The tears, OP, the tears continue to fuel our sociopathic nature. So all you are doing is perpetuating it.
Thank you. You made me have a giggle. Once you realize what a joke everything is, being the comedian is the only thing that makes sense. |

Incidentally DSM-5 no longer uses "sociopath." The term has been excised. They are just a brand of Psychopath now. If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there. |

OP, I'd be very interested in seeing qualifies you to label anyone a sociopath. No, I really would, because it just so happens I am autistic with severe comorbid depression (it's more of an acute thing), schizophrenia - paranoia type, and numerous sociopathic tendencies. Sounds like a pretty mean cocktail, doesn't it? Sounds like I should be murdering and torturing small animals, doesn't it?
Yet, I don't. Seriously though, those are only the tip of the iceberg. The range of tests I went through suggest possible other complications as well, but none of them are quite as scary sounding as the above. And yet, I'm not a criminal, I'm not deranged. I am, in fact, most of the time, quite clear headed and able to make sound judgement calls. See, a sociopath with a solid social support network and the kinda friends who don't turn their back just because I get a little difficult to deal with is the kinda sociopath who appears 'normal', but honestly, all sociopaths appear perfectly 'normal' because they're the only people in the world capable of faking it almost perfectly in order to fit in.
And this is why it frequently amuses me when someone refers to someone else's behaviour as 'sociopathic' or whatnot just because it's behaviour they themselves find despicable. Well, I'm sorry, but being a sociopathic doesn't automatically make one morally despicable, and your interpretation of morality is fairly subjective, especially if you're going to apply it to behaviour on a video game. It does, in fact, strongly suggest a degree of projection, though projection of what I am not qualified to say.
Here's a cute little fact for you. A sociopath is less likely to engage in 'morally questionable' behaviour than someone who is perfectly 'normal', but acting on emotions, say for example a crime of passion.
Nobody made this guy do anything. He wasn't under duress, he wasn't bound by orders or the law, he chose all by himself to humour those that would make demands of him. Whether they're sociopaths or not is beside the point. Have you ever watched Funniest Home Videos? It's human nature to laugh at another's humiliation, whether they have mental disorders or not. You don't scare me. I've been to Jita. |

He got whatever was coming for being easy. The fact that someone would even contemplate doing something they are uncomfortable with or humiliated by IRL to gain imaginary wealth on a computer game indicates that they are in more dire need of some sort of help than any Jita scammer. That's not said with vitriol; it's simply the truth. I hope this person gets the help they need to bolster their self image to a point where they would never again even consider taking part in such activity. Rifterlings pirate corporation is now recruiting pilots for lowsec solo & small gang operations. I'll give you a couple stories I've bumped into in EVE.
Guy starts the game and within a couple weeks decides he likes it. So he, buys himself a batch of GTC's, converts to PLEX to sell off, buys himself a nice 70 mill SP char and a bunch of expensive toys so he can "compete". He then loads the expensive toys up in some haulers and gets popped a couple times with that 70 mill SP char.
He gets pissed.
A couple hundred worth of $$$ destroyed.. He was just trying to be "competitive" in the game and can't even get the stuff from market to his base safely?!? So he sells off his char and quits. (my reaction to his whine before quitting was kept quiet "don't let the door hit you on the way out... Attempting B2W doesn't work well if you don't have even enough basic knowledge not to put 12 billion worth of stuff in a T1 indy and try to fly it out of Jita...")
Another one from very early on in EVE for me that has stuck around...
New guy wants to be a pirate and is asking a lot of questions about it.
A "vet" type pirate player befriends him, offering advice, etc... Tells him to build up for a while and get the SP to fly a few ships. He goes so far as to buy this new guy his first cruiser and the like!
So this vet gives advice and tells the guy that when he gets over 6 mill SP, he can join his pirate corp but the 6mill SP is mandatory to fly well enough to do small gang piracy - as well as showing an active KB -- as in interest in actually doing and being involved in PvP.
SO the vet keeps giving the guy info here or there over the months, tells the newbie he live out of dangerous areas and that when that newbie is ready to join up, not to bring isk but ships & fittings to avoid shopping trips back to highsec where low sec status players can hit issues - and that this will happen over time with a new main char on 1 account.
So the newbie finally has the SP, experience, etc - enough to meet that groups minimum join requirements. He talks to his vet friend who then brings him in on an interview with the CEO of the pirate group, "vouches" for the newbie and he's accepted! They tell him to get all his stuff together so they can do 1 freighter run of his stuff out of empire.
They come up, load all the guys stuff into the freighter, kick him from the corp as they fly off with literally everything he'd spend months earning.
Well he did want to be involved in the seedier side of EVE - just not that particular part of the equation.
Just a couple things I've bumped into in EVE over the years. 2 rather different situations. |

The latter is inacceptable. I have no understanding or respect for the people who did this. I find it despicable.
In general I agree, keep it all in game.
I don't see this individual as the potential worst case scenario, obviously we know very little about him. I didn't listen to every word but everyone seems happy he is a parent and not a sibling simply because he said so - for example. The sole purpose of this was to humiliate someone and clearly it was intended to be a public humiliation or I would not have been able to listen to it. If it had been a vulnerable person then there would be the potential for that person to do something silly as a result of that humiliation. Such a thing would likely leave the perpetrators with a slightly bad feeling but it would bring a lot of the wrong sort of attention to Eve, it could be very damaging and potentially game ending.
One of the guys doing this sounded like a younger person but there are clearly adults involved so it isn't something to be put down to kids being kids. I don't think they have the capacity to realise that they crossed the line from an in game scam and into real world humiliation that risks real world consequences. I think that mistake should earn the perpetrators a bit of time away from the game. |

I wouldn't do it, neither. But I can think of many ways in which a human being can't avoid doing that kind of thing because of pre-existing conditions beyond his control.
Do onto others as you would like them do onto you, or however is that said in English.

i hate the weeping, crying type like the OP. The guy getting scammed only got scammed because of his GREED. EVERYONE who gets scammed gets scammed because of laziness, stupidity or greed.
It's as dumb to blame the people who are playing the game correctly for the problem as it would be to blame a player for killing a Hoe in Grand Theft Auto. The problem comes when stupid people do stupid things and the "bleeding hearts" run to their defense.

The guy was a noob. You don't take noobs for all they're worth when you yourself are worth 300 billion or something. What happened to the attitude of helping noobs in this game? When I listened to this I was literally cringing at the effort these guys were going to, half hoping at the end they would declare it a wind-up or something.
And did anyone notice the confederate joke at the end? I'm not even American but I could sense they thought the guy was fair game because of his heavy southern accent.
