Last night game was shocking!!!!! You beat a bunch of lower league players by fitness alone. If you keep playing long ball football, you will get nowhere. You have 3 of the best midfielders in the world, but hey spent most of the game with a sore neck from watching the ball being launched over thier heads to that lump of timber you call a striker.
England have not put in a performance of any noteworthy mention for ages. Can I ask, Truthfully, when was the last game you thought "OMG, what a performance by us!!!" Apart from the odd friendly against minnows I cannot remember recently sitting watching and thinking "Holy cr*p, these guys are awesome!!" -----------------------------------------------

England played one of their worst games sofar, I hope that team is put out of their misery in the 2nd round.
Since I'm Dutch, go Oranje go, although the team is young and lacks major tournament experience so I wouldn't be surprised if they botch up today against Argentina.

You are right mate, that was the last time, and that was not last month, that was years ago. It has gotten to the stage that you have "forgotten" how to play good football.
You do have potentially one of the best teams, but there is a huge difference between potential and actual. Your style of play is negative and boring, you only have 1 real match winner up front(Owen is not fit) and your midfield have lost the ability to pass the ball more than 3 times without "punting" it up the park.
Couple this with the fact that you have taken a 17 year old with ZERO real experience, and you have to start asking serious questions about the people you have in charge.
In Gerrard and Lampard you have 2 guys who should be controlling every game they play in for large parts and controlling the pace of the game. So far in 2 games against no hopers they have been indifferent, boardering on inept. I really think that none of the big guns will have seen anything to be afraid of so far. -----------------------------------------------

Trade England now for Germany in 1990, or Italy in 1982 right up till the second round, or Germany in 1974, or England in 1966, or Brazil in 2002, and I'd still agree with you.
Oh, wait. All those teams went on to win the damn thing. What am I supposed to be worried about? ________________________________________________

Argentina are looking very scary. In fact, the last time I remember a team looking this awesome was Brazil in 1982.
They scored a sixth goal even as I speak. They'll be favourites to win it by now. ________________________________________________

Edited by: Luc Boye on 16/06/2006 15:21:27 I'd still take Crouch out, and play with Owen and Rooney, why is that guy playing in Englands national team baffles me tbh. Sure he did goal, but not so thx to his skill or anything, but just because Beckham managed to hit his head with great pass. Anybody's head would do the job there, hell, I am sure if I was standing there it would be goal anyway.
Crouch is so clumsy he makes offensive foul 90% of times ball comes close to him.
At least Owen is trying to be creative.

Clearly, I'm not going to win a penny. :( Czechs will win this WC methinks, thanks to the great mulleted one. (Nedved)

Well I am the eternal optimist when it comes to England and I truly beleive that playing Sweden this coming Tuesday will do wonders for our game.
Without the pressure being there of having to qualify for the next round we should be able to relax and play good flowing football, we will be able to give rooney (and walcott?) a good run out. I would also like to see lennon on the pitch from the start with owen and rooney up front.

if you can see past the gangly legs and extreme height, peter crouch is infact a very composed player, owen was crap full stop, neevr came looking for the ball at all, but crouch came time and again to find the ball from midfeild, the reason we were so poor tacticaly was beckham, all he wanted to do was pump balls over the top of their defence, it only worked 1 time when crouch got to it, now look at the big picture, height wise t&t had us beat in their defending yet our captain still thought it wise to launch the big balls over the top
keep crouch in, play him with rooney and drop beckham for lenon and then we will have ourselves a decent side, beckham has been over rated for a long time now

Experience is overrated.. heck, half the german team is fresh and without experience in such tournaments and it does pretty well so far. Prime example for this is Odonkor

I only hope for England it's like the Rugby World Cup was - we peaked the autumn before, played rubbish throughout the tournament but still won it. The only problem is England FC don't have Johhny Wilkinson .

I don't think you can argue that Crouch is rubbish - his distribution is excellent and he's scored a hatful of goals for England recently. Owen needs a full season in the Premier**** to get back his sharpness. He looks distinctly average at the moment. With any luck Roonaldo coming back will enable us to play "one in the hole", which will help Owen enormously. But if I had to choose, I'd bench Owen and keep Crouch in there. I'd also play a holding midfielder and bench lampard too.

Argies are the new outright 4-1 favourites for the World Cup.
England are indeed rubbish and Crouch is a mere stop-gap until Owen gets fit.
But Owen showed all the signs of getting back to his best in last match vs Trinidad - not least was the couple of times he was out there on the right wing actually winning the ball, beating defenders, putting in crosses - he won a hopeless ball on the goal-line, turned his man and set up a golden opportunity for Lampard in an instant.
Netherlands - you better beat Argentina and win your group because Rooney & Owne are going to make your dodgy defence look silly in the quarter-finals!

And Portugal join the second-round party .. also without looking all that impressive. Not many teams have looked all that good so far - Spain and Argentina come to mind - but the important thing is getting into the knockout stages. THEN you can worry about actually being good enough to win the thing. ________________________________________________

indeed. interesting game.
...but yes, portugal's game wasn't THAT great. Deco's goal from the "middle of the street" (like we like to call here in portugal) was very good tho. -------

Edited by: Mather Maelstrom on 17/06/2006 21:33:53 Nice job USA and Ghana! To bad the USA didn't win it would have made things a lot more interesting. If the USA would have won; both they, Ghana, Italy and the Czech Republic could have gone to the next round. I think I'll be pro Ghana in the duel between the US and Ghana. It would be nice to see an African country to go to the next round.

actually it was an own goal
tho are guy was right there he just decided to let it go in on it's own rather then risk screwing it up.
and yes it was 9 players and we actually scored before it was called back --------------- RIP - Smoske, My Friend

or win it by penalties

Hope Ghana do well. Tbh I would love to see at least one representative from each confederation in the second round. It is getting a bit boring with SA and Europe teams all the time.
