Despite of all that, we're already paying, so we're supposely to be also alot of good future features that a free player can't get. Like the trial accounts, its better off to be only aviable to subscribbers like its been before for most skills.
If I need to pay one buck for this. If I lead a corp, I rather pay extra 12 bucks and provide it for my corp they can use for free and without any hassle for being charge extra.
Oh and where that 12 bucks or so will go? Ventrilo. Don't like TS.
And if it's 3 bucks not 1, and if your corp is 400 members strong, are you still going to open the wallet every month

Kk, enough with the content/feature debate. I think the Author is more concerned about whether this feature/content is useful enough to warrant anyone paying extra for it. It almost seems out of place when considering CCP and their EVE package. I'm going with the masses here. I dont think its particularily useful. *unless it comes with a pair of boobie toggle switches*

Seriously:
- We don't know anything yet

- From what we do know... it sounds TOTALLY AWESOME. Gang hierarchy communication = best idea ever.
- 1-2 bucks a month is SO worth it -- for Voice comms as they are now, not to mention this totally awesome system
In conclusion: FFS we don't know anything yet, and for all the whining on these forums... CCP rarely fails us, the players as a whole.

yeah i dont understand this decision at all.. TS will still be used by the majority, as you have more chance of getting everybody to go on that than to pay extra for something in the game that you can get for free.
I seriouly hope CCP will reconsider either the introduction of the software or the cost, because as it stands, it will be pointless.

Its no different than paying for a Vent or Teamspeak server that most people who run a corp or guild already do. The main difference is this is a voice program designed specifically to work with eve... so if this is all your guild uses vent or ts for... then this might be a better option along with the added bonus of helping CCP out.
But as the guy above me stated this isnt additional content, its a new embedded feature.
please enlighten me where you draw the line between content and "features"? http://www.eve-online.com/features/kali/ contains all the features coming with Kali. Would you pay extra per month for tier3 battleships as they are listed as features? Or how about the contracts system?
content = features, and features = content.
If you've ever worked in product development, you would be aware that features (=functionality) and content (often a new instantiation of existing functionality, like say a new ship model) are similar, but not exactly the same.
However this really is a different category all together, in the form of a new service. EVE provides an 'integration' in their software (the interface to the new voice comms program) while a third-party company provides the service itself. The interface is provided for free, but you can only use it if you pay a service fee to the company that is hosting the voice comms.
From a technical point of view this is probably a smart move. By offloading the VOIP/comms to a third-party software, you prevent a lot of issues like we see in other games with integrated voice comms, including lag, bad implementations etc etc. A simple integration with a third party running voice comms would probably only create minimal overhead for EVE itself, while the actual voice comms load is handled by a different infrastructure all together. I guess you could compare it to the TS overlay program's behaviour.
I do however agree that the payment model is not what I'd like to see either. I would rather see a model where corps or alliances pay for a single server with unlimited use of anyone in said corp or alliance. Then it is up to the corp/alliance whether they pay for it or not, and whether one person pays, or people pool their money, etc etc. To cater to the NPC corp players, it should also be possible for individual players to rent their own service for use in gangs etc.
Still, as long as it's not mandatory I don't really care about it either way. People always have the option to use TS or Vent, and as long as that remains I really don't see why anyone should have issues with it.

OP is confusing a service with content...
but on a note many are singing...WTF is CCP thinking?!?!?!
Loads of FREE (as in NO Fing CHARGE FOR USAGE) tools are already in use "hey, they breath air don't they? lets sellem air...".
Pay attention to the code CCP, make the game into a masterpiece, don't wonder off into services and other craptastic marketing schema's that will cost you clients in the end. (i.e. EA ideaology...)

Thing is, if it's no better than vent, no one will use it.
Problems with that will be if it's on a per user basis - not everyone is prepared to pay extra. I don't mind footing the bill for a TS/vent server, if all my corp can use it, but I'm not going to bully them into paying more RL cash to get 'evevox'.
If it's 'properly integrated' with tiered gangs, and the EVE client, it'll be worth switching to, assuming it's no worse than any of the alternatives for voice quality and maintainability. Having a corp role to 'admin' it would also be very cool.

Why doesnt CCP just have a ****ing poll set up, its quite simple:
Q: would you pay for a VOIP service if it was integrated into the EVE Client for XXX cash extra per month?
A: Yes No
(please tick one as appropiate)

They should allow an alternative to pay monthly with ISK. They could make it more of an in game lore with it too if they were to do it that way.
Allowing corps/alliances to pay monthly for their members with ISK would also be a good alternative with the possibility of group discounts between certain numbers (1 - 10 memebers, 11 - 50 members, etc).

I agree with Berak FalCheran. Until the feature is actually in game no one can really judge the value of the system. I wish people would just wait and see how it turns out, it may end up being better than what people expect.
It sounds like it will be an opt in service, so if you don't want to use it, don't pay for it. But I am certain the system may work out great for a lot of other people who don't want to setup/rent their own TS/Vent server. If it costs them $1 or $2 a month on their subscription, and it's easy for them to start using, then those users/corps may prefer it. Plus, they can still use TS/Vent if they really want to, no one is really getting hurt here at all.

Edited by: Yblarbo Janks on 15/05/2006 17:15:53 Ugh! I was told it was free.
HOWEVER, the reason I see why they would pay for it - this isn't from CCP. CCP is integrating VIVOX's technology into their game, and the entire load of the voicechat is done on VIVOX's servers - so you won't experience Lag.
So them saying "CCP wont charge you for new CCP Content" still holds true.
Lastly, I heard it in action. It was freaking Sweet Quality.

I think the only way that this VOIP deal can't fail is if the client can be a seperate program from Eve and if you can buy a group package where you can have x amount of people in your VOIP channel. Otherwise why would people use it when TS and Ventrillo are much more convenient?
This also reminds me when Oblivion was about to be released and the fanboys were saying how you can't judge a game until you played it and not base your decision on what you hear in the previews. Well, turns out that the game was a poor RPG but a decent action game just as many, myself included, predicted. It is the same way with this VOIP deal. I don't like what I am hearing right now and unless CCP or Vivox turn around and address the problems I can't see much use in subscribing to this service as there are better alternatives out there. ___________________

I see CCP developing see this as being a long term goal rather than a "let's hope the current player base buys in to it" goal. As far as the current players go, they are already setup with comms. Between TS and Vent, and the fact that they are free, current players will have no reason to switch over, unless the new system is really something special or CCP figures out a way to make it a standard without the help of the current base; ie; through new subscribers.
I see this being aimed at the new players coming into the game. "Buy our VOIP, everyone uses it!", or something like it will be the ad, and they will buy it. Eventually, so many will get it that the remainder of the the population will need to get on to keep up with the masses. I'm sure CCP will have the foresight to make the VOIP subscription in term with your game subscription, so that once you pay for it, you feel obligated to use it, instead of the other software programs.
I agree with the thought that this development is pretty useless. It only takes one person with an extra computer added to their network to run a TS server from their house, for free, and this server can be used 24/7/365, whether the Eve servers are online or not, and whether they are online in Eve or not.
Personally, I use TS to talk with family abroad, so I'll never really have a reason to get rid of it, and also use it for comms with mates in other games. I just don't see CCP/Vivox being able to offer the kinds of verstility, at a cost, that people are used to getting for free.

Im really sad to hear that CCP is working to put VoIP to EvE when theres no need to do that. There are a lot more important things to improve or fix. Big minus for CCP for that from me.

We know several things about it... We know itll cost money, we know itll be part of eve hence voice comms die when the game dies = major disatvantage and we know there will always corp/alliance members who cant/wont pay for it.
I personally will never pay for it, we have a free vent server, it keeps running when my eve crashes and every single corp member can log onto it.
I dont really care how cool the new voip system might or might not be, if as much as a single corp member doesnt subscribe it becomes useless. -----

Is TS useless because Ventrilo exists? Is Ventrilo useless because TS exists?
Of course not.
I wouldn't worry about them adding an integrated voice option to Eve. They even offloaded it to a third party, so I doubt CCP "wasted" much precious dev time on it. ____________________________________________________________________

1) This is neither new content or an new feature, it is a new service. 2) I venture to guess that only about 5% of the community will ever use this "service" 3) This new "service" seems to be taking a front seat on the ride to Kali, I guess the things we have heard about for over 2 years will have to wait for the next big expansion. 4) The current overhead (client side) in the EVE client is so poorly managed that most people never actually experience lag that has anything to do with the servers, but instead are experiencing client side lag (CPU issues, video card issues, memory issues). Simply resizing the default chat window can cause most people to lag for a second. I can only imagine how a voice com will work - IT DOESNT MATTER WHAT SERVER IT IS GOING TO - if it is built into the EVE client, it will be screwed up period! 5) I am so glad that CCP is offering a service that hardly nobody has asked for, most people have been against, and doing so by looking over more important priorities that still have not been fixed. 6) I dont care about a fee, but $2 a month is stupid. I can rent a 100pesrson vent server for $10/month, so that works out to about $0.10 a month - THATS WHAT YOUR SERVICE IS WORTH CCP. Ten Cents per month. Good Luck paying the bills with that new income. 7)Vivox makes most fo their income by installing VOiP on dating websites. Everyone should boycott this Vivox service and send them crying back to the pits of the dating websites. I would expect a company like SOE or Blizzard to fall for Vivoxes slick sales pitch, but not CCP.

The Eve VoIP has some disadvantages and no advantages (from what I read) over Teamspeak and Ventrillo, while Teamspeak is cheaper than Ventrillo yet Ventrillo has better codecs which appeal to two different groups of people. ___________________
