I've been playing since December 2007, so basically the start of 2008. I got into EVE at the Trinity expansion and was instantly hooked on the ideas the game presented.
- Non consensual open world pvp
- World Building / Empire Building
- Offline Leveling
I was writing my life story about all the alliances I've been in since 2008, but then I realized it was kind of a long winded rant that wasn't going anywhere. Instead I want to offer you my perspective on what nullsec used to be, and what it is now.
Then (2008-2010) Nullsec used to be several medium sized alliances competing for resources and space against each other, they would form temporary coalitions to defeat a common enemy but those would dissolve quite fast and the next era of nullsec sov wars would begin.
There were few supercapitals and the Titan had the classic doomsday, which was ok because Titans were rare (supercap proliferation was in its infancy). There was a far wider range of fleet doctrines because the missile / nano nerfs hadn't been leveled yet. This presented an interesting and ever changing battlefield.
People actually lived in their space and sov was tied to owning POSes in a system.
The Transition (2011)
The sov wars that led to the downfall of the NC (and its later Resurrection). The supercarrier era, many FCs wouldn't even fight if the enemy had one more super than their fleet did. Coalitions were forming to fight other coalition in a death spiral that created the NAPs we know today.
This got pretty extreme. At one point I was a scimitar pilot in the NC, and I remember several occasions where we formed on a Titan for 8 hours and went home without a fight. One day the FC actually told us why, and we were collectively pissed that one supercarrier was enough to destroy all confidence in our abilities.
There was a transition in nullsec mentality towards the meme spewing ~gudfites~ CoD culture we see today.
Incarna sealed the deal here too, lots of people quit not just because of Incarna but because of how crappy nullsec was.
Now (2012+)
Many nullsec alliances laugh at holding sov, preferring to sell it to those who still think it matters. Individual alliances no longer matter, as we are now in the coalition era. The current strategy seems to be let the enemy take all your space, wait, and take it back when they get bored.
-A- has taken that philosophy to the logical extreme by dropping all their sov and waiting until the CFHBC (lets be honest they're the same group - some alliances even are members of both) to get bored with beating up on them.
The most successful alliances are supercapital blobs that use titan bridging to power project across huge regions of space for the sole purpose of ~gudfites~.
Many people no longer use their space for money, they just do incursions on a hi sec alt in TVP.
How can we fix this? If we want to return to the classic nullsec of 2008, there are 3 problems.
- Supercap proliferation - They're proliferated. That's the problem. Something needs to be done about supers, and I don't mean nerfing them. They need to be buffed so that they're worth fielding but made easier to kill so that fleets have a chance. I have no idea how to do this, maybe you do?
- Incursions - The white elephant in the room is hi sec incursions. They've made it more worthwhile to farm isk in hi sec instead of exploiting space. They need to be nerfed, or nullsec needs to become an isk faucet of epic proportions. Either one works but both have drawbacks.
- Little Things - Nullsec game mechanics are still stale and crap even after the Dominion expansion. Sov needs to be based on system activity, not based on timers and shooting large stationary structures. Holding sov should offer defensive and economic benefits to the holder that make it worth living in, and outposts need to be destructible. Lots of little things.
The following are NOT problems with nullsec in my opinion.
- Teh Blobz - Ever since my first trip to nullsec in 2008 the blob has been the staple of nullsec warfare. Sure the blobs are bigger now, but the idea is still the same. The blob isn't keeping new alliances out, the fact that half of nullsec is a NAP is.
- Lack of Small Holdings - Nullsec has never been about small holding, it has been about empires fighting for survival and dominance in an ever changing landscape of drama and politics. Small holdings are wormhole space and lo sec, try there.
- Titan Bridges - The problem isn't the bridge's power, it is that it is so easy to use and there are so many titans available to do it. Solve the problem of super proliferation and you'll bring this into line.
Things are only impossible until they are not. |

What if: instead of paying to hold sovereignty, you GOT PAID to have sov. A specific amount per system. Good money, like really really good money. Wouldn't all of nullsec erupt into war as the ~elite pvp~ dudes who dont care about sov in its current incarnation because its useless want to take some?

not everyone in nullsec strives to being a blob, but its assumed way to much,i think some people drop sov simply because they dont plan to join any blob..including the enemies of your enemy so they let it go...the sov itself is not worth what it leads to in the way of playing their game.
also ive been thinking about nerfs...nerfs bother me...because i was told by ads for eve that this was the boldest game in the world...breaking the molds going where other games did not.
but i can see eve mirroring the reality in becoming a safety culture...nerf everything until everything is tamed and predictable...no sudden movements...maybe ccp should try be that bold creator and shake stuff up...why should everything be tamed and predictable?
why are we seeing the same fleet comps and tactics over and over...always benefiting the blobs?
maybe null need a viable wild card factor here and there making small entities able to wage war without joining the blue sea.
if null is gonna change ccp must give they who live there the tools to do it.

problem is that very few actually have the will/ability to fight against these coalitions and those that do really have no reason to risk fighting
waiting for them to rot is just easier really, no 1 wants to deal with super blobs and sov grinding |

maybe ccp should just dig up the old old old notes on the design plans for nullsec when they started on eve. dig out all the napkins and scribbled drawings and designs, maybe even dig up the old vet devs who was there and pick their brain about what the idea was from the start.
i seriously doubt they implemnted the full ideas they had due to time/budget contraints and got distracted by stuff along the way.

do you seriously consider highsec incursions a problem ?
(some) of the real reasons why nobody want's to live in nullsec are the following:
1. industry sucks (really bad) - highsec production slots and refineries are basically available for free and in abundance, it is also nearly completely risk free - a good nullsec refinery can never be in the same spot like good nullsec production slots,
- nullsec mining is MUCH worse than highsec mining if you calculate downtime due to reds and bad ores like spodumain that have to be mined in order to get more of the good stuff
- Solutions: -- Modular starbase system that allows building a starbase that offers loads of production slots to be combined with great refining capability -- add quite a lot of lowend minerals in the nullsec ores that currently suck (spodumain and gneiss)
2. passive alliance income - alliance income currently comes from holding valueable moons
-Solution: -- more active income by taxing members for stuff like usage of production lines, refineries, trading and all other kinds of income generation
lack of smallscale pvp targets - hostile gangs can only disrupt active income generation and travel, this is mostly boring, not rewarding and there is no reason to undock other than "i would actually like to fight these dudes"
- Solution: -- hostile gangs should be able to destroy, sabotage and disrupt all kinds of income generation, from PI installations to inventions and production lines. there should be plenty reasons to stop the dudes currently roaming through your space, because they actually cost you ISK and time instead of just beeing annoying We are recruiting german-speaking PVP players, contact me :)

I have my own suggestion for a partial solution. Currently their are only a few power blocks in null, and a lot of the space these blocks hold is very empty. The amount of space you own is not based on how much you can OCCUPY like in the real world, but on how many ihubs you can bash. I have a suggestion for how to force alliances to hold less space not through things like taxes, but through actual gameplay.
My solution in thread form: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=184770&find=unread
Basically Goonswarm can instantaneously teleport an entire armada across their space to defend any given point. In the real world if you attack an empire at a point where very few people live, your likely not to encounter very much resistance until the owner can muster an army and move it to that point.
Imagine for a second if during D-day one soldier with a flare gun could instantly bring in every member of the german army, that is what it is like in eve.
I propose getting rid of cynos in sovereign null. Jump freighters, covops cynos, and rorquals may cyno just as they do now, and NPC null, and empire low will be totally unchanged for all ship types.
At the same time I would BUFF titan jump bridges. Now you may jump both to and from a titan by using a jump bridge or another titan. The downside is now a titan has to use a stargate and move into the destination system. For traveling from sov space to NPC null and lowsec, an alliance would have to setup a anchored cyno generator in a heavily upgraded system that can jump capital ships back and forth from cyno safe space.
Under this system alliances would have to strategically distribute their capital and sub capital fleets. It would require additional effort to maintain a large empire, and any attack on someone far away would leave your space semi vulnerable. Titans would no longer be glorified jump bridges, but would be beneficially to remain vulnerable and on the field in a roll that resembles the flagships titans were intended to be. Because less space would be held by large entities, more pockets of space would open up for weaker alliances to move in populating empty parts of null sec. Providing more people to fight. Battles versus large entities would be more tactical, instead of just being how many supers we can log on or sitting around a titan waiting to be dropped in.
Also more supers would die and be unable to surprise ********* you from across space, fixing super proliferation. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=174097 Separate all 4 empires in eve with lowsec. |

So if they got rid of jump bridges and cynos and titan bridges and everything was gate to gate would anyone really attack us? I mean really? Whos gonna attack us? And why would they? Somebody please invade us! But why would they? Why does anyone attack anyone? We attacked ncdot and took all their moons and space because they broke an agreement and the moons are good money and gave the space and a lot of moons to allies who it was an upgrade for.

Someone nearby? I mean your space is really big, if most of you live in VFK and another entity attacked you or one of your allies what is closer to said system, them or you? Are you really gonna go 10+ jumps with capital ships to fight over a system that nobody uses in your alliance? The system in question could belong to a reasonably powerful alliance and their home base could be only 3 jumps away. If one of your coalition mates is under attack would it be really worth it to go all the way over their to help them across multiple regions? How often will you guys be able to field large fleets if action isn't a titan bridge away and people start to get somewhat frustrated? Say your under attack on multiple fronts by multiple people, you have to go all the way across your space to fight each of them separately when before you can just be bridged in and rapidly redeploy once it has been taken care of. At the very least goons would have to deploy separate fleets to fight on multiple fronts make stronger alliances far easier to combat.
If some 200 man alliance sets up sov 20 jumps away that only borders an ally are you going to drop capitals or even a large subcap fleet on them? No. Now the usefulness of coalitions becomes less across large swaths of territory like what you hold.
Say a hypothetical test vs goons war happened, both sides forces would have to be permanently stationed near the fighting. Then if at any time someone attacks your territory on the other side you wouldn't have the ability to defend both sides, making a large territory unmanageable or at least significantly harder to do so. Your power would only be projected locally opening up new opportunities for new alliances to move in.
If CCP added farms and fields who would have the power to hold them all? The person with the most forces, because those forces would have the power to project their entire fleet across the whole map. It would just be the same as moons but more spread out. In all seriousness HBC and CFC could conquer the entire game if they wanted to, but they don't. If all of null was equally valuable their would be great incentive to just keep going. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=174097 Separate all 4 empires in eve with lowsec. |

High Sec incursions are a problem, and they aren't all at the same time. I've mention the pretty rank unfairness of being able to take a priate faciton ship and make the same isk (MORE when you factor in LP) with it than you could in null sec in a situation so safe you don't even have to have local chat up, and where the FC is doing all the mental heavy lifting for you. The worst that happen to you in high sec incursions is someone preloads certain sites or someone tries to awox by withholding reps (or ISN decides to contest EVERY site you go to, damn griefers ).
BUT, and this is a big but, overall Incursions aren't a huge isk faucet. Their is a solid cieling for how much they will pay out (only so many sites per system, and you will sometimes get contested, and only so many high sec incursions going on at once for people to spread out to.
Also, incursion isk is offet by the fact that all the people who were running missions and exploring in the incursion region can no longer do that. Sure, some will just move to another place till the incursion passes, some will join in on fighting the incursions. But some just won't log in till the incursion passes. So high sec incursion stiffle at least so isk making while they are going on.
I don't know what can be done with incursions, or even if they are a real problem, the last nerf almost kill the incursion community as the fair weather isk makers left, incursions are one of the best things in EVE and imo are fairly balanced as is.

Slowing supercap proliferation isn't going to change anyhting with titan bridges. Titans rarely die so the same level of force protection will survive just about for ever. I love bridges and titan bridging, it makes life easeir in null sec, but truth is, jump bridge range (and all jump capable ship ranges) probably need some serious nerfing. |

So in order to control the vast amount of space you currently have, your coalition would need to stay spread out instead of sending the ktichen sink across all of New Eden to deal with that five man battlecruiser roam. Players in null would need to actually occupy and constantly maintain a presence in space they want to keep. Shocking I know.
In no way am I saying there does not need to a slew of other changes to the game, but being able to send your military force over to one side of the map in the morning and be back home (no matter where in galaxy that may be) in time for tea is incredibly broken. I remember you. Last week, in less than two siege cycle time, we formed up a fleet and cyno'd across four regions to slam dunk your dread fleet somewhere in Derelik low-sec. The whole time you were sperging in local and cursing at us incoherently. Getting wind of a small dread fleet in siege, forming up a vastly larger fleet and crossing four regions in less than ten minutes. Some will see that as great logistics, but I see that as EVE being a very tiny, tiny sand box.

I actually lol'd at the comment on incursions. From what I can tell, at any given time there are no more than a couple of hundred players running them, at least half of which are making no more isk than a skilled L4 runner or multiboxing miner would in highsec. The ones that do make more isk do so in fleets that run with machine-like efficiency, with extreme focus placed on min/maxing their numbers. And that's not even counting the time it takes to actually get into a fleet, or travel time spent between incursions.
Compared to a skilled null player making a consistent 100m+/hr at home, with no time spent waiting to get in fleet.... thhief ghabmoef |

I will start by saying, -A- are my EVE nemesis, my enemy. They will be as long as I play EVE. They are laughing at me, they don't care. They shouldn't, I am nobody to them. That's just the way it is with me and -A-. Saying that, you are right. They are being over kill, blobbed out but I respect -A-. They are a null foundation in EVE. Any fool who thinks they beat -A- because they killed some TCU's or ganked them down and took some supers or a T3 fleet? They don't know -A-. -A- will fight on their own terms and you won't kill them. Ever. Mark my words, they will be back.
-A- aren't here to 'win EVE'. Many in the game that hold the dotlan crown are. That is creating the problems we have in EVE. Efforts to make an I-Win button and say "I won EVE". It's easy to get caught in this mind set in EVE. It has the optics of I-Win. Battles by and large are pointless because you can, if you are a vet, you can determine a winner from the docking station or cloaked outside the blob. Most fights don't need to happen. Ask -A- and you will get the same story. EVE is a survival game where assets are the power that make SP work.
For me, and here is the kicker for CCP, I can do that with 3 months of Subs a year. I don't need to be paying for the other 9. That is a serious problem for them. I'm SP stable. I don't need any more and I know it. It's the case for many Vets in EVE. SP has lost its meaning because Blob trumps. Blob is the "I-Win".
I'm starting to ramble but in a nutshell I can't be bothered to try and "fix" EVE. Not my job, not my objective. I'm here to play. I don't have to tools to meet my objectives. So I wait and I watch. I do what I have done better than anything else I have done in EVE. Evade pointless combat. If CCP has a company goal? It should be to figure out how to make me and many like me stay a paying customer for more than 25% of the year. Either way, me or someone like me will one day upset the apple cart when that moment arrives. All CCP need to do is stay out of the way. |

The problem with supers is the obsolesence of the idea that they are supposed to be so far above average.
Which is why I said price hikes is not the way to go. I'd prefer to see supers in the 5-10 bil range in regards to buildcost. with regular caps not far behind, Tackle and ewar immunity needs to go. Ehp needs to get knocked down to maybe 10 mil tops for titans to make stuff blow up more ofthen. Supercarrier vs Carrier DPS also needs an overhaul, if regular carriers could use Fighter bombers we'd see alot less supers out there relatively quickly.
Changes like this would make current supercap pilots pissed off though as their investment drops in value. Hell, Im in an alliance and corp that has invested conciderably into supers and we'd see alot of money flushed down the toilet if something like this is implemented. Does not make it any less necessary however. ______

If supers were extremely powerful I would be ok with that. The main problem is that they escape easily and can easily be used with 0 chance of being destroyed. The moment you loose point on a super it can vanish and be across the map.

Supers might be a problem but they are also a lense. People want to be on the field longer than 12 seconds, they get in a Super. Every nerf, buff, expansion, patch has evaded the one constant in EVE. Nothing tanks below super capitals. For reasons unexplained, CCP have refused to make Defense a valid play style. We adapted and simply refuse to fight battles we deem not worth the loss or loss of no strategic value. They can have it two ways. Fights that don't always end in a kill mail or no fights. They choose no fights. |

Supers rarely get fielded because they are to expensive to risk in small numbers and when they do get fielded it's usually when you have the confidence of numbers on your side. Defense is a perfectly viable playstyle, I have survived being primriaried in 500 man fleet fights. I wont say it's easy or common it all depends on how many logis/triage carriers you have on field. The problem is not that we don't have the means, its how you make it happen. Being alpha striked is a part of mass pvp, if you don't like it stick to small gangs.
Supers also helped with that problem by nullifying subcaps before the nerfs. Sov grinding is a painful process without supers and dreads.
Most problems in nullsec can be traced to supers in one way or another. Sov mechanics, capitals being useless without supers on call and mineral prices being the most prominent. ______

You will notice I said, they might be a problem but... and I also pointed out why they are. They have blob tank and unique to the game in that way. There is no magic bullet, no one problem that can be eliminated and EVE will be fixed. They can get rid of Supers, sure that's the easy fix. Then people will go back to blobbing with dreads. There still won't be a viable way to defend against Alpha and there will still be the option to not participate. As you pointed out. If you think 80% of EVE not participating is par for the course, this thread ends for you. That's the way EVE is now. |

being able to cross the galaxy within minutes is a huge problem that needs to be fixed but also the issue with supers is that they promote blobs(to defend or kill supers) which in turn promotes coalitions to ensure you have the numbers required to out blob everyone else which brings us to exactly where we are now, massive blobs that are not worth even trying to fight against
supers were supposed to be rare but CCP underestimated the players ability to produce them while at the same time CCP kept adding more and more isk to the game which only helped to produce more supers
in the end i honestly think supers were a massive mistake, it should of stopped with carriers/dreads but its something that really cant be undone without starting a massive **** storm |

Supers are a non-issue now.
General power projection for jump drives and titan bridges is still a big issue, but not the actual place of supers in the chain of combat escalation, which people in this thread still seem to be harping about 8-10 months too late.
The problem with nerfing power projection right now is that it is currently the only way people manage to get fights in a galaxy where there really is no reason to fight anyone else. Therefore, a power projection nerf needs to coincide with the addition of features that increase localized gameplay so people don't want to go halfway across the galaxy to drop on someone because they have their own close to home content. |

Perhaps if we remove projection of power the size of territories would be reduced and maybe more people would move in remove the needs for NIPs and just having gudfites anyway. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=174097 Separate all 4 empires in eve with lowsec. |

There is still the problem of alliance revenue often being tied to holding vast amounts of space, either to hold far flung moons or holding enough to rent out while still having enough for your own alliance to use.

First point is that NIPs are a good thing for content, not bad. NIPs allow you to engage your neighbors in low end conflict with less fear that it will lead to terrible structure bashing, so they actually increase content by allowing controlled conflict.
As to your main point, I will not disagree that it is a possibility. However, it could also not work that way, leaving an already content starved nullsec even hungrier. The point about needing power projection is that there are so few actual wars worth having that you need the range capability to find a good one. If you only have the ability to attack one region over, then you'll likely have a few hyperpowerful alliances with massive dead-zones in between them, as they can't project power to fight someone worthy, they just demolish anyone brave enough to situate beside them in a desperate need for any kind of group content.
Again, you very well could be right, but you also very well could be wrong. I think there are better ways to approaching the issue with much better odds of positive outcomes. |

It would be better if players didnt have to create nips in the first place but the gameplay and the number of people living in null made such things redundant. If players have to create artificial wars that have no direct benefit then that indicates something wrong.

Complaining about supercaps now, after they've been nerfed repeatedly over the last couple of years and where they're much closer to balanced now (they still need a significant overhaul, but they're nowhere near the game-breaker they were a little while ago), is rather quaint.
If anything, you're complaining about the symptom of a problem rather than the problem themselves - the post-Dominion sov system is based around the ability to chew through gargantuan hitpoint bricks over and over again and the only way to achieve that in any reasonable amount of time is by fielding a large number of supercaps, or a massive blob of subcaps (or both). Titans were never meant to be "cost effective", its a huge ****.-á- CCP Oveur, 2006

I believe that both projection of power must be reduced while value increased.. Goons owning large areas wouldn't be so bad if it was evenly populated. The only reason they control that territory is for consistency and a few strategic moons.
In all honesty if we made all of null worth great isk then it may be possible for HBC and CFC to control all of it with everyone joining them to have access to the easiest rats and ore turning null into a carebear's dream. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=174097 Separate all 4 empires in eve with lowsec. |

Goons make good use of much of their space; Deklein at least, as Tribute is a new acquisition. Goons space has long been some of the best used and best places to kill ratters, fight HD gangs, and so on. The entirety of the CFC is generally a good example of space being used and good places to go to actually find people flying in space to shoot, as good as it gets in a game where nullsec space really isn;t worth using in the first place.

honestly after i first started playing a big part of why i stuck with the game was that players could actually fight to control areas of space and honestly for the most part null news is the story of eve and without it the game would be very dull, kinda like it is now with nothing really happening but it used to be very interesting |

THE space that most of the trailers are about. THE space where most of the news has been genertated. THE space where a sandbox pvp game lets people both sand box AND pvp. This is the single stupidest post anyone has ever posted in GD, and that's saying something. Ohhh sorry there it is actually closely tied with the CSM about main stream news articles in the last 12 months.
As too trailers sorry I did not see any warp core bubbles there, you are just interpreting the trailers as Sov Null space, they may be but they do not have to be about there.
As to sandox and PvP, you mean like lo-sec, Npc Null and Wormhole space.
So as I said being it is a massive resource hog, do we really need it?

If it was changed so that super carriers had a hacking module that made sov structures vulnerable after being held 20 minutes, and it then took say 10 racial doomsdays to kill the thing, would that work better? With the structure other wise invulnerable? Oh and the same goes for all stations making them destroyable. (I know one of you groups would kill Jita 4-4 on the first day)
Or is it more, that the idea of sov structures is the issue? Would it work better if it was handled like fw? Where there are system sites and who ever holds the most sites owns the system. Or perhaps like station offices. Everybody gets a map where they can purchase a system and upgrades for it, but the cost per week keeps increasing 5% every down time until you cant afford it and then you try and catch it on the return. |

First off - I have not lived in low sec for any large amount of time. Have primarily just roamed through it on occasion.
From an outside perspective I do agree that power projection does seem to be too effective. I would personally like to see ALL of null sec get its value buffed to a degree and have more smaller pockets of high value territory appearing. While giving Titans a primarily new role or reducing the range in which they can drop blobs on people.
I see so many empty unused systems that are completely unoccupied just sitting there doing nothing. I would like to see small corporations and alliances attempting to take, use and build infrastructure in said systems. Without having to deal with capitals being dropped on them, not because their territory even has value to an alliance, but 'simply because they could'. At the same time things need to become even more active then they are in order to maintain and flourish these territories.
The idea essentially becomes, is it logistically worth it to bigger alliances to stop other systems from being taken when they don't even use them? With the POS changes this would get even better. But at the moment it seems that large amounts of alliances don't even fully use the regions they occupy, nor do they have to station a garrison in regions they plan on holding because they can simply drop death on one lone frigate. |

i'll give you industry due to slot limits but mining is better on paper, roaming gangs will really only slow you down for a few min, afk cloakers however pretty much ruin a system and that seriously needs fixed
anoms and belt ratting is about equal to high sec incursions and actually higher if you consider faction/officer spawns but again a single cloaky in local can ruin a system
the single biggest thing they can do to help the average player in null is to do something to limit afk cloaking

Also reduce all structure HP by about 50% to compensate.

Proliferation happens. If supercap numbers were some how reduced, people would start complaining about capital ship numbers.
It's about time CCP stops catering to the lazy players with this sense of entitlement for fear of losing money. These aren't the people making the game better, these are the people wanting you to turn EVE in to a game that is like most other MMO's. |

CPP already did the whole "buff hp, nerf damage" thing in Revelations.
That you still complain about the same issue should tell you something about the efficacy of any such solution. I'm a NPC corp alt, any argument I make is invalid. |

You have 10 minutes to pop the cyno ship. I see that as being a lot easier to start a fight in as you can then just go and kill a subcap more easily. Of course that becomes somewhat less if they do get a capital in and then have that light a cyno.
Are cynos greetings to all or only to corp/fleet?
Also is the issue with capitals, that they invalidate subcaps or that they just simply have sufficient numbers so that subcap fleets can not effectively compete? |

When you are doing conquest of some territory your deployment have some purpose, you dont place whole force in one spot and jump where you want in no time.
I guess when CCP introduced this mechanics they didnt think we will have infestation of titans like we have today,so imo they need to change old mechanic and make defending vast sov block less easy .You should have more problems as much more territory you are getting.

I have to agree. As it is there is little to no reason to go on a roam. More times then not it ends up in a gank or 2 of stupid poeple. Camping a system and hoping the enemy will bring a good fight and not just cyno in the kitchen sink on top of you. The faction warfare method of orbiting plexes is interesting and perhaps a derivative of it could be applied to sovereignty space.
Definitely not the exact same orbit buttons and farm for LP system but lots of small objectives that continuously move and recycle, culminating in one big fight for the ihub.
Or perhaps give planets lots of little customs offices with 300k ehp, one for each command center that can be blown up. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=174097 Separate all 4 empires in eve with lowsec. |

There should be mechanics in game that keep the blue listing and the formation of long standing super coalitions in check. Another way to promote more interest, drama and pvp could be to limit the number of characters within alliances/corporations. EVE favours numbers to much.

Interesting from that point of view your SOV systems should be full of players mining, ratting or fighting each other. But your systems are empty. Nobody there. You have to fly half the galaxy to find some fights. Sometimes it's tough to have to many friends.

that's not because people have too many friends, it's because game mechanics do not have enough conflict drivers in nullsec

More alliances and corporations in SOV 0.0 who don't belong to a power block or aren't under the hegemony of some superpower means more fights. Since they will try to defend their stuff. I didn't say anything about numbers in this thread. Just that there should be some game mechanic. The current system which led to the long standing coalitions with nearly no targets left can't be the right way. |

Care to divulge which nullsec alliance you belong to. You know, to give us some perspective on how far your blue list actually extends.

Well i'm looking forward to the day that some friends find the numbers to put yours back to NPC 0.0 or highsec.

You have to go further than that, limit all the corps in an alliance, and also make sure alliances can't coordinate in order to not shoot one another.
Basically, anyone trying to organize a bunch of players needs to have an even more massive heart attack than they do now. I have been playing since December 2007 as well, and I was in heaven when I found this game. Eve has changed quite a bit but change is neccessary and vital to keep the game from becoming stagnant and flavour of the month ships, fits, and exploits.
As I recall about half way through 2008 CCP nerfed micro warpdrives, and the era of speed tanking was pretty much dead. I remember 3 or 4 heavy assault ships would follow our 30 plus battlecruiser and battleship fleets and try and pick us off as we warped to the next gate.
This was awesome in my eyes and I trained to get into my speed boat but was too late, at the same time micro warpdrives and the inability too counter unless you were in a similar ship and setup was not healthy for the game. But the ability too go with 3 or 4 guys and cause havoc on ratting ravens and 30 man fleets was great, but everyone was doing it by the time CCP pulled the plug.
I have not played Eve on a regular basis for close to two years but try to follow the game, forums and patches and continue to train my characters. CCP needs to brainstorm on how to bring back small gangs and kill the nullsec alliances, and coalitions, but it may to big of a monster to tackle and change. anyways im rambling, fly safe...... |

Me personally I think the numbers in TEST and Goonswarm are great, however the massive amount of unused space you have under Sov and the fact that you can and do minimize risk with bridges, titan bridges and jump ships, makes Null kind of pointless and a bit like a hi-sec suburb. Sov is already tied to usage, if you never used or needed the sov nobody would show up to defend it. Fleet losses come at a price. You can't replace player morale with isk, and morale is something that every bloc-level FC in the game thinks of before they commit to a campaign. If you win a meaningless war at a high cost, people are going to ask questions and doubt your ability.
The fact that alliances hold large amounts of space isn't itself a problem, it's the fact that no one wants to even try to fight for new sov because the reward for winning a terrible solar system from a large alliance is a bill. Smaller entities biting at the heels of larger ones are currently 100% able to take sov from existing entities. If you want a good example take a look at WHY SO SERIOUS in Detroid/Wicked Creek who have defeated the mighty SOLAR while their back was turned and have founded their own coalition. There are just very little incentives for scenarios like this to play out right now.
If you made space more valuable, large coalitions spanning multiple regions would become more volatile as they simple become unnecessary. Situations may arise where space is abandoned in order to fight a "greater evil", or specific alliances don't pull their weight, and animosity will grow between allies.
The solution to the sov issue shouldn't be to put in place artificial limits, like a cap on sov systems you can take, a minimum military index, limiting the amount of players in an alliance, or to nerf/remove fast movement. They are only attempts at fixing symptoms. The solution is to address the problem head on. Make space worth holding for everybody. |

There is very little to remove from nullsec because to be quite honest there is very little to take away from it in the first place without drastically changing nullsec life for the worse. When things get added, we can start talking about adjusting certain things. Namely local/dscan/intelligence gathering which is better off being discussed down the road because right now there are more important things to worry about.

There is little to no reason to go to Null now, if you buff null with no draw backs all you will have is a form saying "Sign here for mega alliance membership", as any alliance smaller than a few thousand will just get bulldozed out of Null.
And all the systems will still be empty most of the time just like they are now.

You work inside someone else's system mining, ratting running complexes ect.. and this decreases their Sov level over time. So no not CTAs per say but actual use.
The amount of isk now in the economy as a whole has really made any isk based payments kind of pointless. So I feel a you use it or you lose it is the best strategy.
But we get to find out if we are about to get a Star Wars level event when the CSM minutes come out. Any Spelling, gramatical and literary errors made by me are included free of charge.

Yoru modules can get damaged and knocked out once you start taking structure damage.
Most people don't notice because, once into structure, they die faster than they notice the modules taking damage. Either that, or they are already overheating and not noticing the extra damage.

Remove alliances from the game and get back in sync with the lore that eve is all based aruond Megacorporations. Limit the standings list to max 10 entities for corps as well as players.
Revamp POS so you can have a sov claim module, ship dock module and some other things to make it worthwhile to live from that. |

The basic problem of null is not one of null alone but something buried deep within game mechanics, it is not about supercapitals or capitals alone, as they are symptom of the underlying problem.
Back in 2005 and 2006 50 people in battleships were considered an average to large fleet, but what happened then was that, specific tactics aside, a large fleet would beat a smaller fleet. CCP tried to fight it by introducing capitals and supercapitals which are somewhat cumbersome to use but could act as force multiplier to their fleet. The original doomsday was intended to discourage just bringing a bigger force of ships. In theory it would work, but only as only the one with the smaller fleet had the capital ships. In practice the "blobs" would just grow bigger and bigger as a larger fleet was needed to overcome the capital ships.
More ships were brought into the game, the nano-fleets that started by the end of 2006 were in itself a force multiplier as a few vagabonds and nanophoons would win against a fleet several time the size of their gang. The obvious response was to fly nanoships yourself. In 2008 Nanoships were nerfed heavily as they were a to big of a multiplier to any force that would use them. Falcons were later also nerfed, for different reasons, but in practice they were also a big force multiplier.
The basic problem in EVE is still the same one as in 2005/2006. If you can bring 100 ships, why not 500 or thousands and then put everything you have in force multiplication (Titan-Jump bridges, doomsdays, supercapital-hotdrops)?
The option I would see out of this mess is, to make such blobs to cumbersome to handle and forcefully break down combat into smaller engagements.
For example if any target below the size of a capital ship can only be engaged by a Squad sized group at maximum, the impacts of the already ongoing fight would lead to missiles losing their targets and turrets not being able to track the target. This would of course be quite heavy handed and no doubt it would need more adjustments to the effectiveness of remote repair, but it would be doable and would make huge blobs ineffective. |

...coming in a little late on the conversation, but I do have some thoughts on this.
On the topic of supercaps the solution to me seems pretty straight-forward and obvious. We need more caps. A lot of people get bothered by that, but think about it: the eco-system of capitals is too simple to properly balance it by adding more rolls to existing caps. The problem with merely adding rolls to them is you end up with the equivalent of Titan **** trains w/ area of effect doomsdays. What we need are "game changer" caps to balance them out. There are a lot of good ideas in F&I about how to do this. A few I often cite in these types of conversations are T2 dreads that can only target caps but pack more punch, so that a couple of them could ware down a titan in the time it takes sub-caps to wear one-another down. How about another cap that, again, can only target other caps, but can jam them? What about giving each race's T2 capitals significant race-specific bonuses, so that each is specialized for combating a specific race's capital ship and in like kind has greater defense against another race? Maybe somebody would actually buy a Leviathan, were that the case. These hyper-specialized "silver bullet" capital ships could do a lot to make everyone happy:
- It levels the playing field. Now getting a bunch of titans together only presents a uniform attack strategy that can be easily countered. As a result, fleets would need to be diversified quite a bit to counter "cheaper" one-of defense strategies.
- It de-emphasizes capital warfare just a little bit. Support fleets would become much more important, and the permutations of effective fleet compositions would increase exponentially, adding more strategy and depth to everyone's fleet doctrine.
- The "bittervets" have been crying for years about not having enough to train. Having a pre-requisite of ::insert capital skill here:: trained to V for each variant of T2 capital ship would ensure there are always new caps to train for and get into.
- It makes capital warfare in general more interesting. Just as adding battleships, T2 ships, T3 cruisers, etc... has created a rainbow of PvP strategies for sub-capital PvP, broadening and properly balancing a wider range of capital ships would increase the attack options and defense considerations for all capital pilots. It would allow CCP to utterly rethink how each cap functions. Instead of the nerf - nerf - nerf "balancing" strategy CCP has thus far been applying to caps, we would actually be able to give a buff here, a nerf there, and a new capability where needed to truly balance the capital ecosystem. Nerf - nerf - nerf is all you can do when there's only a few types of ships and no real balancing lateral.
- Industry would explode. There would be fierce demand for all these new capital variants, and from an alliance perspective it would behoove them to encourage their cap pilots to keep as wide a variety of capital ships as possible on hand, so that the strategy brains of the alliance aren't hindered by the "have nots". That means each player will have more caps on hand than they otherwise would, meaning much more ship production. I also believe diversifying the capital ecosystem will result in a lot more dead caps, which of course will need to be replaced. Producers on all levels of the food chain will feel their wallets bulging should this happen.
I could go on... but you get the gist of what I'm saying I think. Diversify the cap offerings and a lot of nullsec and capital problems get solved all at once.
On the topic of incentivising nullsec more, I agree it needs to be done. I would just re-iterate what others have said with regards to incentivising it from the bottom up. I realize alliances need isk to wage their wars, but alliances are made up of players, and players at the individual level need to feel like they are "getting rich in 0.0" if they are going to move with the alliance to 0.0 and start fighting to protect what they have with their ships. Moving tech to rings so the players do the mining seems like a good start.

But yes you are right the amount of hours requires of usage to get and maintain sov would need to be modified as a base value per system.
Or, you just end up going to some place that has more belts or what ever it takes to get to get the activity rolling for the upgrades. Hint, xcbk-x is very close to several system with both ratting and mining upgrades. Those that want to chew on spod with the hope of getting another batch of ABC's already have places to do it. The biggest impediment to mining in null right now is that you can make just as much on highsec ores, and arguably more since the mining buff curtailed most of the ganking. Seriously, the biggest complaint from highsec miners is possibly gettign bumped by James315's friends, if you happen to be in a few parts of Caldari space.
Crappy systems are a reality in Eve. And most people realize that making every system totally awesome, or even upgraded to be totally awesome, would also have downsides. If sov was tied strictly to usage, you would see powerful alliances cherry pick the best systems, and just be glad to not have to pay sov bills on the others. Up and coming corps that want to pick up those "unused" systems are never going to really worry about some group like GSF dropping supers on them. They'll fail because they can only grab the crappy systems and the small-gang PvP'ers will make life miserable even without the hotdrops.
It is one thing to deal with roams and gankers and afk cloakers when you have a system with tech moons, good true-sec, crokite in the betls, plasma and storm planets, and overall easy to upgrade. It's another if the moons just pay for fuel cost, bad true-sec, few belts that are no better than highsec ores, few and lower bounty rats, and a bunch of gas and barren planets. |

Your statement there almost looks like a "If you don't join a major alliance don't bother statement", which again leads to the if Null is so screwed why not just get rid of it.
But I think you would find it a harder exercise for larger alliances to ensure that all the space they claim, crappy or not is being used, while smaller alliance holding just a few systems would be easier as they only have a couple to monitor.
And yes they will get super hot dropped, I had it happen to me in NPC Null, kind of a fact of life no matter where you are in Null.
As to cherry picking, yes they would but they do that now and take the crappier space as well, so at least if they cherry pick there will be systems left over. Any Spelling, gramatical and literary errors made by me are included free of charge.

It's so because the game mechanics are that way. It doesn't have to stay this way for ever. It's a suggestion to CCP that it could work another way which could create alot of activity within 0.0.
Gilbaron wrote: you can not nerf having friends, all you can do is provide content for small groups. myself and others have already listed some examples
Indeed that is needed. Thought that alot of activities in 0.0 don't require very large groups today (mining, ratting, plexing, PI ...).

Do you really know all your "friends" within Goonswarm Federation? Nearly 9000 characters the equivalent of a small town. Do you know all your "friends" within GoonWaffe? Nearly 4000 characters which is still alot.
You must spend all your time keeping in touch with them. If you ask me, i highly doubt that you really know 25% of them in the sense of friend.

Intersting that i don't read anything about friends in your answer anymore. It's a huge mob that cooperates. Most of them faceless and anonymous to you. What you deem fun is not my concern at the moment.

Yeah so true. It's a player made problem on the basis of the current game mechanics. A change of the game mechanics could release us from that cycle. |

I was writing my life story about all the alliances I've been in since 2008, but then I realized it was kind of a long winded rant that wasn't going anywhere. Instead I want to offer you my perspective on what nullsec used to be, and what it is now. Then (2008-2010)Nullsec used to be several medium sized alliances competing for resources and space against each other, they would form temporary coalitions to defeat a common enemy but those would dissolve quite fast and the next era of nullsec sov wars would begin. example: Providence Holders, GBC, Northern Coalition
couldn't make it past this part, sorry
hold on to be fair i'll try again

suppose we can thank BoB for that
biggest problem is that supers just dont die often enough, i'd like to see them seriously lower their tanking ability but also really cut the price, maybe just have like double a carriers tank for moms but lower the cost to 5 bill then a titan could be say 4x a carriers tank with a cost of around 10 bill
that will make sure they die as people wont be as scared to lose them plus smaller alliances could afford them which will allow them to actually attempt to fight the blob |

Thats it, there is no realistic alternative solution to supercap proliferation that doesnt involve a massive price hike in the form of either material cost or buildtime/accessability. Well, this is due to the fact that damage don-¦t really reduces your ships capabilities. You are 100% effective until you explode. If your ship would be less and less effective with damage, slower, modules offlining and so on... then and only then the alpha strike would only be viable for VIP-targets, for the normal case a fleet with numerous damaged ships would be less effective than a fleet that is perfectly fine aside from losing one ship. Until damage will have an effect, fleet fights will remain alpha vs. logi. Yoru modules can get damaged and knocked out once you start taking structure damage. Most people don't notice because, once into structure, they die faster than they notice the modules taking damage. Either that, or they are already overheating and not noticing the extra damage.
That-¦s true, but you have given also the reasons why it-¦s pretty much pointless like this. It will only happen if you are one second away from going boom, so it-¦s basically the same effort as destroying you completely and it-¦s not enough to make a difference, more like a bit of extra overheating damage. that really wouldn't change much, we still had alliances before they released the alliance system, removing it would just force people to go back to having corp level standings which is harder to manage but really nothing would change
