Here's a little story I found on miner bumping.
In the seemingly endless and bizarre search for tears in this game, a complete noob at Eve was humiliated and scammed for everything he had by Erotica1 and friends, including members of New Order / Code. This noob was invited to Erotica's 'Bonus Room' on teamspeak with promises of receiving 7bil+ if he handed over all his noob assets, with further conditions of:
- gathering all assets, including as many corp assets as he could lay his hands on and handing them over
- demanding on Teamspeak he sang (in front of his wife and kids that you could hear next to him) either '*****' by Garbage, some brony theme song as well as other idiotic ideas. The noob pleaded with them not to humiliate him by making him sing this in front of his kids.
The eager noob then agreed to read a random page out of wikipedia, with plans to spend his 7 billion winnings on gametime. After 5 minutes of reading out the page he was then scammed out of all his assets.

It's not just the fact he was a noob; it's the way the guy was completely humiliated with attempts by the scammers to humiliate him even more in front of his small children. Never heard anything so sickening in any game. You guys are F'ing idiots and sociopaths.

It's a game. Nobody forced him to do this. It's not like he was at gunpoint. Why would anyone go along with this in the first place? If you are willing to do all this the lets be honest, you kinda brought this upon yourself. |

The Teamspeak stuff - in case you didn't know, that stuff happens in all games with voice comms; minus the scamming, which of course is one of the features of EVE gameplay. Invite another player into your Vent/Mumble/Teamspeak to humiliate or play a practical joke on him -- fairly common. We can talk about whether it's "nice" or immature or whatever, but it's not exclusive to this incident or EVE players, by any means.

There is a difference between exploiting someone's weakness in the game, be it military, financial or psychological, and taking that exploitation to RL to involve someone's family. The latter is inacceptable. I have no understanding or respect for the people who did this. I find it despicable. |

There was no scamming involved. The guy didn't follow Erotica 1's rules which he agreed to at the start and so he wasn't paid.

His weakness was greed, this weakness is exploited in many ways in real world with real money, maybe more elegantly, but it is exploited. They made him a favor in some way. Good that was just a game and he was fooled about ISK.

Yeah, gotta admit I laughed pretty hard when I read (listened to, really) that one.
But how does my (or anyone else's) enjoyment of this story make this game a "playground for sociopaths"? It's funny, especially considering how far it just kept going by his own admission. No one forced him to do anything, it was like he was paying off credit cards with other credit cards if you ask me, he just kept sinking himself deeper and deeper.
I'd also ask you how the fact that this happened at all makes this a "playground for sociopaths"? I can (and repeatedly have) done pretty much the same thing in WoW, and other games. (I once got a guy to rob his own guild bank to "get his stuff back" )
Heck, Civilization V allows me to make a ceasefire style pact with the Aztec Empire in exchange for all their money, and then betray them on the next turn. Oh, no! Civ games are for sociopaths!
