Sure, I'll be the Devil's Advocate here.
This expansion has a lot of neat stuff. The new ships, lots of neat little fixes, a change of direction, plenty of balance changes, not to mention the extra glitter in the form of nebulae, stars, trails..
.. But all of it is indeed small stuff.
The big problems Eve has right now are with its core. Nullsec needs a revamp. Lowsec needs a revamp. Faction Warfare, Sov, Bounty Hunting, Smuggling, Mining and Industry.
These are the big things, and this expansion won't address any of them.
Crucible is buying time and goodwill. And it'll buy a lot of it.
But the fight isn't even close to over. |

It'll take a while for them to revamp all the core ideas of EVE, but some of this small stuff was rather necessary. I mean, really, they got rid of engine trails forever ago to be dickbags. They NEEDED to put those back in. |

Guys, this is only the first part and it's only natural that there's loads of low-handing fruit in this one. As far as I know ther'll still be two more early next year with what I assume will be FW fixes, another revisit to blasters (if necissary), Assault Frigs etc.

The changes to hybrids are just insulting. The devs seem to have forgotten FW exists. Nullsec revamp hasn't been mentioned in months, which is odd, since this is what this expansion was initially supposed to be all about. |

Whats "FW"?
Is that some sorta new module or something? Certainly you aren't talking about Faction Warfare. That boat sailed like two years ago. |

Geez, can't even wait til after the launch to call fail.
You know, criticism is good and all. But without context it doesn't do anything.
And they have done some fixes to true-sec, and they have introduced some balances to hybrids.
But as always that is not what you truly meant, and that I should read between the lines because explaining it is too mutch of a bother.
I guess this is also the fault of the SCM and their lack of communication to the devs. And that this somehow is Mittanis true goal in ruining EVE. And that the goons ultimately are to blame.

I have a feeling that this isn't the expansion they had initially planned. It's likely that they were going to go one direction up until late September, and now have done this in 2 months based on what happened over Monaclegate. |

Win.
Seeing as they did a 180 on their direction, and they probably did not have a full dev cycle for the "new" direction, it makes sense they'll go for the 80% gain for 20% effort things first.
Hopefully they are now settled in their new better direction and will start to work on those things not so easy to fix quickly and that may need a full dev cycle to do properly.
Also, people aren't just CPUs you plug in - it's understandable that some things will just be bling, because some of the developers are bling developers and can't just be plugged in to do core stuff.
Of course, time will tell whether they will take this much needed revamp end-out and fix the biggies that are remaining.
For now, I am happy with many small annoyances fixed, stemming the supercap tide, some new toys, fair lag and some new bling.
Now you just keep on heading in that direction CCP |

It depends on your perspective. From a content or balancing standpoint, this expansion is pretty thin imho, and I'm sure a lot of people would agree with that. However, if you were to ask me incidentally I say it's a win, because what it really represents is CCP sending a message to us that they are re-focused on making a great space game first and WiS as time allows. That fundamental shift in priorities and meaningful effort to 'turn the ship around' mid-establishments-stride is a pretty strong move, and I think it gives people a reason to get excited again for the future of eve. I'm willing to say that despite/given a 'thin' release and the time restraints of doing all this since the Fearless incident, CCPs done very well under the circumstances. I would expect something much more robust come summer, but for now I am happy with the direction of the game and look forward to many more years of good EvE gameplay.

what about some research into those issues before you start barking...
I am sorry that hybrid changes didnt make hybrids the best weapon system all around.
Faction warfare : i am not the one interested in it/speaking of research, but if you read through some interesting posts there, especially one from Hans you would know that CSM will have discussion regarding FW and that Hans is in contact with CSM about it.
NullSec revamp : well SC nerf will actually make some changes to null, sure sovereignty mechanics etc. is hardly my field of expertise and i am quite confident that current CSM actually knows whats what and have had some discussion on it, or will have.

While a lot of the stuff that is coming at the end of the month is indeed just fluff it is pretty damned good fluff and should thrill a great many people. If there is anyone out there that hasn't seen the new nebulae or V3 ship skins on Sisi they are going to be blown away.
Some of the more substantial changes that ccp promised were probably a bit too in depth to make it into this expansion but hopefully they are working on them and they are just a few months away rather than put off until next spring or summer. |

Parts are going to be a very nice patch. Some long overdue tweaks and some new shiny for the eyes.
At least two things are horrible.
- The shafting of small outfits that do PI in lowsec by introducing the new low sec pirate hobby target the player owned CO.
- The introduction of real space barbie with the new full avatar spinning interface. That being another desperate attempt to get us to spend $$ at the NeX store. CCP!! I will not be buying NeX clothing to wear to show off to random folk spinning my image in the worlds only on person per instance MMORPG UI.
All the major promises were dropped, FW, real SOV mechanics fixes, assualt frigate revamp, real hybrid fixing. And other long overdue areas were ignored - MINING!!! PLEASE CCP!!! Its been the same since I started in 2004!
But based on the reaction so far - WINNING - for CCP PR Fail - if really graded as an expansion.

I've never done FW but since everyone says it's broken I can only assume it is. If they fix FW, fix COSMOS, bring us the modular POS, complete V3 and allow ship reskinning I'll be happy with the next expansion.
Low sec and null sec... I'm assuming they're waiting on DUST for that. Since sov will probably be tied in with conquering planets, I'm not sure how you remake 0.0 without rolling out DUST first. |

It's an ok expansion, lots of graphical upgrades and four new ships and a few minor tweaks and annoyances fixed. Hybrids are still a bit iffy and will not be anyones first choice. As for the big things, nothing other than cap nerfs. Null and low-sec remain a big concern and we should begin to wonder if CCP has any real ideas on how to fix it. FW also still needs looking at although we've been promised something soon. PVE, mining and high-sec life remains pretty much the same. Overall there is no REAL new content except V3 graphics and some rebalancing.

to all the people saying hybrids didn't get fixed. this was explained to me a while back. they don't want to make hybrids the new FOTM for making any ships fit with them into pwnmobiles, so they are taking it one step at a time. with this you can at least track targets when they are in your range and with the changes to hulls you can keep up a little better. once they see how that pans out they can change other things accordingly. other than my initial feeling of being ripped off on the hybrid changes, I'm actually quite pleased with the changes, at least they didn't make people hate them this time around. so I would say win. |

It's a _very_ good bet that this expansion wasn't planned much before the end of summer. It "feels" like a plan B (plan A having been more WiS crap).
I'm not saying this'll be a "bad" expansion -- but there is SIGNIFICANTLY more to be excited about than compared to Incarna. Too bad my PC won't be able to handle all the new shiny in all its glory. |

IMO the game is in desparate need of offering something to do thats not yet another idiotic afkable activity. I tried playing a couple of weeks ago, got sentimental after a few months of just switching skills. After 5 days of roaming hours at a time I found basically noone undocked. Game full of blockade runners and generic docked alts is no fun so I went back to rift. Which sucks btw. But at least I can do things there that don't come down to jumping around empty space hoping for action that never happens, it has this thing called gameplay.
CCP started ruining the game way before Incarna. It's the unreasonable tendency to produce more and more content that doesn't require being undocked in a serious ship DOING something that's the source of real crisis imo, and I'm honestly not sure how does introducing a few new ships address this, there still won't be anyone undocked. I'd say if they actually went ahead with it and made real serious Incarna with player interaction it would be the equivalent of shooting a dying horse in the head, noone would undock again ever and it would be the end of eve online as we know it. This way at least there's some hope left.
Anyway eve is by far the most captivating game I ever played and I truly honestly hope ccp draws their heads out of their arses and makes it fun again as it used to be when I played whole afternoons and evenings and kept buying new ships to replace lost ones. |

Fail
Hybrid Fixes are underwhelming and suggest that the devs making these decisions do not really play or understand the game.
AF's were shelved yet again. EAFs, the least utilized ship class in the game, are apparently not on the radar.
The new BC's sounded interesting, maybe even great, at first. Then they broke them.
The Naga, and specifically the dev comments regarding the reasoning behind the design decisions, shows that the devs do not understand the problems Caldari pilots face, or why no one is actually using their combat ships other than the Drake.
An exciting expansion would be one that shakes things up in game, adding some excitement and variety, and one that showed that the folks at CCP have actually embraced a change in direction. I am seeing instead more of the same. More failed balancing, more dropped promises. |

This expansion is a baby step in the right direction, it contains a few of the things we've been promised for years, but past experience tells me that as soon as something foolish and shiny appears ccp will chase after it again, leaving us with even more half finished features. |

I say win.
For the longest time people wanted engine trails and new cynos back and there were threadnaughts about this on the old forums. They are fixed.
CCP fixed CQ so older machines could run it more smoothly with less artifacting.
Time dialation -
4 new ships to change the balance of eve and how we play it.
Hybrid fix - It's a bandage and not a total fix, still needs work but they at least put some time into it, the biggest and best change was the cap usage. But no one noticed that.
starbase fuel pellets. --- I dont know how many have pos towers but FREAKING WIN.
pi changes - I do pi, do you? Im going to be a rich man selling customs offices.
----
hybrids still need a little more work. I dont know why so many people are complaining, rails got a decent damage boost which makes caldari rail boats more viable. The better fitting requirements make it easier to fly gallente ships.
people need to stop fitting oversized AB onto their ships, of course it's going to go slow dumbass, a 100mn ab add the mass of that of your entire fitted ship..
Gallente need just a little bit more love, the speed boost across teh board was nice, but they need to have a natural bonus to mass addition from ab and mwd.
naga needs some more work
pos changes are win.

The chances of CCP getting the hybrid rebalance perfect in one shot is practically nill, so I'd much rather they gradually improve it till they are good, instead of going back and forth between overpowered and wimpy till they get it right. |

I think it's so/so. There's some good stuff and it's all a step in the right direction.
Faction Warfare could definitely use a buff, or some kind of its own special "Incursion" type events.
And personally, if I were CCP, I'd do away with SOV completely. If you want to 'own' a nullsec system, do so with numbers, and defending what you can hold onto, not with the ability to vomit up and defend a module. Buff the anoms etc, but remove the anchor bubbles, we have ships that do that instead of lazy people who prop a bunch on every gate every day.
Hybrids are a step in right direction.
It's a bit on the graphics heavy update-wise.
CCP had most likely planned to populate the NEX store this expansion and do a whole lot of other WiS garbage, but to stop the bleeding picked some of the most whined about things to keep the peace and goodwill flowing. I'm expecting the summer patch to be exploding with FiS goodness and fixes to the top 100 most complained about things leftover.
Walking in stations is stupid. CCP should just make EVE into 2 modules. Internet Spaceships, and Internet Space Barbies. If you want to fly in space, load that module, if you want to go play with other people at the Space Barbie glory hole, load that module. People have been playing EVE since 2003, and in almost 9 years of play, WiS has never, ever been a deal breaker.

what the hell are you talking about? you dont get why people keep whining about hybrids? try: 25% of the ships in the game are entirely useless in serious pvp scenarios, and now theyre just gonna look at fleet metrics for who knows how long. the changes, while 'beneficial', are entirely insignificant. we wont be seeing any changes in Gallente ship use. this is what everyone has been saying since the changes were announced: i.e. increasing blaster damage is unproductive if my ship keeps getting kited to death.
hybrids need huge, sweeping changes. like the once missiles, projectiles and lasers got. these changes are needed NOW, not in 6 months.
and it's beyond me why theyre calling a bunch of graphical updates an "expansion". try actually sticking to that original list and you may get a product than can be called an expansion. what we're getting on the 29th is fluff. |

Since it's still not out yet I'll reserve judgement.
That said, alot of the new t2 mods seem nice. Inventors will be both busy and happy.
Pos feul chance is a step in the right direction. Not everyone will be happy but then that never happens, so overall win.
New PCO's are an adventurous jump into the unkown which could be epic win or fall, only time will tell. I call win on it just for being unpredictable and rocking the boat.
New graphics for nebula's, scanning, new font will all be very welcome if subtle changed. +Win
Dram nerf is way overdue, only time will tell if th SC nerf does what it's supposed to.
Any improvement to hybrids is welcome. While this will probably not adress the issue 100% it's welcome anway.
Buff's to exploration, new sites, more affordable t2 rigs coming soon, and the anom buff will make alot of people happy and keep them busy. +Win
Amar and Mni will no doubt be anticipating their new Tier 3 BC's with much fervor. How much entheusiasm will great the Nag and Talos waits to be seen. Have to call fail on this. Inability to ballance them before release makes it seem like they were rushed a bit or they were the last 2 touched and not well finished ( even though they're both pretty sweet looking ).
Anyone who flies Galente will appreciate the speed and inertia buff. How big an effect this has will remain to be seen but it's a step in the right direction. + Win
CCP needs to wake up to to fact that the Nationalism aspect of FW burned itself out 2 years ago. Until it becomes Good vs Evil, White Hats vs Black it just doesn't have any relevance. Other than a change like that eveyting else is just a bandaid.
Null Sec. A previous dev blob asked for input into all aspects of null. Good start but unless CCP is truely prepared to rock the boat and take some serious risks it's not going to work. No local without sov, no mobile bubbles without sov, serious bonus's to manufacturing in null. There has to be real risk with genuine rewards. And, the players need to take some of the blame. CCP makes the sandbox but it's the player base that have taken a dump in it.
Being Galente you need a healthy amount of optimism to undock but either way I'm looking forward to all the new stuff so Win and tyvm.

definit WIN... dont realy get what some of the haters in here are hurfblurfing about....

- Hybrid Rebalance - it happend so stop whining, no broken promises there... they promised to reiterate after seeing it on the live server, small steps are good mkay :P
- Supercap Rebalance - might very well shake up the way huge wars are fought in 0.0
- Time dilation - possibly a big step in the fight against lag, could turn out to be huge win or total fail...but a bold step nevertheless
- POS Fuel changes
- 4 New Ships with unique abilities
- Anomaly Rebalance
- New T2 Modules
- New Captains Quarters - ok well not realy looking forward to this...but a feature nevertheless...
- Player owned customs offices
And this list doesnt even include tiny changes like drones trying to return on disconnect, the combined warp jump button they are introducing, the ingame fitting tool finaly showing dps...
For me this is certainly a HUGE step in the right direction. And I am looking foward to one of the most fun expansions since a long long time... |

Did you really think I would say something like that without being able to back it up? Look at the pacing of the questions... it could very easily be interpreted that he was talking about WiS in that quote. That "right now we're doing FiS in this expansion, but as soon as I can get away with it, I want to do an apocrypha-sized WiS expansion." I hope I'm wrong, but I somehow doubt it. Hilmar apparently hates EVE. He seems to wish he was working on pretty much any other game.
Also, as to the OP: The point of this expansion isn't to "fix" EVE. It's to stop EVE from hemorrhaging customers, and maybe win a couple back. It may or may not succeed at that. But OP is right. EVE will not really recover until a) nullsec is fixed and b) CCP convinces people that nullsec is fixed. Since Grayscale is in charge (he admitted in a devblog thread that he does not take feedback, nor does he even bother reading it) nullsec will probably never be truly fixed. |

This. NPC null, low, wh space and even some parts of highsec are "owned." Sov mechanics just allow someone to plant flags all over the place and only bother to come back if someone else tries to yank it out. |

Ofc as many people said, its all small stuff. But small stuff is actually what matters the most.
And we have to note that this change of directions happened like a couple of month ago. You cannot expect them to deliver full revamps of null sec and low sec in such a short time. But what they did in these few month is very very good stuff. And if they continue like this, hopefully EVE will become a better game. For Love. For Peace. For Honor.

Exactly.
Anything you might need to know about CCP's "new direction" can been observed by looking at the new Naga.
The reason CCP ditched the missile armament that they initially (and correctly, seeing as how it is supposed to be a Caldari ship and not a second Gallente BC) employed is that Torpedos and Cruise missiles have serious issues in PvP (which is, of course, why so few use Caldari BS's). CCP could easily correct these issues on the Naga, using bonuses, but they cannot do so without highlighting the problems with these missiles and Caldari BS's in general.
Rather than FIXING the problem, as a new direction might suggest, CCP has decided to continue their traditional half-assed approach. Which is exactly what they told us they would no longer do. |
