and it would add a creepy effect to the environment.
Imagine- things go dark except for close objects... and when the NPCs spawn and attack... their missiles and gun fire seem to come out of nowhere... you can still target them but it adds to a more dramatic and immersive experience.
Cheers!

These fps issues are usualy caused by overdraw. Basicly in layman terms when transparent textures overlap each pixel has to be calculated and recalculated multiple times before its final color is decided. It adds up the more layers there are. And as you zoom in more of your screenspace pixels are affected. Your gpu runs out of its fiullrate capacity hence fps drops even more. What adds to it in eve are transparent menus and now the new system scan overlay. It affects good hardware aswell because then you usualy have post processing and shader effects enabled that add to the number of times a pixel gets calculated on top of it.
Usualy what can be done about it from a developers perspective is to cut down on the number of geometry planes of transparent objects, cutting out the texture via geometry (for instance a transparent texture with a round light source you don't just put it on a square plane but shape the geometry as tight as possible to the part of the texture that is actualy used, even if it adds to the polycount it is cheaper to render), implement fallbacks in the materials that make use of cheaper to render textures and of course optimization of the gfx engine the game runs on. |

Its not even the FPS rate that's the real problem - its more that you can't see a damn thing because the clouds are so bright.
At the same time, please fix the Sun problem where its so bright you can't see where you are flying or anything at all... thanks :-) |
