Today on test I noticed the option to lock windows in place when pinned has been removed.
It used to exist under the ESC | General Settings | Windows section
Can this feature be put back in? |

This was removed on purpose. The feature was becoming increasingly hard to maintain due to technical reasons, and given the fact that very few people even knew of it's existence, we decided to remove it. |

This. Wasn't this even the default functionality when pinning was added 6 years ago? I always wondered why it changed.
Only in EVE does "pinning" no longer mean "to hold in place". WTH

So there's no option at all to keep windows where you want them? I can't be the only person who discovered this option because of the annoying accidental window moving. Shouldn't the whole point of pinning windows keep them locked anyway?
I pin windows to make them transparent and to lock them in place. |

Why even have a button to pin a window, if all it does is make it a bit more transparent?
Just set transparency on all the windows and remove the pin button.
Then remove the option to minimize a window, because who really does that?
Nobody stacks them either, and who in their right mind would CLOSE a window?
Why do we even need windows, just overlay some text at the bottom of the screen, like an old-school MUD. Your stuff goes here. |

Everyone I know in fact sets the lock when pinned so we dont accidently drag pinned windows around, also it is the only way we have been able to historically keep your fail windows designers from hosing us with windows that constantly switch positions and unstack after patches.

What we need is two options (in the window itself):
PIN - make it transparent (the little circle w/ dot) LOCK - make it locked in position relative to the nearest 2 screen edges (a lock icon)
So there would be 4 little buttons in the upper right corner of any UI window (lock, pin, minimize, close). |

If anyone didn't complain about this before, it is probably because they thought that windows *not* locking when pinning was a "meh :CCP:"-bug and went on to complain about something more important.
Why windows didn't lock when pinned by default, I don't know. But pretty please don't remove this feature, it is *very* useful! Certified ISK Sink EST 2007 |

Locking windows while pinned is the only way to make the million windows you have to deal with bearable. Just how technically challenging it is to have all the windows just inherit from a window class with the lock functionality (you are using inheritance for the common window behaviour, right? Then again just about every window behaving differently for example when it has focus and you press enter speaks otherwise...)? |

Then you'd damn well better fix your 'Pin Window' thing.
And few people even knew of it's existence because everybody just rightly assumed CCP was incompetent when it came to 'Pin Window' not working, and learned to deal with it.

For the love of god please put this back in. Nothing pisses me off more than a the target selection window or a chat box or something getting moved around in the middle of a PvP fight because eve decided to interpret me pressing my mic button (thumb button on my Logitech G5) as a click-and-drag on a window. I've only discovered it recently and it made Eve's UI about 90% more bearable.
Come to think of it, why the hell was this not turned on by default? "Pinned" windows imply that they don't move around, not that they just turn transparent.
Actually, I'd rather if the "pinned" button was split into two buttons, a "pinned" and a "transparent" button, so I don't HAVE to make my pinned windows transparent (and visa versa). |

I just can hope this is a bad drunken joke. Maybe you have overworked ? CCP is unable to implement simpliest things. Like settting to hide signatures. So they sweep it under a rug . Children do that in their pre-shool years, CCP does it being adults. Probably because it is fearless enough. |

If 'pinned' doesn't mean imobilized, what does it mean then? If someone cloaks and you said "man that guy just pinned" people would rightly tazer your balls to make sure you don't procreate.
I can't wait to start accidently dragging my windows around mid fight when in a hurry to click stuff. hooray... Could 'make window not move' be just the default (since that what it means) activity to 'pin' a window? And if not, change the name of the function to "Make Transparent" so that at least it will do what it says its doing. :| |

Lets give the UI department some more time and change to finish their product...
I bet they had to take plenty of short cuts to make the new font usable before the expansion launch and I believe that this is one of those short cuts - even it seems to be little difficult to admit that again .) There was only so much they could do in the given time.
Anyway - In the end I'm sure that they are not happy with the end product either and if CCP keeps loving us after the expansion also, we should see few finishing touch UI updates soonish (without TM). I hope this gets fixed by then also.

Ok, the feature does not work all the time, sometimes windows would jump all over the place regardless of being pinned down or not. But the majority of the time it does work as intended: keeping the windows and tabs (stacked or not) in place, nailed down on the spot, not accidentally movable, glued, taped, plastered, PINNED DOWN ! And why do I use that feature would you ask? For the same reason I lock modules on the HUD: to avoid mishaps when doing things in haste when the need arises. When you want to close or minimize a window you don't want it to move, you want it to close or minimize.
I mean who would have thought that in EvE, sometimes you have to go from happily sailing through silent and peaceful space to frantically activating modules and closing/minimising windows just to save your ship? In my EvE?!? Never...... Here I used to have a sig of our old Camper in space. Now it is disregarded as being the wrong format. Looking out the window I see one thing: Nothing wrong with the format of our Camper! Silly CCP......

Come on CCP, anyone that pins a window actually wants just that. As has been said before, we just accepted long ago that pin window didn't mean what it said and we needed to lock it as well. That is a fact.

The only reason people might not use this option is because it is set to off by default. Setting it to off by default is silly and the first think I do on any Eve client is set it on. I also tell everyone I fly with about this option and most people either know about it or are very happy to be told about it.
Don't 'fix' this by removing the option and forcing pinned windows to not be pinned at all. By all means remove the option, but set the windows to be unmovable permanently. |

Quite frankly, the fact that window locking keeps breaking, with every new release and patch, is a bug - and this rather essential gameplay feature needs to be permanently fixed, not removed.
GUI programming isn't rocket science or brain surgery. Locking window positions is not something which should be "increasingly hard to maintain". This is basic core level stuff that you code once and should never need to touch again.
Sorry to be so critical, but debugging and fixing these sorts of problems is a large part of what I do in my RL profession. It just isn't that difficult. |

Another +1 to the "pin should, you know pin" sentiment. I've never understood why there was even a choice to have pinning not lock the window in place. It's way too easy, especially in a hot fight, to accidentally move a window or worse, dock it to another, thereby totally hosing your UI at a critical moment.

But it's a nice feature to have. I don't know how you wrote it but why don't you just make windowID's remember relative locations to the origin? Or explain how it can be so difficult to maintain since I seem to be missing something. |

Surely you cannot be serious. I have used this feature almost since it was introduced and I have never come across anyone who didn't know about it (compared to, for example, the target origin widget that lets you move your locked targets around). Any time I had to redo my settings (reset cache or new install for example) I moaned about the pin button not locking windows by default. And every time people replied "yeah, I hate that too". Not once did anyone say "what are you talking about?"
This is exactly the opposite of the correct change. The change you should make is to fix the pin button lock to windows by default.
edit: In fact, as has been suggested many times including before the OP here, "pin" and "make transparent" need to be separate. I don't pin my chat windows because pinning them tends to make them unreadable, but I would love to be able to lock them in place because I move them around by accident all the zarking time. |

Pinning when you click that button to where the windows don't move needs fixing. Not the option in your esc-settings.
I'm glad you're finding legacy code to get rid of. When you do eventually get it back into EVE, I hope that you're able to introduce it properly.

Please reimplement this functionality after the Crucible release as soon as possible. The whole pinning icon doesn't make any sense without having the option to actually pin it down... You should also make it default ON when you're already there fiddling with the code. I'm quite sure if you gathered some metrics from the client settings with station sitting alts excluded you would see how many people have the pinning setting on... in fact this is one of the 4 things I immediately change after reinstalling a client.

Preferably as a client update immediately after the main patch. To be honest, I get very annoyed after each patch when I have to wrestle with yet another UI f***-up. I said it before - UI development is not rocket science, so please act accordingly.

There is a serious bug with this feature removal:
Previously pinned, not closable chat (local, alliance, corp) windows will now stay unmovable unless you dock or do something which should not affect positioning of windows.
With closable chat windows you can just close and reopen them and you're fine.
That was before last patch so sorry if that issue is already solved, if not it will mean that you have to clear the cache after 29.11 to be able to move chat windows.
BTW: Would it be possible to actually have the capabilities to close corp / alliance / local / incursion channels ? |

Obviously, we jumped the gun on this one, we're sorry and we'll fix it. I would although like to point out that we don't remove features like this just because we're evil but rather in an attempt to simplify code and user experience. If we manage to identify and remove a feature that nobody uses, that means simpler code, simpler user experience, fewer bugs and more time to implement new and cool stuff. In this case, we obviously misdiagnosed. Also, we are actually quite evil coming to think of it.
It's no secret that our window system is quite arcane and we would really like to pull it further into the 21st century. Features like pinning, collapsing and stacking is something that you won't find in many modern GUI systems, but obviously we can't go ahead and remove stuff without providing better means of doing the things that you need to do. By looking at the root of problems, it is rather often possible to find a simpler, more elegant solution to problems that doesn't require users to dig up a setting in the system menu.
In the case of locking windows when pinned, I take it that the biggest reason for the usage relates to lightning fast mouse maneuvering and button pressing going wrong and the usual suspects being the overview, selected item and drone windows, and probably any other combat related window. I would be surprised if many people lock their fitting window (or do they?). Maybe the solution could be as simple as making windows, that have been snapped to a screen edge, or other windows, harder to accidentally move, so that the window wouldn't start moving unless you had dragged it, say 5-10 pixels? Maybe the windows in question shouldn't be windows at all, but rather fixed to the right hand side of the screen (similar to the the ship HUD)?
For pinning (just the transparency change bit) we might be able to remove that option altogether, make the active window background fade in (look like an unpinned window) and all other windows fade out (look like pinned windows). I have actually played around with this a bit and it reduces the visual noise of the UI quite a bit, drawing the attention of your eyes to the active window while keeping other windows well readable and the 3d scene visible, so it looks promising.
Collapsing windows has always seemed like a weird little thing to me, and for some reason it always reminds me of Windows 3.11, which is less than great. Do people use this feature? I know that some people use TAB to collapse/expand all windows, but wouldn't it make more sense to minimize/maximize all windows instead, while allowing you to exclude some windows (such as the overview)?
What about features like SHIFT-dragging windows to drag an entire snap-group of windows ... is this the first time you ever heard of this or is it a keeper?
Are there other weird little things in the window system that nobody uses that we could probably axe without much rage?
All feedback and thoughts about these thoughts and how we could improve and streamline our window system, without ruining EVE, would be greatly appreciated. Sadly, we can't improve things without changing them and people (including me) hate it when the UI they've grown used to changes, but given that the changes are actually good, the hatred quickly wears off. The more vocal you are, the less likely we are to screw up like this again! |

Personally I have grown to like the current system, but I digress.
I like to be able to make a window transparent, but I'd also like to lock none transparent windows. So maybe the options should be separated. I. E. Pinning means exactly that, while the old pinning option would become transparency.
Please don't force snapping on us, I remove that option straight away. I basically move and make changes to windows and leave them.
Just more clarity to the menu system would be a great start, with more options rather than less.

Many thanks for listening.
It is a keeper. It behaves quite funny though, pairing stacked windows with other entirely unrelated ones (that happen to be close to the first one) and screwing up one's miserly orderly UI disposition preferences. Although behaviour is a difficult thing to change, and software behaviour has gotten more diffcult to control than human behaviour.

The thing about making everything customizable is that it makes the code, windows and system menu more complex to work with, for users and developers alike. This is of course an eternal tug of war between simplicity and customizability. If everything is customizable, programmers and designers will have to account for all combinations of options whenever they change anything, so the complexity obviously grows exponentially, the end result being that more time is spent on maintenance, and less time on improvement. Of course I'm not saying that you shouldn't be able to modify anything, but we do need to make a solid case before adding more stuff to the system menu. |

And yeah, maybe I run in with the fringe logic too, but I notice you're making erratic decisions which shake up the community in ways that do not cater to the betterment of the whole.
Regrets are on you, and perhaps if you actually had a working relationship with the community, CCP, then you could introduce some of our ideas at your next feature-programming meeting. I think we all deserve a supporting voice from you CCP, if we first of all support you every month in our own ways. Mistakes like this can be avoided, and testing could run much smoother with actual player input. Luckily this fringe of communication got noticed early enough, before the entire situation could be overlooked. |

Never been a fan of transparent windows, they just make seeing the window contents difficult as is seeing anything under them... I know many people that don't like pinning their windows at all because of the transparency, so an option on this one would be much needed. |

It says I can only quote 5 times in a single post, so blame your forum for some confusion below.
CCP Optimal wrote:Features like pinning, collapsing and stacking is something that you won't find in many modern GUI systems, but obviously we can't go ahead and remove stuff without providing better means of doing the things that you need to do. By looking at the root of problems, it is rather often possible to find a simpler, more elegant solution to problems that doesn't require users to dig up a setting in the system menu. I think the root of the problem here is that EVE's GUI is not strictly a "windowing system" (like an OS), but a hybrid of a windowing system and a UI. And it uses windows to implement both kinds of interfaces.
When looking at this forum, say, do you really expect to be able to click on the avatar picture on the left and drag & drop it around to somewhere else? No. It's part of the UI, not a window. And EVE does not provide this ability of a UI - it makes everything a window, and we have to live with those restrictions.
The ability to "stick" a window blurs that distinction. I don't even much care about the transparency (that's nice, but not important). I care about certain elements of my UI staying where they are. The overview, target selection, etc. They are not conceptually "movable objects" all the time - the only time I want to move them is necessary when configuring my UI, but not in "normal use".
Other windows - the fitting window, market, etc. - are conceptually "windows": Things that pop up, that I move around, and that I close when I don't need them.
Quote:In the case of locking windows when pinned, I take it that the biggest reason for the usage relates to lightning fast mouse maneuvering and button pressing going wrong and the usual suspects being the overview, selected item and drone windows, and probably any other combat related window. For pinning (just the transparency change bit) we might be able to remove that option altogether, make the active window background fade in (look like an unpinned window) and all other windows fade out (look like pinned windows). I also pin local, but mainly because it consumes so much space that I'd rather have it more transparent.
To the HUD question: Yes. Except you want to make a "configuration mode" where you can drag those around and place them wherever you want, and when you leave "configuration mode" they stick there. This should also apply to the HUD, locked targets, and the system / route information.
To the transparency question: Sounds ok. I can see some uses of having more windows "readable" at the same time (when transferring stuff from one to the other; say, market / orders, or for chat windows which you follow without typing in them), but that should still be workable.
Quote:Collapsing windows has always seemed like a weird little thing to me, and for some reason it always reminds me of Windows 3.11, which is less than great. Do people use this feature? Yes, regularly and rather extensively:
- I always have a Peoples & Places window open, collapsed, at the top of my screen. The "search box" and "make bookmark" buttons are too useful to have at hand, but the whole window consumes too much space to have open all the time.
- I regularly collapse / uncollapse the overview because that's the most reliable method to fix any display bugs in it, and there are plenty of those. I.e. please fix the overview first before removing that feature. ;-)
- I regularly collapse my current "working window" to be able to see something (e.g. we're on a roam and I'm handling my market orders while flying around, I "collapse" it when the scout reports hostiles incoming). I think this use can be replaced by minimizing the window, but collapsing is easier to hit than the pretty minor "minimize" icon that makes it easy to accidentally close the window at the same time.
Quote:- I know that some people use TAB to collapse/expand all windows, but wouldn't it make more sense to minimize/maximize all windows instead, while allowing you to exclude some windows (such as the overview)?
What about features like SHIFT-dragging windows to drag an entire snap-group of windows ... is this the first time you ever heard of this or is it a keeper? Sure to the TAB question.
About shift-drag: I don't regularly use it, but I do use it. It's mostly the UI thing from above again: I have arranged a group of windows as my UI element of choice, and I just need to move them (or resize them) together a bit. Say, making the "selected item / overview / drones" triplet on the right a bit wider, or moving it down a bit more.
Quote:All feedback and thoughts about these thoughts and how we could improve and streamline our window system, without ruining EVE, would be greatly appreciated. Oh, pet peeve time? :-) One recurring problem is the way stacked windows are handled. This is especially important for chat windows. When you have "too many" windows in a stack at once, it's almost impossible to read the channel names, and with more they're even replaced with a white triangle, making it impossible to follow. The solution so far is to have multiple chat windows at once, which is suboptimal.
The main proposed solution so far has been multiple tab rows on the top to fit more tabs in the same space. Another option would be to have the tabs to the left (or right) of the window to make more use of widescreen displays. Finally, some more IRC client functionality (display of channels with activity, key to cycle through "active channels", shortcuts to go to specific channels, etc.) would be really useful.
But in general, the chat window concept needs some work. |

Some one kick the Web team Another long post was eaten.
Thanks for the long and informative post.
Mininization to the bottom of the screen is a great feature I use holding mission objective windows, messages, and market when i am in the middle of something.
The problem is that min windows do not link back to there parent command. So you get more actions like failed to jump failed to jump becouse you are cloaked when accessing the UI. Clicking the market button on the quick action bar should open up the minimzed market window you left open for example.
Usability needs to be addressed more. add more things like engine trailes, targeting overlays, and miss graphics please so there is more info in the tactical interface.
Map view needs to be something besides F10 just to help new players. Also the circle UI does not get mentioned in the NPE. I did not realize it existed for over a year in a half lol.

Keep the pinning. I would say that the edge delayed drag wouldn't be as effective as you'd imagine.
This is largely because many players have their chat windows taking up a large portion of the screen. Making the delayed drag an edge only option would mean that anything that is elsewhere is still the most prone to being dragged and such..
A great step would perhaps be to make only the title and bottom bars of windows the only portions of windows that would allow dragging and shrinking. This would HUGELY reduce the frustration involved with the 'Selected Item' and overview windows.
I would not remove any of the current features, but maybe streamlining is a good idea.
Perhaps, anything pinned has a good drag delay rather than being totally pinned and immobile. Say, a 1.5-2 second hold-click before the item moves.
One thing I would personally love to see is that when collapsing windows that are currently snapped in proximity to another window, snap to their bottom edge or top edge, depending on their screen placement. That, and dragging any windows that are snapped to its top edge, down with it.
As for the background fade, please no. |

Coming from unix background I have always been using window shading (collapsing them to just the tittle bar) and find it very useful. This way the window location stays where you left it and it's easier to come back to than hunting some obscure minimized window bars mixed in the chat stack at the same location.
When I use tab myself I want everything gone from the screen so that I can manually pilot or position probes without any windows taking up the screen, and even leaving the overview would leave a sizeable chunk of screen estate unusable as an overview showing alliance, corp tags, type, name, speed, distance takes lot of space. Such exclusion list needs to definitely be user configurable.
For the tab behavior I would very much like it to be changed so that it has zero memory on what it's doing so that: 1) if any unshaded windows shade them all 2) if no unshaded windows unshade them all. Currently for example when using it while probing and shading everything via tab, then unshading just the scanner window manually and then pressing tab first shades the scanner window back (good so far) but pressing it again unshades just the scanner window, not all windows...

My view is that you ought to stick to standards more. I suspect that 90% of the folks that lock windows do so because for some reason, you allow people to move windows by dragging their backgrounds. This is not "normal" behavior, and is annoying.
The only time I use the tab key to collapse all windows is when the overview is bugged and I want a quick way to refresh it. This has been mostly fixed recently.
My #1 windowing UI complaint is that you guys don't make the enter key always map to OK in dialogs. This is especially visible in the industry UI, where after picking a manufacturing location, enter will re-pick the location, rather than hit the OK button. You appear to have enter activating the focused control, not the default button for a dialog, and it is annoying. CSM 6 Alternate Delegate @two_step_eve on Twitter My Blog What does CSM 6 do? |

Never even heard about that shift thing, as there isn't any documentation available on the UI for players much less a tutorial on it's features...
Can't think of anything to axe but can think of one simple thing that is pissing me off: the default window behavior when enter is pressed on a window that has focus:
1) the DT notifications get it right and close with enter, good 2) The plex messages I have seen maybe thousand times (and read maybe half of the text ever) don't close with enter, you have to mouse click on the close button... always instinctively press enter first. 3) The mess that is the install job dialog in science and industry:
The default action on the install job dialog seems to depend on from where did you start the job (hangar/assets/s&i window blueprint list) and also from what you did last on the dialog, for example selecting a decryptor for invention job makes enter no longer submit the form and get a quote. Sometimes enter starts going to the select installation screen, sometimes popping out the select decryptor field...
Same failures are in the select installation dialog; if you for example select the public/corp/alliance installation filter enter no longer submits but instead pops up that selection box. (also why don't you have sane selections on the range filter, like "installations this job can be installed on" by default as manufacturing on a tower remotely necessitates the usage of "region" filter).
The whole mess screams to me that you don't have a sane class structure going on with the windows where there is a basic window class, a class for pop ups etc that all the windows inherit from, such a structure makes it trivial to maintain window locking and good defaults on what happens with enter so all pop ups behave the same for example. |

Reading the replies that came when I typed my walls of text the idea of having separate customizable hud and windows seems quite logical and sane way to go with it, thus you would have a special mode to configure the hud, including placing the cap/hp readout where ever you wanted it, placing the module grid where you want (independent of the cap readout) the overview, selected item, drone window and fleet window lite (which only shows last few broadcasts and the broadcast buttons, really dislike the decision to pair the buttons and broadcast history with the fleet window). All the HUD elements should be unmovable outside of this special mode.
Many people don't even seem to know that you can move the target bar and even get it vertical if you want to as it's all hidden away on a really hard-to-see little cross that is often bellow windows. |

My #1 windowing UI complaint is that you guys don't make the enter key always map to OK in dialogs. This is especially visible in the industry UI, where after picking a manufacturing location, enter will re-pick the location, rather than hit the OK button. This is a great point. Would most people agree that reducing the draggable area for a window to the window header would eliminate the need for locking? I assume the same would be done for collapsing as it doesn't make a great deal of sense that double clicking the window directly collapses it and probably causes a lot of accidents.
We strive to have ENTER work as confirm for all dialogs. If some of them fail to follow that pattern, I would call that a defect. |

Pretty much got it in one here, although I dont agree about the snapped to other windows bit, sometimes things have a little seperation like so...

Thats on a rather small window res but as you can see the selected item window is seperate (although still tied to the side of the screen. At times, on larger res settings you might have something pinned neared the middle (like a watch list, scanner drone window etc which are completely seperate but still wish to have pinned.
At present the modular nature of the overview allows for a variety of different settings to suit the myriad roles you may end up in in eve, from mining ops, solo pvp, trading and of course larger scale fleet ops that require many more windows (intel channels, watch lists, fleet window blah blah blah... being able to treat each element seperately is fantastic allowing you to scale back when you dont need so much clutter.
I remember when the overview, selected and drone bay were all forcibly grouped on the left and it could be frustrating at times (althogh admittedly it was also rather buggy at times too)! Actually, no that isn't a bad idea. That way, when you do finally update the game - say this would've been a decision made in 2007 - years spent coding the new UI would pay off. So lets say you start today. No other dramatic updates for a couple years. People would be that much more appreciative of your hard work.
But it isn't as profitable when you risk losing players, now is it? C'mon, if anything I've learned from EVE is that time IS money...
But, honestly, I've heard time and time again, forum after forum, that when it comes to changing the UI or enabling efficient customization/OS compatibility it will take more than an arm and a leg to apply such a change. Don't get me wrong, I think your jobs are great adding new features and all but... i wouldn't imagine a small team working on a UI overhaul, if you didn't have to. I'd doubt the impossibility if a practical assessment of the potential workload can't be made. I've seen freelancers do lots with no money. All they needed was a plan, and just a pinch of ambition.
What I'm saying is if YOU, CCP Programmers & Staff, wanted to change things you could. You already have an income source, and I've seen people with less at least attempt at doing more. But I assume the reality of that is just too much for me to understand? Don't worry, I do. I think you're doing an excellent job, and you've got your hands Full with the upcoming expansion. Please, do carry on. |

No, I think one of the main reasons for windows flying all over the screen is over-zealous camera spinning, so you left-click randomly and launch your mouse across the desk to get a quick 360 around you, the problem arises where you accidently snag a window, with it reduced to headers, you're less likely to snag one, but the chance is still there. A proper pinning tool, would stop this all together.
Edit: Double clicking the header by accident and collapsing the 'Selected Item' window annoys the jesus-juice out of me, especially when you're trying to make a quick get away or lock up a target. |

Reducing the area which can move the window would help and makes perfect sense when looking at other common windowing systems; none of them have similar functionality as eve does where you can drag window around by dragging the window contents. But in addition to this I would prefer to have lockable windows as there is zero need to reposition the "combat ui" once it's been set up.
For the enter thing start with plex popups and work your way to the mess that is S&I windows, plenty of stuff to do there regards what happens with enter. |

I think the only time I actively used something else than the header for dragging was when I had a window jump around and actually move out of the interactive area, leaving only the bottom and right part of the window visible. The last time this happened (to a chat window which couldn't be dragged with anything visible), I used another window to snap to the chat window and then shift-drag to make the original window fully visible again. |

There are several annoying things with the UI imo.
A 'pinned' window doesn't modify its tabs behavior, and that's a pain. When I 'pin' a windows, I'd like to have tabs inside tabbed as well, so that if i click-drag accidentaly on the tab label it doesn't move. Especially annoying when you have multiple channel tabs on screen.
Resizing a window is limited by your anchor/minimal size code, I'd like to size windows the way I want, even if too small. Drone Bay, Cargo, Fleet etc have weird settings with minimal size. With point #1 above, when pinned they should not be resizable. In addition, some tables in window do not memorize their columns width, or adjust width automatically (like cargo bay) even when it's not desired.
In fact, i'd like to have a option to really "freeze" up UI to be sure widgets cannot be affected in any way except for few, standard, and well-explained stuff (minimize, close commands for example.)
There are several 'little things' (all things equal) which could add some awesomeness to in-space view : make the solarsystem and star maps an overlay of the in-space view, instead of or in addition of the actual modal view. This layer could require a hotkay pressed to interact with, but it should first mirror the map to the view. So, with stargates aligned to their actual destination, with additional stars in space to mark neighbor systems, one could see the map overlay (with routes, or security system color, or "ennemy spotted" broadcasts, cynos, ships destroyed in the last hour, etc.)
I didn't verify on Sisi yet, with new jump drive effect, does the effect end with the distant ray points to the actual jump destination ? If yes, awesome, if not, it is need.
This could add emergent intel gameplay. You see a capital jumping out, with the overlay with current open cyno you could guess its destination. |

Just in case it helps, an overview of my screen setup.
In space, I pin the Selected Object window, the Overview window, Chat (stacked) windows, Fleet window, Drone window, D-scanner and Cargo windows (when looting wrecks, you don't want your Cargo window changing locations and it sometimes does this on Sisi now).
I do NOT snap windows all the way to the edge of the screen however, I leave a "gutter" around the edge of the screen, this is so brackets for things behind you, etc can be seen at the edge of the screen and not obscured by the windows.
In the station, the Selected Object, Overview, Drone, and D-scanner aren't available BUT I still keep the remaining pinned windows pinned in place, plus I stack (but not pin) the Items, Ships, and People/Places window - in the same location that wreck windows pop up when looting.
In the station I also pin the Station Services panel, since there are no brackets in the station to deal with, this one IS snapped/butted to the right side of the screen, usually the full height top-to-bottom.
Market, Fitting, Jukebox, S&I, Contracts, Mail, etc windows don't get pinned.
For a UI, I prefer familiarity and functionality over shiny effects. Example: I stopped using Ubuntu because of the Unity interface replacing classic GNOME, and switched to Xubuntu (using XFCE which is more like classic GNOME).
Screenshots from Sisi, I've noted window statuses and marked the "gutter" area that I keep window-free in space so the brackets for off-screen objects can be seen:

As above. I like the locked windows. I'd appreciate (if you scrap locking all together) the limited drag space. But then clumsy me would still manage to drag and resize windows. And would they then still be more see-through than other windows? Would much prefer pinning to mean "locked in place" though... |

I tend to collapse windows which are transiently up. The best example I can think of is for PI. I don't want to reopen the Science and Industry window after each planet so I collapse it, manage my PI, un-collapse it and select the next planet. I never collapse windows normally present in my UI (Local, Overview, Scanner) and I had no idea of TAB doing that.

Total rollup (the Tab key) - sometimes, when I want to quickly clear the screen to work with probes. "Minimize all" would be an acceptable alternative, if worked the same way as rollup - to restore previously-minimized windows. And when you're at it, do something to NOT redraw window contents while minimizin-restoring. No other WM does that. It only slow down the animation, cause unnecessary load and introduce text rendering artifacts.

The problem is not with dragging, but with snap group itself. It's not apparent to anyone if this is group or just separate windows laid that way. The difference could be as small as just one pixel. Compare it to the similar functionality in GIMP... Can you clearly tell that this is a group?

The more vocal you are, the less likely we are to screw up like this again! You won't find this clarity of transparency anywhere in modern EVE. Then they decided that they need a new UI, totally windowed and such. And suddenly, they decided, that apparent pinning is a bad thing... and made it an option... DISABLED by default. |

It apparently only took a single patch to remove it. You've got a week to go. Revert the code if it's that big a hassle. And do not try to tell us that you can't make changes right up until the last minute - I have personal experience that says otherwise with the Incursion expansion, where things were literally changed at the last minute.
CCP Optimal wrote:In the case of locking windows when pinned, I take it that the biggest reason for the usage relates to lightning fast mouse maneuvering and button pressing going wrong and the usual suspects being the overview, selected item and drone windows, and probably any other combat related window.
Generally, I don't want my UI moving around "by accident". Your UI code already does a ****** job of keeping things in the same place just when docking and undocking, frequently reordering my windows at any opportunity. If I pin a window, I want it to stay EXACTLY where I told it to, period. That the pinning feature makes windows transparent is a bonus for me - it just means I can see **** behind them.
Here is a picture of my UI a few months ago (I don't have any more recent ones available from my usual machine at the moment). That setup is pretty much identical to how I have my UI set up for FiS, except there are a total of 4 chat stacks, arranged in a 2x2 grid along the bottom. The right-hand pair of them are minimized when I undock so I have access to the HUD buttons.
If I need to have it up and open a lot when I'm undocked, it is given a location on my screen and pinned, without exception. If it is something I might need to check occasionally (mail, market, P&P, fitting) it is not pinned.
Quote:For pinning (just the transparency change bit) we might be able to remove that option altogether, make the active window background fade in (look like an unpinned window) and all other windows fade out (look like pinned windows). Ew. No. EVE's UI is ******** levels of inconsistent already. This would make it worse.
Collapsing windows: I used to use it more, but I haven't had a need for it lately. I would rather it be kept because it's pretty clear that a lot of people do use it.
Quote:What about features like SHIFT-dragging windows to drag an entire snap-group of windows ... is this the first time you ever heard of this or is it a keeper?
Er... what exactly do you mean by that? Shift-dragging moves, say, for that picture I posted, those two adjacent chat stacks, or the entire column of windows on the right, even if I only click on one while doing it? If that's the case, then that's the first time I've heard of it, and it's a keeper. I don't know how often I'd use it, but that's something I can see myself using.
Quote:Would most people agree that reducing the draggable area for a window to the window header would eliminate the need for locking?
No. I would not. That treats a symptom, not the cause. Locking eliminates random window movement. Period. Under ALL CIRCUMSTANCES. That treats the cause.
Return pin/locking as it exists now. There is no reason to remove it at all, and the fact that you believed nobody used it shows that there are still a number of people within the company that are ridiculously out of touch with the playerbase. |

Collapsing is a WONDERFUL way to keep 50 million windows open, check them periodically, and keep them out of the way the rest of the time. Chat is a majority of this but not all.

Good options like this should be enabled by default. Move Last Speaker to Top, Show Session Change Timer, and Show Window Identification are also good candidates for default enabling.
CCP Optimal wrote:I would be surprised if many people lock their fitting window (or do they?).
Considering you actually can't pin the fitting window... =P That's one of the main problems with the interface in general, too much inconsistency in functionality and styling. This is especially true for newer stuff, like PI windows.
CCP Optimal wrote:What about features like SHIFT-dragging windows to drag an entire snap-group of windows ... is this the first time you ever heard of this or is it a keeper?
Occasionally use it, but you ideally rearrange the interface less and less as times goes on.

Get rid of all the focus-locking elements. Seriously. Anything that stops you from doing stuff just because it decided to pop up needs to die in a fire. These are typically notification popups like the kind used for downtime warnings, but also include some windows used in the petition system and in the new bug reporter. |

I think sadly this is an area that you're quickly going to find out there is no answer to. As someone who has worked with UI design before, I can assure you that almost any change you do is going to send someone, somewhere into a rage.
I remember taking over a program that someone had written a few years back with a horrid UI (and horrid backend code). I started by rewriting the UI to make more logical sense; OK buttons in the place that you'd expect them with other standard windows, CTRL+P printing as opposed to CTRL+Shift+P, and having tab move between boxes as opposed to the arrows which could now be used to move to a different character in a text box (you had to use the mouse and manually click where you wanted it before).
The backlash was insane. I was called everything you can imagine for weeks on end, with several employees trying to get me sacked and general all around office hate.
Microsoft come across the same issue when moving to their new ribbon interface in '07. Adding more and more options to menus was crazy, and Microsoft this to their credit did an excellent job with the ribbon. It didn't stop people whining over it though as opposed to spending less than a day retraining for something that has infinitely better work-flow.
I think the window collapsing point shows this nicely. You consider it weird, I consider it normal I grew up with a rather unknown (outside the UK) OS called RISCOS, where this was the standard behaviour. It's also fairly standard in some Linux distros.
I use it *all* the time. My UI setup requires it in fact. I will have windows collapsed directly 'on top' of each other. These are normally things I wouldn't have open at the same time - so the D-scanner and people & places for example. I just double click the top of the current one, then the same for the window right next to it and I have the window I want ready to use.
The single biggest key I can offer to good UI design is allow the user to do things with as *little* mouse movement as possible with the *minimum* number of clicks. UI collapsing allows this currently.
If I wanted to do it without collapsing, I would have to do significantly longer mouse movements across the screen (the full span, as the windows are on the right), and a few more manual clicks to close and open windows manually. The other option is keyboard shortcuts, but like the ribbon in Word/Excel, the collapsing allows features to be quickly accessed without hunting through menus on the neocom as they are already open.

Reducing the draggable area is fine but what about resizing on the window borders? For me resizing a window by accident is just as bad as dragging, except it's more likely to happen. For example I know that because of the exact size of my overview, it displays a maximum of 30 objects before the scroll bar appears. So if I just have enemy ships on my overview and half a scroll bar I know that there's around 60 ships on there. Accidentally resizing the overview screws this up though, especially I don't notice it.
Okay it's not the biggest problem in the world but lock windows has always reassured me that no matter how crazy I get with the mouse, my overview will never change.

My need for locking and pinning is for the following and trust me I am not alone on this:
The UI as it stands right now is amazingly and annoyingly fickle. For Example:
If you put windows on the right side of the screen and align them to touch the screen edge and/or with other windows: Using the Map (any F10 Function) MAY randomly cause various windows to relocate and not return to their original poisition Docking / Undocking will sometimes cause the same effect. Sometimes this just happens for no reason that can be logically determined.
The use for locking and pinning is to reduce the amount of times that the UI in EVE decides to randomly rearrange itself. Without it it happens CONSTANTLY, with locking and pinning it happens occasionally.
Changing the drag area for windows would do nothing to eliminate the need for locking pinned windows, when it's pinned you shouldn't be able to drag it anyways. The lock feature is used because some "features" are deciding that the way we choose to setup our UI Layout needs to be readjusted for some reason.
TL;DR - Make our UI windows stop moving all over the damn place. |

Dear CCP Optimal, most of your assumptions are look completely wrong to me. Isn't there a way to automatically grab user settings from all clients so you can extract statistics about what players do and which features they use? If there isn't you really need it because it will be much better than doing wild guesses.
I use window stacking, pinning and collapsing all the time and don't really care that they don't belong to so called "21st century modern GUI systems" because quite often those new "innovative" GUIs are aimed to make people buy new version of their software and not to make work easier. Sad but true.
Window pinning is used not only to prevent accidental moves but also unwanted resizes. Thus making window movable by header only won't be a fair trade. As an alternative: what if to resize or move any window you would need to hold Shift (or other modifier key) down and all the other time window would stay locked?
Also window pinning helps a bit with eternal EVE problem of window jumping (non-user initiated movements or resizes). The root cause of this bug is a window snapping, isn't it? Then let's get rid of it because it gives more problems than help. Or limit snapping to edges of the screen and remove window to window snapping (hate it!).
Idea of turning windows to fixed UI elements is also bad imho. You should aim for exactly opposite and avoid fixed elements as much as possible (my wet dream would be autopilot and target list to get their own windows). But if you like to reduce amount of windows as much as possible what about Selected Item window? Now when we have keyboard shortcuts for quick actions and context and circle menus for less-often used actions is there much need for this window? Only use for it left is quick display of npc bounties but you could display this information somewhere else (like on bracket labels next to npc names) and then remove Selected Item window altogether.
Window collapsing is used mostly instead of window minimization because: 1) you can use both top and bottom edges of the screen while minimization restricted to bottom edge only; 2) minimization reorders windows in the order they were minimized so it takes time to find particular window while collapsing leaves window header where user left it; 3) collapsed window state seems to be saved between ship/dock sessions and login sessions while minimized window state often isn't.
Hope that feedback bit helps. |

You need more than one way to access the same functionality. And, prefereable, more than two. Context menu offers complete list of available actions in a less-than-optimal way, but it ought to stay. Circle actions are least efficient. Hotkeys are a quick way to access often used actions, but it's least visual as well as prone to misclicks considering that chat input box would be active at the same time. Selected item window provide quick visual feedback as well as visual access to available actions against your target. |

I would really like to see at least the HUD in-space windows changed to be something less window like. It really dosen't fit the century we're supposed to be in, being able to see our ship from the outside and all, but still using a window/mouse pointer interface.
I kinda like the hud overlay for system information in the top left corner that currently is on Tranquility. It has style, while the framed windows for chat, selected object and overview is overwhelmed with annoying framelines, title bars, buttons and whatnot that is so 1997 and as you mentioned yourself, Windows 3.11.
Oh, and the browser could really do with an overhaul. I never figured why you don't skin the scrollbars by default to something more EVE like.

Are there other weird little things in the window system that nobody uses that we could probably axe without much rage?
These sorts of questions are rather disturbing, since they tend to indicate that the folks on the CCP UI team play the game only occasionally, and perhaps only when testing code. This is not uncommon in most software development companies, but it is somewhat more of a problem at a game company, where the UI is critical to the gameplay.
After the Winter release, I would seriously suggest that you, and the rest of the UI team, take a few months to play (no design, no coding - just play) every aspect of the game, before making, or even suggesting, further changes to the UI. Relying solely on feedback from the players is a really, really bad idea - players tend to only suggest "bells & whistles", because they always assume, wrongly, that the developers are equally experienced at playing the game, and thus already know what features are essential to keep.
And, please, don't take this as a negative criticism - I make the same suggestion to my clients, when similar issues come up between the developers and the end users.
Also, for this particular problem, you are trying to over-think the solution. It is not necessary at this time to pull the windowing system "further into the 21st century", or make it "simpler, more elegant", or even "streamline" it.
You just need to fix the bug. |

Feature and code freezes, prior to a new software release, apply to new features only. It does not apply to fixing bugs in existing functionality.
And, if you break something, you are expected by the players to fix it before release. The release day timetable is simply not a valid excuse, esp. for this Crucible release, which is obviously intended to sooth the bitter players and not aggravate them further.
Roll back the release a week or two? Annoying, but ok. Release on time with known bugs that will **** off the players and generate more negative PR? Bad idea. |

I fine the UI impossible to use w/o this feature - at the moment on SISI- my windows and info bars swap locations and all that - it is VERY ANNOYING to have to keep doing this EVERY time I dock or undock...
IF this isn't and option then you need to find a way to lock the UI in some kind of way that works and simply trash the concept of a customizable UI... which would be a huge mistake, but having critical interface stuff hop around is unacceptable. |

Frankly absurd to remove this feature, even if it is difficult to maintain. Not being able to lock windows is extremely irritating, I can't tell you how many times I've accidentally moved stuff around that I didn't mean to on Sisi. |

My take on window management in eve:
The number one reason for the hostility towards removing pinning is the absolute blood-boiling frustration with the multitude of window docking/snapping/mis-clicking issues and bugs, some of which have probably been fixed/smoothed in the past. I can't count how many times I've nearly punched the screen when either the client lags and mis-interprets a click, or the (still unresolved afaik) bug happens where a mouse click decides to grab a random window, sometime causing a cascade of windows moving themselves around that somehow believe they should be pinned to each other's location.
My dream implementation would include removing all logic for windows to stick together and try and move as a group. This seems to be the root of almost all my frustration with the eve UI. I don't think it would be very well missed, as at least in my case the amount of extra work from moving commonly linked windows (like the overview and selected items) would be greatly overshadowed by the reduction in window moves I have to make to correct something the client does automatically via windows trying to stick each other.
With the amount of bug fixes listed for that feature, and the amount of patches that have introduced goofy issues with it, I would guess there's a TON of code involved with it, which IMO could be scrapped.
If the 'window sticking' feature was removed, it seems like it would be extremely easy to make the 'pin' option simply disable that window's ability to move, possibly even moving transparency to another feature all together (I'm not sure I'm totally on board with dynamic transparency, but I would be willing to see it in action first). |

If it's true that most of the issues involving the UI windows revolve around the "snapping" behavior (which I personally don't mind, it makes it a little easier to arrange things neatly and quickly, imo), then perhaps the appropriate solution is to simply remove the snapping behavior, and just allow us to pin things as we can now.
The ability to pin a window to make it at a given size in a given position, and transparent, is one of the few consistently (hurr) saving graces of the current EVE UI across every expansion I've lived through.
Honestly, my biggest pet peeve with the window interface as it stands is the opposite of some other people; where some would like to be able to close Corp/Alliance/Local/Militia/Incursion (CALMI) channels, I would personally like to be able to apply their un-closable behavior to other stacks of windows that they are not part of - as a toggle, of course - closing a bunch of channels entirely by accident is really annoying when you have to open them up again, let alone the horrendous freezing that happens while the client/UI catches up with the fact it closed a lot of windows all at the same time. I posted a bit more about it in the Little Things thread. |

CCP this is one of the most used and very useful feature HOW CAN YOU TAKE IT AWAY?
This is a very plain stupid act when you are trying to fix a game but instead you ARE BREAKING it.
Please put it back.
Or implement some other forms of lock. Such as "only move window when holding shift" or something similar.
"Toggle window style" <--this even sounds stupid. Why does it even exist when I can already modify the transpancy in my options? It is a PIN button and JUST MAKE IT PIN

I am not sure if enyone has mentioned this, cant read 11 pages of identical posts, but apart from "leave the lock feature untouched its essential", I'd like to note something else.
If you are looking for stuff to remove, the thing when you double click on a window title and it collapses upward to a single title bar, is very annoying to me. I would like to see that dead and buried, it only gets in the way of things when it happens accidentaly.
Seems right now, there are 2 ways to minimize a window, one is to a fixed position at lower left and the other is to a movable title bar. I see this as redundant. MAking the minimized window tag movable, so people can have it anywhere they want it and removing he other option to minimize to title bar alltogether would be my way to go.
Thanks. |

It's good to hear you're bringing the feature back. Though i would like to be able to also be able to lock windows without making them transparent. I don't want my chat and scanner windows transparent, which means i can't lock them making them prone to accidental movement.
Shift drag causing all the group of windows to move has been way more of a nuisance than a useful feature.
As for collapsing windows to only show the header, it's very useful in my opinion. I often use it for my scanner, market and IGB windows. My overview command window collapsing when i spam approach or target can be a massive nuisance at times though, and i would love to see it possible to turn this off for certain windows.
I would love it if you could separate the pin button into transparent and lock buttons and add a lock collapse button. |

If the test server is the code that's going to be released as the expansion I'd say you have a lot of time to fix it since you're going to need to fix the windows that are hopping all over the place on sisi before release.
This option is not that complicated to re-implement. As far as I'm concerned if you pin a window and it don't lock then the PIN FEATURE is BROKEN and you are releasing yet again another buggy and broken expansion.
You do realize you have over a month before "winter" right? If you fly me out there I'm sure I could fix this for you in this time if your programmers can't figure it out. :P |

CCP Optimal wrote:Obviously, we jumped the gun on this one, we're sorry and we'll fix it.
Call Blizzard. WoW Calls it "locking" but they seem to have no issue allowing chat windows to be locked in place... Ok smart A** jokes aside...
I like the stable transparency setting I don't want it to change as I mouse over it. I like the pin, I want ALL windows to be able to be LOCKED not just have to move a little ways before they unlock. It's not that inconceivable. And as far as minimizing... I minimize windows A TON in Eve. When I played WoW it was one of the most frustrating thing ever that their UI lacked this feature.
Hell I was trying to keep it simple, if you want to know what I'd REALLY like, how about the ability to open two versions of my cargo so I can filter them differently at the same time? Or better yet multiple market windows so I can look up all the components required to build a product at the same time compare prices and not have to go digging around for crap and waiting for the api call with EVERY SINGLE change. I could open 5 different items and simply swap between them.
Funny you mentioned it reminds you of windows 3.11 because rather than trying to eliminate good features you should try to upgrade it to like windows vista /puke or windows 7 and give us a windows task bar for easier access to minimized stuff. (/tongue in cheek).

YOu know this is a good point. That "snap to the next window" feature actually sucks most of the time. As I typically have to move window B out of the damn way to get WINDOW A in place then pin WINDOW A to lock it and try to slip window B back where I want it.
Put pinning back in, deal with that headache and dump the auto align, auto snap window bs that we are dealing with and as has been said, is likely creating most of the darn movement issues when docking/undocking, etc. |

Yes - EVE not Windows 3.11 / 98 /2k / se7en or any one - in win you work in one or two applications at the same time. in EVE you work at more, than two applications at the same time: local chat / language chat / overview / dronewindows / igb / market / contract`s / cargo / assets- so they need me all at the same time, and they need me lock, at least chat`s / local / over / drones / conts & cargo, also all windows need me with minimaze. |

Install any unix-like OS (like linux, freebsd, whatever), then install fluxbox, or any decent window managers, and you'll see all these features being around for decades. Yeah, these are not "modern" window managers (at least, in your context), but these have features so comfortables that I haven't seen on any other platforms. Windows and alike are for the dumb masses, thought Windows 7 has some nice ones, but still lags behind a lot. |

Personally, I can't wait till we get the UI seen in the Dominion Trailer
No pressure guys, that is a nice, clean but informative potential for a UI (in my opinion anyway), and your Marketing/trailer designers have set a high bar, for you to get something like that.
Anyway off the point, you asked if people minimise/collapse tabs.
I know myself and a couple of others that tend to collapse Local while in WH space, then double click to bring it back up when in 0.0/low-sec etc...... Collapsing it when in WH's space means less reliance on it and gives back some screen real estate.
Overviews, selection boxes, local and the directional scanner would be very useful to be able to lock etc, colapse when needed.
I also use shift double click to collapse connected boxes when "Heads down" in Scanning view, but am able to keep my overview up for any unexpected visitors on grid.
Mainly it's for managing screen real estate when doing scanning or PI etc.
Basically, I can work with the removed functions, it's a small inconvenience, but an inconvenience all the same, and more importantly the UI is forgive me for saying so pretty archaic! I'm aware this is known internally anyway so no need labour the point.
If this is a step towards getting something new and improved I can live with that.....
I am impressed however with how quick you guys have come back with the community feedback, please keep it up :) |

No. Just no. This is not the solution.
Snapping behavior is just a convenience. Actually locking windows in place is a requirement.
You don't need the windows to snap to the nearest thing. That can be dealt with with a little bit of patience when you have a few spare minutes. You need them to stay exactly where you put them so they aren't flying around from stray mouseclicks in combat.

Thanks for the response.
I use the pinning feature all the time, will go mad without it, and most appreciate your apparent commitment to return it.
Double-click to minimize/tab was actually suggested off-hand by me (to Friggi, iirc) back in '04. Ended up in the next build.
Some-time later window-shade was added (don't know where this one came from) and the double-click default got switched to this (I've always wanted an option to toggle double-click behavior, maybe you can add that while you're at it). I use this feature extensively, though I'd actually prefer it was the [-] widget and used double-click to minimize instead (more options!).
Collapsing (shading) windows actually has its history as an "Extension" in the old Mac OS System 7 days called "Windowshade". Apple eventually adopted it in the mainline OS (and there are mods to add it back to OS X). It's very useful for 'peeking' behind a window and (unlike tabbing/minimizing) maintains a sense-of-physical-place for the window (it doesn't require a mouse-movement to undo its effect after taking that peek).

In my opinion, pinning, collapsing and stacking is better than what you might consider "a modern GUI system". Really couldn't care what is deemed "modern" or not, but the three aforementioned ideas make window management so much easier.
Nowhere is it more easy to resize or move a window accidentally than when ship spinning or rotating the camera a little in space. Pinning should stay, it's so much easier. Oh and also, I've noticed that I can make my drone bay a certain width to fit between two things, but when I relog it resizes itself to be slightly wider. Pain in the backside tbh.
Collapsing (I assume that is the double clicking the header bar and it collapsing into that bar) is also useful, I use it for the ingame browser, because I can leave that at the top and barely notice it when it's collapsed and can easily access it. I much prefer this feature to minimising windows, which get in the way of when I'm typing in chats.
As for stacking windows... Are you seriously telling me this isn't a "modern GUI feature"? I seriously hope I have misinterpreted what "stacking" means, because if it is what I think it is, CCP have gone backwards. When you stack windows, you get tabs and can switch between these tabs. Every popular internet browser now has tabs. A few years ago if you wanted another page opening, you'd have to open it in a whole new window, tabs have become extremely popular and now you won't find a browser without this. What's more, ingame it helps save space, by storing multiple chats in one window.
I thought I heard somewhere that they're reverting pinned windows back to being pinned. Can anyone confirm this? Or was I simply having a very, very nice dream? |

CCP Optimal wrote:For pinning (just the transparency change bit) we might be able to remove that option altogether, make the active window background fade in (look like an unpinned window) and all other windows fade out (look like pinned windows). I have actually played around with this a bit and it reduces the visual noise of the UI quite a bit, drawing the attention of your eyes to the active window while keeping other windows well readable and the 3d scene visible, so it looks promising. I actually strongly dislike making windows transparent, with the exception of overview, selected item and drones. In particular transparent chat windows are very hard to read. My current monitor is too narrow to have two chat windows open in the bottom left without overlapping them, and if they're also transparent, the overlapping text is quite illegible. It's a pity this means I can't pin them because chat windows moving around is my #1 UI gripe (after overview/selected item/drones moving around, but that bug's been fixed).
Making transparency depend on focus is a stupendously dumb idea IMO. I really don't understand when people think "it's not focussed, so the user obviously isn't looking at it". As an example one of the things I hated most about Windows when I was forced to use it instead of RISC OS was that focussed windows are on top, always and without fail. It's not possible to have a non-focussed window in the foreground without ticking an "always on top" option that I don't actually want and usually isn't available, or enabling the obscure option called focus-follows-mouse which is prone to cockups and not taken account of by a lot of programs.
CCP Optimal wrote:Collapsing windows has always seemed like a weird little thing to me, and for some reason it always reminds me of Windows 3.11, which is less than great. Do people use this feature? I know that some people use TAB to collapse/expand all windows, but wouldn't it make more sense to minimize/maximize all windows instead, while allowing you to exclude some windows (such as the overview)? I use this a lot. People & places, market, and especially the IGB while doing missions/anomalies. Collapsing is quicker to reverse than minimising if you just want to get a window out of the way for a few moments. I don't usually collapse all windows, but I imagine that if pinning worked properly, there'd be less need to do it.
Also in regard to collapsing, if the window you're collapsing is snapped to a window at the bottom, either the window that's snapped to it moves up, or it ends up collapsed just above that window instead of where its title bar was. I never expect this but it happens a lot and annoys the hell out of me every time. Really, the only thing I use snapping for is to get my windows neatly positioned. I never use it to group windows to move them around together.
CCP Optimal wrote:What about features like SHIFT-dragging windows to drag an entire snap-group of windows ... is this the first time you ever heard of this or is it a keeper? As mentioned above this is one misfeature I would like to see die in a fire, or at least turned off. It also interacts badly with "stack windows only if shift pressed". Suppose you want to take a chat window and stack it with another one that it happens to be snapped to. You start by holding shift and dragging the window... but then the window you're trying to merge it with starts moving too! You have to drag it out without shift, THEN shift-drag to stack.
CCP Optimal wrote:Are there other weird little things in the window system that nobody uses that we could probably axe without much rage? Window systems 101: Modal windows are bad, mmkay? Every modal window is annoying and should be made not modal, unless you can think of a COMPELLING reason for it to be modal. Selecting installations in industry is a prime example, as is the petition system. If modal-ness were to disappear entirely there would be much rejoicing.
The fact that PI windows are always on the BOTTOM is stupid. They should be windows like any other, closing only when you tell them to, or when you leave planet mode. When I'm setting up new routes, more often than not I accidentally close the window because I accidentally clicked outside it rather than on the "create route" button.
The circular menu just gets in the way. I never use it. I only even see it by accident, when I'm trying to move the camera. I guess some people must use it, but please allow me to turn it off. Setting it to middle button is a poor compromise since I use that for PTT (on the rare occasions when I need to use Eve Voice). |

GOOD NEWS: The option to "lock windows when pinned" is back on Sisi current build (325367).
BAD NEWS: A fresh copy of my TQ install patched to Sisi build 325367 RESETS MY FRAKKIN WINDOWS TO DEFAULTS AGAIN.
WTF? I just fixed all my window and game settings two weeks ago. Please support: export of settings in editable format
