Edited by: Six Anari on 05/05/2006 13:40:41 Announcing to the public, for the first time: EVEMon - An easy-to-use, lightweight character monitor and skill planner
EVEMon has been in development for quite some time now, as Goonfleet's own skill manager. But now, the time has come for it to be unleashed upon the rest of the EVE Universe.
- Easy To Use: Just download, install and enter your information or point to a saved character XML file to get started. It just works.
- Live Displays: All skill and training time displays throughout EVEMon are live. They automatically update as your training progresses.
- Fully-Featured Skill Planning: Everything you'd expect from a robust skill planner, including Learning skills auto-suggestions, implant effectiveness calculators, graphical skill trees, and more.
- Customizable Displays and Output: Columns in the skill planner are fully customizable; character info and plans can be saved in numerous formats, including plain text, HTML and XML; the monitor and skill planner can be run in "work safe" mode to disable images and colors for easier use in places you shouldn't be running EVEMon (you naughty thing, you).
- Skill Templating and Sharing: Skill templates can easily be created and shared with other EVEMon users, each template automatically personalizes to include all necessary skills when a template is loaded.
- Personalized Event Notifications: Send email, play sound files and more when skill training completes.
- Windowed EVE Relocation: If you play EVE on a multi-monitor system, EVEMon can reposition windowed EVE automatically to fill a monitor of your choice.
- Modular: Features you don't use, don't load.
- Open Source: You don't have to trust me when I say EVEMon is safe and secure, you can verify it for yourself. If you're not a programmer yourself, you can still benefit from the trust of scores of people who have already read over the EVEMon source code. You're fully encouraged to tinker with EVEMon, and even submit improvements back for inclusion in the main source tree.
- Actively Developed: Changes are checked into the EVEMon source tree every day, and new features are added constantly. If EVEMon doesn't do it today, it very well could tomorrow. EVEMon regularly checks for updates and offers the optional to automatically install them when they're available.
I could go on and on, but the screenshots can speak for themselves. Any and all comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated, and encouraged; whether praise or flames. EVEMon is where it is today because of the feedback provided by hundreds of goons -- hopefully it can get to even greater heights on the feedback of EVE-O at large. :)
You can get the latest release of EVEMon here.

This is truly an awesome application, and the best skill planner/character manager I have seen. It is lightweight, sits in my taskbar, and lets me monitor multiple accounts at once.
I have used this for a while, and I am glad that Six is releasing this to the community.
EDIT: Please check out the screenshots to get an idea of how awesome this application is.

Please rain ISK upon this man for his amazing work. It first started with the ability to check training times, which was nice enough, but with the skill planner it made it absolutely amazing. And the great thing about it is, it always works, unlike another character manager which will remain unnamed.
100% Recommended.

Been using this for a while now and I've got nothing but positive things to say. The ship browser has the beautiful function that will tell you how long it takes to train for a certain ship (just flight skills, no fitting or gunnery).
Memory footprint for me is just shy of 30 megs most of the time and I make a point of keeping it running 24/7. Great download. :)

I just downloaded and this app is incredible. Definately blows away anything else out there.
Thank you! (and ISK sent as well )

Wonderful little program; robust, unobtrusive and open source. Ended up being the perfect monitor for me. Bugs are fixed and updates are put out at staggering rate.

I can't seem to check it out... do you have the repository in your www directory? It could be my problem too, I'm not exactly a subversion virtuoso :)

Edited by: Valarkin on 05/05/2006 15:16:04 Looks quite wonderful.
A question though: How do I get it to update if I change the currently training skill?
For example, I stopped training Industry V to follow the suggestions EveMon made, but it still shows Industry V as the currently training skill.
Great work though, truly.

Originally by: Valarkin EDIT: NM, I found it, click the sunburst looking thingy in the top right corner of the app window. Woot.
You can click that to force an update, but keep in mind that EVE-O caches your character data for an hour, so even when you click for a manual update, it still might show the old skill being trained, or other old character info. The timer next to the sunburst shows how much longer your character stats are cached on the EVE-O servers; so when that counts down to 0 and EVEMon automatically grabs new character info, you can be pretty well assured that any changes will show up. (Though I've gotten reports that they're sometimes caching your ISK balance for even longer, several days in some cases!)

Hmmm, mightn't it be better to override the cache in the case of a manual update?
Still, I do think this is one very slick program. Three atta-boys to the dev team.

The cache can't be overridden, it's put in place by CCP to keep the load on the cluster down. If you check out your character info on the website you'll see the older data there, too. EVEMon does set your SP total back and everything when it finally gets fresh data though, so there's no long term side-effects.

Just looked at at the Retriever in EveMon and it claims that thre is a prereq of Astrogeology IV. The Eve-O information screen shows only a prereq of AstroGeology III.
Just a FYI.

Show Info on a Retriever in game is showing me Mining Barge III and Astrogeology IV, so does the ship database on the website.
edit: Astrogeo III is required for Mining Barge III, but the Retriever requires Astrogeo IV on top of that. The ship browser in EVEMon only shows the root skills needed for the ship, the prereq skills are implied. :)

1) I Love this program. I'd send a donation, but my total worth is probably less than you make in an hour.
2) Load from file is not quite right.
If I load a character from file whose name does not match the account name, it will throw a null in CalcSkillRemainText, since there is no CharLoginInfo. If you bypass that, the skill tree still won't load, and none of the data, including name, will be right. I'll dig a little more :)

I've been using this program for a few months now and I have to say this is SO much better than the Eve Character Manager. It loads quick, and if there is a problem, it is usually fixed within a week.
Try it, and if you like it, give this fine programmer your Isk.

Ok, I fixed it, now all I need is a svn password. Bugfixes are as good as ISK, right?
We should probably take this off the boards anyway, I'll shoot an email to the addy in the about box.
Thanks again for all the work you obviously put into this... very polished, and the code looks pretty pretty, too :)

Bugger, I wasn't looking at the Secondary Skills :\ Consider me suitably chastised.

Wow, this works so much better than ECM does for me.
Just one thing though... i'd like to be able to maximize the program (you can maximize the planning window but not the main window itself) so could you enable this... at the moment the button is greyed out...
Thanks

Edited by: Lickety on 05/05/2006 19:15:03 Looks very nice and was even able to make it work for a short while. Two comments though.
1. When adding a character from a saved XML file, if the account has more than 1 character, and the character is not in the first position of the XML file, EVEMon will raise an exception.
2. Settings should probably be saved to a file and not to the registry or wherever you have it hiding. Easier to manually recover from #1 during this testing phase.
edit: dug some and discovered the real condition of the exception...

Lickety: #1 has been fixed on svn already, so it'll work on the next release
#2 It's in your Application Settings folder, like a good lil .net program

There are several different save formats for both characters and plans. Select from the "Save as Type" dropdown that's in the save dialog, right below where you type in a filename. The HTML is kinda ugly at the moment, but it'll look better when I come up with a decent template.

Originally by: Lickety Request... Any chance of adding module skill dependencies just as you have done with ships? =)
It's in the works. I'm planning on adding in a ship fitter that includes a button you can click to list/plan the skills necessary for the ship as fitted.
