Sadly, it's a "top ten" list. Even more sadly, it's all 100% true.
Top Ten Costly Things Davion Vrynn Has Learned in his EVE Career
10. It isnÆt cost effective to fly 15 jumps and into low security to save 2000 ISK on an item. Especially when youÆre still piloting your first frigate. (Cost: An hour and a half wasted and a great deal of stress)
9. ItÆs much easier to sell minerals at a station 10 jumps away if you bring them with you. (Cost: Had to sell for a much lower price closer to home)
8. Just because it has 7 turret hardpoints, does not mean the cormorant destroyer is an ôI win buttonö against a swarm of guristas frigates. (Cost: 1 cormorant)
7. When scouting ahead for the gang in a condor in 0.0, itÆs not okay to stay at the next gate because ôthereÆs only one guy here.ö (Cost: 1 condor)
6. Just because it says so on escrow, a thorax BPC is not a vexor BPC and I should inspect all escrow merchandise. (Cost: 200,000 ISK and my dignity)
5. When piloting a caracal in a deadspace complex, itÆs not okay to fly out ahead of the gang tank. (Cost: 1 caracal)
4. The osprey cannot tank multiple guristas battleships long enough to ôjust finish mining this crokiteö (Cost: 500,000 ISK in armor and hull repairs)
3. Nobody wants to race my interceptor and I should stop asking. (Cost: No cost, but worth noting anyway)
2. Just because itÆs 0.4 and your target has a bounty on him does not make it ôokay to pod the guy.ö (Cost: Security status change from 0.5 to -0.7)
1. The crow peforms well against a rupture and its pod, but poorly against gate sentry guns. (Cost: 1 crow) ----------------------------------------------------

Was the bounty at least worth it?

Top 5 things for me:
5. Raven > Ferox. Nuff said.
4. Yes that Megathron can hit me from all the way over there.
3. Just because he has a 9 mill bounty does not mean it's ok to shoot him in Oursurlaert (2nd week in game 4tl)
2. 0.0 space from Reblier > wherever is not a quick and easy shortcut in a hauler. Yes you almost blew up the Stiletto attacking you with good use of smartbombs and 75mm rails but in the end they will get you.
1. Carrying on 3 jumps in your pod after said loss is also a not good idea.

Here's one you might to be bear in mind for the future (ie;beyond three months):
* Type prices carefully when selling a lot of expensive items. I accidently put 20 Large Beams on the market at 150mil each instead of 1.5mil. That cost my corp nearly 200mil in lost brokers fees and taxes :-/ -- (Battle hardened miner)

Outstanding list, even though the cause of the list isn't.
I'd like to add 2 I discovered:
1. When orbiting an NPC with a Crow in a friend's mission deadspace, make sure your interceptor keeps top speed by not getting caught on all of the various debris. (Cost: 1 Crow)
2. When pretending to be a stealthy sniper with a Manticore stealth bomber in a different mission deadspace for the same friend, do not assume that you can decloak, fire missiles, and recloak without the NPCs and Sentry turrets locking you while your friend is warped out recovering his solo-tank setup. (Cost: 1 Manticore)
And to think I've played (albeit in spurts) since release.
Great list, I'll show this to my friends who just started playing.

Edited by: Kel Kracken on 23/03/2006 16:52:38 The one that always and I mean always has any new (and older ones that have forgotten) members in stiches.
Number 1 rule.
Never target concord in your 1st ever kessie even if you "just" wanted to take a closer look.
Number 2 rule.
When completely ignoring rule number one please make sure that one of your cats isn't about to jump on one of those handy function keys along the top of your keyboard.
End Result: Said cat disappearing out of the room as I'm crying with laughter loudly. Fortunately had insured said kessie and had just completed one mission to pay for the replacement parts I needed *just*.
Still have the pod and replacement Ibis lying around in the system I went back to.

You crusader does not perform well against 10k belt rats when you are heavily intoxicated.
Syndicate is not noob friendly.
trying to kill 30 intys in your dread fitted raven while intoxicated is not a good idea.
BS + no instas + 0.0 + logging in enemy territory = bad idea.

Fitting expanders on a hauler while going to 0.0 just to 'cut down on the number of trips' solo doesn't work.
result: 1 lost Iteron V with 25m of cargo

1st month.
Thinking "that pilot wont pirate me .. his security rating is > 0"
Thinking "Yup. Its a Pirate. Ill just open and grab the stuff in the cargo container quick before I warp off"
Initiating PvP without checking to see what the current security rating of the system your are in is... "Oooohhhhh Thats why he didnt bother to shoot back" |

1. Just because they have a bounty doesn't mean you can attack them in secured space. (this one hurt more my wallet and my pride)
2. 8 guns on a destroyer are not better then 3 guns against a frigate that can stay out of firing range.
3. Gatling guns can kill you if you shoot at them.
4. Always clone ... always clone.. always clone.. I'm getting a tatoo.

2.) Think that just because an eagle is setup for long range that you don't need to orbit at 250m (cost: 1 thorax)

Most of these are mine, some are from The Corp.
20) When doing a mission with someone you *think* is in your corp, don't tap them with a railgun to get their attention, until AFTER they've accepted the corp application. (Cost: One Brutix)
21) When dealing with a pre-RmR ore thief, ensure that you can suicide gank the sucker in a single volley, two at most. Concord shows up FAST. (Cost: Two Brutix (one mine), the entire mining ops profits, and the fracker still got away.)
22) When ratting in 0.0, when a known hostile shows up in Local, don't stop to pick up that one last can beside a large 'roid. His friends are waiting on the other side of the gate and are being vectored to your position. (Cost: Yet Another Brutix)
23) When attacking a gate camp, warp to YOUR OPTIMAL, not the enemies optimal. (Cost: Yea, a Brutix)
24) Don't use smartbombs in fleet battles. (Cost: Corpmates frigate)
25) Don't randomally lock stuff while travelling in empire. You never know when you might accidently try to web a stargate. (Cost: A brand new Ferox) -- Ars Caelestis Public Relations Director The Future is Exciting.

28) Cloaking Devices are not the blockade IWIN button you thought they were. (Cost: 7x Mega Modal Ion Cannons)

11 mil. However, since item #1 followed closely after, I lost more than I gained...

It isn't smart to activate weapons even if your cormorant is bigger than that crow, and the crow looks like a condor. (Cost: One cormorant)
It isn't cost effective to buy 200mil worth of rocket fuel even if you can sell it at 205 mil. Brokers and taxes don't care. (Cost: One mil and two hours' wasted hauling)
You should probably warp away when both ravens in your gang dies and you're the only one left. (Cost: Yeah, I was in a Raven too)

I am so guilty of this, even worse is that most of the time it's in a PvP gang; luckily I haven't been ganked due to this... yet.
