"It was - with 25% tracking you will have a lot of misses if you would try sniping yourself."
Oh heck, because am bored:
425 mm rail II, megathron bonus, 2x tracking computers.
* loaded with high damage tech.2 ammo optimal: 47610, falloff: 30 km, tracking: 0.019062
best chance to hit a 125 m large target moving at 250 m/sec transversal (a cruiser) is: 64% at 56 km range.
* loaded with long range tech.2 ammo optimal: 190440, falloff: 30 km, tracking: 0.006354
best chance to hit a 125 m large target moving at 250 m/sec transversal is: 74% at 192 km
plugging in the raw damage values for Javelin and Spike ammo you get: 14.06 dps for high damage ammo, and 9.74 dps for long range ammo. Meaning, long range ammo does 69% of damage you can do with high damage ammo... which is actually more than the base damage difference (36/60 = 60%) thanks to lesser damage loss caused by tracking issues, that happen to benefit the long range ammo.
(for battleship sized targets neither gun has problem with tracking, chance to hit for both at their optimal is practically 95-100% and even then it favours the long range ammo)
So no, there is no damage reduction to 30% of high damage ammo due to tracking issues, because these issues affect both ammo types in the same way.
QED or whatever...

Quote: Yes versus ONE sniper, you actually have to bring twice the numbers AND are restricted to one special ship type and setup. This ratio even becomes worse when you fight more snipers, as one stealth bomber wont be enough then.
No no and no! I said there are 1000 and 1 ways to kill a sniper. Am i your personal teacher??? Do i have to explain everything to you???
If there are 7 snipers camping a gate then you could simply jump in with 7 TANKED snipers! Then you instapop one of them while the target they chose will not pop! You could get a destroyer cloaked to them (using an off-grid-spot) that nails them just before you jump in with your 7 tanked snipers.
There are much more ways to kills snipers. It really makes me sad how uncreative people in EVE are. Why do you need advisors? And then you arent even able to aquire a good militaric advisor - i told you i¦ll do the job for 150, now 200 mil. I clean your territory of snipers with my corp if you pay it. You dont have the ISK??? Then stfu and do it yourself and let me extract some ISK out of people that fly away in a straight line from my sniper ship. They deserve to die because they did not think. Not thinking in EVE leads to being ganked. That¦s absolutly ok.

Yes, there are thousands of ways to kill a sniper if you live in the perfect world where you can magically get ships to any point in the galaxy instantly. Any halfway competent sniper cannot be killed by a stealth bomber or covert ops. I've been over this a half dozen times.

Read, use brain, kill snipers. Snipers are really no big deal. I tell you what really is hard: snipers that have EW-support. Killing those guys is hard

Cruise missiles like the Tomahawk can be launched on thousands of miles distance - and why? Because they can! If you come with some destroyer with normal guns to attack such a ship that is fitted with Tomahawks you will not win this battle, quite simple.

Actually, you have no idea what you're talking about. Since snipers in real life most often work in pairs. A spotter and a Shooter. The spotter will normally carry atleast an Assault Rifle, and often the shooter will too. Both of these soldiers are trained marksman and are significantly better shooters at close range than your random patrol of enemy soldiers. There are, in fact, historical instances that back this up as well. A well trained Sniper and his spotter are both just as dangerous close in as they are at distance.
Secondly, you apparently have no idea how a Tomahawk missile works yet you continually refer to it, especially in this absolutely HORRIBLE and inaccurate analogy you gave about naval ships. The Tomahawk cruise missile, whether being fired from air or sea, is not an actively guided missile. It relies on terrain sampling from satellite imaging (among a couple of other tricks) to know where it is over land. A tomahawk can be redirected midflight to a secondary target, but it won't be able to attack a ship at sea. It would be just about impossible. The missile's guidance and tracking systems just aren't designed to do it. A ship fitted with only tomahawks will be deicmated by a fleet of "normal guns." As soon as they get within a couple miles. Until that point, your tomahawk vessel will be bobbing in the water, waiting for them to come in range so it can open up with its normal weaponry as well. Now, please, shut up.
Please?

"You compare damage output on medium and long range. You should compare a blasterthron DPS to a sniper DPS - then you know how much less damage snipers deal!"
Err what the heck, the wrong team won so we are moving the goal post? o.O
You said that a sniper ship (using tech.2 ammo) is limited to 30% tops of damage output it could do using the high damage tech.2 ammo. Which was proven a bull. There was no word until now that we are supposed to compare a blaster boat with sniping ship, because why exactly should we be doing this sort of comparison when it involves two drastically different gun types is beyond me.
Heck, for that matter you specifically mentioned Javelin as the base to compare against in response to my original point the long range tech.2 ammo does 75% damage of antimatter... while last i checked the blaster charges were called Null and Void. :/

Cruise missiles can be guided by radar, GPS or even cable- or radioguided manual. They can hit your nose if needed. Guns are pretty useless since missiles changed naval warfare. That¦s why battleships have no role in modern naval warfare. See link to learn:
cruise missiles in naval warfare
Snipers have some problems fighting some other soldiers with M249 Saws and M16 on 20 meters distance. On 600 meters things are different. And exactly this can be seen in EVE too. It does not mather if the snipers work as pair or not. In close combat their gun is pretty useless compared to a machine gun.

Cruise missiles are a specific type of missile, and are NEVER wire guided. You also referred to a specific type of missile in your post, which he corrected your mistakes on. You said a destroyer with conventional guns would get blown up by a ship fitted with Tomahawks, he proved you incorrect in this. This is also completely irrelevant to the discussion at hand, unless you can some how tie this into the discussion about sniping ships in EVE being balanced or not.

No, it shows that naval warfare also has long range weapons: missiles! And if a destroyer of world war II would attack a ship that is equiped with missiles it would not even see the enemy. What is completly irrelevant? That some cruise missiles are specialized on ground, some on mobile and some on ship targets. Your post is irrelevant - everybody unerstands here that long range weapons are a part of warfare.
This is still irrelevant to the discussion at hand. 60 year old ships fighting modern ships has nothing to do with this topic.

"Did i exclude tech II blaster ammo???"
By specifically telling me to compare to high damage railgun ammo? Yes.
But if you want me to include tech.2 blaster ammo? Here goes:
* neutron blaster ii with high damage tech.2 blaster ammo. still with 2x tracking computers. optimal: 4165. falloff: 12.5 km, tracking: 0.0571695
best chance to hit the 125m large cruiser moving with 250 m/sec transversal is: 32% at 14 km.
relative amount of damage done with sniping tech.2 railgun ammo in comparison to this: 88%
That's correct, close range blasterboat is actually worse at killing this kind of ships than the railgun ship with high damage ammo.
Of course, this is strawman setup because a blasterthron will want to web and scramble its target, and doesn't have room to fit neutron blasters. Which is why i said this sort of comparison is idiotic in the first place.
But hey, lets use a sensible setup for a change, drop these tracking comps, fit a web instead along with smaller blasters and check again.
* ion blaster ii, x5 web, same ammo optimal: 2625, falloff: 10 km, tracking: 0.0359375
best chance to hit the 125m large cruiser moving with 34 m/sec transversal is: 77% at 6.5 km.
relative amount of damage done with sniping tech.2 railgun ammo in comparison to this: 40%
"And still you calculate on the paper, i use experience to get a view on things. I know for sure that i would do much more damage on short range, roundabout 3x more damage. Blobs or in empire sentry guns force me to use long range ammo - so yes: i am nerfed!"
Sorry, this game calculates the hits and damage using math not your personal experience. Which means your personal impression of how much damage you do ... means squat. Because it's just that, impression.
40% of blaster damage done with railgun over 3000% as large distance. Yes, you are so terribly nerfed here.

I don't understand why people think a solution to a gangs low risk gank snipe fest is just as easy as recruiting a bunch of tanked sniper poppers like they are available at every station ready and willing to go in an instant.
Lifewire is pretty naive when it comes to this... I'm assuming he's usually on the sniping end and has rarely dealt with defending against snipers.
Bottom line, if defending against another opponents acts has lessened to the point where the only counter is more troops and bigger ships, then we're in for more blobs, and more lag.
Simple solution... make a long range target jammer or damper mod. Something that goes beyond your target range and uses a ton of cap.

Shame this thread turned into a steaming pile of ass.
This thread wasn't about goonfleet or the tactics we use. Anyone implying that is does really has no idea what we are about or what we do. Getting killed doesn't matter to us, we are out to have fun first and foremost. To say this thread was posted as a whine because we can't find a way for T1 frigates to beat sniping BS is so patently stupid I'm surprised anyone would post it.
My opinion, like others in this thread, is that there is no viable counter to sniping BS at extereme range. I don't pretend to know what could be suggested or done to fix the problem as I see it. Goonfleet in particular doesn't care if anyone brings a group sniping BS, 100 HACs, or a newbie frigate and slaughter half of our gang. However there is a difference between "They were prepared for that situation and we were not." and "Sniping BS and T2 ammo, nothing we can do."
I've read this entire thread and I did not see any real counter suggested, just a lot of idiotic posts from a few people and a lot of whining about things getting nerfed. A sad reflection on the eve community imho. A few people have actually attempted a real discussion, but they have been forced to respond to the unending trolls.
